The member with external unbonded tendon has two remarkable characteristics, i.e., eccentricity variation and slip by friction force at deviators, compared with internal bonded or unbonded member. An efficient numerical procedure for the nonlinear analysis of prestressed concrete beam with external unbonded tendon considering two remarkable characteristics is formulated and corresponding computer code is developed. On the basis of statistical process of parametric study results, strain compatibility method, eccentricity variation predictor and tendon stress predictor at ultimate state are proposed and verified with test results and existing Codes, which can evaluate flexural behavior at ultimate state. Finally, the proposed procedure and predictors can be efficiently used for the realistic and accurate analysis of prestressed concrete members with external unbonded tendons.

Recently, the prestressed unbonded concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the increment of tendon stress was derived by whole member behavior. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to evaluate the flexural behavior and to propose the equation of ultimate tendon stress by performing static flexural test according to span/depth, concrete compression strength, reinforcement ratio and the effect of existing bonded tendon. From experimental results, for cracking, yielding and ultimate load, the effect of reinforcement ratio was more effective than concrete compression strength, and the beams having high strength concrete had a good performance than having low concrete, but there was no difference between high strength and low strength. And as L/dp was larger, test beams had a long region of ductility. This means that unbonded tendon has a large contribution after reinforcement yielding. Especially, the equation of ACI-318 was not match with test results and had no correlations. After analysis of test results, the equation of ultimate unbonded tendon stress without slip was proposed, and the proposed equation was well matched with test results. So the proposed equation in this paper will be a effective basis for the evaluation of unbonded tendons without slip, analysis and design.
Bonded tendons have been used in reactor buildings at some operating nuclear power plants in Korea. Assessing prestress force on these bonded tendons has become an important pending problem in efforts to assure continued operation beyond their design life. The System Identification (SI) technique was thus developed to improve upon the existing indirect assessment technique for bonded tendons. As a first step, this study analyzed the sensitivity of the key parameters to prestress force, and then determined the optimal parameters for the SI technique. A total of six scaled post-tensioned concrete beams with bonded tendons were manufactured. In order to investigate the correlation of the natural frequency and the displacement to prestress force, an impact test, a Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) sine sweep test, and a bending test using an optical fiber sensor and compact displacement transducer were carried out. These tests found that both the natural frequency and the displacement show a good correlation with prestress force and that both parameters are available for the SI technique to predict prestress force. However, displacements by the optical fiber sensor and compact displacement transducer were shown to be more sensitive than the natural frequency to prestress force. Such displacements are more useful than the natural frequency as an input parameter for the SI technique.

The specimen of current study has the same type with the 3-span slabs of Burns et al used in the study by Mojtahedi/Gamble, which laid a ground for the revision of the ACI318-77 code to the ACI 318-83 code. But those specimens was failed prematurely before it reached the ultimate strength which the specimen had. The reason is that bonded reinforcements were cut off where there is no need for the flexural reinforcement. As results. the slabs failed ultimately where the reinforcements was cut off. Thus, the tendon stresses of failure may have been much smaller than the values which culd reach if the bonded reinforcements were extended beyond the theoretical cut off points. On the based on the fact mentioned above. the specimens which had the same conditions as the specimens of Burns et al were used in the current study, but in which the reinforcements were distributed in a sequence for the reinforcements not to be cut anywhere in the 3-span. As a results, it was known that the current ACI code, revised by the result of Mojtahedi/Gamble's study, overestimated the effect of span/depth ratio on the members with high span/depth ratio. Thus it was concluded that the effect of span/depth ratio on the ultimate stress of unbonded tendon regulated by the current ACI code must be reconsidered and reevaluated.
Tendon failures in bonded post-tensioned bridges over the last two decades have motivated ongoing investigations on various aspects of unbonded tendons and their monitoring methods. Recent research shows that change of strain distribution in anchor heads can be useful in detecting wire breakage in unbonded construction. Based on this strain variation, this paper develops a damage detection model that enables an automated tendon monitoring system to identify and locate wire breaks. The first part of this paper presents an experimental program conducted to study the strain variation in anchor heads by generating wire breaks using a mechanical device. The program comprised three sets of tests with fully populated 19-strand anchor head and evaluated the levels of strain variation with number of wire breaks in different strands. The sensitivity of strain variation with wire breaks in circumferential and radial directions of anchor head in addition to the axial direction (parallel to the strand) were investigated and the measured axial strains were found to be the most sensitive. The second part of the paper focuses on formulating the wire breakage detection framework. A finite element model of the anchorage assembly was created to demonstrate the algorithm as well as to investigate the asymmetric strain distribution observed in experimental results. In addition, as almost inevitably encountered during tendon stressing, the effects of differential wedge seating on the proposed model have been analyzed. A sensitivity analysis has been performed at the end to assess the robustness of the model with random measurement errors.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of precast segmental PSC bridge columns. For the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, a computer program named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) is used. To represent the interaction between tendon and concrete of a prestressed concrete member, a bonded or unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method is used. A joint element is modified to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. The solution of the equations of motion is obtained by numerical integration using Hilber-Hughes-Taylor (HHT) algorithm. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic behavior throughout the input ground motions for numerical examples.

Three-dimensional structural analysis system for nuclear containment building is presented in this paper. This system includes high-performance plate/shell elements as finite element library. It also adopts numerical modeling technique for unbonded tendon as well as bonded tendon in prestressed concrete structures. This system is constructed by connecting several in-house program to a commercial program DIANA, and then is capable of performing nonlinear analysis for ultimate pressure capacity of nuclear containment building. Finally, three-dimensional structural analysis of CANDU-type containment building is carried out in order to test the reliability of this system. These numerical results are compared with reference values, which obtained from axisymmetric structural analysis.

The posttensioning system of nuclear containment have to be verified its structural integrity by the periodic inspection because the structural behavior of the containment is changed by the variation of the physical property of concrete and tendon as time passes. In this study a program 'SAPONC-CANDU' which is able to monitor and analysis the micro structural behavior of the domestic CANDU type containment at all times was developed. The readings of vibrating-wire strain gauges embedded into the concrete of containment were used as input data for operating the program. This program provides the long-term prediction values and bands of the concrete strain due to the time dependent factors of the concrete and tendon of the domestic CANDU type containment.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of precast concrete pier cap system. The proposed precast pier cap provides an alternative to current cast-in-place systems, particularly for projects in which a reduced construction time is desired. Five large-scale pier cap specimens were constructed and tested under quasistatic monotonic loading. The computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. A bonded tendon element is used based on the finite element method, and can represent the interaction between the tendon and concrete of a prestressed concrete member. A joint element is used in order to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints with a shear key. This study documents the testing of the precast concrete pier cap system under monotonic loading and presents conclusions and design recommendations based on the experimental and analytical findings. Additional full-scale experimental research is needed to refine and confirm design details, especially for actual detailing employed in the field.
