The author analyzes the luminous efficiency of the phosphor-conversion white light-emitting diode (LED) that consists of a blue LED chip and a yellow phosphor. A theoretical model is derived to find the relation between luminous efficiency (LE) of a white LED, wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of a blue LED chip, and the phosphor absorption ratio of blue light. The presented model enables to obtain the theoretical limit of LE and the lower bound of WPE. When the efficiency model is applied to the measured results of a phosphor-conversion white LED, the limit theoretical value of LE is obtained to be 261 lm/W. In addition, for LE of 88 lm/W at 350 mA, the lower bound of WPE in the blue LED chip is found to be ~34%. The phosphor absorption ratio of blue light was found to have an important role in optimizing the luminous efficiency and colorimetric properties of phosphor-conversion white LEDs.
We investigate the temperature dependence of the phosphor conversion efficiency (PCE) of the phosphor material used in a white light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of a blue LED chip and yellow phosphor. The temperature dependence of the wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of the blue LED chip and the PCE of phosphor are separately determined by analyzing the measured spectrum of the white LED sample. As the ambient temperature increases from 20 to $80^{\circ}C$, WPE and PCE decrease by about 4.5% and 6%, respectively, which means that the contribution of the phosphor to the thermal characteristics of white LEDs can be more important than that of the blue LED chip. When PCE is decomposed into the Stokes-shift efficiency and the phosphor quantum efficiency (QE), it is found that the Stokes-shift efficiency is only weakly dependent on temperature, while the QE decreases rapidly with temperature. From 20 to $80^{\circ}C$ the phosphor QE decreases by about 7% while the Stokes-shift efficiency changes by less than 1%.
This study uses neon and xenon gas mixture discharges to determine the effects of the neon plasma emission on the characteristics of visible emission from the stimulation of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers in a surface-type alternate current plasma display panel(AC PDP). With a mixture of less than 2% xenon to neon, it is found that the luminance changes in the visible emission of the phosphor layers are similar to those of the neon plasma emission. In the range of xenon mix ratio from 2 to 5%, the luminance of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers decreases with a decrease in the neon plasma emission intensity. However, with a mixture of above 5% xenon to neon, the luminance of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers increases regardless of a decrease in the neon plasma emission intensity. Furthermore, the color purity of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers improve as the neon plasma emission intensity decreases. Accordingly, it is concluded that the optical properties of the phosphor layers, including color purity and luminance, depend on the neon plasma discharge emission as well as the visible emission from the stimulation of the phosphor layers.

A novel blue emitting $Ca_{1-x}Mg_2Si_3O_9:Eu_x$ phosphor was synthesized by the solid state reaction and its photoluminescence properties were optimized by controlling concentration of the activator contents and substituting concentration of Ca ion by Sr ion. The photoluminescence (PL) showed that this phosphor is efficiently excited by ultraviolet (UV)-visible light in the wavelength range from 200 to 410 nm. Also this phosphor emits intensely blue light with a broad peak at around 450 nm.
We have synthesized a $Eu^{2+}-activated\;Sr_3MgSi_2O_8$ blue phosphor and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4$ yellow phosphor and prepared white LEDs by combining these phosphors with a InGaN UV LED chip. Three distinct emission bands from the InGaN-based LED and the two phosphors are clearly observed at 405 nm, 460 nm and at around 560 nm, respectively. The 405 nm emission band is due to a radiative recombination from a InGaN active layer. This blue emission was used as an optical transition of the $Sr_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu$ blue phosphor and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4:Eu$ yellow phosphor. The 460 nm and 560 nm emission band is ascribed to a radiative recombination of $Eu^{2+}$ impurity ions in the $Sr_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu$ and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4$ host matrix. As a consequence of a preparation of UV White LED lamp using the $Sr_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu$ blue phosphor and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO_4:Eu$ yellow phosphor, the highest luminescence efficiency was obtained at the ration of epoxy/two phosphor (1/0.2361). At this time, the CIE chromaticity was CIE x = 0.3140, CIE y = 0.3201 and CCT (6500 K).

