Improvement of dynamic responses of a pedestrian bridge by utilizing decorative wind chimes

  • A novel approach is presented to improve dynamic responses of a pedestrian bridge by utilizing decorative wind chimes. Through wind tunnel tests, it was verified that wind chimes can provide stabilization effects against flutter instability, especially at positive or negative wind angles of attack. At zero degrees of angle of attack, the wind chimes can change the flutter pattern from rapid divergence to gradual divergence. The decorative wind chimes can also provide damping effects to suppress the lateral sway motion of the bridge caused by pedestrian footfalls and wind forces. For this purpose, the swing frequency of the wind chimes should be about the same as the structural frequency, which can be achieved by adjusting the swing length of the wind chimes. The mass and the swing damping level are other two important and mutually interactive parameters in addition to the swing length. In general, 3% to 5% swing damping is necessary to achieve favorite results. In the study case, the equivalent damping level of the entire system can be increased from originally assumed 1% up to 5% by using optimized wind chimes.

  • Intra-oral films of 155 patients were taken on the areas of Gold Crown-Bridges, S. P. Bridges and Partial Dentures. And the author observed periodontal ligaments widening rates, the presence of periapical lesions and the alveolar bone patterns on the Partial Denture Saddle portions. The results were as follows : 1. Periodontal ligaments a) Periodontal ligaments widening rate increased obviously with the duration of wearing those prosthetic appliances. b) Periodontal ligaments widening rate was the highest in partial denture wearing patients, and then that of S. P. Crown Bridge patients, Gold Crown Bridge wearing females, Gold Crown Bridge males were the sequences. 2. Periapical lesions a) Periapical lesions increased with the wearing duration of those prosthetic appliances. But they did not increase in proportion to the duration. Periapical lesions were about the same in the teeth with those appliances showing relatively higher rate in Partial Denture abutment teeth and the lowest in Gold-Bridge abutment teeth. 3. Alveolar bone of Partial Denture saddle portion One third of all(32%) were normal with their smooth and compact bone pattern so that they were considered to perform normal function.

  • 공용하중의 증가 등에 따른 교량 바닥판의 성능향상 시 바닥판 두께, 콘크리트 강도, 철근강도 그리고 철근비와 더불어 보강재비에 의하여 바닥판의 파괴양상은 바뀌어 질 수 있다. 일반적으로 교량 바닥판의 파괴양상은 주철근 및 배력철근의 항복 이후에 펀칭전단파괴가 발생하는 것으로 나타나고 있으며, 외부부착공법을 적용함에 있어서 이러한 파괴양상을 유지해야 될 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구에서는 바닥판에 사용된 철근비 및 보강재비 등을 주요변수로 하여 항복선 이론 및 소성 펀칭모델 등을 적용한 항복강도 및 파괴강도를 해석하였으며, 철근비에 따른 임계보강재량을 제안하였다.

Implementation of Cuckoo Search Optimized Firing Scheme in 5-Level Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter for Power Quality Improvement

  • Multilevel inverters have appeared as a successful and utilitarian solution in many power applications. The prime objective of an inverter is to keep the fundamental component of the output voltage of a multilevel inverter at a preferred value. Equally important is the need to keep the harmonic components in the output voltage within stated harmonic limits. Therefore, the basis of this research is to develop a harmonic minimization function that optimizes the switching angles of cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. Due to benefits of the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm, it is applied to determine the switching angles, which are further used to generate the switching pattern for firing the H-bridges of multilevel inverter. Simulation results are compared with SPWM based firing scheme. The switching frequency for SPWM firing scheme is taken as 200 Hz since the switching losses are increased when switching frequency is high. To validate the ability of Cuckoo Search optimized firing scheme in minimization of harmonics, experimental results obtained from hardware prototype of Five Level Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter equipped with a FPGA controller are presented to verify the simulation results.

CNN-based damage identification method of tied-arch bridge using spatial-spectral information

  • In the structural health monitoring field, damage detection has been commonly carried out based on the structural model and the engineering features related to the model. However, the extracted features are often subjected to various errors, which makes the pattern recognition for damage detection still challenging. In this study, an automated damage identification method is presented for hanger cables in a tied-arch bridge using a convolutional neural network (CNN). Raw measurement data for Fourier amplitude spectra (FAS) of acceleration responses are used without a complex data pre-processing for modal identification. A CNN is a kind of deep neural network that typically consists of convolution, pooling, and fully-connected layers. A numerical simulation study was performed for multiple damage detection in the hangers using ambient wind vibration data on the bridge deck. The results show that the current CNN using FAS data performs better under various damage states than the CNN using time-history data and the traditional neural network using FAS. Robustness of the present CNN has been proven under various observational noise levels and wind speeds.

