  • A reliable and practical finite element modeling technique to estimate the behavior of complex structures with bolted joints is important for engineeres in the industry. Accordingly, we have examined several simplified modeling techinques which do not require the use of special elements such as a gap eloement. The dynamic and static erxperiments have confirmed that the technique to model the bolted joints with eight-noded three dimensional elemnts which fill the bolt space gdives most satisfactory results.

  • Anti-theft safety caps for bolted joints are necessary to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent theft of manholes, bridge guardrails, bulletin boards, subway safety handrails and others. Safety caps enhance the look of bolted joints, avert accidents that involve hitting the head of bolts, hamper them from coming loose by covering the head of bolts. This study focuses on press die design methods and press molding condition setting to resolve bursting and cracks in products, and on molding material selection and heat treatment technologies to boost life extension.

  • This study presents a structural health monitoring (SHM) method for bolted connections by using multi-channel wireless impedance sensor nodes and multiple PZT-interfaces. To achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, a PZT-interface is designed to monitor bolt loosening in bolted connection based on variation of electro-mechanical(EM) impedance signatures. Secondly, a wireless impedance sensor node is designed for autonomous, cost-efficient and multi-channel monitoring. For the sensor platform, Imote2 is selected on the basis of its high operating speed, low power requirement and large storage memory. Finally, the performance of the wireless sensor node and the PZT-interfaces is experimentally evaluated for a bolt-connection model Damage monitoring method using root mean square deviation(RMSD) index of EM impedance signatures is utilized to estimate the strength of the bolted joint.

  • In this study, bolted joint made of Glass-Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics (GMT) specimen was under tensile loading to investigate the relation between joint strength and glass-fiber weight fraction of the flat plate specimen. The effect of molding conditions such as the initial size of a GMT charge and molding temperatures was investigated under plane strain condition. In consideration of the specimen geometry, minimum end distance and width of the specimen to induce the bearing fracture mode of the bolted joint were determined. And finally, the effect of the outer diameter of washer and clamping pressure on joint strength was also investigated. Since joint strength is dependent on the local glass-fiber weight fraction, experimentally measured strength was modified, considering its irregular values of the specimen molded under various processing conditions in order to obtain a reasonable correlation between the two.

  • There have been lots of efforts to analyze the dynamic characteristics of mechanical systems. However, it is difficult to know the dynamic characteristics of mechanical systems composed of many parts with joints. Specially, in case of a bolted joint structure, no effective modeling method has been defined to acquire dynamic characteristics of the structure, using the finite element (FE) analysis. In this research, a linear dynamic model is developed for bolted joints and large interfaces using con frusta method and linear spring elements, respectively. The developed modeling method for bolted joints is verified based on the experimental result.

  • To evaluate the shear performance of the textile glass fiber and the sheet glass fiber reinforced glulam bolted connections, a tension type shear test was conducted. The average yield shear strength of the bolted connection of reinforced glulam was increased by 12% ~ 31% compared to the non-reinforced glulam. It was confirmed that the shear performance of 5D end distance of the glass fiber reinforced glulam connection corresponds to that of 7D of the non-reinforced glulam connection proposed in building design requirements in various countries. Compared to the non-reinforced glulam, the average shear strength of textile glass fiber reinforced glulam was markedly increased. The non-reinforced glulam and the GFRP reinforced glulam underwent a momentary splitting fracture. However, the failure mode of textile glass fiber reinforced glulam showed a good ductility.

  • Mechanical joints such as bolted or riveted joints are widely used in mechanical components. The reliable determination of the stress intensity factors for cracks in bolted joints is needed to evaluate the safety and fatigue life of them. The weight function method is an efficient technique to calculate the stress intensity factors for various loading conditions because only the stress analysis of an uncracked model is required. In this paper the mixed-mode stress intensity factors for cracks in bolted joints are obtained by weight function method, in which the coefficients of weight function are determined by finite element analyses for reference loadings. Critical inclined angle that mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum is determined and the effects of crack length and the magnitude of clearance on critical inclined angle are investigated.

  • The dynamic characteristics of mechanical structure are strongly affected by the properties of joint parameters. In this study, the test structures are constructed with two beams which are clamped by bolts, and a bolted joint which is modelled as a lumped stiffness element. To idientify the dynamic joint parameters with variance of clamping torque of bolts, the sensitivity analysis and the mode energy analysis methods are investigated experimentally. As a reult of these two methods, stiffnesses of bolted joint are experimentally found to increase as the clamping torque increases. These stiffnesses identified from the sensitivity analysis and the mode energy analysis method have some difference.
