  • High insulin level is known to be a risk factor of coronary heart disease. High insulin level with normal glycemic control is known to be an indicator for insulin resistance. This study was aimed to find out the influencing factors for the fasting serum insulin levels in elderly females with normal glycemic control. One hundred thirty-eight older females aged over 60 years without diabetes medication and high blood HBA1c level were examined on the serum fasting insulin concentration, anthropometry and asked about nutrient intake and exercise habits. The elderly were categorized into 3 group according to the fasting insulin level. The high insulin group was in a state of hyperinsulinemia. Except vitamin C, the nutrient intakes showed no difference according to fasting serum insulin level. But the intakes of calorie and protein per kg body weight were significantly lower in the high insulin group. The intakes of most nutrients except vitamin B$_1$, C and niacin were lower than the korean RDA in all the insulin group. Especially, the intakes of vitamin B$_1$ and Ca were below 75% of the korean RDA. Weight, BMI, body fat percent, body fat mass and fat-free mass, circumferences of waist and hip, WHR of elderly females were significantly higher in the group with the highest insulin level. The body fat percent in the highest insulin group was 35.8%. showing a state of obesity. The high insulin group showed higher proportion of low exercise frequencies per week and short exercise duration. Therefore, the mean energy expenditure for exercise were lower in this group, showing a state of very low exercise activity. Age and waist circumference in elderly females could explain to the 14.5% variances of the fasting insulin level according to multiple stepwise regression. It can be concluded that aging and central body fat deposition influence independently the serum fasting insulin level in elderly females with normal glucose level.

  • The main objective was to develop and assess a dynamic fate and transport model for lead in air, soil, sediment, water and vegetation. Daejeon was chosen as the study area for its relatively high contamination and emission levels. The model was assessed by comparing model predictions with measured concentrations in multi-media and atmospheric deposition flux. Given a lead concentration in air, the model could predict the concentrations in water and soil within a factor of five. Sensitivity analysis indicated that effective compartment volumes, rain intensity, scavenging ratio, run off, and foliar uptake were critical to accurate model prediction. Important implications include that restriction of air emission may be necessary in the future to protect the soil quality objective as the contamination level in soil is predicted to steadily increase at the present emission level and that direct discharge of lead into the water body was insignificant as compared to atmospheric deposition fluxes. The results strongly indicated that atmospheric emission governs the quality of the whole environment. Use of the model developed in this study would provide quantitative and integrated understanding of the cross-media characteristics and assessment of the relationships of the contamination levels among the multi-media environment.

  • Biomimetic apatite formation and deposition behaviors of Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V plates in simulated body fluids(SBF) under various conditions were examined. In case of regular samples without collagen treatments the weight gain due to apatite precipitation on the surface in Ti-6Al-4V was found to be higher than in Ti-6Al-7Nb. In case of collagen-coated samples, the weight gain in Ti-6Al-4V continued to be higher than in Ti-6Al-7Nb, but the difference between the two became smaller. Both Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V samples with collagen coating exhibited an appreciable increase of weight gain, which may be caused by the interaction between collagen and $Ca^{+2}$ ions. The weight gain was found to be not much affected by the addition of collagen to SBF. The ill-defined granular structure in the presence of collagen can be associated with the increasing volume fraction of amorphous calcium phosphate.

  • Recently, the scaling of conventional planar NAND flash devices is facing its limits by decreasing numbers of electron stored in the floating gate and increasing difficulties in patterning. Three-dimensional vertical NAND devices have been proposed to overcome these issues. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is the most promising method to deposit charge trap layer of vertical NAND devices, SiN, with excellent quality due to not only its self-limiting growth characteristics but also low process temperature. ALD of silicon nitride were studied using NH3 and silicon chloride precursors, such as SiCl4[1], SiH2Cl2[2], Si2Cl6[3], and Si3Cl8. However, the reaction mechanism of ALD silicon nitride process was rarely reported. In the present study, we used density functional theory (DFT) method to calculate the reaction of silicon chloride precursors with a silicon nitride surface. DFT is a quantum mechanical modeling method to investigate the electronic structure of many-body systems, in particular atoms, molecules, and the condensed phases. The bond dissociation energy of each precursor was calculated and compared with each other. The different reactivities of silicon chlorides precursors were discussed using the calculated results.

