at Jeonju Wonkwang University Oriental Medicine hospital postpartum care center. Results The majority of women(79.2%) had planned breast-feeding. However, only 32.1% of women currently have fed breast-feeding. 58% of mothers who did partial breast-feeding and breast-feeding currently have planned to breast-feed more than 7 months. The main reason of bottle-fed is concern of insufficient amount of breast milk(72.2%). Also the main reason of breast-feeding is good for baby's health(90%). The average score on the test of the understanding about the methods and advantages of breast-feeding was $13.98{\pm}1.92$ out of total 18.49.1% of women thought that taking herbal medicine would affect baby during breast-feeding. Also 71.7% of women thought that herbal treatments (acupuncture, herbal medicine) would be helpful when the amount of breast milk is insufficient. Conclusions This survey has showed that in spite of full breast-feeding plan, the percentage of actual breast-feeding rate is low. Timely education is needed to increase breast-feeding rate. It is worth to consider herbal treatment to increase breast milk amount. In addition to that it is necessary to create a hospital environment in which mothers can easily begin breast-feeding as soon as possible after delivery. Moreover, beyond the medical field, political and social supports for breast-feeding are needed.
This study was conducted to investigate the concentrations and infants intake of sodium and potassium from human milk during the first 5 months of lactation. The sodium concentrations of the milk during the lactation appeared 21.1, 18.1, 15.9, 12.4, 10.6 and 11.4 mg/100g at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 months of lactation respectively. The potassium concentrations of the milk 48.5, 43.3, 40.8, 39.9, 40.5 and 38.5 respectively, Na/K ratio of the milk were 0.76, 0.75, 0.70, 0.56, 0.46 and 0.53(mEqu\\mEq). Sodium intakes of breast-fed infants were 106.9, 108.4, 90.6, 82.5 and 95.6mg/day during the lactation. Potassium intakes of the infants were 255.7, 276.0, 289.7, 294.6, 320.3 and 318.3mg/day. Sodium and potassium concentrations in infant formula averaged 23.62 and 67.61 mg/100g which was 1.90 and 1.69 times as those of breast milk at 3 month of lactation. Commercial whole milks had 39.53 and 135.22mg/100g of sodium and potassium respectively which was 3.19 and 3.39 times as those of the milk. From this study, reevaluation of sodium and potassium intakes if breast-fel infants was merited and the regulation of that minerals in infant formula is need to lower the renal solute load of formula-fed infants.(Korean J Nutrition 34(1):23-29, 2001)
To investigate the energy, protein, lipid, and lactose intakes of breast-fed infants of lacto-ove-vegetarians, 25 infants(13 boys, 10 girls) were examined on the 0.5th, 1st, 2nd, and 3nd months of lactation. The amount of breast milk intake was determined by a test-weighing method, and the energy content of protein, lipid, and lactose was calculated using the Atwater factor. Thedaily energy intake for boys averaged 316, 436, 447, and 431kcal and that of girls averaged 284, 399, 401, and 390kcal during lactation, respectively. Average energy intake of boys from milk from 2nd week to the 3rd month postpartum was significantly higher than that of girls(p<0.05), because milk intake volume of boys was much higher than that of girls. The protein intake of boys on 2nd week-3rd month averaged 7.33g/day and that of girls averaged 6.29g/day. The lipid intake of 2nd week, months averaged 21.8g/day and that of girls averaged 20.1g/day. The lactose intake of boys averaged 45.48g/day, while that of girls averaged 41.09g/day. The mean intake of protein and lactose in boys was significantly higher than that of girls.
