  • In this paper, in order to apply the $\pi$/4 shift QPSK to TCM, we propose the $\pi$/8 shift 8PSK modulation technique and the trellis-coded $\pi$/8 shift 8PSK performing signal set expansion and set partition by phase difference. In addition, the Viterbi decoder with branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance of the first phase difference as well as the Lth phase difference is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate(BER) performance in differential detection of the trellis-coded $\pi$/8 shift 8 PSK. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually the same as the sliding multiple de- tection by using the branch metric with first and Lth order phase difference. We investigate the performance of the uncoded .pi. /4 shift QPSK and the trellis-coded $\pi$/8 shift 8PSK with or without the Lth phase difference metric in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channel using the Monte Carlo simulation. The study shows that the $\pi$/4 shift QPSK with the Trellis-code i. e. the trellis-coded $\pi$/8 shift 8PSK is an attractive scheme for power and bandlimited systems and especially, the Viterbi decoder with first and Lth phase difference metrics improves BER performance. Also, the next proposed algorithm can be used in the TC $\pi$/8 shift 8PSK as well as TC MDPSK.

  • Noise predictive maximum likelihood(NPML) detector embeds noise predictions/ whitening process in branch metric calculation of Viterbi detector and improves the reliability of branch metric computation. Therefore, PRML detector with a noise predictor achieves some performance improvement and has an advantage of low complexity. This paper shows that NP(1221)ML system through noise predictive PR-equalized signal has less complexity and better performance than high order PR(12321)ML system in high density perpendicular magnetic recording. The simulation results are evaluated using (1) random sequence and (2) run length limited (1,7) sequence, and they are applied to linear channel and nonlinear channel with normalized linear density $1.0{\leq}K_p{\leq}3.0$.

  • This paper proposes the architecture of high-performance Viterbi decoder circuit. The proposed circuit does not require additional memory to calculate the branch metrics because it uses the characteristics of the branch data. The speed of the Viterbi decoder circuit is increased up to 75% by rearranging the path metric data in SRAM and registers properly for fast add-compare-select operations. We described the proposed Viterbi decoder circuit in Verilog HDL and synthesized the gate-level circuit using 130nm standard cell library. The synthesized circuit consists of 8,858 gates and its maximum operating frequency is 130MHz.

  • In this paper a fixed-delay trellis search with decision feedback (FDTrS/DF) for high-density DVD systems (4.7-15GB) is proposed and implemented with FPGA. The proposed FDTrS/DF is derived by transforming the binary tree search structure into trellis search structure implying that FDTrS/DF performs better than the singnal detection techniques based on tree search structure such as FDTS/DF and SSD/DF. Advantages of FDTrS/DF are significant reductions in hardware complexity due to the unique structure of FDTrS composed of only one trellis stage requiring no traceback procedure usually implemented in the Viterbi detector. Also in this paper the PDFS/DF and SSD/DF orginally proposed for high-density magnetic recording systems are modified for the DVD system and compared with the proposed FDTrS/DF. In order to increase speed in the FPGA implementation the pipelining technique and absolute branch metric (instead of square branch metric) are applied. The proposed FDTrS/DF is shown to provide the best performance among various signal detection techniques such as PRML, DFE, FDTS/DF and SSD/DF even with a small hardware complexity.

  • In this paper, we propose the TCM(Trellis coded modulation) decoding scheme that reduces the number of operations in branch metric with STBC(space time block codes) channel information and present the implementation results. The proposed TCM decoding scheme needs only 1 signal point in each TCM subset. Using bias point scheme, It detects the minimum distance symbol. The proposed TCM decoding scheme can reduce the branch metric calculations. In case of 16QAM 8 subset, the reduction ratio is about 50% and for 64QAM 8 subset, about 80% reduction can be obtained. The results of logic synthesis for the TCM and STBC decoder with the proposed scheme are 57.6K gate count.

Therefore, PRML detector with a noise predictor achieves some performance improvement and has an advantage of low complexity. This thesis random sequences are applied to linear channel. In perpendicular magnetic recording density KP=2.5, NP(121)ML and NP(1221)ML detection system which is based on a noise predictive PR-equalized signal are evaluated by the Performance through a computing simulation. Therefore, NPML systems are implemented and are verified by VHDL.

  • Pipelined architecture improves processor performance by overlapping the execution of several different instructions. The effect of control hazard stalls the pipeline and reduces processor performance. In order to reduce the effect of control hazard caused by branch, we proposes a new approach combining both branch prediction and two paths strategy. In addition, we verify the performance improvement in a proposed approach by utilizing system performance metric CPI rather than BEP.

  • In this paper, we compare the performance of channel estimators with the L$_{1}$-norm and L$_{2}$-norm criteria in impulaive noise environment, and show than the L$_{1}$-norm criterion is appropriate for that situation. Also, it is shown that the performance of the conventional maximum likelihood sequence detector(MLSD) can be improved by applying the same principle to mobile channels. That is, the performance of the conventional MLSD, which is known to be optimal under the Gaussian noise assumption, degrades in the impulsive noise of radio mobile communication channels. So, we proposed the MLSD which can reduce the effect of impulsive noise effectively by applying the results of channel estimators. Finally, it is confirmed by computer simulation that the performance of MLSD is significantly affected depending on the types of branch metrics, and that, in the impulsive noise environments, the proposed one with new branch metrics performs better thatn the conventional branch metric, l y(k)-s(k) l$^{[-992]}$ .

  • In this paper, the Viterbi decoder containing new branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance with multiple order phase differences is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) in the differential detection of the trellis-coded MDPSK-OFDM. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually same as the multiple Phase differential detection method that uses the branch metric with multiple phase differences. Also, we describe the Viterbi algorithm in order to use this branch metrics. Our study shows that such a Viterbi decoder improves BER performance without sacrificing bandwidth and power efficiency. Also, the proposed algorithm can be used in the single carrier modulation.
