  • Two newly recorded carnivorous amphipod species, Anonyx gurjanovai Steele, 1986 and A. nugax (Phipps, 1774) belonging to the family Uristidae Hurley, 1963, were collected from the East Sea, Korea. Anonyx gurjanovai is included in the A. laticoxae group and is characterized by a concave palm of the propodus in gnathopod 1 and small posteroventral projection at epimeron 3. The other species, A. nugax, represents the A. nugax group and is distinguished from congeneric species based on the presence of a shorter and less acute projection on epimeron 3. There are 13 species of the A. nugax group recorded worldwide, but this is the first report on the presence of the A. nugax group in Korean waters. Previously, three species of the genus Anonyx had been reported in Korea, and through this study, we have added two newly recorded species. Both the newly recorded Anonyx species are illustrated and compared with the related species. A key to the Anonyx species in Korea is also provided.

  • Date palm leaflets were used as a precursor to prepare dehydrated carbon (DC) via phosphoric acid treatment at 150℃. DC, acidified with H3PO4, was converted to activated carbon (AC) at 500℃ under a nitrogen atmosphere. DC shows very low surface area (6.1 m2/g) while AC possesses very high surface area (829 m2/g). The removal of lisinopril (LIS) and chlorpheniramine (CP) from an aqueous solution was tested at different pH, contact time, concentration, and temperature on both carbons. The optimal initial pH for LIS removal was 4.0 and 5.0 for DC and AC, respectively. However, for CP, initial pH 9.0 showed maximum adsorption on both carbons. Adsorption kinetics showed faster removal on AC than DC with adsorption data closely following the pseudo second order kinetic model. Adsorption increases with temperature (25℃–45℃) and activation energy (Ea) is in a range of 19–25 kJ mol/L. Equilibrium studies show higher adsorption on AC than DC. Thermodynamic parameters show that drug removal is endothermic and spontaneous with physical adsorption dominating the adsorption process. Column adsorption data show good fitting to the Thomas model. Despite its very low surface area, DC shows ~70% of AC drug adsorption capacity in addition of being inexpensive and easily prepared.

  • Experiments were carried out using granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption techniques to treat wastewater contaminated with organic compounds caused by diverse human activities. Two techniques were assessed: adsorbent GAC prepared from coconut shell (GACC) and adsorbent GAC from palm shell (GACP). A comparison of these two techniques was undertaken to identify ways to improve the efficiency of the treatment process. Analysis of the processed wastewater showed that with GACC the removal efficiency of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS) was 65, 60, 82, 82 and 8.7%, respectively, while in the case of GACP, the removal efficiency was 55, 60, 81, 91 and 22%, respectively. It can therefore be concluded that GACC is more effective than GACP for BOD removal, while GACP is better than GACC for TSS and TDS removal. It was also found that for COD and turbidity almost the same results were achieved by the two techniques. In addition, it was observed that both GACC and GACP reduced pH value to 7.9 after 24 hrs. Moreover, the optimal time period for removal of BOD and TDS was 1 hr and 3 hrs, respectively, for both techniques.

