  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the floor temperature on the human body and to estimate thermal comfort zone in a heated room. In order to evaluate the effects of floor heating, a series of experiments were carried out using Korean subjects. The following experiments were conducted: 1) to obtain the effective radiation area and configuration factors of the person in the sitting posture on a floor to get the mean radiant temperature, 2) to measure contacted area of the person to the floor to calculate conduction heat rate, 3) to measure convective heat transfer coefficient of the body and 4) to know the thermal comfort zone of indoor environment heated by ON-DOL. Subjects were exposed to the following conditions: combinations of air temperature $20^{\circ}C$, $22.5^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and floor temperature $20^{\circ}C$, $22.5^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $27.5^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $32.5^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, $37.5^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$ under still air and 50% relative humidity in the controllable artificial climate chamber. To evaluate the effect of heat conduction between the body and a floor modified mean skin temperature was defined. Weighting coefficient to calculate mean skin temperature were modified with the contacted area. The experiments revealed a positive correlation between the modified operative temperature and the modified mean skin temperature. The modified mean skin temperature can indicate the effect of heat conduction between body and a floor surface.

  • A study was investigated to find out the mechanical optimum conditions of power tiller-plow system on both paddy field and upland. Mathematical model was developed for the theoretical analysis of this system and the experimentation on the field was carried out with two different sizes of 5PS and 8PS power tiller equipped with rubber tire. 1) The relationship between the plowing depth and draft resistance of the power tiller-plow system was a quadratic function. 2) The minimum point of the specific draft resistance of the 5 PS plow was found at the smaller plowing depth than that of 8 PS plow, therefore we can find that the curved surface of 5PS plow bottom should be improved for the effective plowing operation. 3) As the improvement of the mechanical balance by the desirable change of the curved surface of plow bottom, the relative position of hitch point and dimension of plow beam would be realized, the 5 PS power tiller could be used to plow deeply (about 16-17cm). 4) The virtual acting point of the total draft resistance on the plow bottom approached to the land side as the plowing depth increased. 5) The resultant of vertical reaction force $R_2$ on the landside was increased with the plowing depth, while the vertical reaction force $R_1$ on the wheel was decreased as the slope angle of the body of power tiller increased. 6) For the effective plowing operations ; a) The slope angle of the body should be as small as possible. b) The diameter of the wheel should be as small possible. c) The horizontal and vertical distances $l_2, h_1$ between the wheel axis and plow bottom should be as large as possible. 7) To use the 5PS power tiller as the major unit of agricultural machinery, the curved surface of the 5 PS plower bottom and the mechanism of attachment between the power tiller and the plow should be changed as the indications of this study, and in addition to these, the new operation method of the field work should be developed.

  • As wind flows around a sharp-edged body, the resulting separated flow becomes complicated, with multiple separations and reattachments as well as vortex recirculation. This widespread and unpredictable phenomenon has long been studied academically as well as in engineering applications. In this study, the flow characteristics around rectangular prisms with five different aspect ratios were determined through wind tunnel experiments and a detached eddy simulation, that placed the objects in a simulated deep turbulent boundary layer at $Re=4.6{\times}10^4$. A series of rectangular prisms with the same height (h = 80 mm), different longitudinal lengths (l = 0.5h, h, and 2h), or different transverse widths (w = 0.5h, h, and 2h) were employed to observe the effects of the aspect ratio. Furthermore, five wind directions ($0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$) were selected to observe the effects of the wind direction. The simulated results of the surface pressure were compared to the wind tunnel experiment results and the existing results of previous papers. The vortex and spectrum were also analyzed to determine the detailed flow structure around the body. The paper also highlights the pressure distribution around the rectangular prisms with respect to the different aspect ratios. With an increasing transverse width, the surface suction pressure on the top and side surfaces becomes stronger. In addition, depending on the wind direction, the pressure coefficient experiences a large variation and can even change from a negative to a positive value on the side surface of the cube model.

  • The weld pool convection problem that occurs during the stationary GTA welding has been studied, considering the four driving forces for weld pool convection, i.e., the electromagnetic force, the buoyancy force, the aerodynamic drag force, and the surface tension force at the weld pool surface. In the numerical simulation, the difficulties associated with the irregular moving liquid-solid interface have been successfully overcome by adopting a Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. In the experiments to show the validity of the numerical analysis, a deep periphery and shallow centerpentrated weld pool shape was observed from the etched specimen. It could be revealed that this type of weld pool shape could be simulated, only when some of aerodynamic drag force distributions are considered. Although slight disagreement arose, the calculated and the observed weld pool shapes were in a reasonable agreement.

  • In connecting parts of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, since the rubber ring is permeable to hydrogen, it is necessary to use a metal sealing structure which ensures leakage stability. Finite element analysis was performed to verify the fitting characteristics of the metal sealing structure, which is used to connect the pipe to a high pressure hydrogen FCEV tank. Deformation shape, contact distance and axial load were compared experimentally and these values were in agreement with each other. In the contact surface, between the pipe and the fitting body, the stress at the edge of the contact surface was higher than the center point, which was considered to be a good characteristic in view point of the leakage. The location of the contact points has almost no change in the upper part of the fitting, but that of the lower parts move downward as the fastening amount increases. The contact pressure at the lower part is maintained at the same constant level.

