School lunches serve to improve nutritional status and to promote the health of children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the portion sizes of school lunches served and consumed in Japanese elementary schools. In addition, gender difference in servings and consumption were also studied. A cross-sectional study was undertaken between October 2007 and February 2008 in schools located in Tokyo and Okayama, Japan. A total of 192 fifth-grade children attending four elementary schools participated in this study. Weighed plate waste methods and observation were used to collect dietary data for two non-consecutive days. The proportion of children who chose staple foods along with main dishes and/or side dishes for at least one day was higher in boys than in girls (respectively, for staple food: 42.1% vs. 9.3%, for main dish and/or side dish: 68.4% vs. 44.3%, P < 0.001). The ratio of initial amount served to amount offered was $0.88{\pm}0.11$ for boys and $0.84{\pm}0.10$ for girls (P < 0.05). The ratio of amount consumed to amount offered was $1.04{\pm}0.19$ for boys and $0.88{\pm}0.12$ for girls (P < 0.001). Weight was related to amount consumed both in boys (r = 0.222, P < 0.05) and in girls (r = 0.201, P < 0.05). These findings suggest that the nutritional standards of school lunch programs should take into account gender differences. Clearly, boys were more likely to consume more than the initial amounts served due to their higher propensity to take second helpings. Boys feel few reservations about taking second helpings to adjust their total intake. However, school lunch plans should take into consideration girls' reluctance to do so, by serving appropriate initial portion sizes.
The study was conducted to assess the association or physical activity, television watching and energy intake with body fat in 514 adolescents(218 boys, 296 girls) aged 14-17 years. Comparison of the weight status evaluated according to some indicators based on weight and stature was made. The quantitative food frequency was used to determine intakes of total energy and energy from each macronutrient. Television-watching time was used as an index of inactivity and time spent performing extra-curricular physical exercise or playing was used a index of activity, BMI(body mass index) was used as index of body fat. Weight status varied by the indicators used. Using BMI, Broca and Rohrer index, 54-59% of boys and 38-57% of girls were underweight decreased(23% of boys and 26% of girls) and the of overweight increased (9.3% of boys and 7.8% girls), when adolescents whose BMI are<=15th percentiles for age and sex, and >= 85th percentiles of standard growth charts of Korean Children and aldosescents(1998) were classified as underweight and overweight, respectively, Girls tended to get fatter compared to boys who showed greater skeletal development. There were no significant correlations between BMI and total energy intake, energy intakes from macronutrient and physical activity level. These lack of association seems to be related to indication that BMI reflects total body mass rather than fatness. Mpreover, the effect of growth may interact with diet intake or physical activity level. Although BMI was not related to physical activity, television-watching time was negatively correlated with physical activity. Television-watching time was positiviely correlated with energy intake in girls. In adolescents, criteria for weigh status based on weight and stature must be age- and sex-specific in that weight status varied by indicators whether gender and higher were taken into consideration or not. If follows that each hourly increment of television watching may be related to fatness of adolescents, because hours certainly reduce the opportunity to be active and increase th energy intake.(Korean J Nutrition 34(1):39-47, 2001)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of middle school students about Home Economics course especially in the area of Food and Nutrition. For this purpose anempirical survey was conducted using structured questionnaire from 482 students in the 2nd grade of middle school. The questionnaire contained questions about the general concept of home Economics course and general concept and the degree of the perceived need of Food and Nutrition part of the course. The data of analysis are frqequency percentile mean standard-deviation chi-square one-way ANOVA t-test and Scheff-test. The major findings of this study are as follows. First students show a tendency to perceive Home Economics education is $\ulcorner$related with ethics of human life for both sexes$\lrcorner$which is stronger in girls than in boys. Boys had a tendency to perceive that Home economics is related with $\ulcorner$home making skills in food clothing housings etc.$\lrcorner$or $\ulcorner$for girls and women only $\lrcorner$which is weaker in girls. Second students also show a tendency to perceive Home Economics is important and to agree that Home Economics must be taught to both sexes. This tendency is stronger in girls than in boys, Third students show a tendency to perceive that food and Nutrition part is related with $\ulcorner$meeting problems in food choices and nutrition$\lrcorner$which is stronger in girls than in boys. Fourth girls are more interested in Food and Nutrition part than the other parts and likely to practice what they learned in Food and Nutrition part of their 1st grade and became to pay attention to their eating patterns. These tendencies are weaker in boys.
The purpose of this study was to obtain basic data for nutrition education of the children in a health promoting elementry school. The data was collected by a questionaire of food habits, and anthropometric measurement and biochemical test in comparison with obesity index. The study subjects were boys and girls aged 10 to 12 years who participated in the “99 Children Nutrition Camp”. The average obesity index was 1.7$\pm$21.6% in boys and -11.4$\pm$12.6% in girls. After school, major leisure items were significnatly different by gender but both boys and girls played mainly computer game. In concern for body image and eating habits, girls had more concern and girls had attempted weight control more than boys. 80.2% of subjects had prejudice for special food, especially, all subjects in the severely underweight group had prejudice. But this tendency was significantly decreased with the increasing obesity index. The lowest preferency was for vegetables(64.4%). The tendency of prejudice of subjects was higher whose mother are thirties than those of subjects whose mother are in fourties. The serum GOT and GPT values were significantly higher in overweight and obese group than the other groups. The only serum T-chol was significantly higher in boys than in girls. The number of risk factors related to coronary heart disease(CHD) based on coresponding criteria of TG, T-chol, HDL-chol, and LDL-chol was not increased significantly with the degree of obesity index. The results indicated the need of nutritional management for the children. At a point of view, to educate children early who are able to change food habits and life-styles means to help heathy growth and to deliver up heathy adults. Active nutrition education for both children and mothers will be recommended with joint participation of nutritionists in community public health center and elementary school.

