The effect of red pepper powder (RPP) or kimchi on body weight and blood and tissue lipids was evaluated in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high fat diet (HFD). RPP (0.006% capsaicin) diet contained 5% RPP in HFD; the kimchi diet was 10% kimchi (50% RPP by dry weight) in HFD. Food consumption of the RPP and kimchi diet groups was not different than the normal or HFD groups, but final body weights were significantly lower than the HFD group (p <0.05) after 4 weeks on the RPP or kimchi diets. The weights of liver, epididymal fat pad and perirenal fat pad in RPP and kimchi diet groups were lower than those of the HFD group, but the rats on the kimchi diet had even lower weights than those on the RPP diet. Plasma concentrations of triglyceride and cholesterol were lowest in the kimchi diet group (p<0.05). The RPP and kimchi diet groups had lower total lipids, triglycerides and cholesterol in liver; as well as in tissue fat prods than the HFD group, with the greatest effect being in the kimchi diet group. These results suggested that RPP and kimchi consumption can reverse the effects of HFD on weight gain and blood and tissue lipids, and that kimchi does so more effectively than RPP alone.
This study was an attempt to investigate various factions, such as the calorie, nutrient intake, physical activity, blood lipids, obesity prevalence and body fat distribution on NIDDM male diabetics. General characteristics, physical activity and exercise levels of subjects were invesigated by interviewing, daily calorie and nutrient intake were measured by convenient method. The following anthropometric measurements were made on all participats : weight, height. Also waist and hip circumference were measured on 174 male diabetics to get waist-to-hip circumference ratio as index of the body fat distribution. For measurement of plasma lipids, 12-hour fasting blood samples were drawn The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. At the onset of diabetes, the major self-diagnosed symptoms were polydipsia, fatigue, and body weight redution 2. The average of daily energy intake of male diabetics was 2106 Kcal which is 96% of the RDA Percentage of energy is that carbohydrate:protein : pat=70:14:16. 3. Among the NIDDM male subjects, 59% was exercise regularly. 4. Obese subjects above in the ideal body weight of 120% are presently 17%, but 39% of subjects were reported to be obese in the past. The mean BMI of the male NIDDM diabetics is 23.3${\pm}$2.6 and the past mean BMI was 25.2${\pm}$2.7 The mean WHR was 0.93${\pm}$0.10. 5. When diabetics were divided into obese and nonobese group according to RBW, energy intake, blood pressure, blood glucose and total cholesterol were not significantly different between the two groups, but LDL and VLDL-cholesterol were significantly higher in the obese group. 6. RBW did not correlate with cholesterol and triglyceride, but WHR correlated significantly with cholesterol and triglyceride. In conclusion, these results from a present study support previous findings indicating that not only the degree of obesity but also the localization of fat is a risk factor for diabetes.
Many epidemiological and observational studies show that distorted body image of normal body weight is widespread among Korean young females. This study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of overweight and underweight of young females and, to compare nutrient intakes, body composition, serum indices (lipids, MDA: Malondialdehyde, TAS : Total Antioxidant Status) with different BMI groups. The subjects were 75 university students in Seoul. We divided the subjects into 3 groups according to their BMI by IOTF guideline (UW: underweight group, BMI < 18.5, NW: normal body weight group; 18.5 $\leq$ BMI < 23.0, OW: overweight group; BMI $\geq$ 23.0). Data on dietary intakes, body compositions and serum indices were obtained in 3 groups. Differences on all of the above variables were assessed by body weight groups. Using IOTF guidelines, the prevalence of overweight and underweight in young females were 23%, 61%, 16% respectively. $\beta$-carotene and vitamin A intake of UW were significantly higher than that of NW (p < 0.05). Fiber intakes of NW was significantly higher than that of W (p < 0.05). But intakes of energy and the other nutrients were not significantly different among BMI groups. Calcium and folate intakes were 75%, 61% of KDRIs. Serum TGs were significantly higher in OW than that of NW, UW (p < 0.05), but level of MDA and TAS were not significantly different. The association of overweight and low intake of $\beta$-carotene and vitamin A may be one of many factors predisposing obese females to a high risk of oxidative stress later in life. This requires urgent nutritional intervention programs involving enough intake of fruit and vegetables, with modification of inappropriate dietary habits.
Taurine supplementation has been shown to have an effect on lowering blood lipids in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. It therefore seemed desirable to find out whether the beneficial effect of taurine on OVX rats fed calcium-deficient diet could also be reproduced. Forty female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups. One group was OVX and the other group received a sham operation (Sham). Each rat group was further divided into the control diet and the taurine supplemented (2.0g/100g diet) diet group. All rats were fed on calcium-deficient diet and deionized water ad libitum for 6 weeks. Plasma and liver lipids were determined by using commercial kits. LDL-cholesterol concentrations were estimated with the equation of Friedewald et al. (1972). There were no significant differences in body weight gain and food intake between the control and taurine group within Sham and OVX groups, but body weight gain, food intake, and food efficiency ratio was higher in the OVX group. Concentrations of plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol were significantly lower in the taurine fed group of OVX rats fed Ca deficient diet, while HDL-cholesterol concentration was increased in the taurine fed group. Therefore, in this study, we examined whether taurine also prevented hypercholesterolemia induced by ovarian hormone deficiency in ovariectomized rats when they were fed a calcium-deficient diet. These results indicate that taurine may have some beneficial effects on hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia in OVX rats fed calcium-deficient diet.
