Effects of demineralizaton-inhibition procedures on the bond strength of brackets bonded to demineralized enamel surface

  • Objective: To study and compare the effects of different demineralization-inhibition methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) and fracture mode of an adhesive used to bond orthodontic brackets to demineralized enamel surfaces. Methods: Eighty freshly extracted, human maxillary premolars were divided into 4 equal groups and demineralized over the course of 21 days. Brackets were bonded to the demineralized enamel of teeth in Group 1. In Group 2, bonding was performed following resin infiltration ($ICON^{(R)}$, DMG, Hamburg, Germany). Before bonding, pre-treatment with acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) or solutions containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate with 2% neutral sodium fluoride (CPP-ACP/wF) was performed in Groups 3 and 4, respectively. The SBS values of the brackets were measured and recorded following mechanical shearing of the bracket from the tooth surface. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were determined aft er the brackets failed. Statistical comparisons were performed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey's post-tests, and G-tests. Results: Significant differences were found in some of the intergroup comparisons of the SBS values (F = 39.287, p < 0.001). No significant differences were found between the values for the APF-gel and control groups, whereas significantly higher SBS values were recorded for the resin-infiltrated and CPP-ACP/wF-treated groups. The ARI scores were also significantly different among the 4 groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Tooth surfaces exposed to resin infiltration and CPP-ACP/wF application showed higher debonding forces than the untreated, demineralized surfaces.

Shear bond strength of brackets bonded with different self etching primers (Self etching primer를 사용하여 부착된 교정용 브라켓의 전단결합강도의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of 4 self etching primers by measuring the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and examining the failure pattern of bracket-tooth interfaces. Methods: Seventy-five, defect-free, premolars were randomly assigned into five groups: control group (37% phosphoric acid + Transbond XT primer) and self etching primer treated groups (Transbond Plus self etching primer, Unifil bond, Clearfil SE bond, and Adhese). The shear bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine and the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the brackets after debonding was assessed by the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Results: The results showed that the groups conditioned with self etching primer had significantly lower shear bond strength than the control group (p < 0.05), although clinically acceptable. However, there were no significant differences in shear bond strength among the self etching primer groups (p > 0.05). Evaluation of the ARI scores indicated there was less resin remnant on the teeth in the groups conditioned with self etching primers, although not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that all four of the self etching primers have shown acceptable bond strength for clinical use.

Shear bond strength of orthodontic bracket with hydrophilic primer (친수성 프라이머를 이용한 교정용 브라켓 접착시의 전단결합강도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of hydrophilic primer, which claim to retain adequate bond strength on moistened enamel resulting from moisture or saliva contamination, by comparing the shear bond strength and adhesive failure patterns of brackets bonded using hydrophilic primer and conventional hydrophobic primer. Brackets were bonded to human premolars embedded in metal cylinders utilizing light cured adhesive, primed with either a hydrophilic primer(Transbond fm primer) or a conventional hydrophobic primer(Transbond XT primer). Each sample was exposed to varying degrees of artificial saliva contamination during the priming process. The shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine, and the adhesive failure patterns after debonding were visually examined by strereomicroscope and assessed using the adhesive remnant index(ARI). The results were as follows 1. In dry conditions, no significant differences in shear bond strength between Transbond W and Transbond XT primers were found. 2. Transbond MIP primer exhibited a significantly higher shear bond strength than Transbond XT primer in saliva-contaminated conditions, regardless of the degree of contamination. 3. When contaminated with one coat of saliva, Transbond MIP primer did not exhibit significant differences in shear bond strength compared to the dry condition. When contaminated with two coats of saliva, Transbond MIP primer exhibited a singnificantly lower shear bond strength compared to the dry condition. 4. The adhesive remnant index of the adhesive failure pattern had a tendency to decrease, as the degree of saliva contamination increased. Bracket-adhesive interface failure was observed in more than half of the saliva contaminated samples utilizing Transbond MIP primer, whereas the bond failure sites of the Transbond XT primer samples occurred almost exclusively at the adhesive-enamel interface in saliva-contaminated conditions. The results of this study suggest that in cases where moisture control is difficult, Transbond MIP primer is an effective alternative to conventional hydrophobic primers.

A STUDY ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH OF LIGHT-CURED GLASS IONOMER CEMENT (광중합형 글래스아이오노머 시멘트의 전단결합강도에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of light cured glass ionomer cement to enamel surface which treated with $37\%$ phosphoric acid, $10\%$ polyacrylic acid, $1.23\%$ acidulated phosphate fluoride gel and no etching agent. To compare the shear bond strength of glass ionomer cement, light-cured composite resin and chemically-cured composite resin were empoloyed as controls. Eight experiments groups were composed. 10 specimens of each group were bonded by metal bracket by tested in universal testing machine for shear bond strength, in stereoscope for adhesive remnants index. The data were evaluated statistically by SPSS/PC+. The results were as follows. 1. Among the groups of $37\%$ phosphoric acid treated and dry and bonded with light cured glass ionomer, light cured composite resin, and chemically cured composite resin, the shear bond strength of glass ionomer group showed no significant difference to the others, but the shear bond strength of chemically cured resin showed statistically lower than that of light cured resin (p<0.05). 2. The shear bond strengths of glass ionomer cement to enamel treated group with $1.23\%$ acidulated phosphate fluoride gel and $10\%$ polyacrylic acid and $37\%$ phosphoric acid showed statistically higher than that of no etched enamel group(p<0.U). 3. In the groups of glass ionomer cement, the presence of moisture was not significantly effect to the shear bond strength (p<0.05). 4. After debonding, no etched enamel group showed less residual materials on the enamel surface than the group of enamel etched with $37\%$ Phosphoric acid.