This study examined the effect of CLA, flaxseed oil and fish oil and their combination forms on crude fat of liver and fatty acid profiles of liver, breast and thigh meat in broiler chicks. A total of 72, 1-day-old Cobb broilers were assigned to 6 groups, and fed an experimental diet supplemented with 5 different fat sources; conjugated linoleic acid (2% CLA), flaxseed oil (2% FXO), fish oil (2% FHO), CLA and flaxseed oil combination (1:1; 2% CXO), and CLA and fish oil combination (1:1; 2% CHO). Eight birds per treatment were processed, and liver, breast and thigh samples were investigated at 21 d of age. As a result of this study, most fatty acids of liver, breast and thigh meat were influenced by fat sources supplemented in the diet (p<0.05). CLA addition resulted in an increase of crude fat and saturated fatty acid (SFA) content but a concomitant decrease in n-3 to n-6 fatty acid ratio was observed in liver (p<0.05). Moreover, the same trends of SFA and n-3 to n-6 fatty acid ratio were also observed in breast and thigh meats of birds fed CLA alone. In the CXO-fed group or CHO-fed group, n-3 and n-3 to n-6 fatty acid ratio in both breast and thigh meat increased compared with CLA group, while SFA content decreased (p<0.05). FHO fed-groups had the lowest proportion of n-6 fatty acid in both breast and thigh meats compared to other fat source treatments (p<0.05). In conclusion, the increased levels of crude fat and SFA in liver and meats obtained by feeding CLA could be reduced by its combination with FXO or FHO. In addition, the combination of CLA and FXO or FHO fed to broiler chicks could increase the n-3 to n-6 fatty acid ratio of their meat along with the deposition of CLA.
The breast feeding habits of 507 college students were evaluated between March 27 to April 26 (2006). Data were collected from self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS for Windows V.12.0. The study population consisted of 245 (48.3%) male and 262 (51.7%) female college students that answered ‘yes’ when asked whether they had been breast feed. A total of 52.7% of the study population were fed with breast milk (most frequent answer), as opposed to 11.0% that were fed with infant formula (least frequent answer) during their infancy. When asked whether they ever got educated on breast feeding, 78.1% of the college student subjects answered ‘no’. A total of 95.1% of the female college students replied ‘yes’ when asked if they intended to breast feed their child. Moreover, 62.2% of the college student subjects indicated that their parents had an influence on their decision to breast feed. A comparison between male and female college students indicated that female college students had a superior knowledge level of the general characteristics of breast feeding over the male subjects (p<0.05) . Moreover, a comparison of the different levels of college attained suggest that freshman college students had the highest knowledge level, followed by senior, sophomore and junior college students in terms of advantage, BF Tabu (p<0.05). Also, students provided with education on breast feeding had a higher knowledge level than college students with no formal education. In summary, the results suggest that the knowledge on breast feeding in college students were different by general characteristics such as gender, major and school year, and education on breast feeding in advance was appeared to be an important factor, therefore nutritional education course on breast feeding is recommended for the college students.
Korean breast-fed(BF) and formula-fed (FF) infants(n=31) were studied at their age of 1, 2 and 3 months to compare their intakes of energy, protein, lipid and lactose. Formulas had more energy, protein and lipid than breast milk, but the former had less lactose than the latter. The milk consumption of the FF infants was, however, greater than that of the BF infants with wide individual variation. As a result, the FF infants took in more energy, protein and lipid than the BF infants except lactose. The total daily caloric intakes(kcal/day) of the BF infants were 521.418 and 425 at their age of 1, 2 and 3 months respectively, and those of the FF infants were 676.752 and 723(at their age of 1, 2 and 3 months respectively). Daily protein intakes(g/days) of the BF infants were 9.5, 8.0 and 7.6 at their age of 1, 2 and 3 months respectively, and those of the FF infants were 13.9, 15.5 and 14.8(at their age of 1, 2 and 3 months respectively). The energy and protein of both the BF and the FF infants were deficient compared to the present Recommended Nutrient Allowances, and the deficiency of the BF infants was greater than that of the FF infants. But the energy intakes per kg of body weight of the FF infants at their age of 1 and 2 months were more than the present recommended energy allowances. And the protein intake per kg of body weight of the FF infant at the age of 1 month was the same as the present recommended protein allowances.
