Placement and Performance Analysis of I/O Resources for Torus Multicomputer (토러스 다중컴퓨터를 위한 입출력 자원의 배치와 성능 분석)

  • Performance bottleneck of parallel computer systems has mostly been I/O devices because of disparity between processor speed and I/O speed. Therefore I/O node placement strategy is required such that it can minimize the number of I/O nodes, I/O access time and I/O traffic in an interconnection network. In this paper, we propose an optimal distance-k embedding algorithm, and analyze its effect on system performance when this algorithm is applied to n x n torus architecture. We prove this algorithm is an efficient I/O node placement using software simulation. I/O node placement using the proposed algorithm shows the highest performance among other I/O node placements in all cases. It is because locations of I/O nodes are uniformly distributed in the whole network, resulting in reduced traffic in the intE'rconnection network.

  • Tool shop of the‘D’Motor Co.(DMC) fabricates dies for producing automotive press panels. In order to increase the production capacity of the tool shop, DMC established an FMS that consists of high-speed machines and a CMM at the tool shop in 1997. Due to the difference in machine capability among the existing machines and the new FMS it is needed to find an optimal way of allocating workloads among machines to maximize the production. In a way to solve this, we model the die fabrication process of the tool shop and analyze its performance by computer simulation. In this study, we at first identify the bottleneck processes of the die fabrication process under the current operation policy. Then, we derive some alternative operating policies applicable to the tool shop, and analyze the optimal operation policy by comparing the performance of the tool shop following each alternative policy.

  • This research has been conducted in order to assess the effects on quality management factor of the construction sites. 30 companies abiding by the 'construction industry law' and 32 companies abiding by the 'housing construction promotion law' have been researched in areas of quality-management environment, quality-management understanding, quality-management education on construction field, quality-system and quality-improvement. This construction quality factors are to realized the anticipated results not only quality level's increasing, but also company's confidence, competitiveness. We were able to obtain participations of 62 questionnaire, and derived statistics by means of SPSS/PC version 10.0. In this study, we find the bottleneck factor for promotion and upgrade quality management factor of the construction sites and suggest a way out of difficulties.

  • The headway in Korean national railway normally runs from 6 to 10 minutes. It turns out that the current signal system can not decrease the running headway of the High Speed trains, which are scheduled to set out in April, 2004, between Seoul and Daejeon, since both the existing classical trains and the High Speed ones run on the section. Thus, a new signal system is to be introduced to secure safe and reduced headway. The present paper attempts to analyze the headway between this particular section Seoul-Daejeon of the classical line, where we expect the most severe bottleneck situation to occur. We employed two modes in our analysis : the Ground Signal mode and the On-board Signal mode. which are to be adopted starting from 2006.

  • In this paper, We analyze a capacity dimensioning and performance of the access line to the X.25 packet network when the AO/DI internet service is connected via D-channel. We show the forecasting methodology of the traffic demand of the D-channel internet services when the TDX-1OA switching system accommodates the target number of subscriber. Based on the traffic demand forecast, the required capacity of the access line is suggested to prevent bottleneck problem in the access line to the X.25 packet network.

  • In this paper, we propose a multimedia hardware architecture for desktop video-conferencing in view of the multimedia data flow and analyze system operation using queueing model. We analyze the bottleneck of multimedia data flow for video- conferencing by simulation, varying the video size, frame rate, the number of participants, and video data compression rate, And we also implement and test the archiecture, that almost includes the analyzed requirements for video-conferencing, to confirm the simulation results. This paper describes the considerations in designing a multimedia I/O system.

  • The present headway on KNR(Korea National Railway) lines varies from 6 to 10 minutes depending on the each line and by the operation of High Speed line in 2004, the bottleneck would be expected within a few sections such as Daejeon-Daejeon shunting yard which will be the common mute between KTX(Korea Train Express) and conventional trains. Therefore, KNR would like to reduce the headway of the all lines by 4 minutes with the implementation of ERTMS/ETCS on-board system. Where ETCS(European Train Control system), the subsystem of ERTMS, is Automatic Train Protection system for safety train running. This study will be analyze expected braking distance and running time depending on characteristics of conventional passenger and freight trains and high speed train will be operated within electrified conventional line for comparing the headways of ATS(Automatic Train Stop) system and ETRMS/ETCS system within the Daejeon-Daejeon shunting yard section.

Structure Based Protein Engineering of Aldehyde Dehydrogenase from Azospirillum brasilense to Enhance Enzyme Activity against Unnatural 3-Hydroxypropionaldehyde

  • 3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) is a platform chemical and can be converted into other valuable C3-based chemicals. Because a large amount of glycerol is produced as a by-product in the biodiesel industry, glycerol is an attractive carbon source in the biological production of 3HP. Although eight 3HP-producing aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) have been reported so far, the low conversion rate from 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3HPA) to 3HP using these enzymes is still a bottleneck for the production of 3HP. In this study, we elucidated the substrate binding modes of the eight 3HP-producing ALDHs through bioinformatic and structural analysis of these enzymes and selected protein engineering targets for developing enzymes with enhanced enzymatic activity against 3HPA. Among ten AbKGSADH variants we tested, three variants with replacement at the Arg281 site of AbKGSADH showed enhanced enzymatic activities. In particular, the AbKGSADHR281Y variant exhibited improved catalytic efficiency by 2.5-fold compared with the wild type.

Scalable Big Data Pipeline for Video Stream Analytics Over Commodity Hardware

  • A huge amount of data in the form of videos and images is being produced owning to advancements in sensor technology. Use of low performance commodity hardware coupled with resource heavy image processing and analyzing approaches to infer and extract actionable insights from this data poses a bottleneck for timely decision making. Current approach of GPU assisted and cloud-based architecture video analysis techniques give significant performance gain, but its usage is constrained by financial considerations and extremely complex architecture level details. In this paper we propose a data pipeline system that uses open-source tools such as Apache Spark, Kafka and OpenCV running over commodity hardware for video stream processing and image processing in a distributed environment. Experimental results show that our proposed approach eliminates the need of GPU based hardware and cloud computing infrastructure to achieve efficient video steam processing for face detection with increased throughput, scalability and better performance.
