  • In order to elucidate the turbulent burning velocity of the two-component fuel mixtures, the lean and rich two-component fuel mixtures, where methane, propane and hydrogen were used as fuels, were prepared keeping the laminar burning velocity nearly the same value. Clear difference in the measured turbulent burning velocity at the same turbulence intensity can be seen among the two-component fuel mixtures with different addition rate of fuel, even under nearly the same laminar burning velocity. The burning velocities of lean mixtures change almost monotonously as changing addition rate, those of rich mixtures, however, do not show such a monotony. These phenomena can be explained qualitatively from the local burning velocities, estimated by considering the preferential diffusion effect for each fuel component. In addition, a prediction expression of turbulent burning velocity proposed for the one-component fuel mixtures can be applied to the two-component fuel mixtures by using the estimated local burning velocity of each fuel mixture.

  • Laminar burning velocities have been predicted by constant volume combustion chamber, counter flow burner and others. In this study, the measured flame propagation velocities in an assembled annular stepwise diverging tube were plotted with respect to equivalence ratio, length scale, and velocity scale. Three dimensional approach to understand the flame propagation velocity including laminar burning velocity is investigated, and the surface provides the correlation among quenching distance, propagation velocity, and equivalence ratio.

  • Burning velocities of conventional methane flame and oxygen-enriched methane flame were determined by experimentally and numerically at atmospheric pressure in order to examine the validity of various detailed reaction mechanisms in oxygen-enriched flame. The schlieren system was adopted to obtain the burning velocity of flame stabilized on a circular nozzle. Premix code was employed to compute the burning velocity. Three reaction mechnisms were tested at several oxygen enrichment level, whose names are GRI 3.0, MB(Miller and Bowman) and LKY(Lee Ki Yong) reaction mechanism. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to discriminate dominantly affecting reaction on burning velociy. The results showed that conventional reaction mechanisms originally based on methane-air flame were underpredict the burning velocity at high oxygen-enrichment level. The modified GRI 3.0 reaction mechanism based on our experimental results was suggested and shows a good agreement in estimating the burning velocity and the NO number density of oxygen-enriched flame.

  • In this study, for the use of LFG, the burning velocities of LFG and LFG mixed fuels have been numerically analyzed. C3 reaction mechanism which consists of 92 species and 621 reaction was adopted in the calculation. The results show that the burning velocities of LFG and LFG mixed fuels are obtained as a function of $CH_4$ and LFG percentage at stoichiometric conditions. In addition, the correlations of burning velocities LFG and LFG mixed fuels were obtained over a wide range of the equivalence ratio. The comparison of burning velocity correlated from numerically calculated results with experimental ones shows good agreements. From these results, the suggested burning velocity correlations far LFG and LFG mixed fuels in this study can be applied to the practical utilization of LFG.

  • Burning velocity of methane-air mixtures with water vapor have been measured to study the process of flame propagation using schlieren photographs and computation. The computations were carried out for the burning velocity using premix code of Chemkin program to compare the experimental results. The quantity of water vapor contained were changed 5% and 10% of total mixtures, and equivalence ratio of mixtures between 0.8 and 1.2 were tested under the ambient temperature 323K and 373K. The results showed little difference between these two methods, the burning velocity was decreased by increasing the water vapor contents due to the interruption of flame development. And, the effect of ambient temperature was less significant by increasing the water contents on the burning velocity.

  • This article describes a comparison on laminar burning velocity measured by Bunsen and spherical flame methods of synthetic natural gas (SNG) with various composition of hydrogen. In this study, the laminar burning velocity measurements were employed by Bunsen burner and cylindrical constant combustor at which flame images were captured by Schlieren system. These results were also compared with numerical based on CHEMKIN package with GRI 3.0, USC-II and UC Sandiego mechanism. In case of spherical flames, the suitable flame radius range and theoretical models were verified using the well-known previous results in methane/air flames. As an experimental condition, hydrogen content of SNG was adjusted 0% to 11%. Equivalence ratios of Bunsen flames were adjusted from 0.8 to 1.6. On the other hand, those of spherical flames were adjusted from 0.6 to 1.4, relatively. From results of this study, the both laminar burning velocities measured in Bunsen and spherical flame methods were resulted in similar tendency. As the hydrogen content increased, the laminar burning velocity also increased collectively. Laminar burning velocity of measured SNG-air flames was best coincided with GRI 3.0 mechanism by comparison of reaction mechanisms.

  • In this study, the burning velocities of LFG and LFG mixed fuels have been numerically determined. C3 reaction mechanism involving 92 species and 621 reactions was adopted in the calculation. The computed burning velocities using C3 mechanism show good agreements with experimental data. Based on numerical results, the maximum burning velocities of LFG and LFG mixed fuels were correlated as a function of CH$_4$ and LFG component percentage at stoichiometric conditions. In addition, the correlations of burning velocities of LFG and LFG mixed fuels were obtained over a wide range of the equivalence ratio. The numerical results are well agreed with the burning velocity correlations. The burning velocity correlations for LFG and LFG mixed fuels suggested in this study can be applied to the practical utilization of LFG.

  • Characteristics of lifted flame for highly diluted propane with nitrogen in high temperature coflowing air have been experimentally investigated, and the stabilization mechanism of lifted flame in high temperature air coflow have been proposed. As the coflow temperature increases, the liftoff height of flame decreased due to the increase of stoichiometry laminar burning velocity. At same coflow temperature, the difference of liftoff height between the fuel mole fractions has been disappeared by scaling the liftoff velocity with stoichiometry laminar burning velocity. It has been found that lifted flame can be stabilized for even smaller fuel velocity than stoichiometry laminar burning velocity. This can be attributed to buoyancy effect and the liftoff velocity characteristics for coflow temperature support it.

  • The laminar burning velocity was measured using a spherical combustion bomb with central ignition. Mixtures with equivalence ratio between 0.6 and 1.2, were tested. The computation was carried out for the burning velocity using premix code of Chemkin program under the unburned gas pressure of 0.5bar-30bar and temperature of 300K-700K at ${\Phi}1.0$. The results showed little difference between these two methods. The burning velocity was decreased by increasing the pressure and increased by increasing the temperature. The burning velocity was predicted by using the following equations $$S_L(m/s) = S_{st}(T/300)^{1.85}(P)^{-0.45}$$ $$(0.5bar{\leq}P{\leq}30bar,\;300K{\leq}T{\leq}700K)$$).
