  • Recently, fiber-reinforced plastic(FRP) wraps are blown as an effective material for the enhancement and rehabilitation of aged concrete structures. The purpose of this investigation is to experimentally investigate behavior of concrete cylinder wrapped with FRP materials. Experimental parameters include compressive strength of concrete cylinder, FRP material, and confinement ratio. This paper presents the results of experimental studies on the performance of concrete cylinder specimens externally wrapped with aramid, carbon and glass fiber reinforced Polymer sheets. Test specimens were loaded in uniaxial compression. Axial load, axial and lateral strains were investigated to evaluate the stress-strain behavior, ultimate strength ultimate strain etc. Test results showed that the concrete strength and confinement ratio, defined as the ratio of transverse confinement stress and transverse strain were the most influential factors affecting the stress-strain behavior of confined concrete. More FRP layers showed the better confinement by increasing the compressive strength of test cylinders. In case of test cylinders with higher compressive strength, FRP wraps increased the compressive strength but decreased the compressive sham of concrete test cylinders, that resulted in prominent brittle failure mode. The failure of confined concrete was induced by the rupture of FRP material at the stain, being much smaller than the ultimate strain of FRP material.

  • Reinforced-concrete (RC) columns are frequently designed and constructed. other types of columns includes composite types such as concrete-filled tube columns (CFT). Hollow RC columns may be effective in reducing both the self weight of columns and total amount of materials used. This is due to the fact that a hollow RC column possesses larger moment of inertia than that of solid RC columns of same cross sectional area. Despite the effectiveness the hollow RC column has not been popular because of its poor ductility performance. While the transverse reinforcements are effective in controlling the brittle failure of the outside concrete, they are not capable of resisting the failure of concrete of inner face which is in unconfined state of stress. To overcome these drawbacks, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete (ICH RC), a new column type, was proposed in the previous researches. In this study, the fire resistance performance of the ICH RC columns was analyzed through a series of extensive heat transfer analyses using the nonlinear-material model program. Also, effect of factors such as the hollowness ratio, thickness of the concrete, and thickness of the internal tube on the fire resistance performance were extensively studied. Then the factors that enhance the fire-resistant performance of ICH RC were presented and analyzed.

  • This paper is to introduce an article published in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2003. In this research, a fracture mechanics model is developed to illustrate the importance of time-dependence far brittle fractured rock. In particular a model is developed fer the time-dependent degradation of rock joint cohesion. Degradation of joint cohesion is modeled as the time-dependent breaking of intact patches or rock bridges along the joint surface. A fracture mechanics model is developed utilizing subcritical crack growth, which results in a closed-form solution for joint cohesion as a function of time. As an example, a rock block containing rock bridges subjected to plane sliding is analyzed. The cohesion is found to continually decrease, at first slowly and then more rapidly. At a particular value of time the cohesion reduces to value that results in slope instability. A second example is given where variations in some of the material parameters are assumed. A probabilistic slope analysis is conducted, and the probability of failure as a function of time is predicted. The probability of failure is found to increase with time, from an initial value of 5% to a value at 100 years of over 40%. These examples show the importance of being able to predict the time-dependent behavior of a rock mass containing discontinuities, even for relatively short-term rock structures.

  • The application of sprayed waterproofing membrane with high adhesion and ductility is considered to be promising as a measure for repair and reinforcement of a tunnel structure. Therefore, a powder-type and one-component membrane prototype with high tensile and bond strengths was made in this study. Then, its reinforcement effect on a shield segment was evaluated by carrying out a series of full-scale loading tests of segment specimens on which the membrane was sprayed. From the tests, it was confirmed that the initial cracking loads increased by approximately 34% due to cracking retardation by membrane coating. Even though the increase of failure loads were not so high as cracking loads, the strain-softening behaviors were observed from specimens coated by the membrane. Therefore, it is expected that the membrane coated on the inner surface of a lining might be effective in preventing its brittle failure.

  • Thinner and lighter structural members can be designed by utilizing the high stiffness and toughness, and high compressive strength of UHPC(ultra high performance concrete), which reaches up to 200MPa. The punching shear capacity of UHPC was investigated in this paper aiming for the application of UHPC to bridge decks. Six square slabs were fabricated and punching shear test was performed under fixed boundary condition. Different thicknesses of test slabs, which were 40mm and 70mm, were selected. The shape ratio of loading plates were ranged between 1.0~2.5. 40mm thickness slabs showed longer softening region after the peak load and, on the other hand, 70mm thickness slabs revealed a more brittle shear failure. Experimental results were analyzed using various existing punching shear predicting equations. Ductal$^{(R)}$ equation and JSCE equation better predicted for 40mm slabs, and Harajli et al. equation and ACI-Ductal$^{(R)}$ equation better suited for 70mm slabs. Nevertheless generally they didn't well predict the test results. A new punching shear equation which was derived based on the actual failure mechanism was proposed. The proposed equation appeared to better predict the punching shear strength of UHPC than other available equations.

