This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effects of mulching materials and removing time of the transparent polyethylene (PE) film on the growth of garlic at Uiseong experimental field, Korea. The experimental mulching materials comprised of transparent polyethylene film (0.025 mm) and net polyethylene (NPE). Plant height and leaf number of garlic were highest at PE treatment when the PE removing date was March 18 and this treatment also promoted the no. of cloves. Length of leaf sheath and bolting rate were highest and bulb weight loss rate was lowest at PE + NPE treatment when the PE removing date was March 18. But clove number was the lowest in this treatment compared to conventional PE film treatment. Conventional mulching method accelerated secondary growth rate but bulb weight loss was vice versa. There were statistically no differences in bulb diameter among treatments but conventional treatment positively focused on bulb diameter. Whenever PE film remove can suppress weeds compared to no mulching treatment but the dry weight of weeds were increasing trends as the removal dates of PE film were delayed. Transparent PE or PE + NPE treatments can be recommended to grow best quality garlic when PE film removing date is March 18.

Many onion growers and researchers assert that differences in soil type, agricultural practices, weather, and duration of prolonged onion cultivation in a particular field could affect onion bulb quality. This study evaluates the bulb quality of onions grown in different regions and determines the correlations between bulb characteristics and postharvest loss during cold and ambient storage. Soil and onion bulbs were collected from fields in six onion growing regions in Korea, during the growing season of 2011-2012. The fresh weight, dry matter content, and carbon (C), sulfur and magnesium contents of the onion bulbs were significantly affected by the location in which they were grown. Bulbs grown in Muan had the greatest number of scales, thinnest scale thickness, and the highest total soluble solids (TSS) and total flavonoids (TF). Bulbs originating from Jecheon had the lowest pyruvic acid (PA), total phenolics and TF. Storage loss of bulbs from the different regions was similar in refrigerated storage, but differed in ambient temperature storage. Bulb fresh weight was positively correlated with scale thickness (r = 0.617) and cold storage loss (CSL; r = 0.398). Dry matter content was positively correlated with C (r = 0.958) and TF (r = 0.256) contents, while it was negatively correlated with CSL (r = -0.424). CSL was primarily affected by the fresh weight, as well as the dry matter, C, and PA contents of the bulbs, while ambient storage loss was primarily influenced by the amount of TSS.
Physicochemical properties of garlic bulb during storage with different cutting treatments were estimated. Garlic harvested in early June was used in this experiments. Various physicochemical factors of garlic bulb such as weight loss rate, rotten rate, sprouting rate, moisture content, reducing sugar content and total pyruvate content were investigated. Bulbs with roots, bulb without roots and bulb with stem length of l cm, 3 cm, 5 cm were stored at 2$\^{C}$ for eight months. The weight loss increased sharply after 8 months for all treatments. Weight loss occurred most severely in treated garlics with bulbs with 5 cm stem length and progressed steadily at low rates in bulbs with 1 cm stem length. Also, less decay and internal sprouting were observed in bulbs with 1 cm stem length. Cutting treatments of roots were not significant for internal sprouting. Incidence of other chemical properties of bulbs, contents of total sugar, reducing sugar and pyruvic acid were not significant statistically. Moisture contents of treated garlics was remarkably reduced in longer leaving stems. As a result, top-clipped leaving stems fur long, seemed to have a beneficial effect on physicochemical properties of garlic stored at 2$\^{C}$ for 8 months possibly due to reduced weight loss, rotten decaying and sprouting rates. Utilization of such results in the processing industry can be effective.

