In this paper, we present the regression analysis and design optimization for improving the permeability of 3D woven materials based on numerical analysis data. First, the parametric analysis model is generated with variables that define the gap sizes between each directional wire of the woven material. Then, material properties such as bulk modulus, thermal conductivity coefficient, and permeability are calculated using numerical analysis, and these material data are used in the polynomial-based regression analysis. The Pareto optimal solution is obtained between bulk modulus and permeability by using multi-objective optimization and shows their trade-off relation. In addition, gradient-based design optimization is applied to maximize the fluid permeability for 3D woven materials, and the optimal designs are obtained according to the various minimum bulk modulus constraints. Finally, the optimal solutions from regression equations are verified to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method.

The elastic modulus of a 3D-printed Kelvin foam plate is investigated by measuring the acoustic wave velocity of 1 MHz ultrasound. An isotropic tetrakaidecahedron foam with 3 mm unit cell is designed and printed layer upon layer to fabricate a Kelvin foam plate of 14 mm thickness with a 3D CAD/printer using ABS plastic. The Kelvin foam plate is completely filled with paraffin wax for impedance matching, so that the acoustic wave may propagate through the porous foam plate. The acoustic wave velocity of the foam plate is measured using the time-of-flight (TOF) method and is used to calculate the elastic modulus of the Kelvin foam plate based on acousto-elasticity. Finite element method (FEM) and micromechanics is applied to the Kelvin foam plate to calculate the theoretical elastic modulus using a non-isotropic tetrakaidecahedron model. The predicted elastic modulus of the Kelvin foam plate from FEM and micromechanics model is similar, which is only 3-4% of the bulk material. The experimental value of the elastic modulus from the ultrasonic method is approximately twice as that of the numerical and theoretical methods because of the flexural deformation of the cell edges neglected in the ultrasonic method.
X-ray powder diffraction study was conducted on the bulk modulus and phase transition behavior of synthetic zeolite X under high temperature and high pressure. Water and HCO3- solution were used as a PTM. Sample was heated and pressurized up to 250 ℃ and 5.18 GPa. The change of unit cell volume and phase transition were observed by X-ray diffraction. The lattice constants and unit cell volume of zeolite X, gmelinite, natrolite, and smectite were calculated using the GSAS2 program to which Le Bail's whole powder pattern decomposition (WPPD) method was applied. The bulk modulus of each zeolite X and smectite were calculated using the EosFit program to which the Birch-Murnaghan equation was applied. The bulk modulus of zeolite X is 89(3) GPa in water run, and zeolite X is 92(3) GPa in HCO3- solution run. In both run, pressure induced hydration (PIH) occurred due to the inflow of PTM into the zeolite X framework at initial pressure. Zeolite X transited to gmelinite, natrolite, and smectite in water run. Zeolite X, however, transited to smectite in HCO3- solution run. Interzeolite transformation occurred in water run, and did not occur in HCO3- solution run, which is assumed that conflict between the environment to form zeolite and the pH of the HCO3- solution.
This research investigates the effect of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dimensions in terms of diameter on the mechanical properties (longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus) of the simulated nanocomposites by molecular dynamics (MDs) method. MDs utilized to create nanocomposite models consisting of five case studies of SWCNTs with different chiralities (5, 0), (10, 0), (15, 0), (20, 0) and (25, 0) as the reinforcement and using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as the common matrix. The results show that with increasing of SWCNTs diameter, the mechanical and physical properties increase. It is important that with the increasing of SWCNTs diameter, density, longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus, shear modulus, poisson's ratio, and bulk modulus of simulated nanocomposite from (5, 0) to (25, 0) approximately becomes 1.54, 3, 2, 1.43, 1.11 and 1.75 times more than (5, 0), respectively. Then to validate the results, the stiffness matrix is obtained by Materials studio software.

Recently, a new $Y_2O_3$ coating deposited using the EB-PVD method has been developed for erosion resistant applications in fluorocarbon plasma environments. In this study, surface crack formation in the $Y_2O_3$ coating has been analyzed in terms of residual stress and elastic modulus. The coating, deposited on silicon substrate at temperatures higher than $600^{\circ}C$, showed itself to be sound, without surface cracks. When the residual stress of the coating was measured using the Stoney formula, it was found to be considerably lower than the value calculated using the elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of bulk $Y_2O_3$. In addition, amorphous $SiO_2$ and crystalline $Al_2O_3$ coatings were similarly prepared and their residual stresses were compared to the calculated values. From nano-indentation measurement, the elastic modulus of the $Y_2O_3$ coating in the direction parallel to the coating surface was found to be lower than that in the normal direction. The lower modulus in the parallel direction was confirmed independently using the load-deflection curves of a micro-cantilever made of $Y_2O_3$ coating and from the average residual stress-temperature curve of the coated sample. The elastic modulus in these experiments was around 33 ~ 35 GPa, which is much lower than that of a sintered bulk sample. Thus, this low elastic modulus, which may come from the columnar feather-like structure of the coating, contributed to decreasing the average residual tensile stress. Finally, in terms of toughness and thermal cycling stability, the implications of the lowered elastic modulus are discussed.