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between body fat content and serum lipids in college students. A total of 61 (15 males and 46 females) students of W university in Iksan, between June 2015 and July 2015, were enrolled for analysis. The relationship of serum lipid with BMI, and body fat percent measured by impedance fat meter (InBody 520) was analyzed. The study population was divided into three groups according to the InBody 520's guideline. Group I accounted for 26.7% of men and 10.9% of women. Weight and BMI were significantly different among the three groups in men and women (p<0.05); whereas height was not. In men, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and hemoglobin were significantly different between the three groups (p<0.05). Conversely, in women, serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and alanine transferase were significantly different between the three groups (p<0.05). However, there were no differences in other variables between the three groups. BMI was significantly different among three groups in both men and women (p<0.05). In men and women, body fat percent was correlated with BMI, weight, total cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Multiple regression analysis on total cholesterol indicates that body fat percent, BMI, and hemoglobin were not significantly independent variables in men and women. This study showed that body fat percent was significantly associated with other obesity markers and serum lipids.

The effects of aerobic exercises and/or supplementation of kimchi on changes of the body composition and plasma lipids of obese middle school girls were studied. Thirty eight girls, 28 obese girls and 10 normal weighed girls, were paricipated. Among obese girls, 8 were assigned to exercise group (FG) 12 were grouped as kimchi group (KG) , and 8 were asked to practice excercise and to take kimchi simultaneously(excercise kimchi group, EKG). Ten girls whose weight is normal asked to remain o their own diet during 6 weeks of experiment (control group, CG)/ EG practiced jogging and rope-jumping for 60 minutes four times a week and KG took 3 g of freeze-dried kimchi packed in a 500 mg capsule daily which is equivalent to 30 g of fresh kimchi, EKC, EG and KG showed beneficial effects on changes of the body composition and plasma lipids compared to those of CG, EG showed greater effect than KG in reducing body fat resulted decrease in BMI, fat mas,. abdominal fat, and triglyceride concentration and increase in HDL-cholesterol. KG seemed to have greater effect on lowering plasma cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol than EG/ But the greatest effects in terms of reduction in weight, BMI fat mass, abdominal fat, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, and increase in HDL-cholesterol were observed from EKG. These results indicate that kimchi supplemenation while practicing excercise might improve the obese state by reducing body fat content as well as reducing plasma lipids.
The purpose of this research was to measure the effects of a health management program through a school homepage on Obese Female College Students. The subjects were confined to 70 Obese Female College students from S University, located in C area. They voluntarily participated in this study. The subjects were divided into two groups by the BMI (Body Mass Index) classification: overweight or obesity program group(PG, n=35), and overweight or obesity comparative group(CG, n=35). The results obtained are summarized as follows: First, compared with the CG, there was a significant decrease for waist circumference in PG, and a significant decrease for the variables such as fat mass, weight, %fat, and BMI in PG. Second, in the investigation of blood lipids change of PG, there was a significant decrease for TC, TG and HR-rest. On the other hand, there was a significant increase for HDL-C.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an exercise program on physical fitness, obesity indices, and blood lipids in cases of non-obese and obese women. Method: Data was collected from May, 2006 to November, 2006 in a public health center. All Subjects(37 women) participated in an exercise program that consisted of Latin dance, muscular strength training, and dumbbell exercises. Thirty-seven women were divided into two groups(16 non-obese women and 21 obese women) by %body fat. After 8 weeks, the effects of treatment were compared between pre-test and post-test in each group. Results: Physical fitness(abdominal muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, agility, balance) was significantly different between the pre-test and post-test in the non-obese and obese group. Obesity indices(body weight, BMI) was significantly different in obese women after the 8-week exercise program. There was no decrease of blood lipids in either group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that an exercise program could be an effective nursing intervention to increase physical fitness in non-obese and obese women and to decrease obesity indices(body weight, BMI) in obese women.
Purpose: The study investigated the effects of 9 weeks of group music rope-jumping training on health-related physical fitness and blood lipid in obese elementary school boys and girls. Method: Subjects were randomly assigned to either a training group (37 boys and 18 girls) or control group (36 boys and 19 girls). The training group exercised for 1 hour, 2 days per week during the 9-week supervised music rope-jumping training program. The control group was asked to maintain their normal daily physical activities. The effects of the interventions on physical fitness and blood lipids were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA (group ${\times}$ time). Results: There were significant group ${\times}$ time interaction effects on body weight (p<.023), %body fat (p=.09), body mass index (p=.018), and body fat mass (p=.019) in school girls. However, there was not an interaction effect on serum lipids in both genders. Conclusion: The 9-week music rope-jumping training program used was effective for improving body composition in obese elementary school girls.
To investigate the effects of exercise-training on serum lipids, fat distribution and several parameters of body fatness(percent body fat, skinfolds thickness, body circumference) were assessed in 24 healthy male subjects submitted to an 8-wk high intensive exercise-training. Blood sample was taken twice, per and post exercise-training, Exercise-training took place 5 days a week and daily energy intake and expenditure were observed. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Through exercise-training body weight (changes : 1.1$\pm$1.1kg ; p=0.000) and percent body fat (changes : 2.4$\pm$1.3% ; p=0.000) decreased significantly . 2) Suprailiac was the most reduced site by exercise-training among eight site skinfolds. Central skinfolds were changed more by exercise-training than peripheral skinfolds with reduction of 1.7$\pm$1.7mm and 0.2$\pm$1.9mm. Central site circumferences were reduced more by exercise-training than peripheral site circumferences. 3) Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were not significantly changed by exercise-training while only triglyceride decreased (changes : 20.7$\pm$44.8mg/dl ; p<0.05). Changes in body weight were grately related to changes in total cholesterol. Changes in deep abdominal adipose tissue were related to changes in triglyceride.