This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of changes in onion (cv. 'Turbo' and 'Changnyongdaego') bulb quality during storage at room and cold temperature. Increased weight loss was found in the onion bulb stored at both cold and room temperature conditions. 4% weight loss was found in bulbs stored at room temperature and 2% at cold storage as compared to fresh cultivated onion bulb; after three months. Initially, there was no significant difference in the firmness of bulbs between cultivars and storage conditions. Hunter a value of bulb stored at room temperature was higher than the value of bulb stored at cold temperature. 27% and 7.9% decay was found after three months in 'Changnyongdaego' and 'Turbo' cultivars stored under room temperature condition respectively. In contrast, only 2% decay was noticed in both cultivars stored at cold storage condition. Hunter L value of onion bulb gradually decreased in both room and cold temperature storage conditions. In conclusion, quality of onion bulb can be maintained until three months. For long term storage and quality maintenance, under room temperature conditions a resistance cultivar should be selected.
This study was carried out investigate the storability of onions on calcium spraying, after cutting foliage, 6 different treatemnt , the dilution spraying of calcium nitrate 9 3%, 6%) , calcium carbonate(3%, 6%), dust scattering and the controls were evaluated for rotting, sprouting, healthy bulb and total weight loss ratio during storage. Rotting ratio on the dilution spraying of 6% calcium carbonate was lower than that of the control after 4 months storage by 16.7%. Sprouting and total weight loss were decreased in the dilution spraying of 6% calcium carbonate.

Patients who went through maxillectomy can have severely impaired swallowing, mastication, and pronunciation functions because of palatal defects. Leakage occurs through the nasal cavity while eating, chewing becomes difficult due to the loss of teeth and alveolar ridges, and oral and nasal passages are not separated, leading to hyper-nasal sound, and significantly reducing the quality of life. To prosthetically reconstruct the defect, the weight of the obturator should be reduced as much as possible to minimize dropout because of gravity, and the bulb of the obturator should be properly extended into the defect to get additional retention and stability. In this case of a partially edentulous patient who underwent additional maxillary resection because of tumor recurrence, a metal framework was designed by applying the basic design principles of removable partial dentures. An obturator with improved retention, stability, and support was fabricated through functional impressions. The patient was satisfied with the improved facial expression, mastication, swallowing, and pronunciation, and showed stable occlusion and oral hygiene management during the follow-up period.
This study was conducted to determine the optimal working conditions when a recently developed blower-type onion stem cutter is utilized for cutting onion leaves at harvest time. The June 20 leaf cutting treatment group had the highest leaf dryness among the treatment groups (leaf dryness: 66.3%; leaf moisture content: 50.5%); the residual leaf length was 6.7 ± 3.5 cm. It is considered to have the best mechanical leaf cutting performance among the treatment groups because it is included in the optimal range of 4-10 cm. The average working speed of mechanical onion leaf cutting using the stem cutter was 0.17 m·s-1, which is approximately 3.4 times faster than the average working speed of 0.05 m·s-1 in the human leaf cutting treatment group. This is expected to save approximately 2.6 hours compared to human labor (based on one person) when working on a 10a area using this machine. In addition, the incidence of damaged bulbs in the machine leaf cutting treatment group was 1.3%, compared to 0.0% in the manual leaf cutting treatment group. This suggests that the mechanical leaf cutting treatment group had a higher average onion bulb decay rate during storage than the manual leaf cutting treatment group. When the storage characteristics of each treatment group were examined, the decay rate by bulb part (leaf connected or root connected) after 8 months of storage was higher in the treatment group with a residual leaf length of less than 5.0 cm after mechanical leaf cutting than in the treatment with a residual leaf length of more than 5.0 cm. This is thought to be due to the fact that treatments with a residual leaf length of less than 5.0 cm are more susceptible to infection by pathogens that cause decay during storage than treatments with a residual leaf length of 5.0 cm or more. Based on the results of this experiment, performance target of the experimental machine (residual leaf length after operation: 5 cm), and existing research on the optimal residual leaf length for onion harvesting, it is recommended to cut onion leaves so that the residual leaf length is 5-10 cm when using the stem cutter.