The purpose of this investigation is to suggest the basic information for the structural safety, The major variables are com preSSlve strength of concrete, shear confinement ratio, and loading types. The test results showed that the load capaCIty of speCImen subjected to monotOI1lC loading had more than that of specimen subjected to one way cyclic loading. The failure modes of specimens under cyclic loading were concentrated at 5-20cm apart region from beam-column joint face and ductility index are increased with increasing of shear confinement ratio. • The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars in concrete structures has been increased as an alternative of steel reinforcement which has shown greater vulnerability to corrosion problem. However, the long-term performance of concrete members with FRP reinforcement is still questioned in comparison to the used of steel reinforcement. This study presents the results of an experimental study on the long-term behaviors of GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) bar reinforced concrete beams after exposed to accelerated aging in an environmental chamber with temperature of $46^{\circ}C$ ($115^{\circ}F$) and 80% of relative humidity up to 300 days. The objectives of this research was to compare strength degradation and change of ductility between GFRP reinforced concrete beams and steel reinforcement beams after accelerated aging. Two types (wrapped and sand-coated surface) of GFRP bars and steel were reinforced. in concrete beams. Test results show that the failure modes of GFRP bar reinforced concrete beams are very similar with traditional RC beams, and the change of load-carrying capacity of steel reinforcing concrete beam is greater than that of GFRP bar reinforcing concrete beam under the accelerated aging. Test result also shows that the use of GFRP reinforcing in concrete could be introduced more brittle failure than that of steel reinforcing for practical application. The deformability factor up to compression failures indicates no significant variation before and after exposure of accelerated aging.

  • Even though electroless Hi and Sn-Ag-Cu solder are widely used materials in electronic packaging applications, interfacial reactions of the ternary Ni-Cu~Sn system have not been known well because of their complexity. Because the growth of intermetallics at the interface affects reliability of solder joint, the intermetallics in Ni-Cu-Sn system should be identified, and their growth should be investigated. Therefore, in present study, interfacial reactions between electroless Ni UB7f and 95.5Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu alloy were investigated focusing on morphology of the IMCs, thermodynamics, and growth kinetics. The IMCs that appear during a reflow and an aging are different each other. In early stage of a reflow, ternary IMC whose composition is Ni$_{22}$Cu$_{29}$Sn$_{49}$ forms firstly. Due to the lack of Cu diffusion, Ni$_{34}$Cu$_{6}$Sn$_{60}$ phase begins growing in a further reflow. Finally, the Ni$_{22}$Cu$_{29}$Sn$_{49}$ IMC grows abnormally and spalls into the molten solder. The transition of the IMCs from Ni$_{22}$Cu$_{29}$Sn$_{49}$ to Ni$_{34}$Cu$_{6}$Sn$_{60}$ was observed at a specific temperature. From the measurement of activation energy of each IMC, growth kinetics was discussed. In contrast to the reflow, three kinds of IMCs (Ni$_{22}$Cu$_{29}$Sn$_{49}$, Ni$_{20}$Cu$_{28}$Au$_{5}$, and Ni$_{34}$Cu$_{6}$Sn$_{60}$) were observed in order during an aging. All of the IMCs were well attached on UBM. Au in the quaternary IMC, which originates from immersion Au plating, prevents abnormal growth and separation of the IMC. Growth of each IMC is very dependent to the aging temperature because of its high activation energy. Besides the IMCs at the interface, plate-like Ag3Sn IMC grows as solder bump size inside solder bump. The abnormally grown Ni$_{22}$Cu$_{29}$Sn$_{49}$ and Ag$_3$Sn IMCs can be origins of brittle failure.failure.

  • To realize the recycling utilization of waste concrete and alleviate the shortage of resources, 11 specimens of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled circular steel tube columns were designed and manufactured in this study, and the cyclic loading tests on the specimens of columns were also carried out respectively. The hysteretic curves, skeleton curves and performance indicators of columns were obtained and analysed in detail. Besides, the finite element model of columns was established through OpenSees software, which considered the adverse effect of recycled coarse aggregate (RA) replacement rates and the constraint effect of circular steel tube on internal RAC. The numerical calculation curves of columns are in good agreement with the experimental curves, which shows that the numerical model is relatively reasonable. On this basis, a series of nonlinear parameters analysis on the hysteretic behaviors of columns were also investigated. The results are as follows: When the replacement rates of RA increases from 0 to 100%, the peak loads of columns decreases by 7.78% and the ductility decreases slightly. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the bearing capacity of columns increases first and then decreases, but the ductility of columns decreases rapidly. Increasing the wall thickness of circular steel tube is very profitable to improve the bearing capacity and ductility of columns. When the section steel ratio increases from 5.54% to 9.99%, although the bearing capacity of columns is improved, it has no obvious contribution to improve the ductility of columns. With the decrease of shear span ratio, the bearing capacity of columns increases obviously, but the ductility decreases, and the failure mode of columns develops into brittle shear failure. Therefore, in the engineering design of columns, the situation of small shear span ratio (i.e., short columns) should be avoided as far as possible. Based on this, the calculation model on the skeleton curves of columns was established by the theoretical analysis and fitting method, so as to determine the main characteristic points in the model. The effectiveness of skeleton curve model is verified by comparing with the test skeleton curves.

  • In this study, in order to confirm the seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames retrofitted with Wall Friction Damper(WFD), the test was conducted by setting two-story Reinforced concrete frames (reference specimen, OMF-N and specimen retrofitted with internal H-shaped steel frame and WFD, OMF-ALL(H)) as main variables. The WFD Seismic Retrofit Method is a mixture of strength improvement and energy dissipation methods. To prevent the pre-destruction of existing structure by friction force before sufficient energy dissipation of WFD, the internal H-shaped steel frame and chemical anchor that penetrates the side of the beam were used to install WFD. According to the test results, the OMF-N specimen showed an brittle failure pattern caused by the shear force of the R/C column after the maximum strength was expressed. The OMF-ALL(H) specimen showed that the reduction of pinching effect and the failure of the RC column occurred. Also, the maximum strength, cumulative energy dissipation and ductility of OMF-ALL(H) increased 3.01 times, 7.2 times and 1.72 times for OMF-N. As a results, test results revealed that the WFD Seismic Retrofit Method installed on Reinforced concrete structure improves the seismic performance and the strengthening effect is valid.
