  • This study was conducted to find out the changes of the botanical composition, ecological behaviour and forage value of vegetation in abandoned hilly pasture, in Yeoju, Kyonggi Province from April, 1993 to October, 1996. This experiment was arranged as a vegetation survey(Pflanzenaufnahme) with two different pastures ((1) with forkcrane planed pasture and (2) forest pasture). After the abandoned management of pasture, wild grasses and shrubs of the botanical composition were gradually increased and pasture plants tended to decrease rapidly in the two different hilly pasture. In abandoned management of planed and forest pasture, moisture figure, reaction figure and nitrogen figure of the ecological behaviour were greatly decreased and also the forage value of standing crop was greatly decreased in three years (from 7.06 to 4.60 in planed pasture and from 6.81 to 4.38 in forest pasture). After abandon of two different hilly pastures, fresh weight of standing crops in flowering stage was greatly decreased 48.5~54.1% in three years than that of the vegetation at the pasture management.

  • This study was conducted to find out the vegetational succession in abandoned hilly pasture, in Yeoju, Kyonggi Province from April, 1993 to October, 1996. The experiment was arranged as vegetation survey (Pflanzenaufuahme) with two different pastures((1) with forkcrane planed pasture and (2) forest pasture). After the abandoned management of pasture, the botanical composition of planed pasture and forest pasture was greatly changed into the type of natural vegetation in the first year and in the second years, respectively. The biomass of life forms of hemicryptophytes, geophytes and chamaephytes was greatly decreased, on the other hand, that of therophytes and nanophanerophytes after abandoned management of planed and forest pasture in three years was slightly increased than those of the vegetation with pasture management. The similarity coefficients among vegetation groups during the survey were greatly affected by botanical composition. The clustering analysis was showed that the communities of relatively similar botanical composition were grouped closely, and the other communities were clustered farther to the same group although the degree of similarity between communities was low. The communities of hilly pasture after abandoned management were gradually successive into the type of natural grassland or forest community in three years.

  • Pasture composition, an important attribute determining sward condition and value, is normally assessed by hand separation, drying and measuring weight contribution of each species in the mixture. This is a tedious, time and labour consuming procedure. NIRS has demonstrated the potential for predicting botanical composition of swards, but most of the work has been carried out on dry samples. The aim of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of developing NIR models for predicting the white clover and ryegrass content in fresh or dry mixtures artificially prepared from pure samples of both species. Mixtures from pure stands of white clover(Trifolium repens) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were prepared with different proportions (0 to 100%) of each species (fresh weight). A total of 55 samples were made (11 mixtures,5 cuts). Spectra (400 to 2500 nm) were taken from fresh chopped (rectangular cuvettes, transport sample module) samples, in a NIR Systems 6500 scanning monochromator controlled by the software NIRS 3 (Infrasoft International), which was also utilized for calibration development. Different math treatments (derivative order, subtraction gap and smooth segment) and a scatter correction treatment of the spectra (SNV and Detrend) were tested. Equations were developed by modified partial least squares. Prediction accuracy evaluated by cross-validation, showed that percentage of clover or ryegrass, as contribution in dry weight, can be successfully percentage of clover or ryegrass, as contribution in dry weight, can be successfully predicted either on fresh or dried samples, with equations developed by different math treatments. Best equations for fresh samples were developed including a first, second, or third derivative, whereas for dry samples best equations included a second or third derivative. Standard errors of ross validation were about 6% for fresh and 3.6% for dry samples, Coefficient of determination of cross validation (1-VR) were over 0.95 times the value of SECV for fresh samples and over 8 times the value of SECV for dry samples. Scatter correction (SNV and Detrend) in general improved prediction accuracy. It is concluded more precise on dried and ground samples, it can be used with an acceptable error level and less time and labour, on fresh samples.

