  • A hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) is a limited and critical resource whose efficient utilization of capacity impacts on both the welfare of patients and the hospital's cost effectiveness. Decisions made in the ICU affect the operations of other departments. Yet, decision making in an ICU tends to be mainly subjective and lacking in clear criteria upon which to base any given decision. The study reviews the capacity utilization of one particular ICU, that of a public hospital in Hong Kong, and develops a computer simulation model to improve both the unit's capacity utilization and the quality of care provided to its patients.

  • The small group activities (SGA) was introduced into some of enterprises in Korea in 1967 and plant division, Saemaul undong Headquarters had encouraged Quality Control Circles (QCC) within the manufacturing corporations in assistance of central government. Registered small groups as of august 31, 1984 amounted up to 78,243 units and the number of members were 791,512. Meanwhile, small and medium industries have mostly introduced small group activities considerably later and less actively managed than large business. Main reasons for the less effectiveness of the activities are due to lack of management skills and less awareness of it from management and workers group. Effective small group activities are presumed to be successful only with labor management cooperation on the basis of human-oriented management philosophy. The small group activities are also prevalent in service sector. More derivative methods have been developed and more members are willingly participating in training programs. The small group which is basically a horizontal organization unit, promotes communication within the whole organization. In consideration of the social circumstances and traditions, the flexible model of the small group activities suitable to the corporate environment, will contribute to industrial development.

  • The first step to design a cellular manufacturing system is to make part-families and machine-cells. This process is called the machine-part grouping. This paper considers a machine-cell size when grouping machine-cells. By considering a machine-cell size, an unrealistically big size of machine-cell which may be caused by the chaining effect can be avoid. A heuristic algorithm which minimizes the number of inter-cell movement of parts considering a machine-cell size is presented. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed heuristic algorithm are compared with those of several heuristic algorithms previously reported. The comparison shows that the proposed heuristic algorithm is efficient and reliable in minimizing the number of inter-cell movement of parts and also prevents the chaining effect.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the strength of three families of cutting planes for a lot-sizing problem. Lot-sizing problem is very basic MIP model for production planning and many strong valid inequalities have been developed for a variety of relaxations in the literature. To use three families of cutting planes in Branch-and-Cut framework, we develop separation algorithms for each cut and implement them in CPLEX. Then, we perform computational study to compare the effectiveness of three cuts for randomly generated instances of the lot-sizing problem.

  • This study is about pressure-accepting behavior of consumers attached to brands. Previous studies of the situation focused on time pressure and scarcity pressure, focusing on scarcity. The results of the study are as follows. First, consumers attached to brands were found to be relatively blunt in time pressures. This indicates that brands of consumers are attached to do not buy on impulse because of time pressure. Second, consumers attached to brands were found to be relatively under social pressure. This indicates that consumers who are attached to the brand do not buy with social pressures such as quasi-family groups. Third, consumers attached to brands were found to be relatively sensitive to scarcity pressures. Thus, a quantity-limited marketing strategy is generally more effective for consumers with high marketing effectiveness but high brand attachment. Fourth, unlike the one presented, consumers attached to the brand were found to be relatively insensitive to place pressure.

  • The importance of EDI has been so emphasized that we need exchange/maintain electronic documents effectively, and convert then to other formats. The traditional EDI, however, is facing on the limitation of growth because of it's high expense, and the closenees of sharing information. The EDls of next generation, like open EDI, object-oriented EDI, and Internet EDI, have appeared to solve these problems. Finally, XML/EDl, which is very effective to solve these kinds of problems, is now replacing the traditional EDI and the HTML in Internet and is influencing on e-Business. So, we are going to suggest a solution which uses XML/EDl as a substitute for the traditional one. First, we analyzed the problems of the traditional EDI system and organized the structure of XML/EDl system. Next, we have developed the prototype of Internet bookstore to show the effectiveness and strength of XML/EDl over the traditional EDI.

  • The objectives of this study are to suggest and empirically prove the relationship model for investigating influence factors on the use of EDP audit techniques, and to identify moderating effects of the task types of EDP audit on the relationships between the influence factors and the use of EDP audit techniques. The results of the empirical test suggested that there are significant (positive or negative) correlations between the use of some EDP audit techniques and the influence factors, such as audit education, auditor's familiarity and age, and effectiveness of the technique, etc. The significant differences in the use of EDP audit techniques were empirically proved in the ratio of audit fees and the audit structure. It was also proved that the relationships between the use of techniques and the influence factors are different according to the task types of EDP audit. This study proposed the technique and the auditor related implications of these findings for the successful fulfilment of EDP audit.

  • Nowadays, sharing data among organizations is often required during the business collaboration. Data mining technology has enabled efficient extraction of knowledge from large databases. This, however, increases risks of disclosing the sensitive knowledge when the database is released to other parties. To address this privacy issue, one may sanitize the original database so that the sensitive knowledge is hidden. The challenge is to minimize the side effect on the quality of the sanitized database so that non-sensitive knowledge can still be mined. In this paper, we study such a problem in the context of hiding sensitive frequent itemsets by judiciously modifying the transactions in the database. Unlike previous work, we consider the quality of the sanitized database especially on preserving the non-sensitive frequent itemsets. To preserve the non-sensitive frequent itemsets, we propose a border-based approach to efficiently evaluate the impact of any modification to the database during the hiding process. The quality of database can be well maintained by greedily selecting the modifications with minimal side effect. Experiments results are also reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • We present an early result of a research for formalization of the characteristics and effectiveness of manufacturing performance measurement systems (PMS). Recently manufacturing PMS has been a focus of broad research efforts due to its practical role playing in managers' decision making process. There have been so many suggestive researches that explain the troubles with old cost accounting-based PMS and describe the desirable properties of PMS in strategic management of manufacturing operations. The lack of empirical investigation in this area, however, has left us unsure about what are the real characteristics that distinguish one PMS from another. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework that can be used to describe the environment, in which a specific PMS works, the characteristic and the utilization variables of a PMS. Then we report the result of a field survey, where we found three distinctive characteristics of a PMS, contents, vertical integration, and horizontal integration. Further, we discuss the relationships of the variables with the utilization of PMS, manufacturing strategy, manufacturing improvement programs, and business performance.

  • The small number of fusion research that addresses fear-appeal and self-efficacy in the effectiveness of warning labels cause the label is not clear, then the purpose of the study is the first to examine the effect of the combination of the message. With the experimental method, a total of 240 participants were smokers consist of Indonesian university students in the age range 18-23 years. Data obtained then processed with ANOVA statistical methods and Test T. The results are consistent with previous studies that the visual warning labels more effective than the textual warning labels alone. Results also suggest that a warning label should be both visual and textual messages combined with self-efficacy. Limitations, this study does not differentiate among smokers and non-smokers, in addition to the images are used only one type of disease, so that the research needs to be done to distinguish these factors.
