This study was conducted to investigate the effects of bulb size (10, 15, 20, 25 cm) on growth and yield characteristics of edible canna in Jeju region from 20 May to 24 Nov. 2003. The results obtained were summarized as follows; Plant height grew big 78.8~129.1 cm as bulb size increased 10~25 cm. Leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, tillers and bulb per plant and stem diameter were the same trend with plant height response. Fresh matter yield increased 29.0~91.1 MT/ha as bulb size increased from 10 to 25 cm. Fresh weight of above-ground part and bulb yield were the same trend with fresh matter yield.
The bulb storability of eight red and ten yellow onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivars grown primarily in Korea was evaluated. During storage, sprouting occurred earlier in red cultivars than in yellow cultivars. In addition, the ratio of sprouted to unsprouted bulbs increased more rapidly in red cultivars than in yellow cultivars. However, not all yellow cultivars had strong storabilities. Bulb storability of three yellow cultivars was as poor as that of red cultivars, suggesting only a slight possibility of a pleiotropic effect of color and bulb storability. Meanwhile, $F_3$ lines of a red cultivar selected based on stronger storabilities showed intermediate storabilities between those of the red and yellow cultivars, implying that strong storability could be obtained by successive selection. In contrast, $F_1$ hybrids from crosses between yellow and red breeding lines showed poor storability compared with the yellow cultivars, indicating that poor storability may be dominant over strong storability. The relationships between color and other traits that potentially affect storability, such as fresh and dry weight, water content, and firmness of bulbs, were evaluated. No significant differences in these traits were observed between the two colors, although the water content of yellow cultivars and the dry weight of red cultivars were slightly higher than their counterparts. Correlation analyses between bulb storability and other traits, including weight, water content, and firmness, also showed no significant correlations. In this study, no correlations were identified between bulb color, storability, and other traits. However, based on these results, red cultivars with stronger storabilities could be developed through successive selection of bulbs with stronger storabilities.
This experiment was conducted to establish shade-method suited to on tile artificial propagation of Lycoris radiata HERB. The ligilt intensity in the native habitatwas 30 kux in March and 3.2 Klux from June to sept. The average light intensityin tile open area was 137 Klux in June. The plant height and number of Ieaves wasgood at the 35% to 55% shadeing net. Bloonling time of Lycoris radiata HERB was inthe last of Sept. Yeild of bulb was increased in 35% to 55% of shadeing net.
In order to obtain basic information for breeding varieties of onion which is suitable at the southern part of Korea. 222 early mature variety and 219 late mature variety were grown from sep.1993 to jun. 1994 at experimental field of Muan-Gun area, and yield components and yield of onion plant ware observed. Early mature onion cv. Changnyeongchunghwan-gkeukjoseng and Keumjungjoseng showed higher yield than other early mature variety used in the experiment. It showed relatively long plant height and leaf sheath length and, height of bulb and diameter of bulb and high weight of bulb. Late mature onion cv. Chunjudaego showed higher yield than other late mature variety used in the experiment. It showed relatively long plant height and leaf sheath length and diameter of bulb, and high weight of bulb. Therefore, it was concluded that Changnyeongchunghwangkeukjoseng,Keumjungjoseng and Chunjudaego were the most suitable early and late mature varieties with high yield at the southern part of Korea.

Plants regenerated from in vitro cultures are associated with chromosomal variations, which have been generally found in long-term culture. Reducing plant culture age is one of the ways to reduce genetic and epigenetic changes. The present study focused on the efficient in vitro propagation of lily cultivars and has intensified to speed up bulb propagation for cryopreservation. The multiplication process applied in this experiment uses starting material, which the newly small bulb formed from bulb-scales in two lily cultivars. The adventitious bulb from bulb-scale tissue cultured on three different media following Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 1 g/L Charcoal, MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone with or without Charcoal, respectively. After about seven weeks, there is little change in the number of newly propagated bulbs in small bulbs of the two media. Compared to the both mediums, the number of the propagated bulbs is increased 5 times in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal. After about seven weeks, the results of the propagation showed that the number of the propagated bulbs is increased 5 times in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal compared to the both mediums. The number of propagated bulbs ranged from 5 to 6 and 4 to 6 with an average of 5 in Tropicalpink and Greenstar cultivars, respectively. There is little change in the number of newly propagated bulbs in small bulbs of other media. The multiplication process applied in this study may save in vitro culture period and effort.