  • We conducted a histological analysis to investigate the influence of nutritional changes on melano-macrophages (MMs) accumulation in the kidney of sub-adult rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus). Four experimental groups were established (initial control, control, fed and starved), and fed commercial feed amounting to 1-3% of their body weight for 2 weeks prior to initiation of experiments. Kidney MMs with dark brown pigment were randomly observed in the kidneys of starved fish, increasing rapidly after 4 weeks, while deposition levels remained low throughout the experiment in the control and fed groups. These results suggest that catabolic tissue breakdown is a major factor contributing to the formation of pigments within MMs. Results also suggest that the degree of MMs deposition in the kidney can be used as alternative indicators in identifying starvation in wild and cultured rock bream.

  • To develope a high value-added fiber products which is useful in the human body physiology, the Macban stone was deposited on the PET fabric by sputtering and its effects were investigated. Then, a Macban stone target was prepared for sputtering treatment and treated on the PET fabric by RF sputtering process. After treatment, surface observation by SEM, far-infrared emissivity and emissive power, the fastness to washing and light, bacteriostatic rate, electrostatic, drape stiffness, and breaking strength of PET fabric were investigated. From these investigation, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) The Macban stone was able to deposit on the PET fabric, by the RF sputtering treatment which is eco-friendly dry textile finishing. 2) The far-infrared emissivity and emissive power of sputtered PET fabrics were increased. 3) When PET fabric was treated by sputtering with Macban stone, the amount of deposited Macban stone increased with increasing treatment time and it was deposited on the fabric surface firmly. 4) The bacteriostatic rate of sputtered PET fabrics was about 20%. 5) The electrostatic charge of fiber surface was reduced by sputtering. 6) The fastness washing to light of dyed fabric were improved by the deposition of Macban stone, but the breaking strength was not changed by sputtering. 7) The drape stiffness of sputtered PET fabrics increased with increasing treatment time.

  • Iron has a vital role in the human body, including the central nervous system. Increased deposition of iron in the brain has been reported in aging and important neurodegenerative diseases. Owing to the unique magnetic resonance properties of iron, MRI has great potential for in vivo assessment of iron deposition, distribution, and non-invasive quantification. In this paper, we will review the MRI methods for iron assessment and their changes in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on Alzheimer's disease. In addition, we will summarize the limitations of current approaches and introduce new areas and MRI methods for iron imaging that are expected in the future.

  • Tsaiya ducks and Leghorn hens are the two major laying birds raised in Taiwan. They are all excellent egg layers. Tsaiya ducks are small in body size (1.3 kg) with bigger egg weight (65 g) and stronger eggshell breaking strength than eggs from hens. The eggshell consists mainly of calcium carbonate, hence calcium plays an important role in the eggshell formation. Magnesium is also present in eggshell in small amounts, which may have effect on maintaining eggshell quality. In comparison studies, it was shown that the duck eggshells contained higher calcium and lower magnesium content than chicken eggshells. The eggshell magnesium content was not affected by the dietary magnesium levels (690-2380 ppm) in ducks, but in hens, it increased linearly with dietary magnesium levels. The palisade layer ($5000{\times}$) of the eggshell was found to have a compact form for ducks while there are many hallow vesicles in chicken eggshells. The eggshell magnesium deposition model is different for ducks and hens with ducks having a one-peak and hens having a two-peak model. The calcium deposition model is similar for both birds. Both the carbonic anhydrase specific activity and total activity in the shell gland mucosa of ducks are higher than those in hens. Ducks retain higher magnesium and lower calcium in the shell gland mucosa and secret less magnesium and more calcium into the shell gland lumen for eggshell deposition. The ATPase specific activity is maintained fairly constant during the eggshell forming stage, indicating continuous calcium transport into the shell gland lumen for eggshell formation. The magnesium content in duck eggshells is much lower than that in hens indicating that the magnesium content in the eggshell may have an effect on eggshell quality.

  • Tungsten thin film was deposited on p-(100) silicon substrate by using the LPCVD(low pressure chemical vapor deposition) technique. $WF_6$ was used as a source gas for tungsten and $SiH_4$ was used as a reducing gas for $WF_6$. Tungsten thin film was deposited by either SiH4 or Si substrate reduction of $WF_6$ under cold-wall condition and it was deposited by $SiH_4$ reduction of $WF_6$ under hot-wall condition. The crystal structure of deposited thin film under both conditions were identified to be bcc (body centered cubic). The physical and electrical properties of deposited thin films were investigated. The deposited film under hot-wall condition changed to $WSi_2$ film by the annealing under $800^{\circ}C.$ From the experimental results and theoretical considerations, the change of the crystal structure of the thin film by annealing was discussed. $WSi_2$ thin film, which was known to have good compatibility with Si substrate, could be produced under hot-wall condition although the film properties were superior under cold-wall condition.
