Novel Hybrid Content Synchronization Scheme for Augmented Broadcasting Services

  • As a new hybrid broadcasting service, augmented broadcasting shows enhanced broadcasting content on a large TV screen, while augmented reality (AR) on a mobile device augments additional graphical content onto an input image from the device's own camera to provide useful and convenient information for users. A one-sided broadcasting service using AR has already been attempted in virtual advertisements during sport broadcasts. However, because its augmentation is preprocessed before the video image is transmitted, the viewer at home may have no influence on this formation; and no interaction for the user is possible unless the viewer has a direct connection to the content provider. Augmented broadcasting technology enables viewers to watch mixed broadcasting content only when they want such service and to watch original broadcasting content when they do not. To realize an augmented broadcasting service, the most important issue is to resolve the hybrid content synchronization over heterogeneous broadcast and broadband networks. This paper proposes a novel hybrid content synchronization scheme for an augmented broadcasting service and presents its implementation and results in a terrestrial DTV environment.

양방향 데이터 방송 환경에서의 부가 영상 콘텐츠 제작 모델 연구 (A Study about Data Broadcasting Sub-Content Architecture Model in Bi-directional Broadcasting Environment)

  • The demand of digital broadcasting via networks has increased slowly in spite of the development of bidirectional broadcasting service technology and the effort of revitalization are actively performed nowadays. There are some reasons that the content differentiation is necessary. First, bidirectional digital broadcasting has no special content that attracts public attention. Second, bidirectional video content such as UCC is expected to revitalize economy due to simplification of authoring tool and user's desire to communicate interactively. So this paper proposes the data broadcasting sub-content architecture model by scenario using original data broadcasting content. At the same time, we design the content object metadata schema from the analysis of original data broadcasting content. It is restricted by 25 metadata in order to make it more smoothly working contents under the ubiquitous environment. This proposal is expected to affect the revitalization of content development and find out new sub-content model by rework original content.

  • 본 논문은 TV-Anytime 메타데이터를 이용하여 맞춤형 방송 서비스를 제공하기 위한 맞춤형 방송 전송 시스템의 설계 및 구현에 관한 것이다. TV-Anytime은 저장장치를 갖는 수신기 환경에서 ECG(Electronic Content Guide) 및 콘텐츠 기술(description) 메타데이더를 이용하여 시청자가 원하는 시간에 시청자의 취향에 따른 개인화된 방송 콘텐츠 서비스를 제공하기 위한 메타데이터 스키마 및 메타데이터 부호화/전송 등의 제반 표준 및 서비스 모델을 제시하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 제시하는 TV-Anytime 기반의 맞춤형 방송 전송 시스템은 전송 서버단에서의 메타데이터 이진 부호화 및 MPEG-2 TS(Transport Stream) 다중화, 그리고 단말에서의 역다중화. 복호화 및 메타데이터 기반의 맞춤형 콘텐츠 소비 기능 등을 포함한다. 본 논문에서는 제시하는 전송 시스템의 각 기능 모듈들의 설계 및 구현의 상세 기술과 맞춤형 콘텐츠 서비스 시나리오를 이용한 서버-단말간의 검증 결과를 기술한다.

멀티 플랫폼 시대 지상파 방송 콘텐츠 유통 전략 방안 (Terrestrial Broadcasting Content Distribution Strategy in the Multi Platform Environment)

  • Due to the development of network and device, it is called mobile age that boosts various distribution routes of multi-media content and it constructs a new digital content consumption trend. N-screen is one of the new-introduced examples in the digital age and broadcasting industry believes it as a crisis and challenge as well. It becomes a ubiquitous multi-media environment that people watch multi-media content everywhere and any time they want to and competition happens beyond the boundaries such as network industry, terminal industry, pay TV market, traditional terrestrial TV, etc. And then how should the broadcasting service prepare for the N-screen business? The present research proposes a few terrestial broadcasting content strategies in the multi platform environment. First, instead of N-screen, it proposes multi platform, especially One Source Multi Platform(OSMP). Second, so-called 'Integrated Terrestrial Broadcasting OSMP Alliance(IBPA)' must be founded. Third, IBPA should support multi-tasking UX for viewers to have rich experience. Last, it becomes more important and necessary to support local terrestrial broadcasting service for public service in the multi platform age.

온라인 방송콘텐츠 유통 중개업자의 핵심 역량과 유통구조 개선효과에 관한 사례 (방송콘텐츠 다운로드 시장을 중심으로) (Core Competency of Content Intermediary and Improvement in Content Distribution Channel: Focused on Broadcasting Content Download Market)

  • 디지털 기술과 정보통신망의 발달로 인하여 다매체-다채널이 등장함에 따라 방송콘텐츠시장의 유통경로가 더욱 다원화 되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 온라인 방송콘텐츠 다운로드 시장을 중심으로 온라인 방송콘텐츠 시장의 문제점을 해결하는데 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있는 콘텐츠 유통 중개업자(Master Contents Provider, MCP)의 핵심 역량차원과 유통구조개선 효과간의 관계를 사례연구를 통해 규명하고자 하였다. MCP의 핵심 역량은 자원기반이론(Resource_based theory)을 조사하여 물적, 재무, 인적, 기술, 무형 및 조직자원으로 도출하였으며, 6개 자원중심으로 MCP의 핵심 역량에 대한 사례조사를 수행하였다. 사례연구 결과, 온라인 방송콘텐츠 다운로드 시장의 문제점은 불법거래 및 저작권 침해, 지상파 방송사업자와 웹하드 서비스업체 간의 직접거래로 인한 거래비용증가, 방송콘텐츠 서비스 품질 하락, 온라인 방송콘텐츠 다운로드 시장의 파편화 등으로 규명되었다. MCP의 물적, 재무, 기술, 인적, 무형 및 조직자원이 결합된 MCP의 핵심 역량이 온라인 방송콘텐츠 다운로드 시장의 문제점을 해결하여 유통시장의 효율성 및 투명성을 제고하고, 유통구조를 통합하며, 나아가 지상파 방송사업자와 웹하드 서비스업체의 매출 증대에 크게 기여하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