A study was conducted to investigate the fattening performance, physico-chemical properties of breast meat, vaccine titers in cross bred meat type hybrid chicks fed organic sulfur. Total three hundred and sixty chicks of eight weeks old were replaced in individual cage from 8 to 10 weeks old. Four levels of organic sulfur (0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0%) containing 45% sulfur were added into basal diet containing CP 19% and ME 2,950 kcal/kg. Weight gain, feed intake, fred conversion were weekly measured. The proximate composition, physico-chemical properties of breast meat, vaccine titer and sensory characteristics were examined at the end of experiment. Weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion of birds fed organic sulfur were not statistically different with control. There were no significant difference in feed intake and feed conversion. However, abdominal fat(%) of birds fed organic sulfur tended to increase compared with control. Crude fat of breast meat decreased significantly in organic sulfur treatments(P<0.05). The red color of breast meat seemed to increase but was not statistically different among the treatments. Cooking loss showed decrements significantly in organic sulfur treatments(P<0.05). Mechanical Hardness, cohesiveness and springiness were prone to be high and gumminess greatly high in breast meat of birds fed organic sulfur addition compared with control. Juiciness tended to increase and greasiness decreased(P<0.05) in organic sulfur treatments by the sensory evaluation. The overall acceptability of the breast meat was the highest at 2.0% organic sulfur added chicks(P<0.01). There were no different blood cholesterol, AST, ALT and BUN.
An experiment was conducted with three hundred and twenty broiler chickens to evaluate the influence of supplementation of probiotic on growth, microbiological status and carcass quality of chickens. The probiotic contained similar proportions of six strains of variable organisms namely Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Aspergillus oryzae, Streptococcus faecium and Torulopsis sps and was fed at 100 mg/kg diet. The body weight and feed conversion of probiotic fed groups were superior (p<0.05) compared to the control group in the 4th, 5th and 6th weeks. The chickens fed the diet with probiotic had lower (p<0.05) numbers of coliforms and Campylobacter than chickens fed the control diet. All chickens' carcasses on the control diet were positive for Salmonella while only 16 of the 40 carcasses were positive from chickens fed diets containing probiotic. The leg and breast meat of probiotic fed chickens were higher (p<0.05) in moisture, protein and ash, and lower in fat as compared to the leg and breast meat of control chickens.
The objectives of this study were to examine the growth pattern of infants by anthropometric measurement according to the 5 feeding practices of infants with the subject of two hundred healthy newborn babies from their birth till sixty month of age at intervals of two months. Breast group(BF, n=38), formula group(FF, n=102) and mixed group(ME, n=14) were fed breast milk, formula milk, breast and formula milk, from birth till 6 mo. of age, respectively. Convert 1 group (C1F, n=14) and covert 2 group(CF, n=32) were fed breast milk and mixed milk at 2 mo. of age afterthat switched to formula milk, respectively. From these, the following results were made. All the infants of this study showed superiority to Korean standard growth rate in regards to each growth item for each month age. In the case of males, at their birth, the subscapular skinfold thickness and the total skin fold thickness in the BF group was significantly larger than in MF group and FF group(p<0.05). At 6th month age, the chese circumference of MF group was 45.9cm, and significantly larger than those of BF, FF and C2F groups(p<0.05). In the case of females, at theri birth and 2nd month age, there was no difference among all the feeding groups in regards to each growth rate. At 4th month age, the Kauf index of C1F group was 16.21 and significantly lower than those of four groups(p<0.05). And total skinfold thickness in BF group was larger than in C1F group. The increase rate per month age of all growth items were larger at 2nd month age than at the later months both in males and in females. And until 2nd month age males showed more increase than females in regards to each growth item but after 2nd month age, this sapect did not show up. Multiple linear regression was used to determine predictive factors for infant growth. It was expected that at 6th month age, in the measurement of head circumference and chest circumference and cross-sectional fat area, BF-males were bigger by 22-39% of the explanation index than the infants of other groups. As a result, in spite of the significant lower intakes of energy and nutrients in breast-fed infants than in formula-fed infants, breast-fed infants showed more growth than the average of Korean infant standard growth rate at every month age, and showed no significant growth difference among feeding groups.
