This paper presented solutions of displacement and stress for a circular opening which is reinforced with grouted rock bolt. It satisfies the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) or generalized Hoek-Brown (H-B) failure criterion, and exhibits elastic-brittle-plastic or strain-softening behavior. The numerical stepwise produce for strain-softening rock mass reinforced with grouted rock bolt was developed with non-associative flow rules and two segments piecewise linear functions related to a principle strain-dependent plastic parameter, to model the transition from peak to residual strength. Three models of the interaction mechanism between grouted rock bolt and surrounding rock proposed by Fahimifar and Soroush (2005) were adopted. Based on the axial symmetrical plane strain assumption, the theoretical solution of the displacement and stress were proposed for a circular tunnel excavated in elastic-brittle-plastic and strain-softening rock mass compatible with M-C or generalized H-B failure criterion, which is reinforced with grouted rock bolt. It showed that Fahimifar and Soroush's (2005) solution is a special case of the proposed solution for n = 0.5. Further, the proposed method is validated through example comparison calculated by MATLAB programming. Meanwhile, some particular examples for M-C or generalized H-B failure criterion have been conducted, and parametric studies were carried out to highlight the influence of different parameters (e.g., the very good, average and very poor rock mass). The results showed that, stress field in plastic region of surrounding rock with considering the supporting effectiveness of the grouted rock bolt is more than that without considering the effectiveness of the grouted rock bolt, and the convergence and plastic radius are reduced.
Many hydropower stations in southwest China are located in regions of brittle rock mass with high geo-stresses. Under these conditions deep fractured zones often occur in the sidewalls of the underground caverns of a power station. The theory and methods of fracture and damage mechanics are therefore adopted to study the phenomena. First a flexibility matrix is developed to describe initial geometric imperfections of a jointed rock mass. This model takes into account the area and orientation of the fractured surfaces of multiple joint sets, as well as spacing and density of joints. Using the assumption of the equivalent strain principle, a damage constitutive model is established based on the brittle fracture criterion. In addition the theory of fracture mechanics is applied to analyze the occurrence of secondary cracks during a cavern excavation. The failure criterion, for rock bridge coalescence and the damage evolution equation, has been derived and a new sub-program integrated into the FLAC-3D software. The model has then been applied to the stability analysis of an underground cavern group of a hydropower station in Sichuan province, China. The results of this method are compared with those obtained by using a conventional elasto-plastic model and splitting depth calculated by the splitting failure criterion proposed in a previous study. The results are also compared with the depth of the relaxation and fracture zone in the surrounding rock measured by field monitoring. The distribution of the splitting zone obtained both by the proposed model and by the field monitoring measurements are consistent to the validity of the theory developed herein.
Miniaturized specimen technology Permits mechanical behavior to be determined using a minimum volume of material. The technology is useful in case of not collecting a large amount of materials from industrial equipments. Five kinds of accelerated degradation materials were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. Three kinds of specimens were prepared for impact testing. In order to increase plastic constraint of subsize specimen, side-groove was introduced. Results between subsize and full size impact testing were compared. Size effects correlations were developed for the impact properties of turbine rotor material. These correlations successfully predict the ductile brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of full size Charpy impact specimens based on subsize specimen data.
For performance-based design using nonlinear static analysis, it is required to predict the inelastic behavior of structural members accurately. In the present study, a nonlinear numerical analysis was peformed to develop the method describing the moment-curvature relationship of structural wall with boundary confinement. Through the numerical analysis, variations of behavioral characteristics and failure mechanism with the arrangement of vertical reinforcement and the length of boundary confinement were studied. According to the analysis, the maximum moment-carrying capacity of structural walls with adequately confined boundary elements is developed at the moment the unconfined concrete reaches the ultimate compressive strain. Walls with flexural re-bars concentrated on the boundaries fails in a brittle manner. As vortical re-bars in the web increases, the brittle failure is prevented and a ductile failure occurs. Based on the findings, moment-curvature curves for walls with a variety of re-bar arrangement were developed. According to the proposed relationships, deformability of the structural walls wth boundary confinement increases as the compressive strength of the confined concrete increases compared to the applied compressive force.
Strength of reinforced concrete beams can easily be increased by the use of externally bonded CFRP composites. However, the mode of failure of CFRP strengthened beam is usually brittle due to tension-shear failure in the concrete substrate or bond failure near the CFRP-Concrete interface. In order to improve the ductility of CFRP strengthened concrete beams, critical variables need to be investigated. This experimental and analytical research focused on a series of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP composites to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility. The main variables were the amount of CFRP composites, the amount of longitudinal and shear reinforcement, and the effect of CFRP end diagonal anchorage system. Sixteen full-scale beams were investigated. A new design guideline was proposed according to the effects of the above-mentioned variables. The experimental and analytical results were found to be in good agreement.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the flexural rehabilitation of the pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by the steel plate. Main test parameters were the existence and the magnitude of the pre-loading at the flexural of rehabilitation and the tensile reinforcement ratio of the specimens. Seven beam specimens were tested to investigate the effectiveness of the rehabilitation method. Test results showed that the ultimate load capacities of the pre-loaded specimens were higher than not-pre-loaded specimens at the rehabilitation. The cause of the pharameter was analyzed if is suggested that the bond failure between the concrete and the strengthening steel plate occured prior to the yielding of the tension reinforcement. The member flexural stiffnesses, were similar regardless of the load conditions at retrofit and failure modes showed brittle aspect caused by rip-off failure.

