Three types of commercial broiler farms were surveyed to evaluate the effects of housing and production systems on environment and performances in broiler production. Environment condition of broiler house was better in windowless type than vinyl house. Ammonia, carbon dioxide and dust in vinyl house was 28ppm, 2,000ppm, 50.5CPM, respectively. Mortality was higher in vinyl house than that of widowless broiler house. Body weights at the age of 39 days were 1,551g, 1,607g and 1,620g of vinly house, open-sided broiler house and windowless broiler house, respectively. The incidence of abnormal carcass from the vinyl house was higher than those of the others.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the feeding values of red pepper seed oil meal (RPSOM) and to investigate its dietary supplementation on broiler performances. In Exp. 1, nutritional values of RPSOM were evaluated by analyzing chemical composition and determining true metabolizable energy (TME), nitrogen corrected TME (TMEn) and true available amino acid (TAAA). RPSOM contained 22.50% of CP, 4.75% of ether extract, 27.70% of crude fiber, 4.73% of crude ash and 49.97 ppm of xanthophylls. The contents of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin were 34 mg and 31 mg/100 g DM, respectively. The values of TME and TMEn determined by force-feeding 16 roosters were 1.73 kcal/g and 1.63 kcal/g DM, respectively. The average TAAA value of 17 amino acids was 85.22%. In Exp. 2, a total of 225 Ross male broiler chicks, 3 weeks old, were randomly divided into 9 groups of 25 birds each and assigned to three experimental diets containing 0 (control), 5 or 10% RPSOM fed ad libitum for 3 weeks. No significant differences were observed in growth performances and carcass characteristics. The level of serum cholesterol in the 10% RPSOM group was significantly lower than that of the control group (113.92 vs. 137.50 mg/dl). The dietary RPSOM at 5 and 10% levels increased the content of C18:2 ${\omega}{\sigma}$ in leg muscle compared with the control group. The results suggested that RPSOM can be included into broiler feed up to 10% without any negative effects on broiler performances and physiological responses and used as a non-conventional plant protein source, if its nutritional values are well evaluated.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the present situation of broiler breeder industry, and to investigate some problems related to it in Korea. The number of broiler breeding farms were 231 in 1990. It peaked to 264 in 1992, but decreased afterward to 232 in 1995. The number of broiler parent stock were over 4 millions since 1992 except in 1993. The number of commercial chicks produced per breeding hen was around 100, which is far below to the suggested values of breeding companies. The number of hatching eggs produced per breeding hen were 168 eggs in US, 156~170 eggs in Thailand, and 160~170 eggs in China. Factors involved in the lowered performances of broiler parent stock in Korea appear to be 1) the poor isolation of breeding farms from commercial broiler farms, causing easy contamination with various diseases, 2) the failure to provide proper environment to the breeder, and 3) the failure to control body weight during laying periods.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of natural and synthetic commercial pigments on the growth performances, skin pigmentation and color difference of broiler chicks. Experimental diet was formulated to have isocalories and isonitrogen for experimental period, and xanthophyll concentration in the diet was 8.45g/1on. The experiment was conducted for six weeks with 450 broiler chicks. The birds were assigned to 10 treatment groups and each group had 15 chicks with three replications. Results showed that the types of pigments did not have any effect on body weight, feed intake and feed efficiency. The mortality was lower with higher pigment supplementation and greater in the natural pigment groups than in the synthetic ones. Dressed carcass, abdominal fat pad and gizzard weight were not significantly different among treatments. The pigmentation of shank skin was increased with high pigment supplementations, and the pigmentation effect was greater with synthetic pigments than in natural pigments. In the shank meat or skin, the color difference(L*, a*, b*, c* and h*) was not consistently related to pigmentation.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional values of rice bran and to examine effects of its dietary supplementation on broiler performances. In the first experiment, true metabolizable energy(TME), nitrogen corrected true metabolizable energy(TMEn), and true amino acid availability(TAAA) values of the rice bran were determined by force-feeding sixteen roosters(ISA-Brown). In the second experiment, 3-week-old male broiler chickens(Avian) were divided into four groups and fed each one of four experimental diets containing 0, 5, 10 or 15% rice bran for 21 days. TME and TMEn values of the rice bran(dry matter basis) were 3.25 kcal/g and 3.12 kcal/g, respectively, and the average TAAA value of the 16 amino acids was 76.21%. The average feed intake and body weight gain of the birds fed diets containing rice bran were apparently greater than those of the control group although the differences were not significant statistically. From the results, it can be concluded that feed formulation using bioavailability values, such as TMEn and TAAA, is an effective method for protecting the high variation in growth performances and that rice bran can be used for broiler feeds to 15% without any significant negative effects.
This work was designed to investigate the performances of broiler breeder hens upon the addition were vitamin and mineral supplements in feeds. Animals were divided into for feed groups such as control, T$_1$,T$_2$and T$_3$, and each treatment has four replications. All broiler breeder hens were housed individually, and were fed with identical iso-metaboilic energy and iso-protein, except for vitamins and minerals. Different sources and levels of vitamins and minerals were added to the basic feeds according to the treatments. At the end of the experiments, general laying rate(hen days), average egg weight, hatching egg laying rate(Hen day) every day. Hatching egg weight, sterility, embryo mortality, hatching rate and chick weight were examined. Although, early laying rate in all treatment groups were reduced during cold term management, general egg laying rate was increased only T$_3$group which was contanining vitamin C. However, similar results were obtained in the rates of general and hatching egg laying. General egg laying rate were somewhat higher of Control, T$_2$and T$_3$ groups than that of T$_1$group. In addition, the laying rates of general and hatching eggs slightly improved in the T$_3$group rather than those of Control group. Egg weight was reduced with the increasing of laying rate, showing the highest in the T$_3$group. The laying rate showed significantly lower value than those of any other groups. Egg weight was about 65g in T$_3$group. The results of hatching performance for production ability of Broiler breeder hens were fed experimental diet, although the rates of non-hatched and hatched eggs increased in order of Control, T$_1$T$_2$and T$_3$groups. However, the rate of embryo mortality was declined in order Control, T$_1$T$_2$and T$_3$groups.