Electroluminescence (EL) comes from the light emission obtained by the electrical excitation energy passing through a phosphor layer undo. an applied high electrical field $(10^6 V/cm)$. The preparation of white and blue phosphors and characterizations of light emitting alternating current powder electroluminescent devices (ACPELDs) were investigated. In this work, we fabricated two kinds of ELDs, that is, yellow electroluminescent device (B-ELD), blue electroluminescent device (B-ELD). The basic st.uctures of Y-ELD and B-ELD are ITO (Indium Tin Oxide)/phosphor layer/Insulator layer/Carbon electrode and ITO/Phosphor layer/Insulating layer/carbon electrode, respectively. Another structures of ITO/Phosphor and Insulator mixture layer/Backelectrode are introduced. EL spectra and luminance of two types of ELDs were measured by changing voltage at fixed frequency 0.4kHz, 1.5kHz. Blue and yellow phosphors prepared in this work show $50cd/m^2\;and\;30cd/m^2$ of luminance at 400Hz, 150V.

Research on down conversion phosphor materials is the key for the development of solid state lighting (SSL). Especially finding alternative red phosphor for white LEDs based on blue or NUV LEDs are important research task. Under this view, we have synthesized a series of $Eu^{3+}$ substituted $La_2W_{2-x}Mo_xO_9$ (x = 0 ~ 2, insteps of 0.1) red phosphor and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence. XRD results reveal a phase transition from triclinic to cubic structure for $x\;{\geq}\;0$. All the compositions show broad charge transfer band due to charge transfer from oxygen to tungsten/molybdenum and red emission due to $Eu^{3+}$ ions. Select compositions show high red emission intensity compared to the commercial red phosphor under NUV/blue ray excitation. Hence, this candidate can be possible red emitting phosphors for white LEDs.

[ $Eu^{2+}$ ]-activated barium magnesium silicate phosphor, $(Ba,Ca)_{3}MgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{x}$, has been known to emit blue-green light. In this study we report the manufacturing processes for producing either pure green or pure blue light-emitting phosphor from the same composition of $Ba_{2-x}Ca_{2}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{x}$ (0 < x < 1) by controlling heat treatment conditions. Green light emitting phosphor of $Ba_{1.9}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{0.1}$ can be produced under the sample preparation condition of highly reducing atmosphere of $23\%\;H_2/77\%\;N_2$, while blue or blue-green light emitting phosphor under reducing atmosphere of $5\~20\%\;H_2\;/\;95\~80\%$ N_2. The green light-emitting phosphors are prepared in two steps: firing at $800\~1000^{\circ}C$ for $2\~5$ h in air then at $1100\~1350^{\circ}C$ for 2-5 h under reducing atmosphere $23\%$$H_2/77\%\;N_2$. The excitation spectrum of the green light-emitting phosphor shows a broadband of $300\~410$ nm. The emission spectrum has a maximum intensity at the wavelength of about 501 nm. The CIE value of green light emission is (0.162, 0.528). The pure blue light-emitting phosphors can be produced using the $Ba{2_x}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{x}$ by introducing additional firing step at $1150\~1300^{\circ}C$ in air before the final reducing treatment. The XRD analysis shows that the green light-emitting phosphor mainly consisted of $Ba_{1.31}Ca_{0.69}SiO_{4}$ (JCPDS $\#$ 36-1449) and other minor phases i.e., $MgSiO_3$ (JCPDS $\#$ 22-0714) and $Ca_{2}BaMgSi_{2}O_{8}$ (JCPDS $\#$ 31-0128). The blue light-emitting phosphor mainly consisted of $Ca_{2}BaMgSi_{2}O_{8}$ phase.
We developed a package of remote phosphor structure having blue LED chips and phosphors physically separated, and the characteristics were evaluated according to different classifications of phosphor coatings. Remote phosphor was produced by screen printing coating on glass substrate with phosphor content rated paste and heat treatment. After mounting Remote phosphor, which has been classified according to number of coatings, on top of blue LED chips, luminous flux, luminous efficacy, CCT and CRI were measured. The measurement results showed the most suitable characteristics of white LED package as a general light source when the content rate of phosphor in Remote phosphor was 80 wt.% with 3 layers of coatings and thickness over $12{\mu}m$.
A phosphor-conversion white light source is demonstrated using an InGaN-based blue laser diode (LD) and a yellow-emitting phosphor excited by the blue LD. The photometric and colorimetric properties of this blue-LD-based white light source are characterized. When injection current of the LD is 100 mA, luminous flux and luminous efficiency of the white light are found to be over 5 lm and 10 lm/W, respectively. When injection current is >90 mA, luminance is estimated to be larger than 10 Mcd/$cm^2$. In addition, color characteristics of the white light such as chromaticity coordinates, a correlated color temperature, and a color rendering index are found to be quite stable as current and temperature of the LD varies. The demonstrated LD-based white light source is expected to be used in high-brightness illumination applications with good color stability.