Structural behavior of R/C deep beams was investigated and compared to those of specimens with CFRP Grids. Test results show that the crushing of compression strut for the unstrengthened R/C deep beams is changed to the group of several diagonal cracks at mid-depth within the sheat span. Strengthened specimens grow to be more ductile after the redistribution of internal force on the CFRP Grids. The failure mode and variations of strains in the specimens are dependent on the shear span-to-depth ratio. The lower the shear span-to-depth ratio, the bigger failure load and the less variations in strain are observed. Additional anchorage of CFRP Grids does not only cause the improvement in the internal resistance, but also control the brittle shear failure of specimen after reaching the maximum loads.

The ageing cause in many porcelain suspension insulators which occur on transmission and distribution line with dead-end stings is mechanical stress in interface between porcelain and cement materials. It is known that the principal mechanical stress which give electrical failure is the results of the displacement is due to cement growth. We studied an analysing method to find out a deformation of brittle porcelain with a thermal expansion of cement for suspension insulator. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that cement volume growths affect severely to be mechanical failure ageing. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that axial loading affects of Porcelain insulators severely to be mechanical failure ageing.

This paper presents comprehensive test data on the effect of Epoxy-Bonded Steel Plates on the ultimate strengths, ductilities, failure modes and structural deformations of flexural members strengthened with steel plates on the tension face. To achieve the purpose, six specimens with and without Epoxy-Bonded steel Plates were tested. The results show that Epoxy-Bonded Steel Plate is very effective for strengthening the damaged structure, That is, plated members have enhanced ultimate strength at all load levels until failure. However, the failure mode of plated members is brittle as soon as steel plate separates from concrete face.

In this study, a numerical analysis that can effectively predict the effect of strengthening of cracked flexural members is developed using axial deformation link elements. Concrete and interface between concrete and repair material are considered as quasi-brittle material. Reinforcing bars and reinforcing steel plates are assumed to perform as elasto-plastic materials. Unloading behavior of axial deformation link element is implemented. In the developed numerical model, a flexural member is intentionally cracked by pre-loading, then, the cracked member is repaired using extra elements, and reloaded. The results from analysis of repaired flexural members agrees well with available experiment results. Also, it was shown that the effect of strengthening and the change of failure mode with respect to the time for strengthening and thickness of repair materials. Based on the results, it was determined that the developed numerical model has a good agreement for determining failure modes and effect of strengthening in cracked flexural members. By utilizing the developed numerical analysis, the time and dimension of external strengthening in an existing cracked flexural member with predition of failure mechanism can be determined.