Objectives: This study analyzed the physical-chemical behavior of 2 bulk fill resin composites (BFCs; Filtek Bulk Fill [FBF], and Tetric-N-Ceram Bulk Fill [TBF]) used in 2- and 4-mm increments and compared them with a conventional resin composite (Filtek Z250). Materials and Methods: Flexural strength and elastic modulus were evaluated by using a 3-point bending test. Knoop hardness was measured at depth areas 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 mm. The translucency parameter was measured using an optical spectrophotometer. Real-time polymerization kinetics was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results: Flexural strength was similar among the materials, while TBF showed lower elastic modulus (Z250: 6.6 ± 1.3, FBF: 6.4 ± 0.9, TBF: 4.3 ± 1.3). The hardness of Z250 was similar only between 0-1 mm and 1-2 mm. Both BFCs had similar hardness until 2-3 mm, and showed significant decreases at 3-4 mm (FBF: 33.45 ± 1.95 at 0-1 mm to 23.19 ± 4.32 at 3-4 mm, TBF: 23.17 ± 2.51 at 0-1 mm to 15.11 ± 1.94 at 3-4 mm). The BFCs showed higher translucency than Z250. The polymerization kinetics of all the materials were similar at 2-mm increments. At 4-mm, only TBF had a similar degree of conversion compared with 2 mm. Conclusions: The BFCs tested had similar performance compared to the conventional composite when used in up to 2-mm increments. When the increment was thicker, the BFCs were properly polymerized only up to 3 mm.
Ni-base amorphous alloys were manufactured using melt-spinning and Cu-mold die casting methods. Amorphous formability, the supercooled liquid region before crystallization and mechanical properties were examined. The reduced glass transition temperature and the supercooled liquid region of $Ni_{51} Nb_{20} Zr_9 Ti_9 Co_8 Cu_3$alloy were 0.621 and 46 K respectively. $Ni_{51} Nb_{20} Zr_9 Ti_9 Co_8 Cu_3$ alloy was produced in the rod shape 3mm diameter using the Cu-mold die casting. Hardness, compression strength, elongation and elastic modulus of the alloy were 850 DPN, 2.75 GPa, 1.8% and 150 GPa respectively. Moreover, compression strength of 2.75 GPa was the highest value in the amorphous bulk alloy produced up to now.
The surface molecular motion of monodisperse polystyrene (PS) films was examined using scanning vis-coelasticity microscopy (SVM) in conjunction with lateral force microscopy (LFM). The dynamic storage modulus, E', and loss tangent, $tan\delta$, at a PS film surface with number-average molecular weights, $M_n$, smaller than 30 k were found to be smaller and larger than those for the bulk sample, even at room temperature, meaning that the PS surface is in a glass-rubber transition or fully rubbery sate at this temperature when the $M_n$ is small. In order to quantitatively elucidate the dynamics of the molecular motion at the PS surface, SVM and LFM measurements were performed at various temperatures. The glass transition temperature, $T_g$, at the surface was found to be markedly lower than the bulk $T_g$, and this discrepancy between the surface and bulk became larger with decreasing $M_n$. Such an intensive activation of the thermal molecular motion at the PS surfaces can be explained in terms of an excess free volume in the vicinity of the film surface induced by the preferential segregation of the chain end groups.
This paper describes the mechanical characteristics of poly 3C-SiC thin films grown on Si wafers with thermal oxide. In this work, the poly 3C-SiC thin film was deposited by APCVD method using only Ar carrier gas and single precursor HMDS at $1100^{\circ}C$. The elastic modulus and hardness of poly 3C-SiC thin films were measured using nanoindentation. Also, the roughness of surface was investigated by AFM. The resulting values of elastic modulus E, hardness H and the roughness of the poly 3C-SiC film are 305 GPa, 26 GPa and 49.35 nm respectively. The mechanical properties of the grown poly 3C-SiC film are better than bulk Si wafers. Therefore, the poly 3C-SiC thin film is suitable for abrasion, high frequency and MEMS applications.