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of climate conditions during cultivation and harvesting on the quality and storability of fresh bulb cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata). Plug seedlings of six cabbage cultivars were transplanted to Gangneung-Wonju University high elevation research station in Gangwon province (780 m above sea level, lat. $37.5^{\circ}N$.) and harvested with four different harvest times like August 3 ($1^{st}$), August 13 ($2^{nd}$), August 23 ($3^{rd}$), and September 10 ($4^{th}$), respectively from 50 days after transplanting. Weight loss, Hunter color factors, firmness, and soluble solids content (SSC) of the cabbage bulbs were investigated during storage at $3^{\circ}C$ (85% RH) and $25^{\circ}C$ (60% RH). Decreased bulb weight and poor quality cabbages were apparent at the late transplanting (July 14) and harvest (September 10) respectively. Quality index such as firmness and SSC at August 23 ($3^{rd}$) harvested cabbage was better than August 3 ($1^{st}$) and August 13 ($2^{nd}$) cabbages due to the good weather condition just before harvesting. The cv. 'Speed king' and 'Minix 40' showed good qualities among the cultivars, especially when the bulbs were harvested during sunny day conditions from one week before harvesting. Also SSC was influenced by weather condition before harvesting rather than transplanting date, while firmness was influenced by transplanting and harvest date. However, the differences among the cultivars were not significant. The potential of storage as maintaining the quality was different, depending on weather conditions at harvest time. Generally the storage periods of six cultivars were around 3~5 days and 9~10 days at room and low temperature, respectively. However, the August 3 ($1^{st}$) harvested cabbage lost their marketable quality very fast because of rainy and cloudy weather condition before harvesting and also storability of bulbs was 2 days and 4 days at room temperature and $3^{\circ}C$, respectively. Quality index was also not significant difference among cultivars.
Optimal culture conditions of Spirulina platensis NIES 39 have been established using different types of light sources. Several types of photobioreactors were designed and the increase of biomass, the amount of $CO_2$, fixation and the production of chlorophyll content were studied. The result revealed that the input conditions of a 10 min period per 4 h at the condition of 5% $CO_2$ and 0.1 vvm, were excellent in the growth. The growth showing the maximum biomass accumulation is limited to 1.411 g/L when using the fluorescent bulb and the low powered surface mount device (SMD) type LEDs which were equipped-inside in the photobioreactor. However, the biomass exceeded up to 1.758 g/L level when a high powered red LED (color temperature : 12000 K) photobioreactor system was used. The $CO_2$ fixation speed and rate were increased. Although the total production of chlorophyll content undergoes a proportional increase in the biomass, the net content per dry cell weight (DCW) showed the higher production with a blue LED (color temperature : 7500 K) light than that of any other wavelengths. The carbon dioxide loss was marked as 0.15% of the inlet gas (5% $CO_2/Air$, v/v) at the maximum biomass culture condition.
This study was conducted to investigate the optimal sub-zero temperature for storage of two garlic cultivars, the northern ecotype 'Jaerae' and the southern ecotype 'Daeseo'. These cultivars of garlic bulbs were stored at different temperature (room temperature, $0^{\circ}C$, and $-4^{\circ}C$) conditions after predrying. Southern ecotype garlic showed higher weight loss than northern ecotype garlic. Northern ecotype garlic at $-4^{\circ}C$ exhibited less than 5% of weight loss during 10 month storage. Sprouting rate was higher in southern than in northern ecotype at room temperature storage. The value of injury by disease and insect was similar between southern ecotype and northern ecotype for 5 month storage, and then northern ecotype showed higher value of injury by disease and insect than southern ecotype. Hunter 'b' value of northern ecotype garlic was the lowest at $-4^{\circ}C$ storage. Northern ecotype garlic showed no cold injury at freezing point temperature storage. However, southern ecotype garlic had $0{\sim}5.3%$ cold injury occurrence at $-4^{\circ}C$ storage. Respiration and ethylene production exhibited the highest at room temperature storage, those had the slight increase at $0^{\circ}C$ and $-4^{\circ}C$ storages. Northern ecotype showed higher enzymatic pyruvic acid and fructan contents than those of southern ecotype. Enzymatic pyruvic acid content increased and fructan contents decreased during storage time.