  • A study was conducted to determine the effects of seed mixture and nitrogen application levels on botanical composition and forage productivity in grazing pasture. Legume forage have the ability to take nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into a form usable by plants. Including legumes in mixtures with grass lowers the amount of nitrogen fertilizer required to produce forages. Dry matter (DM) yield of grass-legume mixtures was more than that of grass mono-cultivated and grass+white clover+red clover mixtures was the highest as 17,391 kg/ha in legume mixture (P<0.01). The highest DM yield was in N-200 kg/ha, but it was similar between N-100 kg/ha(15,128) and N-200 kg/ha (16,017). The large decline in the proportion of grass during April to June in 2004 probably was due to the drought and summer depression in grass-legume mixtures. Grass proportions decreased by 8.2% after 2 year, and white clover was dominated in grass-white clover mixture by May 2005. Crud protein (CP) content tends to increase with increased nitrogen application level.

  • To find out the residual effect of phosphate fertilization on botanical composition, mineral contents and mineral nutrient deprivation of pasture plants, this experiment was arranged as a randomized complete block design with six treatments(0-0, 50-50, 100-65, 150-65, 200-65 and 250-65kg $P_2O_5$/ha), those were composed of three P,O, fertilization level(0, 50 and 65kg P,OJha) after phosphate fertilization trial with six treatments(0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250kg $P_2O_5$/ha) from 1989 to 1992, and conducted at hilly land in Kwangju, Kyonggi Province 60m 1993 to 1994. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The botanical composition of pasture plants without phosphate fertilization was very poor. With increasing available phosphate of soil, the percentage of grasses and legumes were remarkably increased and weeds was decreased. With 150-65kg $P_2O_5$/ha application for two years, the average DM yield was composed of 80.6% grasses, 15.4% legume and 4.0% weeds, the percentage was similar to that of 200-65kg $P_2O_5$/ha. As available phosphate of soil increase, P, K and Mg content of pasture plants were increased, but Ca/P ratio was lowed and the other mineral contents tended not to be regular. The mineral nutrient contents deprived by DM yield was increased as available phosphate of soil was increased, but those were not different between 150-65 and 250-65kg $P_2O_5$/ha. However, mineral nutrient of $P_2O_5$,$K_2O$ and MgO were higher in 200-65 and 250-65kg $P_2O_5$/ha. Most of applied mineral elements were accumulated at a subsurface(0-2.5cm) of grasslands, and mineral tended to be decrease than that of soil chemical analysis before the experiment of residual effect of phosphate fertilization.

  • This study was carried out in the Chungnam National University grassland experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009 in order to find out the growth characteristics of the wildflowers, the seasonal anthesis distribution of the wildflowers, and the botanical composition of the wildflowers which were altogether composed of 70% sheep fescue and 30% wildflowers. The experimental species contained 34 species in total to which sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass), 4 native wildflowers, and 29 introduced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average length was 29.9 cm one year later and 38.4 cm two years later. They bloomed out into nine colors, but into one or three colors during August, September, and October. The blooming season leant toward May and June and from August there was lots of difficulty in the wildflower blooming and the maintenance of their consistency. Especially, at the age of two (2009) the color, seasonal distribution, and consistency emerged as problems owing to the reduction of annual wildflowers after winterization. The annual ration of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weeds came to 25%, 61%, and 14% each one year later (2008) and 22%, 65%, and 13% each two years later (2009). Based on this result, cultivating wildflower grassland in the ratio of 70% (sheep fescue) to 30% (wildflowers) is the proper method not only for maintaining green space by sheep fescue, but also for commanding a fine view of wild flowers.