  • Taegeuk is Korea's flagship pattern, which has been handed down over centuries. During the Joseon era, it had an influence on all places such as the left side of the building and arrangement. In addition, Taegeuk was a bowl which contains the philosophy of right now. In Neo-Confucianism, it was understood that yin and yang were divided into five elements and created the universe. In buildings, Taegeuk was mostly used as decoration on the stylobate and doors. Taegeuk contains the fundamental thoughts about the creation of the universe. In architecture, it plays the role of a bridge between spaces. In ancient times, it was used as byeoksa. Entering the Joseon era, it played a role as a border. In the late Joseon dynasty, it was important in protecting the country. A Taegeuk pattern varies in diverse shapes to represent its dynamic aspects. After passing through many different stages, it developed into the pattern of today.

관절경적 회전근 개 봉합술: 이열 봉합술 및 교량형 봉합술식 (Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: Double Rows & Suture Bridge Technique)

  • 이상적인 회전근 개 봉합술은 봉합 초기 높은 고정 강도로 봉합 부위 건-골간 간격 형성을 최소화시키며, 재활 과정 중 발생하는 반복적인 부하에도 견디는 기계적 강도를 나타내어 궁극적으로 건-골 조직의 생물학적 치유를 얻을 수 있는 방법이다. 현재 사용되는 회전근 개 봉합술 중 교량형 봉합술식은 회전근 개 부착 부위를 해부학적으로 복원할 수 있으며, 건-골간 압력 접촉 면적을 증가시키고, 방사형의 봉합 형태를 통하여 회전근 개 전체에 균등하게 압력을 분포함으로 부하를 분산시키며 생물학적 치유를 향상시킨다. 또한 건-골간 간격 형성을 최소화하며 전단 및 회전 응력에 저항력을 주어 정상과 동일한 해부학적 복원력으로 빠른 재활 운동을 가능하게 한다. 그러나 비록 교량형 봉합술식이 다른 술식에 비해 우수한 생역학적 특성을 나타내도 임상적으로 더 좋은 결과를 초래한다는 증거는 없으며, 이열 봉합술과는 비슷한 재파열율이 보고되고 있다. 회전근 개봉합술의 선택은 회전근 개 파열 크기, 파열 양상 및 건의 상태 등을 고려하여 적절하게 선택하여야 할 것으로 사료된다.

기존선에서 가설교량 시공에 따른 열차의 주행안전성 평가 (Evaluation of Train Running Safety During Construction of Temporary Bridge on Existing Railway)

  • 선로하부를 굴착한 후의 가설교량 설치공법은 이동형 가로보를 갖는 공법으로 시공시 전차선 차단 및 레일절단이 불필요하고 열차운행 횟수가 많은 복선부에서도 적용 가능한 공법이다. 본 논문에서는 공사구간이 곡선부(R400)구간으로 가설교량 공법 시공 후의 변위특성을 검토하기 위해 변위계를 설치하고 열차 통과 시의 윤중 횡압을 계측하여 곡선부(R400)의 주행안전성 검토를 평가하였다. 측정결과 가설교량을 통과시 열차종별 윤중과 횡압의 최대값은 각각 국외 궤도성능평가 기준의 51%, 81% 수준으로 분석되어 윤중, 횡압 발생에 따른 궤도 안전성 측면에서는 큰 문제가 없을 것으로 판단된다. 또한 주행안전성의 평가기준이 되는 최대 탈선계수와 최대 윤중감소율은 열차종별에 관계없이 허용한계치의 49% 수준으로 그 기준치에는 못 미치는 것으로 나타나 열차 통과시의 주행안전성 확보에는 큰 문제가 없는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Operational modal analysis of a long-span suspension bridge under different earthquake events

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) has gained in popularity in recent years since it can assess the performance and condition of instrumented structures in real time and provide valuable information to the asset's manager and owner. Operational modal analysis plays an important role in SHM and it involves the determination of natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes of a constructed structure based on measured dynamic data. This paper presents the operational modal analysis and seismic response characterization of the Tsing Ma Suspension Bridge of 2,160 m long subjected to different earthquake events. Three kinds of events, i.e., short-distance, middle-distance and long-distance earthquakes are taken into account. A fast Bayesian modal identification method is used to carry out the operational modal analysis. The modal properties of the bridge are identified and compared by use of the field monitoring data acquired before and after the earthquake for each type of the events. Research emphasis is given on identifying the predominant modes of the seismic responses in the deck during short-distance, middle-distance and long-distance earthquakes, respectively, and characterizing the response pattern of various structural portions (deck, towers, main cables, etc.) under different types of earthquakes. Since the bridge is over 2,000 m long, the seismic wave would arrive at the tower/anchorage basements of the two side spans at different time instants. The behaviors of structural dynamic responses on the Tsing Yi side span and on the Ma Wan side span under each type of the earthquake events are compared. The results obtained from this study would be beneficial to the seismic design of future long-span bridges to be built around Hong Kong (e.g., the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge).
