This study was conducted to find out the relationship among agronomic characteristics including midrib ratio in Burley tobacco(N.tabacum L.) Four cultrivars, Burley 21, KB108, KB111 and KB301, were grown at Suwon Experimental Station in 2001. Several agronomic characteristics of these cultivars were measured for the analysis of correlations among agronomic characteristics. Midrib ratio of KB301 was somewhat higher than those of the other cultivars, but there is no significant differences among cultivars at $5\%$ probability level. Among four stalk positions, midrib ratio of cutters was the highest. Midrib ratio was correlated positively with length of leaf at $1\%$ level and negatively with weight of lamina at $5\%$ level, respectively.
Burley leaf tobacco extracts has been heated at loot for 2 hours and changes in non-volatile fructosazines and volatile components were investigated. Major changes for the heat treatment with corn syrup of burley leaf tobacco extracts were as follows, increases in the contents of 2,5-deoxyfructosazine and 2,5-fructosazine that is produce for the heating reaction of sugar and ammonia, production of pyraEine compounds, such as 2,6-dimethyl pyrazine,2,4-dimethyl pyrazine, ethrnyl pyrazine, methylethyl pyraxine, trimethyl pyrazine, 2-ethenyl-5-methyl pyrazine, 2-acetyl parazine and 2-acetyl-3-methyl pyrazine, increases in the content of furfuryl alcohol derived from sugar degrad ation, production of 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone and 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one derived from thermal degradation of Amadori compounds.
This study was carried out to develop the method of alkaloids analysis and investigate the kinds and contents of alkaloids in flue-cured, burley and oriental tobacco leaves using developed analytical method. The developed analytical method of alkaloids was as followed : Tobacco sample was treated with acid(pH 2∼3) and extracted with chloroform to remove chemical components except alkaloids. Sample solution was treated with alkali(pH 12∼ 13) and was extracted with chloroform to obtain alkaloids from sample solution. After extraction of alkaloids from tobacco leaves, alkaloids were separated and identified by GC, GC/MS using SE-54 fused silica capillary column. Nicotine, nornicotine, myosmine, 9-nicotyline, anabasine, anatabine, 2, 3-bipyridyl, cotinine, formyl nornicotine, acetyl nornicotine and formal anatabine were isolated and identified from the extracts of tobacco leaves. The contents of alkaloids were burley > flue-cured > oriental tobacco leaves, but oriental tobacco leaves were higher nornicotine, cotinine, formyl nornicotine and acetyl nornicotine contents than those of flue-cured tobacco leaves. The burley tobacco harvested in Korea was higher nornicotine contents by 2-6 times in the portions of cutter, leaf and tips position than that of burley tobacco(B3F) harvested in V. S. A.
The tensile strength (Pm) . elongation percentage ($\varepsilon$) , elastic modulus (I) , and specific volume (Sv) were calculated from the data of tensile characteristics of By 104 .and Burley 21 tobacco leaves, which were measured over a relative humidity from 60 to 80% at $20\pm2^{\circ}C$.The important results obtained were as follows.(1) Tensile strength(Pm) The "Pm"of By 104 was greater than that of Burley at. The "Pm"in both varieties were increased toward the upper stalk position and according to the decrease of relative humidity. The "Pm" of parallel piece to tile vein in a leaf were greater than that of right angle piece to the vein. (2) Elongation percentage ($\varepsilon$). The "s" of By 104 was higher than that of Burley 21. The "s" in both varieties were increased toward the upper stalk position and according to the increase of relative humidity. The "s" of parallel Piece to the vein in a Burley leaf was greater than that of right angle piece to the vein. (3) Elastic modulus (E) The "E" of Burley 21 leaf was higher than that of By 104. The "E" in both varieties were increased toward the lower stalk position and according to decrease of relative humidity. The "E"of parallel piece to the vein in both varieties leaves were greater than that of right angle piece to tile vein. (4) Specific volume (Sv) The "Sv" of Burley 21 leaf was increased than that of By 104. The "Sv" in both varieties were increased toward the lower stalk position and according to the decrease of relative humidity.ot;Sv" in both varieties were increased toward the lower stalk position and according to the decrease of relative humidity.dity.