The competency of garlic and pennywort to improve broiler chicken growth and influence intestinal microbial communities and fatty acid composition of breast meat were studied. Two hundred forty, "day-old" chicks were randomly allocated to 4 treatment groups consisting of 6 replications of 10 chicks in each pen. The groups were assigned to receive treatment diets as follows: i) basal diet (control), ii) basal diet plus 0.5% garlic powder (GP), iii) basal diet plus 0.5% pennywort powder (PW) and iv) 0.002% virginiamycin (VM). Birds were killed at day 42 and intestinal samples were collected to assess for Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli. The pectoralis profundus from chicken breast samples was obtained from 10 birds from each treatment group on day 42 and frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ for further analyses. Fatty acid profile of breast muscles was determined using gas liquid chromatography. Feed intake and weight gain of broilers fed with GP, PW, and VM were significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to control. Feeding chicks GP, PW, and VM significantly reduced Escherichia coli count (p<0.05) while Lactobacillus spp count were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the gut when compared to control group on day 42. Supplemented diet containing pennywort increased the C18:3n-3 fatty acid composition of chickens' breast muscle. Garlic and pennywort may be useful in modulating broiler guts as they control the enteropathogens that help to utilize feed efficiently. This subsequently enhances the growth performances of broiler chickens.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the appropriate amount of eri silkworm pupae meal (Samia ricini) to add to the broiler diet. Methods: Two hundred 1-day-old male chicks with initial weight at 50.03±0.56 g/chick were divided into four groups (five replicates per group and ten chicks per replicate): a control group fed a corn-soybean diet and experimental groups supplemented with 5%, 10%, or 15% eri silkworm pupae meal. All experimental diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous and formulated respecting nutrient requirements. Growth performances were collected during the experimental period and other parameters were collected at the end of experiment when broilers reached thirty-eight days old. Results: A higher cold carcass weight and skin yellowness in the broilers fed 10% eri silkworm pupae meal compared with the other groups (p<0.05). Therefore, supplementation with 10% eri silkworm pupae meal is suggested for the broiler diet formulation because it did not cause any serious negative consequences on growth performance, health status, carcass characteristics and meat quality. However, the usage of eri silkworm pupae meal at 15% is not recommend because it led to negative outcomes Conclusion: The addition of eri silkworm pupae at 10% can be used as an alternative protein sources for broiler chickens which provided benefits on cold carcass weight and skin yellowness without adverse effects.
The efficient use as a protein source for poultry of full fat soybean (FFSB) treated under various processes, i. e. steaming under pressure 40 lbs/sq. inch for 5, 10 or 15 minutes or roasting in a baking oven at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20, 30 or 40 minutes or extruding was compared with that of soybean meal. Eight hundred straight run broiler chicks (AA 707) were randomly allotted into 8 treatments of 4 replicates, fed with, rations containing either kind of the above mentioned FFSB for 6 weeks (Wks 1-7). The protein content of the diets for chicks during 1-3, 3-6 and 6-7 weeks of age was 21, 19 and 17% respectively. The result revealed that steaming can destroy 76-92% of the trypsin inhibitor activity (TlA) in soybean, particularly that at 15 minutes, while roasting can get rid of only 13-28% TlA. Chicks fed roasted FFSB had an enlarged pancreas and showed inferior performances to the steaming and the extrusion products. Steaming should be at least 10-15 minutes in order to obtain the comparable performances to those of the extrusion or of the soybean meal. The extruded FFSB showed the best feed conversion ratio. This might be due to the very fine particle of the product.
The experiment was conducted with 144 broiler chicks from day-old to 5 weeks of age to investigate the efficacy of a water additive in broiler production. The chicks were randomly distributed into four different treatments namely T1 (control), T2 (water additive as per recommendation level), T3 (25% less than recommendation) and T4 (25% more than recommendation). Body weight of control group was higher in 2nd week of age, but at the end of the experiment additive groups showed higher values compare to control (p<0.05). Body weight gain was increased and feed conversion ratio was improved in the additives groups during the finishing and total period, although feed intake was different among the additive groups (p<0.05). When the hematological parameters were evaluated, packed cell volume and total erythrocytes counts were increased in the additive group that received 25% more than recommendation, and hemoglobin in 25% less than recommendation group. Mean cell volume and mean cell hemoglobin of the additive groups showed lower (p<0.05) values compare to the control, but other parameters were not affected. Sales price and profit were significantly higher in the additive groups compare to the control, although total production cost was increased in the additive groups (p<0.05). All levels of water additive increased profit in comparison with the control but 25% less than recommendation level appeared to be most profitable and cost effective. It also suggests that any additive considered for poultry, must undergo trial for determining efficacy as well as its cost effectiveness for application.