This study was to investigate the body perception and dietary attitude of adolescents in relation to self-esteem. Total of 1,030 middle school students in Bucheon were participated. Data were collected from July 14 to 21, 2008. by questionnaire, and analyzed by the SPSS V. 12.0 program. The research findings were summarized as that there was considerable mismatch between perceived body shapes and actual obesity status of the subjects, 52% of the boys, 36% of the girls, and 43% of the total participants, which indicated that perception of own body shapes was distorted. The girls and obese group tended to be more unsatisfied with their body weights than boys and underweight group, respectively. The dietary attitude scores were higher in boys than girls in all obesity groups, with the obese girls the lowest score. There were differences in self-esteem scores among the obesity groups with the underweight group the highest and the obese group the lowest. Self-esteem scores of boys were higher than girls in all 4 obesity groups. The body perception and dietary attitude were correlated with self-esteem in both boys and girls. It is shown that the more negative perception on their body shape, and the worse dietary attitude they had, the lower self-esteem both the boys and girls had.
The purpose of this study was to examine preschool children's participation tendency and use of play materials in imaginative play. The subjects for the study included 22 boys and girls in nursery school. These children were observed for 110-3-minutes of play behavior during free play at nursery school, especially in block area and housekeeping area. The results obtained from the study were as follows. 1. There was a significant association between paricipation tendency in imaginative play and age or sex, Boys engaged in more social imaginative play than girls, and four-year-olds engaged in more social imaginative play than three-year-olds. 2. There was sex difference in the content of imaginative play and use of play materials. That is, boys usually chose masculine kinds of toys such as block, cars, trucks, and manipulative materials. And the boys' common fantasies were about car, robert and fighting. Girls usually chose play dough, kitchen sets, and blocks and there were maines stories of family life and cooking. 3. Children preferred to use more realistic toys in imaginative plays and there were few cases of imaginative plays with no materials.
Child's temperament, cognitive ability, social competence, mother's affective child rearing and positive expression, father's positive expression, and teacher's positive expression were the variables investigated in relation to the structure of children's emotional competence (EC). Subjects were 20 teachers and 236 five-year-old children and their parents. Data were analyzed by LISREL (Linear Structural Relations), a statistical program for structural equation modeling. Results showed that boys' social competence and mother's affective rearing behavior directly influenced the EC of boys; boys temperament and cognitive ability, and positive expressions of their teachers indirectly influenced the EC of boys. Girls' temperament and social competence directly influenced the EC of girls; their cognitive ability, mother's affective child rearing behavior, and positive expressions of mothers and fathers indirectly influenced the EC of girls.
This study examined the developmental trajectories of perceived level of stress and depression in Korean youth using longitudinal data from the Korean Youth Panel Study (KYPS) of 2,844youth (1,524 boys) across $4^{th}$ grade through $8^{th}$ grade. Latent growth modeling indicated the presence of age-related, significant increases in stress and depression for both boys and girls. Girls experienced greater in stress and depression than did boys. Multiple group analysis indicated that there was no significant sex difference in effects of stress on depression. Overall, increases in stress were associated with increases in depression levels for both boys and girls. Conceptual and clinical implications of the findings were discussed.
Participants in this study on links between toddlers' compliance and variables were 97 toddlers and their mothers. Instruments were the Toddler Behavior Assessment Questionnaire (Goldsmith, 1988) and the Child Rearing Practice Report-Q Sort (Block, 1981). Toddlers' compliance was observed on clean-up and behavior-delay tasks. Data analysis was by logistic and regression analyses. Results on the clean-up task indicated lower compliance by difficult children and higher compliance by girls. On the behavior-delay task, boys with less difficult temperament showed higher compliance by mother's higher punishment attitudes, whereas highly difficult boys were more compliant by mother's lower punishment attitudes. Girls' compliance was higher than boys in the low inhibition group whereas boys' compliance was higher than girls in the high inhibition group.
The effects of material monitoring and information sources of maternal knowledge on externalizing and internalizing behaviors of adolescents were examined with a sample of 323 ninth-grade middle school students(163 boys and 160 girls) and their mothers. Data were collected using questionnaires regarding maternal monitoring, information sources of maternal knowledge, and externalizing and internalizing behaviors of adolescents. The major findings were that 1) unemployed mothers showed more monitoring than employed mothers; 2) mothers perceived that girls showed more self-disclosure and were more controlled by them than boys; 3) girls showed more internalizing behavior than boys; 4) the more adolescents were monitored by their mothers, the less internalizing behavior they showed; 5) the more maternal solicitation was used, the more externalizing behavior girls showed; 6) adolescents showed the least externalizing behavior when maternal monitoring was highly perceived by both mothers and adolescents. And perception of maternal monitoring by adolescents themselves plays an important role in showing less externalizing behavior.
