  • In this study, the objective of this study was to evaluate the adhesive characteristics of existing self-adhesive rubber asphalt sheet, butyl sheet and acrylate sheet in a low temperature environment through Tack Rolling Ball Test to obtain basic data on acrylate. As a result of this experiment, in the case of the self-molding rubber asphalt sheet and the butyl rubber sheet, the compound of the sheet was frozen in the low temperature environment and the iron bead was separated. On the other hand, the acrylate sheet did not freeze the acrylate even at 0 ℃, It is confirmed that the measured value is shown by Ball Test.

  • In this study, we synthesized a series of dendritic polystyrene-b-linear poly (t-butyl acrylate) copolymers with well-defined molecular architectures. The hydroxyl group located at the focal point of the second generation dendron bearing polystyrene ($M_n$ = 1000 g/mol) peripheries was converted into amine group via the following stepwise reactions: 1) tosylatoin, 2) azidation, and 3) reduction. On the other hand, the linear poly (t-butyl acrylate)s were prepared by an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of t-butyl acrylate where benzyl 2-bromopropanoate and Cu(I)Br/PMDETA were used as initiator and catalyst, respectively. To convert the end group of prepared poly (t-butyl acrylate) s into carboxylic acid, a debenzylation was performed using Pd/C catalyst under $H_2$ atmosphere. In the final step, dendritic-linear block copolymers were obtained through a simple amide coupling reaction mediated by 4-(dimethylamino) pyridine(DMAP) and N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide(DIPC). The resulting diblock copolymers were shown to have well-defined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions as supported by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography(GPC).

  • In order to improve the low impact resistance of polystyrene without harming its transparency the styrene monomer was copolymerized with transparent butyl acrylate (BA), and methylmethacrylate (MMA) to obtained a poly(styrene-co-butylacrylate) P(SM-co-BA) and a terpolymer copolymer P(SM-co-BA-co-MMA). The polymers were then cross-linked with the aid of a cross-linking agent dicumylperoxide (DCP), and their mechanical and optical properties were tested. It was found that the contents of monomers and DCP affect the mechanical, thermal, and optical properties of the polymers. An increase in BA contents in P(SM-co-BA) and P(SM-BA-MMA) improved the mechanical strength, but the optical properties remained the same with some exception for P(SM-co-BA). An increase in the DCP contents improved the mechanical but found losses in the optical properties.

  • The effects of the monomer ratios on the typical properties of polymer modified mortars that contain styrene and butyl acrylate latexes was investigated. Basic data was also obtained that is necessary for the development of appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. Polymer modified mortars that contain styrene and butyl acrylate latexes polymerized with various monomer ratios were prepared for different polymer-cement ratios. They were then tested to obtain the particle size of the polymer latexes, air contents, water-cement ratios, flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption, and chloride-ion penetration. From the test results, the polymer modified mortars that have styrene and butyl acrylate latexes (with the mix proportions of synthesis having monomer ratios of between 40:60 to 60:40 for the appropriate mix proportions) could be recommended for practical applications. The basic properties of the polymer modified mortars were more affected by the polymer-cement ratio than by the monomer ratio, and were improved over unmodified mortar.

  • The Purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. This paper deals with the effect of the monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars with methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes. The polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, IS and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as water absorption, compressive and flexural strengths, chloride-ion penetration depth are tested. The test results indicate that the monomer ratio is very important factors to characterize the strength properties of polymer-modified mortars, but the water absorption and chloride-ion penetration depth are influenced by polymer-cement ratio rather than monomer ratios.

  • At present, the polymer-modified mortars are used as high-performance as well as multi-functional materials in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to synthesize polymer to modify in cement mortars and make test samples to understand pore size distribution. This paper deals with the effect of monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars using Methylmethacrylate-Butyl Acrylate(MMA/BA) latexes synthesized through emulsion polymerization. From the results, we knew that the pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using Methylmethacrylate-Butyl Acrylate latexes at bound MMA contents of 70 and 60 percent is 7.5-75cm$^3$/g and the fine pore volume is increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio. The total pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is linearly reduced with an increase in the bound MMA content and increased in the polymer-cement ratio.

  • The space charge formation in polyethylene (PE)/ethylene n-butyl acrylate (EnBA) blends were investigated. Heterocharge was found in PE and EnBA containing 5 mole% of nBA while homocharge was found in EnBAs containing 19 and 20% of nBA. All PE/EnBA blends except the one with the EnBA containing 5% nBA showed heterocharge formation. Heterocharge was also found in crosslinked PE/EnBA blends, which was attributed to the volatile residuals generated by the thermal decomposition of peroxide.

  • Monodisperse composite latex particles with size of ca. 300 nm, which consist ofn-butyl acrylate as a soft phase and methyl methacrylate as a hard phase with different morphology, were synthesized by seeded multi-stage emulsion polymerization. Three types of composite latex particles including random-, core/shell-, and gradient-type particles were obtained by using different monomer feeding methods during semi-batch emulsion polymerization. Effect of poly(butyl acrylate)-poly(methyl methacrylate) rubber particle morphology on the mechanical and rheological properties of rubber toughened poly(methyl methacrylate) was investigated. Among three different rubber particles, the gradient-type rubber particle showed better toughening effect than others. No significant variation of rheological property of poly(methyl methacrylate)/rubber blends was observed for the different rubber particle morphology.

  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersion (WPUD) was prepared from polycarbonate diol (PCD), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as starting materials. Then, waterborne acrylic polyurethane dispersion (AUD) was synthesized by reacting the WPUD with different types of acrylate monomers, such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). Subsequently, the AUD was mixed with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) to yield a conductive coating solution, and the mixture was coated on the polycarbonate substrate. The pencil hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the coating films from AUD were improved than those from WPUD, while the electrical conductivity of the coating films from AUD was decreased than that of WPUD. Also, the effect of acrylate types on the properties of coating films was investigated. The AUD obtained from HEMA showed the strongest pencil hardness, while the AUD obtained from MMA exhibited the strongest abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and electrical conductivity among several types of acrylate monomers.