Shear bond strength and debonding failure mode of ceramic brackets according to the surface treatment of porcelain (도재 표면 처리가 따른 세라믹 브라켓의 전단 접착 강도 및 탈락 양상)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength and failure mode of ceramic brackets according to the surface treatment of porcelain. Sixty Porcelain samples were randomly divided into six groups of ten samples. Then they were treated as follows: Group 1(silane only), Group 2(etching+silane), Group 3(stone+silane), Group 4(sandblasting+silane), Group 5(stone +etching+silane), Group 6(sandblasting+etching+silane) After surface treatment of porcelain, sixty Transcend 6000 brackets were bonded to the prepared porcelain surface and they were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ saline for 24 hours. An Instron universal testing machine was used to test the shear bond strength of ceramic brackets to porcelain. After debonding, bases of ceramic brackets and porcelain surfaces were examined under scanning electron microscope(SEM) to determine failure mode. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. The results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of surface-treated groups 2 to 6 was higher than that of only silane-treated group 1, and there was statistical significance. (P<0.05) 2. There was no significant difference among the groups 3 to 6. (P>0.05) 3. The shear bond strength of etching-surface treated group 2 was significantly lower than those of sandblasting-surface treated group 4, complex surface treated group 5 and group 6. 4. According to the scanning electromicroscopic images, the surface roughness of sandblasting-surface treated group 4 was less than those of the group 5 and 6, but there was no significant difference in the shear bond strength. (P>0.05) As a conclusion we can have a clinically adequate bond strength when an application of silane is done after the treatment of porcelain surface with more than one way to bond ceramic bracket on the porcelain. Also, it is considered that the sandblasting and application of silane is effective for the simplication and convenience of the treatment.

Effects of direct and indirect bonding techniques on bond strength and microleakage after thermocycling (직접 부착법과 간접 부착법이 열순환 후 부착강도와 미세누출에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets and microleakage of a tooth-adhesive-bracket complex bonded with a direct and an indirect bonding technique after thermocycling. Methods: Fifty non-carious human premolars were divided into two equal groups. In the direct bonding group a light-cured adhesive and a primer (Transbond XT) was used. In the indirect-bonding group, a light-cured adhesive (Transbond XT) and chemical-cured primer (Sondhi Rapid Set) were used. After polymerization, the teeth were kept in distilled water for 24 hours and thereafter subjected to thermal cycling (500 cycles). For the microleakage evaluation, 10 teeth from each group were further sealed with nail varnish, stained with 0.5% basic fuchsin for 24 hours, and examined under a stereomicroscope. Fifteen teeth from each group were used for SBS testing with the universal testing machine and adhesive remnant index (ARI) evaluation. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Chi-square test, and Fisher's exact test. Results: There were no statistical differences on SBS and microleakage between the two bonding techniques. The indirect bonding group had a significantly lower ARI score. Bracket failures were obtained between enamel-resin interfaces. Conclusions: The type of bonding technique did not significantly affect the amount of microleakage and SBS.

Effects of conventional and self-etching adhesive systems on bond strength of orthodontic attachments bonded to erupted and unerupted teeth (치아 맹출 유무에 대한 자가부식 접착제에 의한 교정용 부착장치의 접착강도)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and failure-mode of orthodontic buttons bonded to erupted and unerupted teeth with conventional and self-etching adhesive systems. Methods: Eighty-four erupted and 84 unerupted, human third-molar teeth were used. For both groups, the buccal surfaces of each tooth were assigned one of the following type of adhesive systems (n = 12). A, Conventional systems: 1, Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA); 2, Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply/Caulk, Milford, USA); 3, Single Bond (3M ESPE, Minnesota, USA); and B, Self-etching adhesives; 4, Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray, Okayama, Japan); 5, Transbond Plus (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA); 6, Clearfil S3 (Kuraray, Tokyo, Japan); 7, G Bond (GC, Tokyo, Japan). The SBSs of the attachments and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were recorded. Data were analyzed with analysis of variance (ANOVA), independent-sample t-test and chi-square tests. Results: When the SBSs of erupted and unerupted teeth were compared, only the Clearfil-SE Bond and G-Bond were significantly different. Bond strengths of all adhesive systems were higher in unerupted teeth than erupted teeth, except the Single-Bond system. Conclusions: When using conventional adhesives, bonding to erupted and unerupted teeth may not be significantly different. However, clinicians need to take into consideration the types of self-etching systems before usage.

