  • In this work, the effects of binder materials on the tribological behavior were experimentally evaluated for air curable MoS$_2$bonded film lubricants. The binders tested were basically alkyd and acryl based resins, and also were modified by nitro-cellulose in various weight percentages. Effects on the binder ratio to solid lubricants and the molecular weight of binders were also investigated in all aspects of the tribological behavior. For the tests, LFW-1 and Falex tester were used to measure mainly the endurance life and load carrying capacity of bonded lubricants. Results showed that lubricants of methacrylic resin has the better performance than those of other resins, and also the properties of lubricants both of alkyd and acrylic resins could be improved by modification with nitro-cellulose. It was also shown that the optimum ratio of nitro-cellulose related closely to the binder material and the testing machine.

  • In order to enhance the thermal stability of binder materials of bonded type solid lubricants, several metal-alkoxide based sol-gel materials such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMOS), titaniumisopropoxide (Ti(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$), zirconiumisopropoxide (Zr(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$) and aluminumbutoxide (Al(Obu$\^$t/)$_4$) were modified chemically by both epoxy and acrylic silane compounds. Friction and wear characteristics of the bonded solid lubricants, whose binders were of several hybrid ceramic materials, were tested with a reciprocating tribo-tester. Wear life was evaluated with respect to the heat-curing temperature, friction temperature, type of supplement lubricants, and ratio of binder materials. Test results showed that the Si-Zr hybrid ceramic materials modified by epoxy-silane compounds had a higher wear life compared to others. Sb$_2$O$_3$ was the most effective supplement lubricants in the high temperature, and BUS analyses revealed that it was caused mainly by a strong anti-oxidation effect to MoS$_2$ particles. The higher heat-curing temperature resulted in the higher wear life, and the higher friction temperature resulted in the lower wear life.

  • Friction, wear and corrosion characteristics of various MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were investigated to apply them to automotive wheel joints. MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were formulated by combinations of several additives and binders, and they were coated onto the pre-treated surfaces of specimens. Friction and wear characteristics were evaluated with Falex pin & vee-block test and LFW-1 block-on-ring test. For the corrosion resistant characteristics of the films, salt solution spray corrosion tests were performed. Results showed that MoS$_2$ bonded films containing both inorganic and organic corrosion-resistant additives yielded a synergy effect on anti-corrosion resistance. Also, binders having the better water-proof and thermal stability showed the lower friction and higher corrosion resistance.

  • Friction and wear properties of MoS$_2$ bonded films were studied using the Falex testing machine, and their properties were evaluated in terms of the life and the load carrying capacity of the films. MoS$_2$ bonded films were formulated from the mixtures of MoS$_2$ solid particles and epoxyphenol resin, and they were applied onto AISI 4130 steel surface by dipping method to form lubricating bonded films. The results of the life and the load carrying capacity of the films showed that films were mainly affected by the surface temperature arisen from the frictional heat at the contact surface. To obtain enhanced tribological properties of the films, various combinations of solid lubricants and additives with a basic polymer resin were attempted and evaluated. The effects of surface pretreatment, such as sand blast or Zn-phosphating, were also investigated.

  • The tribological behavior for $MoS_2$ bonded films is evaluated according to the international standard testing methods, such as ASTM D 2625 (Falex tester) and ASTM D 2714 (LFW1 tester). It has been well known that the tribological behavior for $MoS_2$ bonded films is affected by several factors. However, in this work, the wear life for $MoS_2$ bonded films is mainly experimentally measured with different contact geometry, and evaluated in terms of the frictional heating according to the contact geometry of tribotester. The test results show that the wear life of $MoS_2$ bonded films is significantly affected not only by the frictional heating, but also by the contact pressure, test running-in conditions, and the contact conformity.

Test results generally showed that hybrid ceramic materials modified by epoxy-silane compounds had a low friction compared to others. And the higher het-curing temperature and the longer heat treatment time resulted in the higher friction and the lower wear. IR spectroscopic analyses revealed that these results were caused mainly by the increased metal oxide content in hybrid ceramics when the heat-curing temperature was over $320^{\circ}C.$

  • MoS$_{2}$ bonded film was applied to reduction gears, and its lubricating properties were experimentally evaluated in terms of the power transmission efficiency and the frictional noise with a dynamo-typed gear test rig. Tests were performed in both oil lubrication and dry condition where the rotating velocity and loading torque were varied. In dry condition, MoS$_{2}$ bonded films effected the power transmission efficiency to increase about 5%, and the frictional noise level to decrease about 6 dB under the test operating conditions. It well proved that MoS$_{2}$ bonded films were a very effective solid lubricant for reduction gears. In oil lubricating conditions, the frictional properties of the coated gears were mainly governed by the lubricating oil, and lubricating effects of MoS2 bonded films were not evident. The result suggested that lubricating effect of MoS$_{2}$ bonded films would be limited to prevent a damage of reduction gears in the initial run when they were used in oil lubrication conditions.

  • Three kinds of reation-bonded SiC that reaction-bonded SiC(RBSC), RBSC reinforced by carbon fiber and RBSC reinforced by activated carbon fiber were prepared for investigating the change of erosion properties. The characteristics of microstructures and the phases have been investigated by using scanning electron microscope and XRD analysis. The hardness test toughness test and erosion test was carried out. In the cases with no carbon fiber, those kind of specimens had the highest value of hardness and the lowest value of toughness. With the increase of carbon fiber content the hardness and the weight loss were decreased, but the toughness was increased in the cases with carbon fiber. In the cases with activated carbon fiber specimens had the highest value of toughness and the lowest value of hardness with 30% contents of activated carbon fiber.

  • The effect of $MoS_2$ and graphite content on wear resistance and mechanical properties of Cu/Sn bonded diamond micro blades was comparatively investigated in terms of volume and weight fraction. For the evaluation of endurance and cutting performance, instantaneous electric power consumption and cumulative wear loss during cutting glass work piece at constant velocity were measured with the micro blades of the wide range of lubricant content. The energy consumption of blades for glass cutting decreased with the content of lubricants. Wear amount of blade in volume increased with the amount of lubricant addition. It was found to be relevant to the decrease in flexural strength and hardness with the amount of lubricants. With the same amount of lubricant content in volume fraction $MoS_2$ showed superiority in mechanical properties and cutting performance than graphite while graphite could result in stronger effect on lowering electric consumption during cutting work piece for the same weight percent fraction than $MoS_2$ because of lower density.