  • Purpose: We investigate to evaluate the effects of scapular stabilization exercise on dynamic standing balance in stroke patients. Methods: Thirty hemiplegic patients participated was divided into control group and training group randomly. Control group(n=15) had only general rehabilitation training and training group (n=15) had both the general rehabilitation training and intensive scapular stabilization exercise. They were treated for 15minute/5 times/4 week. We measured PALM (palpation meter) to measure affected side's distances from spine to scapular. We measured FRT (functional reach test), FSST (four squared step test), and BPM (balance performance monitering) to evaluate dynamic standing balance. Results: Training group showed a significant difference in the distances from spine to scapular, FRT, FSST, and variables of BPM comparing control group (p<0.05). But control group was not significant difference. Conclusion: These results suggest that scapular stabilization exercises have positive effects on dynamic standing position.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate problems with both fit and abrasion of golf gloves through a survey of golf usage among golfers over the age of 30, as well as by analyzing the golf glove industry with an emphasis on the size system and marketing situation. In addition, this study aims to suggest the basic raw materials for improving the design of golf gloves through physical properties inspections. The results of the analyses support the following suggestions. First of all, dissatisfaction arose from improper measurement in glove length. The survey showed that most problems occur in the pinky finger, while only the length of the middle finger of the glove is recorded based on Korean Standard Anthropometries Measurement. Clearly, proper measurements of every finger need to be included in the system. Secondly, the survey results clearly indicated regions 7(palm area) and 3(second finger area) as the areas requiring reinforcement. While the method of patching another layer with the same material is commonly used in the current glove market, materials other than genuine leather are unable to complement the abrasion. This study suggests that another layer of refill type genuine leather, which scored best in the physical properties inspection, needs to be patched onto regions 7 and 3.

  • This study was performed to measure the various dimensions of the hand for Korean adults. Three hundred and eighteen males and two hundred and sixty females, age ranged 18 to 60, participated in this study. Thirty-five dimensions were selected to measure. Subjects were divided into three age groups, 18 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 to 60, for each sex. The data were analyzed to see the differences between the age groups and sex by using SAS program. The results showed that the measurements related to breadth and thickness tended to increase as the age increased. Wrist breadth, index finger breadth(distal), index finger breadth(proximal), thumb breadth, and index finger thickness(proximal) increased as the age increased for both males and females (p<0.05). However, the measurements related to length tended to increase as the age decreased. The relationship between the parts that are length related showed high correlation. Hand length showed high correlation with palm length, middle finger length and index finger length. Males' were significantly greater than females' in every dimension (p<0.05). Also, the results of this study were compared with the data of Japanese and U.S. army. The results of this study can be used to design the hand related products.

  • 'Pattern' is of very unique nature in each and every country around the world, and its aesthetic feeling of 'pattern' has been handed down according to its nationality and cultural development process. That is, 'pattern' is ornament to symbolize each country's aesthetic standard or choice through some shape, reflecting social consciousness or religion philosophy. Mostly based upon literature survey and case study, this survey paper analytically compares oriental botanical pattern with occidental botanical figure, which has been influenced by Buddhism-Confucianism and Christian religion respectively. The results show that some patterns are commonly used in both area, while meaning differently in some cases: lotus (life), pomegranate (wealth and prosperity in orient, resurrection in occident), grape (fecundity in orient, wealth in occident), dangcho (fecundity in orient, victory in occident). And the other patterns look uniquely used either just in orient or only in occident. For instance, oriental area had its own patterns such as peony (meaning wealth and honour), peach (longevity), ume flower (happiness), orchid (fecundity); while occidental area used lily (purity), olive (peace), palm (victory), and so on. Interestingly, the botanical patterns were used as main patterns in orient whereas as minor in occident.

  • Anti-shock performance is one of the most important design specifications of TFT-LCD modules. Since they are adopted fur major display units of many mobile applications such as lap-top PCs, cellular phones, and palm pilots, they are able to accommodate and endure high level transient mechanical energy inputs. For the reasons, not only the LCD unit manufacturers but their customers like PC makers perform a series of strict impact/drop test on the units. Currently, designers are mostly relying on their own trial-error based experience for the anti-shock design. Thus those designs depending on only experience may result in disqualification from the drop/impact test during final product evaluation. Those shock failures of any new designs are prohibitive for both LCD and PC manufacturers. In order to avoid this problem, many designers are focusing on the development of computer-aided design tools that is directly connected to shock simulation capabilities and then shock-proof design cycle time could be significantly reduced. Development of an integrated CAE system for the shock-proof design is presented in this article. At every stages of the development of present work, practical industrial applicability and mass production feasibility are seriously considered and tested so that the system is to be used in the LCD design engineering field.