  • This study was carried out with aim to find out a tall fescue cultivar which is palatable and resistant to hot climate, and a white clover cultivar which is less competitive with other grasses. Pastures with 3 treatments (TI: Fawn, tall fescue + Regal, white clover + orchardgrass + perennial ryegrass, T2: Roa, tall fescue + Regal, white clover + orchardgrass + perennial ryegrass, T3 : Roa, tall fescue + Tahora, white clover + orchardgrass + perennial ryegrass) were established by oversowing. Under continuous grazing, dry matter yield, soil characteristics, botanical composition and nutrient contents of forages were investigated during the grazing seasons 60m 1994 to 1996. No significant difference were found in establishment percents, physical and chemical characteristics of soil, and nutrient contents of forages between 3 treatments(P>0.05). Dry matter yield of TI, T2 and T3 were 24,188, 23,827 and 23,578kg/ha, respectively. Fawn and Roa, tall fescue cultivars occupied 6.1 and 4.8% of the total plants in 1994, 14.4 and 11.5 % in 1995, and 28.4% and 17.7% in 1996, respectively. These results indicate that Fawn, tall fescue dominantly occupied with time more than Roa, tall fescue. There were no differences in percentage of Regal and Tahora, white clover cultivars(P > 0.05), showing 4.2 and 2.4% in 1994, 16.1 and 17.3% in 1995, and 2.4 and 1.0% in 1996, respectively. The percentage of orchardgrass on mixed pasture decreased after summer season of high temperature, but percentage of Roa, tall fescue slowly increased with time firom 1994 to 1996.

  • Hehage production, botanical composition and soil chemical characteristics were investigated Ween new pastures and old pastures during grazing seasons from May 1993 to October 1994, to find out the condition of pastures grazed by horses on Chdu. Dry matter yields between new pastures and old pastures were 8,757kglha and 7,486kglha respectively. Plant heights of new pastures were 17.4cm. compared with those of old pastures of 12.lcm. The botanical composition of new pastures was composed of grasses about 402, legumes 7~14%, others 18-30% and dead materials 18~ 25%. whiie there were grasses 12%, legumes 3~7%, others 65% and dead materials 15% in old pastures. The contents of crude protein, phosphoms and sodium were lower in old pastures(l3.30, 0.24 and 0.10% respectively) than those in new pastures(l5.47, 0.28 and 0.14% respectively). There was no difference in ADF, NDF, Ca, Mg and K content between the 2 kinds of pastures. The chemical characteristics of the 2 kinds of pastures was shown to be similar, except available phosphorus, comparing 8.18ppm in old pastures with 84.43ppm in new pastures. Although the herbage yield and the soil characteristics of old pastures were lower than those of new pastures, we suppose that the old pastures would be improved, if taken good care of by methods such as oversowing and sometimes applying fertilizer.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the ecological behaviour forage value and similarity among the plant communities of the grazing pasture near Witzenhausen in middle part of Germany. Sixteen plant communities of the different grazing pasture were mostly the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Festuco-Brometea, and those were named the class of plant sociological nomenclature. The ecological behaviour and forage value of the communities except mesobromion(half dry grassland community) were relatively good for forage production. The correlation coefficient between class No. 14 and 12 of plant communities was highest, and the similarity among the communities were greatly affected by botanical composition. The resemblance measure of the cluster-analysis by complete-linkage-method for the similarity among plant communities was better the euclidean distance than those of others. The clustering analysis showed that the communities of relatively similar botanical composition were closely grouped.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the pasture types and the leveling methods of winding slope land for seedbed on the runoff, soil loss, botanical composition, dry matter yield of forage and economical value at the Experimental Field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, Suweon, from 1994 to 1995. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Runoff of the improved land was higher than that of the unimproved land in the top grass and bottom grass. 2. Soil loss of the improved land was higher than that of the unimproved land in the top and bottom grasses in the first year. However, it was slightly higher in the unimproved land, and all of it were greatly decreased in the second year. 3. The percentage of grasses coverage was increased with the improved land in the first year, and it was not different between the improved land and unimproved land in the second year. Also, it was slightly increased in the bottom grasses. 4. Dry matter yield of grasses was increased with improved land at the top and bottom grasses. DM yield of grasses was increased in the top grasses in the first year and bottom grasses in the second year, respectively. 5. The establishment cost of grasses was decreased with wages decrement, and the management cost was saved about 1,116,000 won per ha with improved land. The results demonstrated that although soil loss was increased by leveling methods of improved land irrespective of pasture types in the first year, it was decreased with time little by little. Also, improved land was very good for grasses coverage, dry matter(DM) yield and economical value.
