Fracture of uni-directional carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite is strongly dependent on the orientation of basal plane in graphite matrix when it is limited within matrix. The orientation of basal planes are vertically stacked to carbon fiber which results in the weakness for applied tensile or shear force in thermosetting resin derived-carbon matrix composite. Microtextural control of the matrix was tried through chemical interaction between metal carbides and furan resin derived-carbon matrix. SiC and TiO2 addition made the orientation disordered. However, porosity increased due to decomposition of SiC. Interfacial bonding could be controlled by TiO2 addition, but carbon fiber was considerably reacted with TiC during thermal treatment higher than 2$600^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is desirable to control the thermal treatment temperature at which decomposition of SiC was not serious and TiC/C was not formed eutectoid.
Modification of C/C composite bipolar plate for improving electrical conductivity was carried out by addition of electroconductive carbon black (EC-CB). Carbon black was carefully mixed to methanol-containing phenolic resin, impregnated into 2D-carbon fabrics, hot pressed and then carbonized to obtain composite plate. Inclusion of electro-conductive carbon black enhanced the electrical conductivity of the C/C composites by increasing the conduction path. Addition of 10 vol% carbon black increased the electrical conductivity from 5.5/${\Omega}cm$ to 32/${\Omega}cm$ and reduced the crack formation by filling effect, resulting in the increase of flexural properties of composite plate. However, at carbon black content over 10 vol%, flexural properties decreased by delaminating role of excess carbon black at the interface in C/C composites.
To fabricate the ceramic/metal(SiC/ Al alloy) composite, SiC preform was prepared by Pressureless Powder Packing Forming Method and 6061 Al alloy was infiltrated into the preform. Uniform compact having an average pore size of 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and narrow pore size distribution was prepared. Phenolic resin solution(40 wt%) was penetrated into the SiC compact, and then the compact was preheated at the temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$. The pore size distribution and the microstructure of the preform were not changed by preheating. An uniform microstructure without any crack in the preform was obtained in SiC-Al alloy composite. The infiltration of 6061. Al alloy into the preform began at the temperature of 130$0^{\circ}C$ and the amount of infiltration increased in proportion to the infiltration temperature and the soaking time. The increasement rate of the infiltration amount decreased after 3 h. As a result of the infiltration at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h, Al alloy was well distributed in the interparticle channels and the relative density of the composite was above 98%. The strength and the fracture toughness of the composite were 303 MPa and 21.65 MPam1/2, respectively.

The development of the first wall whose major function is to withstand high neutron and heat fluxes is a critical path to fusion power. The materials database and the fabrication technology are being developed for design, construction and safety operation of the fusion reactor. The first wall was designed to consist of the plasma facing armor, the heat sink layer and the supporting plates. and Porous materials are of significant interest due to their wide applications in catalysis, separation, lightweight structural materials. In this study, the characteristics of the sintering process of SiC ceramic, $SiC_f$/SiC composite and porous $C_f$/SiC composite have been introduced order to study of the fusion blanket materials and heat-exchange pannel.
In this study, chopped Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber Reinforced Porous Reaction Bonded SiC (RBSC) composites and it fabrication process were developed by using Si melt infiltration process. The porosity and average pore size in fabricated chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composites were in the range of $30{\sim}40%$ and $40-90{\mu}m$, which mainly determined by the SiC powder size used as starting material and amount of residual Si in porous composites. The maximum flexural strength of chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composite was as high as 80 MPa. The delayed fracture behavior was observed in chopped SiC fiber reinforced porous RBSC composites upon 3-point bending strength test.

The mechanical properties of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites reinforced with continuous SiC fiber have been investigated in conjunction with the detailed analysis of their microstructures. Especially, the effect of test temperature on the characterization of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites was examined. In this composite system, a braiding Hi-Nicalon SiC fibric was selected as a reinforcement. $SiC_f/SiC$ composites have been fabricated by the reaction sintering process, using the complex matrix slurry with a constant composition ratio of SiC and C particles. The characterization of $RS-SiC_f/SiC$ composites was investigated by means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, the high temperature applicability of $RS-SiC_f/SiC$ composites was discussed.
Carbon fabric-reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) have attracted a considerable attention for high temperature structural application because of their outstanding oxidation resistance property and thermal shock resistance. In this study, we reported on the preparation of C/SiC composites by the polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) method. For this, polycarbosilane solution was impregnated into the carbon fabric and then cured by electron beam irradiation under argon atmosphere. Afterwards, the cured composite was pyrolyzed at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under argon atmosphere to produce the C/SiC composite. The porosity and density of the C/SiC composite were 13.5% and $2.44\;g/cm^3$, respectively, when the impregnation of the carbon fabric with the 30 wt% polycarbosilane solution conducted four times. In addition, in the isothermal experiment at $1500\;^{\circ}C$ in air for 5 h, the 95.9 wt% of the C/SiC composite was remained, indicating that the prepared C/SiC composite has a outstanding oxidation resistance.

Ni-P-SiC composite coating layers were prepared by electroless plating method and their deposition rate, codeposition of SiC, morphology, surface roughness, hardness, wear and friction properties were investigated. The deposition rate was kept almost constant independent of the concentration of SiC in the plating solution and the codeposition of SiC in the composite coating layer increased with increased concentration of SiC in the plating solution except the early stage. Vickers microhardness increased with respect to the increased codeposition of SiC and the heat treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hour. It was found that the wear volume decreased with increased up to 50 wt.% of SiC codeposition, and that friction coefficient increased gradually with increased codeposition of SiC. Considering the wear and the friction behaviors, the composite coating layer obtained by using 50 wt.% of SiC codeposition is desirable for the practical application for anti-wear and anti-friction coatings.
The (B.Si)C composite was prepared form the mixture of metal boron, silicon, and carbon powders in Ar atmosphere by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis Chemical Furnace. The characterization of synthesized power and sintered body were investigated. The microstructure of sintered body suggested that SiC boundary was made between B4C grains. The most excellent mechanical properties, the relative density of 95% oftheoretical value, 3 point flexural strength of 360MPa, and fracture toughness of 3.6MN/m3/2 could be obtained in 80wt% B4C-20 wt% SiC composite were obtained.
Aluminum based metal matrix composite reinforced with SiC particles was fabricated by the powder-in sheath rolling method. A stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 12 mm and wall thickness of 1mm was used as a sheath. Mixture of aluminum powder and SiC particles of which volume content was varied from 5 to 20vol.% was filled in the tube by tap filling and then rolled to 75% reduction at ambient temperature. The rolled specimen was sintered at 56$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5hr. The tensile strength of the (SiC)$_{p}$/Al composite increased with the volume content of SiC particles, and at 20vol.% it reached a maximum of 100㎫ which is 1.6 times higher than unreinforced material. The elongation decreased with the volume content of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ particles. The mechanical properties of the (SiC)$_{p}$/Al composite fabricated by the powder-in sheath rolling is compared with that of (Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$)$_{p}$/Al composite by the same process.ess.
