  • This paper studies the magnetic coupling between two adjacent loop antennas that are parallel to each other in a plane and presents a new practical method to avoid the resulting magnetic coupling interference. The study focuses on the high frequency radio-frequency identification (RFID) system for casino applications, where several loop antennas are closely built into a game table to monitor gaming chips. In this case, neighboring loop antennas may severely interfere with each other by magnetic coupling, which leads to the malfunction of the RFID system. In this paper, we present a practical loop antenna with a new loop switch circuit for avoiding magnetic coupling. The loop switch circuit is integrated with a matching circuit and automatically operated by using an interrogating signal from a reader. We verified the validity of the proposed design by showing that an RFID reader with the proposed antenna can exactly and separately read the gaming chips placed on the different betting zones of a game table.

  • In this paper, a co-planar waveguide(CPW)-fed zeroth-order resonant(ZOR) antenna with an improved radiation efficiency was built and tested. The unit cell of the proposed antenna consists of a series metal-insulator-metal(MIM) capacitor and a shorted shunt stub inductor. In order to reduce the antenna size and to achieve the high radiation efficiency two shorted shunt stub arms bent by 90 degree were connected to the ground plane through the via. The proposed antenna consisting of two unit cells has an open ended composite right/left-handed(CRLH) transmission line structure. As a result the dominantly radiating parts of the antenna comes from shunt stub arms and vertical vias. The total size of the fabricated zeroth-order resonant antenna is $0.22\;{\lambda}_0{\times}0.22\;{\lambda}_0$. The measured gain and efficiency of the fabricated antenna have been enhanced by 3.07 dBi and 75 %, respectively, at the zeroth-order resonant frequency of 2.97 GHz.

  • In this paper, the calibration problem of an asynchronous CDMA-based antenna array is studied. A new iterative calibration algorithm for antenna array in the presence of frequency offset error is presented. The algorithm is applicable to a non-linear array and does not require a prior knowledge of the (direction of arrivals) DOAs of the signals of any user, and it only requires the code sequence of a reference user. The algorithm is based on the two step procedures, one for estimating both channel and frequency offset and the other for estimating the unknown array gain and phase. Consequently, estimates of the DOAs, the multi-path impulse response of the reference signal sources, and the carrier frequency offset as well as the calibration of antenna array are provided. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by means of computer simulations and is verified by using field data measured through a custom-built W-CDMA test-bed.

  • An inverted-F antenna for wireless local area network(WLAN) is presented. The proposed design is based on the typical dual-band planar inverted-F antennas(PIFA), which have two tunable resonant modes. The low-profile antenna is built by stamping and designed to be mounted on the metal frame of the laptop LCD panel. The obtained antenna can perform in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and be adopted for other wireless applications. All the measurements are performed in the actual test fixture.

  • In this paper, an iterative subspace-based calibration algorithm for a CDMA-based antenna array in the presence of unknown gain and phase error is presented. The algorithm does not depend on the array geometry and does not require a prior knowledge of the Directions Of Arrival (DOA) of the signals. The method requires the code sequence of a reference user only. The proposed algorithm is based on the subspace method and root finding approach, and it provides estimates of the calibration vector, the DOA and the channel impulse response, by using the code sequence of a reference user. The performance of the proposed algorithm was investigated by means of computer simulations and was verified using field data measured through a custom-built W-CDMA test-bed. The data show that experimental results match well with the theoretical calibration algorithm. Also, teh study propose an efficient algorithm using the simulated annealing technique. This algorithm overcomes the requirement of initial guessing in the subspace-based approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a broadband vehicle antenna that can operate at the WiBro band(2.3~2.4 GHz) for a wireless internet service. The feeding of the proposed antenna consists of two T-matching networks on both side of the polyarcylate substrate, and the two T-matching networks are connected through via holes. The designed antenna was built and installed on a rear window of a commercial sedan, and the antenna performances, such as the reflection coefficients and the radiation gain are measured in the open-sight area. The received signal strength of the designed antenna was also tested in a strong field area as well as in a weak field area. The measurement results show the matching bandwidth($S_{11}$ <10 dB) of about 300 MHz in the WiBro band and the average gain of about -5.13 dBi along the azimuth direction.

  • In this paper, a slot antenna with built-in Bazooka balun aimed for a WiBro repeater was designed and fabricated. The return loss and radiation pattern of the slot antenna were improved due to the introduced Bazooka balun. This balun brings about even radiation pattern and keeps the stabilized coverage of repeater And it is easy to unite this balun with the antenna body by providing the terminal of Bazooka balun with screw shape. H-type slot was used to reduce the size of the antenna, and the slot antenna was fabricated in the structural symmetry with respect to a feeding point to afford the omni-directional radiation pattern. The simulated results were obtained by MWS(Microwave Studio Simulator) of CST company, and the measurement on the proposed antenna was conducted in an anechoic chamber equipped with a network analyzer and a far field measurement system. The measured peak gain shows 5.75 dBi and the average gain is above -0.8 dBi. The return loss remains below -12.35 dB for all frequency bands in WiBro regarded as a good performance.

  • In this paper, we designed and verified a Far-field measurement system for measuring the performance of an antenna operating in millimeter wave(W-band). For the antenna test, a measurement system should be selected according to the type of antenna, measurement items, measurement environment and period, etc. In the case of near-field measurement, it takes a lot of time because the number of measurement items increases when the antenna has multiple channels or various beams. Such an antenna can reduce the measurement time through Far-field measurement, and only necessary measurement items can be measured. Therefore, this study secured precise alignment of the far-field measurement system using a high-power laser and improved the measurement accuracy by applying a double amplifier system. The designed system was built in the anechoic chamber and verified by comparison with the verified Near-field measurement system.

  • A simple measurement system is built to estimate the dual-antenna diversity gain at 2.4GHz easily in open lab environment. To obtain multipath fading propagation channel, the system consists of two transmission horn that placed on opposite direction and a rotating stage mechanically changing the position of test dual-antenna with time over distance greater than one wavelength. Estimated diversity is nearly same as theoretical value such that measured diversity gain of 30mm separated is about 6dB similar to theoretical value of 5.7dB and increases monotonically with the increasing separation distance as predicted by the theory. Proposed measurement system that is simple enough to fit in a small space can evaluate the performance of various dual-antennas with a reasonable accuracy with lower 5% difference between the ten sets of measured waveform distribution and theoretical Rayleigh cumulative distribution.