  • In recent years, the construction industry has a tendency to increase of high-rise builidngs. High rise buildings can use limited space efficiently. But High rise buildings have problem that have extremely heavy weight. Various studies are being conducted to reduce the weight of buildings. Although lightweight aggregate is a meterial that can effectively reduce the weight of buildings, the strength of the aggregate itself is weak and the absorption rate is high, so the strength of the ITZ(Interfacial Transition Zone) area is weak. Therefore, it is essential to improve the interfacial area when using lightweight aggregates. In this study, an experiment was conducted to improve the adhesion between the aggregate and cement paste and to strengthen the interfacial area by coating the surface of the lighteight aggregate with Blast Furnace Slag. To confirm the improvement, compressive strength and EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) measurements were perfromed. Using EIS, the change in electrical resistance of the cement hardened body was confirmed. As a result, it was confirmed that the lightweight aggregate coated on the surface showed highter compressive strength and electrical resistance than the non-coated lightweight aggregate, and that the coating material was filled in the interfacial area and inside the aggregate that helped to strengthen the compresssive strength and higher electrical resistance.

  • Distraction osteogenesis is a commonly used technique for mandibular lengthening, but changes in the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) have not been well documented. The TMJ is one of the most complex joint in the body and is composed of a fibrous surface layer, a proliferative zone, hypertrophic cartilage, and bone. The shape and role of the TMJ change and modify during a person's life-time. Possible complications that can arise after mandibular distraction include failure of the formation, failure of callus, infection, disturbance of TMJ and of occlusion. However, there are only a few reports on changes in the TMJ as a result of distraction osteogenesis. Hence, the goal of this study was to evaluate the change of the TMJ after experimental distraction of mandibular ramus in rabbit. We studied histological changes of mandibular condyle, articular disk and retrodiscal tissue, and also examined the collagen I gene expression and MMP-1 gene expression. The results were as follows. 1. In the histological staining, experimental condylar surface showed more thick fibrous articular layer and proliferative layer, compared with the control condyle and experimental articular disc showed thick and dense collagen fibers compared with the control disc. 2. In the collagen I and MMP-1 gene RT-PCR analysis, experimental discs showed increased collagen I expression compared with the control disc, while MMP-1 gene expression was decreased compared with the control disc. The retrodiscal tissue was almost equal expressions of the collagen I and MMP-1 genes compared with the control retrodiscal tissue. These findings suggest that histological and biomolecular changes occur in condyles and discs after unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

  • The industry of character toys is increasing and new characters are constantly being developed. However, the development of 2D cover patterns for toys is time-consuming due to frequent pattern modifications made through trial and error. Studies are now underway to obtain 2D clothing patterns from 3D body data, however, little research has been done on 2D pattern of character toys. This study suggests efficient guidelines to develop 2D cover patterns with a reasonable accuracy and processing time. Two 3D models of a dog and rabbit were used to develop 2D cover patterns. Independent variables of this study are set as 3 levels of triangle area (small, medium, and large) that influence the efficacy of 3D and 2D pattern development. The determination of the appropriate triangular area was based on the area and shape change of the 2D pattern. A medium or large triangle area was shown to be suitable for a character dog with a smooth curved surface. However, the appropriate triangle area was small if the characteristics of the curved surface are complicated as in the case of rabbit. The head of a dog (a double-curved surface) and the curved forepaw of a rabbit (a triangular area) should be small when the characteristics of the curved surface (such as the hind leg of a rabbit having a large convex surface and a small surface area) are complicated. Grouping by 3D surface characteristics could be a suitable guideline for the triangle area selection.

  • This study was carried out to determine the influencing of electrical stimulation to cervicothoracic sympathetic ganglion(CTSG; stellate ganglion) u the sympathetic tone. For the purpose of this study. the stimulation was given to both the interferential current stimulation(ICS: AMF 100Hz) group consisting of 10 person(males 8, females 2) and the transcutaneous nerve electrical stimulation(TENS: 100 Hz) group of 10(males 7, females 3) in the right side of the trachea with probe electrodes. Then. the temperature changes on the surfaces of the forehead. cheek, neck and internal ear of cephalocervix, which is subject to the influence of the cervicothoracic sympathetic ganglion, and the palm. which is the end of the upper limbs. measured before. immediately alter. 10 minutes after and 20 minutes after experiment. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The emergence of remarkable Horner's symptoms which appear due to the changes of the tone of cervicothoracic sympathetic ganglion was not seen. However, in the interferential current stimulation group there were two felt the sense of warmth in the facial region and one person who felt it in the upper limbs, and in the transcutaneous nerve electrical stimulation group there was each one person who felt the sense of warmth in the facial region and in the upper limbs, respectively. Both groups have each one person who felt the sense of oppression in the eyelids. Three persons of the interferential current stimulation group and two persons of the transcutaneous nerve electrical stimulation group have the sense of hoarse voice or numbness in the neck. These are the symptoms that appeared during stimulation, so it is difficult for them to be considered as the direct effects of the changes of the tone of cervicothoracic sympathetic ganglion. 2. The t-test was performed to determine the significance between the right, which is the experimental side, and the left, which is the non-experimental side. Significance between the right, which is the experimental side, and the left, which is the non-experimental side. Significant changes were seen in the necks of the interferential current stimulation group and in the cheeks and internal ears of the transcutaneous nerve electrical stimulation immediately after experiment(P<.05). And the interferential current stimulation group showed a very high significance in the cheeks immediately after experiment and in the necks ten minutes after experiment(p<.01). Therefore, it could be seen that the electrical stimulation had an influencing on the changes of body temperature of the cephalocervix. 3. In both the interferential current stimulation group and the transcutaneous nerve electrical stimulation group, the forecheads, checks and necks of the cephalocervix in the experimental side(right) rather than the non-experimental side(left) had mostly a statistically significant rise in temperature immediately after experiment. The one-way ANOVA was carried out to determine the temperature change of on the surface of the body with the lapse of time; before, immediately after, ten minutes after and tewenty minutes after experiment. But no statistical significance was found from both the right and left sides.
