The construction industry consists of various and massive architectural information as an architectural process includes a variety of design stages with cooperation of many disciplines. A Building Information Modeling (BIM) serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle from inception onward. building SMART has developed Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard for interoperability of BIM based information. Several software tools are already IFC-compliant. However, there are a lot of problems related to efficient interoperability of software owing to the lack of guide regarding the software usage and insufficiency IFC interfaces of software. The purpose of this study is to suggest efficient IFC support interface development methodologies of existing IFC certified software. The scope of this study is interoperability test for open BIM based quality assurance. To achieve this purpose, the authors have classified subject of open BIM based quality assurance and investigated IFC certification process and certified software. In addition, the authors have exported and imported via IFC files using different IFC interfaces in the software for interoperability of architectural objects and their properties. Finally, the authors have suggested IFC support interface development methodologies and hereafter direction for efficient interoperability of IFC certified software based on open BIM.
Many countries have been developing BIM-based building code checking system and studies in the utilization of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) in building code checking. IFC is the open standard of BIM format. Currently, there is a disadvantage that could not include all of the attribute for the regulations of each country and there is the problem with the interoperability of the different defined IFC approach between BIM software. This study focus on developing, derived object and property by comparing through domestic regulation and IFC2x3 specification provided by the buildingSMART and classified review type depending on the interoperability of derived information. According to classified review type, the IFC data structure was established and property mapping contents were developed by including BIM software compatible information and creating a type of review plan. When the developed property mapping contents are applied into BIM-based building code checking system, checking of the BIM data generated from various fields is made effective and thus improving the interoperability of information.
A case study is a beforehand research to develope 3D architectural design guide line for building and construction. For this case study, the research investigates several cases around world such as Building Information Modeling Guide Series of U.S. GSA(General Service Administration), BIM/IFC User Guide of IAI Germany, IDM(Information Delivery Manual) of IAI Norway, CORENet of Singapore the Ministry of National Development with Building and Construction Authority, and Helsinki University of Technology Auditorium Hall 600(HUT-600) of IAI Finland. The common thing of each case is using IFC for sharing information and interoperability in the life cycle of building. Through the case study, it shows the way how the 3D architectural design guide adapted in Korean situation.
Recently, BIM has been extended to infrastructures such as roads and bridges, and the demand for BIM standard development for ports is increasing internationally. Due to the low level of utilization of classification system and drawing standards compared to other infrastructures, and the closed nature of national security facilities, ports have insufficient level of connection and sharing environment among external systems or users. In addition, since the standardization of data for port facilities is not made, it is still necessary to establish an independent DB for each system and to ensure interoperability of data between these systems since it does not have a shared environment among similar data. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop and verify IFC, the international standard for BIM, in order to cope with the BIM environment and to be commonly used in the design, construction, and maintenance of port facilities. To this end, we build a standard schema with port-specific Express Notation according to buildingSMART International's standard development methodology. First, domestic and international reference model standards were analyzed to derive components such as space and facilities of port facilities. Based on this, the components of the port facility were derived through the codification, categorization, and normalization process developed by the research team. This was extended based on the port BIM object classification system developed by the research team. Normalization results were verified by designers and associations. Then, IFC schema construction was based on Express-G data modeling based on IFC 4 * 2 Candidate, which is a bridge candidate standard based on IFC4 (ISO16739), and IFC 4 * 3 Draft, which is developed by buildingSMART International. The final schema was validated using the commercialized validation tool. In addition, in order to verify the structural verification of the port IFC schema, the transformation process was verified by converting the caisson model into a Part21 file. In the future, this result will not only be used as a delivery standard for port BIM products, but will also be applied as a linkage standard between systems and a common data format for port BIM platforms when BIM is used in the maintenance phase. In particular, it is expected to be used as a core standard for data exchange in the port maintenance stage.
As the technology of Smart City and Digital Twin is developing, techniques to integrate BIM data of infrastructure facilities into GIS are becoming more critical. Hence, this study aims to manage BIM data representing bridge and tunnel structures through the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard and to develop a method to link these IFC-compliant files to the GIS standard CityGML without loss of information. We analyze the criteria for creating BIM data for bridges and tunnels by reviewing the BIM guidelines set by each client. We use these criteria to suggest methods for data management based on InfraBIM as a specific IFC class standard. Furthermore, we perform model analysis to determine the necessary design and construction field-appropriate model process and Level of Detail (LOD). From the model analysis, we conclude that the classified BIM models can be used as base data to generate BIM models of bridges and tunnels for facility management.

The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) provides standardized product models for the building construction domain. However, the current IFC schema has limited representation for infrastructure. Several studies have examined the data schema for road and highway modeling, but not in a sufficiently comprehensive and robust manner to facilitate the overall integrated project delivery of road projects. Several discussions have focused on slope engineering for road projects, but no solution has been provided regarding the formalized parametric modeling up to now. Iterative design, analysis, and modification are observed during the process of slope design for road projects. The practitioners need to carry out the stability analysis to consider different road design alternatives, including horizontal, vertical, and cross-section designs. The procedure is neither formalized nor automated. Thus, there is a need to develop the formal representation of the product and process of slope analysis for road design. The objective of this research is to develop a formal representation (i.e., an IFC extension data schema) for slope analysis. It consists of comprehensive information required for slope analysis in a structured manner. The deliverable of this study contributes to both the formal representation of infrastructure development and, further, the automated process of slope design for road projects.
Energy consumption by buildings accounts for a large part of the world‘s energy consumption. Methods to analyze building energy consumption before construction have been studied for decades. With BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology, architects can easily export building information to data models in order to analyze the design‘s effect on building energy efficiency. Although several BIM-based energy simulation applications are currently available, utilizing these applications for energy efficiency simulation is difficult. In this paper, by comparing existing BIM-based energy applications, the authors test the building energy efficiencies estimated by some BIM models, offer ideas and solutions to problems that appeared during the test process and propose new methods for BIM-based energy evaluation based on quantitative factors.

Recently AEC industry has required construction automation according to becoming large and complex. Thus BIM-based construction project is increased and used in whole fields of AEC industry. Quantity take-off and estimation fields are important factor for decision-making in conceptual and schematic design stages of construction projects. The purpose of this study improves reliability of the estimation through QTO based on Open BIM. Scope and method to apply QTO is to select conceptual design stage through LoD(Level of Detail) in AEC field and to extract information from BIM model through analysis of IFC structure. This study proceeds three step to make BIM model and check the model quality and calculate QTO. The methodology of QTO using IFC is to verify of result in this study and expects utilizing in design stage of construction projects. The result from this study is expected to decrease the risk factor and time of estimation in the project early phase through improving reliability of schematic estimation.
Building Information Models(BIM) provides rich geometric and attribute information throughout the entire life cycle of a building and infrastructure object, while Geographic Information System(GIS) enables the detail analysis of urban issues based on the geo-spatial information in support of decision-making. The Integration of BIM and GIS data makes it possible to create a digital twin of the land in order to effectively manage smart cities. In the perspective of integrating BIM data into GIS systems, this study performs literature reviews on georeferencing techniques and identifies limitations in carrying out the georeferencing process using attribute information associated with absolute coordinates probided by Industry Foundation Classes(IFC) as a BIM standard. To address these limitations, an automated georeferencing process is proposed as a pilot study to position a IFC model with the Local Coordinate System(LCS) in GIS environments with the Reference Coordinate System(RCS). An evaluation of the proposed approach over a BIM model demonstrates that the proposed method is expected to be a great help for automatically georeferencing complex BIM models in a GIS environment, and thus provides benefits for efficient and reliable BIM and GIS integration in practice.