A Methodology to Estimate the Unit Price of User Contribution in P2P Streaming System - A Case Study

  • Peer-to-Peer content delivery technology recently begins to be used not only for file sharing applications such as eDonkey but also for every kind of content services. KBS, a broadcasting company in Korea, is aggressively driving to apply Peer-to-Peer technology to KBS's commercial internet video service but we found that there are two big huddles. First, end users may refuse to share their own resources for KBS's cost reduction using Peer-to-Peer content delivery technology. Second, it may cause that the number of free-riders increases and the efficiency of the overall system would fall. From commercial service provider's perspective, we have to avoid that end users have unfavorable impressions on the service and the usefulness of Peer-to-Peer technology decreases. In order to overcome these problems, we studied how to offer incentive to end users and how much incentive would be reasonable, and then applied the result to real service for verification.

Metadata Broadcasting for Personalized Service: A Practical Solution

  • As the number of broadcasting channels and programs increases rapidly, the importance of personalized service has been emphasized. In this paper, we propose a practical framework of metadata broadcasting to provide personalized service according to user preferences and various terminal/network conditions. First, we present an overall system architecture of a metadata broadcasting system and then propose several core technologies (particularly in the parts of metadata authoring, metadata encoding, and metadata-based personalized content consumption). For interoperability, the proposed solution is designed to be compliant with the relevant standards of the TV-Anytime Forum, MPEG-7 Systems, and MPEG-2 Systems. Considering a home network environment, we also propose a metadata-based content adaptation scheme. Each component technology has been implemented individually, integrated into an end-to-end prototype broadcasting system, and successfully tested with a set of personalized service scenarios that are also developed in this study.

  • This paper introduces interactive multi-view contents authoring system based on MPEG-4. The MPEG-4 standard, which aims to provide an object based audiovisual coding tool, has been developed to address the emerging needs from communications, interactive broadcasting as well as from mixed service models resulting from technological convergence. Due to the feature of object based coding, it has been considered that MPEG-4 is the most suitable for interactive broadcasting content production. This feature is suitable for creation of the content which provides multiple views of object or scene in interactive manner. In this paper, we categorize the multi-view visual content into two types: panoramic multi-view content and object multi-view content. And design and implementation of the authoring system for interactive multi-view contents is presented. We believe that the proposed method can be effectively used for further deployment of MPEG-4 content to various interactive applications.

Design of 8K Broadcasting System based on MMT over Heterogeneous Networks

  • This paper presents the design of a broadcasting scenario and system for an 8K-resolution content. Due to an 8K content is four times larger than the 4K content in terms of size, many technologies such as content acquisition, video coding, and transmission are required to deal with it. Therefore, high-quality video and audio for 8K (ultra-high definition television) service is not possible to be transmitted only using the current terrestrial broadcasting system. The proposed broadcasting system divides the 8K content into four 4K contents by area, and each area is hierarchically encoded by Scalable High-efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) into three layers: L0, L1, and L2. Every part of the 8K video content divided into areas and hierarchy is independently treated. These parts are transmitted over heterogeneous networks such as digital broadcasting and broadband networks after going through several processes of generating signal messages, encapsulation, and packetization based on MPEG media transport. We propose three methods of generating streams at the sending entity to merge the divided streams into the original content at the receiving entity. First, we design the composition information, which defines the presentation structure for displays. Second, a descriptor for content synchronization is included in the signal message. Finally, we define the rules for generating "packet_id" among the packet header fields and design the transmission scheduler to acquire the divided streams quickly. We implement the 8K broadcasting system by adapting the proposed methods and show that the 8K-resolution contents are stably received and serviced with a low delay.

맞춤형 콘텐츠 서비스를 위한 TV-Anytime 기반 콘텐츠 패키징 (Content Packaging based on TV-Anytime for Personalized Content Services)

  • 다수의 미디어들을 하나의 콘텐츠로 조합하여 다양한 맞춤형의 콘텐츠 소비 기능을 제공하는 콘텐츠 패키지(package)가 새로운 형태의 미디어로 표준화되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 TV-Anytime Phase-2(TVA-2)에 제안하여 현재 표준화 작업중인 패키지 데이터 모델을 제시하고자 한다. TVA-2 패키지 기반의 교육용 콘텐츠를 사용한 맞춤형 서비스 시나리오를 제안하고, 제안된 맞춤형 교육용 콘텐츠 서비스 시나리오를 지원하기 위한 TV-Anytime 패키징 기술을 설명한다. 또한, TV-Anytime 패키징 기술에 의해 다양한 종류의 콘텐츠를 매체에 상관없이 사용자의 선호도 및 소비환경(usage environment)에 적합하게 대화형(interactive) 소비 경험을 제공하는 맞춤형 서비스가 가능함을 보인다.