Acrobeles ciliatus (von Linstow, 1877) and Plectus parietinus (Bastian, 1865) are newly collected from Korea. Acrobeles is similar to those nematode belongs to Rhabditidae and Panagrolaimidae by having terminal bulb without medium bulb but different by having complex, vines shaped labial attachment. A. ciliatus differed from other Acrobeles species by lateral fields with two incisures, primary axils U-shaped, and secondary axils V-shaped. Head region set off with the neck, three high labial probolae present, each having 5 tines at inner margins and 5-7 at outer margins, and two elongate apical tines. Also, it differs from the longer female body. Plectus parietinus is distinguished from all other species of Plectus by the prominent hypodermal glands, the relatively small amphid, the distinct and well set-off lips and by the subdorsal distal caudal seta on the left side of the tail. Stoma without stylet. Oesophagus about 1/4 of total body length with terminal bulb. Anus ca. $100{\mu}m$ from posterior extremity. Vulva is at middle of body. Have spinneret on tail tip.

This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of changes in onion (cv. 'Turbo' and 'Changnyongdaego') bulb quality during storage at room and cold temperature. Increased weight loss was found in the onion bulb stored at both cold and room temperature conditions. 4% weight loss was found in bulbs stored at room temperature and 2% at cold storage as compared to fresh cultivated onion bulb; after three months. Initially, there was no significant difference in the firmness of bulbs between cultivars and storage conditions. Hunter a value of bulb stored at room temperature was higher than the value of bulb stored at cold temperature. 27% and 7.9% decay was found after three months in 'Changnyongdaego' and 'Turbo' cultivars stored under room temperature condition respectively. In contrast, only 2% decay was noticed in both cultivars stored at cold storage condition. Hunter L value of onion bulb gradually decreased in both room and cold temperature storage conditions. In conclusion, quality of onion bulb can be maintained until three months. For long term storage and quality maintenance, under room temperature conditions a resistance cultivar should be selected.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of bulb size, type of media, depth of planting, and nutrient compositions on sprouting and growth of tissue cultured garlic microbulbs in hydroponic culture. Early and increased sprouting were observed when the microbulbs were transplanted into soil planted in shallow (1 cm in depth), while bulb size and fresh weight of the whole plant increased in deep planting (3 cm in depth). Bulb size have greatly influenced on not only sprouting rate but also plant growth after planting. Large bulbs resulted in high growth rate such as number of leaves, stem width, plant height, and increase in bulb size after planting. It was shown that Oriental nutrient solution (N=0.17, P=0.45, K=1.29, Ca=2.44, and Mg=0.98 me/L) was more effective in sprouting and further growth of microbulbs as compared to Yamazaki solution (N=0.27, P=0.16, K=1.50, Ca=1.36 and Mg=0.78 me/L). Microbulbs grown in mixture of leaf mould + bark + sand or Baroko showed the most vigrous growth.
Shallot is a foreign crop introduced from France in 1995 as a new overwintering field crop with an aim to develop as an export crop. During the introductory cultivation trials, several problems were raised such as premature growth depression in early summer, sensitivity to summer moisture, and weakened vigor of the seed bulbs following successive propagations. This study was conducted to develop proper cultural methods based on annual productivity and adaptability of growing area to address and suggest solutions to some of these problems. Bulb weight was 18.7 g and bulb yield per 10a was 4,113 kg in 1995. In 1996, bulb weight increased to 25.8 g, while bulbs yield per 10a deceased to 2,013 kg. This trend continued in 1997 so that bulb weight increased, and yield per 10a decreased as compared to those in 1996. However, in 1998, both bulb weight (21.1 kg) and yield per 10a (1,246 kg) decreased significantly as compared to those of the previous years. Plant growth from planting to April in the coastal area was better than in other areas. However, the plant growth thereafter until early July was better in the semi-highland area. As a result, the bulb yield in the semi-highland area was 57% more than that in the lowland areas such as the coastal area.
The crops recommended for the plant factory system are diverse. The importance of planting density in the plant factory is being recognized. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal planting density for growth and quality of kohlrabi in a closed-type plant factory system. The kohlrabi was grown under fluorescent lamps and nutrient film technique system. The growth and quality of kohlrabi were investigated under four different planting densities ($22plants/m^2(15{\times}30cm)$, $27plants/m^2(15{\times}25cm)$, and $33plants/m^2(15{\times}20cm)$). There were no significant interactions between Shoot fresh and dry weights per plant or bulb stem fresh and dry weights per plant and planting density. Shoot fresh and dry weight per area or bulb stem fresh and dry weight per area were the highest at $33plants/m^2$. There were no significant interactions between plant height, leaf area, photosynthetic rate, hardness, and chlorophyll content and planting density. Significant differences in Bulb stem height and diameter, and brix were observed. Bulb stem height and diameter and brix of kohlrabi were the highest at $22plants/m^2$. Based on our results, we conclude that the optimal planting density is $33plants/m^2$ for growth of kohlrabi, however, the optimal planting density is $22plants/m^2$ for quality of kohlrabi in a closed-type plant factory system.