EFFECTS OF PHOSPHORIC ACID CONCENTRATION ON DEPTH OF ETCH AND SHEAR BOND STRENGTH OF ORTHODONTIC BRACKETS TO BOVINE ENAMEL (인산농도가 소의 법랑질에서 부식깊이와 브라켓 전단결합강도에 미치는 영향)

  • Previous study had shown the diversities in the propriety for optimal bond strength on the concentration of the etchant. The aim of present study in vitro was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets to enamel and to measure the depth of etch on the phosphoric acid concentrations. A hundred and seventy six extracted bovine lower centrals were ground to yield flat surfaces and etched by the concentration $0%,\;5%,\;10%,\;20%,\;30%,\;40%,\;50%,\;60%,\;70%,\;80%\;and\;85\%$ of phosphoric acid respectively during 60 seconds. The shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, the depth of etch and surface roughness of the enamel were measured, and scanning electron microscopic observations on the etched enamel surfaces were carried out. The data obtained from the very experiments were processed and statistically analyzed and evaluated. The gradual increase in the depth of etch to enamel as the accretion of the concentration of the phosphoric acid upto $40-50\%$ and decline henceforth were manifested. The surface roughness showed no correlation with the depth of etch, yet moderate correlation with the shear bond strength of brackets. Scanning electron microscopic investigation revealed that morphological patterns of the etched enamel surfaces for $5\%\;to\;40\%$ of concentrations were even and homogenous, and those for $50\%$ as well as $60\%$ exhibited the overetched and unhomogenous. The shear bond strengths kom $10\%\;to\;60\%$ of concentration showed no statistically significant differences. It was suggested that the shear bond strengths at $5\%\;and\;70\%$ were sufficient to tolerate the force levels of the ordinary orthodontic treatment notwithstanding to be significantly lower than those from $10\%\;to\;60\%$ phosphoric acid solution.

A STUDY ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH AND THE ANTICARIOGENICITY OF GLASS IONOMER CEMENT FOR BRACKET BONDING (브라켓 접착용 글라스 아이어노머 시멘트의 접착강도 및 항우식 효과에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength and the anticariogenicity of glass ionomer cement with conventional bonding resin and fluoride releasing resin. After the shear bond strength test, scanning electron microscopic observation was performed for the evaluation of the fracture patterns in each group. Under the polarizing light microscope, artificially induced carious lesions were evaluated and the lesion depths of the samples were measured using image analyzing program(Image-Pro $PLUS^{TM}$, USA). 50 sound maxillary premolars were used for the bond strength test and another 30 for the anticariogenic test. Data collected were analyzed statistically using Oneway-ANOVA and Scheffe test. The results were as follows: 1. Glass ionomer groups(G-III, IV, V) generally showed the lower bond strength values than resin groups(G-I, II). 2. Among the two resin groups, G-I showed the higher bond strength than G-II without statistically significant difference between them(p>.05). 3. Within glass ionomer groups, statistical significance was found between G-III and G-V with the superior bond strength in G-V (p<.05). 4. Under the SEM, adhesive failure was the predominant fracture pattern in G-I and II, whereas cohesive failures were mainly observed in G-III. In G-IV and V, mixed type of pattern where the both fracture patterns coexisted within samples could be seen. 5. In evaluation of the depth of artificially developed carious lesion, glass ionomer group showed shallower depth than resin groups with statistical significance between G-III and G-I, II(p<.05). Among resin groups, fluoride releasing resin(G-II) showed the shallower depth than conventional resin(G-I)(p<.05).

Effect of Various Surface Treatment Methods on Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets to Aged Composite Resin (시효된 복합레진 표면에 다양한 표면 처리 후 부착한 교정용 브라켓의 전단응력)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of various surface treatment methods on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets in vitro. Ninety six specimens, 6 mm in diameter and 5 mm in height, were made with composite resin ($Filtek^{TM}$ Z350 XT, 3M ESPE, USA) and treated with an aging procedure. After aging, the specimens were randomly separated in six groups: (1) control with no surface treatment, (2) 37% phosphoric acid gel, (3) 4% hydrofluoric acid gel, (4) sodium bicarbonate particle abrasion, (5) diamond bur, and (6) 1 W carbon dioxide laser for 5s. The metal brackets were bonded to composite surfaces by means of an orthodontic adhesive (Transbond XT, 3M Unitek, USA). Shear bond strength values were evaluated with a universal testing machine (R&B Inc., Korea). Analysis of variance showed a significant difference between the groups. Group 5 had the highest mean shear bond strength (11.9 MPa), followed by group 6 (11.1 MPa). Among the experimental groups, group 2 resulted in the weakest mean shear bond strength (5.22 MPa). The results of this study suggest that the repair shear bond strength of the aged composite resin was acceptable by surface treatment with a carbon dioxide laser.