A computer vision system was built to automatically grade the leaf tobacco. A color image processing algorithm was developed to extract shape, color and texture features. An improved back propagation algorithm in an artificial neural network was applied to grade the Burley type dried leaf tobacco. The success rate of grading in three-grade classification(1, 3, 5) was higher than the rate of grading in six-grade classification(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, off), on the average success rate of both the twenty-five local pixel-set and the sixteen local pixel-set. And, the average grading success rate using both shape and color features was higher than the rate using shape, color and texture features. Thus, the texture feature obtained by the spatial gray level dependence method was found not to be important in grading leaf tobacco. Grading according to the shape, color and texture features obtained by machine vision system seemed to be inadequate for replacing manual grading of Burely type dried leaf tobacco.
This study was conducted to find out the effects of chlorine on the yield, chemical constituents and physical properties of Burley leaf tobacco. The results obtained are as follows. 1. There was no significant differences in growth and yield among chlorine application levels. 2. When chlorine being applied 4kg/10a or more, the cured leaf showed higher chlorine content and lower leaf quality remarkably. It was estimated that the critical application of chlorine was 3kg/10a. 3. Total nitrogen and alkaloid contents of cured leaf were increased by chlorine application, while the phosphorus, calcium and magnesium were not affected. 4. The reflectance color of red and yellow were decreased by cvhlorine application in cured leaf of field grown tobacco.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of different soil moisture contents on the growth and chemical constituents of burley tobacco and on the protein pattern in tobacco leaf. Height, stem diameter, and largest leaf length of tobacco droughted from 45 to 60 days after transplanting was not recovered by rewatered amount of water supply from 60 to 75 days after transplanting, but leaf width enlarged. Dry weight per unit leaf area and total nitrogen content showed high values in low soil moisture, but total alkaloid contents were not different according to soil moisture contents. Soil moisture content didn't effect on the protein pattern of middle and upper leaves, but lower leaves showed the mild color and fewer numbers of the protein bands than those of midd1e and upper leaves.
To investigate tile effects of growth characteristics on the yield, price per Kg, chemical contents and physical properties in Burley tobacco, ten varieties including Burley 21 were tested in this study. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1 Forty to fifty days after transplanting, CCR (Crop Growth Rate) was the highest. RCR (Relative Growth Rate) increased up to 40 days, but decreased 50 days when maturation began. High- yielding varieties showed high CCR and RCR till 60 days. 2. Total alkaloid content of cured leaf increased about three times than that of topping stage, but the increased rates were some what different among varieties. 3. Leaf area, stalk diameter, stalk height and days to flower showed positive correlations to yield, whereas leaf thickness and weight per unit leaf area showed negative. 4 Varieties which are high in cured leaf weight ratio and weight per unit leaf thickeners showed relatively poor quality. 5 Nitrogen content was high in leafy and larger stalk diameter variety. 6. There are positive correlation between weight per unit leaf thickness and filling power. The time of combustion was positively correlated to leaf thickness and weight Per unit leaf. 7. It can be concluded that many characteristics are related to the yield, but not quality. It is, there fore, easy to Predict tile yield, but difficult to forecast the qualiffy.
This study was carried out to develop calibration equation of total volatile bases of tobacco leaf using near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS). Burley, imported flue-cured and oriental leaf tobacco samples were collected in 2005 crop year. Calibration equation was developed by modified partial least square method. The standard error of calibration and $R^2$ between traditional analytical method and NIRS analytical method were $0.038\%$, 0.983 for burley and $0.027\%$, 0.986 for imported flue-cured and oriental leaf, respectively. The standard error of performance and $R^2$ between traditional analytical method and NIRS analytical method were $0.048\%$, 0.940 for burley and $0.024\%$, 0.986 for imported flue-cured and oriental leaf, respectively. From these results, the NIRS analytical method seems to be applicable in analyzing total volatile bases of tobacco.
Effect of several nitrogen fertilizer sources on the chlorine absorption by the burley tobacco plants was investigated under the field and pot condition. The nitrogen sources included compound fertilize.(containing 3.9% NH4-N and 6.1% NH2-N), (NH4)2SO4, NaNO3. (NH2)2CO and NH4NO3. The chlorine content of leaf during growing stage was high in (NH4)2SO4 plot , and the differences among nitrogen sources was remarkable at maximum growing stage. The chlorine content of cured leaf was high in (NH4)2SO4 plot. When the (NH4)2SO4 was applied, the total alkaloid content of cured leaf was increased and the color of cured leaf became undesirable with the increment of leaf chlorine. The yield, quality and value of cured leaf were high in NaNO3 plot , while low in (NH4)2SO4 plot.
