  • The spring season in Korea features a dynamic landscape with a variety of flowers such as magnolias, azaleas, forsythias, cherry blossoms and royal azaleas flowering sequentially one after another. However, the narrowing of south-north differences in flowering dates and those among the flower species was observed in 2014, taking a toll on economic and shared communal values of seasonal landscape. This study was carried out to determine whether the 2014 incidence is an outlier or a mega trend in spring phenology. Data on flowering dates of forsythias and cherry blossoms, two typical spring flower species, as observed for the recent 60 years in 6 weather stations of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) indicate that the difference spanning the flowering date of forsythias, the flower blooming earlier in spring, and that of cherry blossoms that flower later than forsythias was 30 days at the longest and 14 days on an average in the climatological normal year for the period 1951-1980, comparing with the period 1981-2010 when the difference narrowed to 21 days at the longest and 11 days on an average. The year 2014 in particular saw the gap further narrowing down to 7 days, making it possible to see forsythias and cherry blossoms blooming at the same time in the same location. 'Cherry blossom front' took 20 days in traveling from Busan, the earliest flowering station, to Incheon, the latest flowering station, in the case of the 1951-1980 normal year, while 16 days for the 1981-2010 and 6 days for 2014 were observed. The delay in flowering date of forsythias for each time period was 20, 17, and 12 days, respectively. It is presumed that the recent climate change pattern in the Korean Peninsula as indicated by rapid temperature hikes in late spring contrastive to slow temperature rise in early spring immediately after dormancy release brought forward the flowering date of cherry blossoms which comes later than forsythias which flowers early in spring. Thermal time based heating requirements for flowering of 2 species were estimated by analyzing the 60 year data at the 6 locations and used to predict flowering date in 2014. The root mean square error for the prediction was within 2 days from the observed flowering dates in both species at all 6 locations, showing a feasibility of thermal time as a prognostic tool.

  • Water temperature-dependent fluctuations of biochemical and molecular activities in the harmful dinoflagellate, Cochlodinium polykrikoides were studied. In terms of genomic DNA concentration, a similar value of 0.6 was observed at $12^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$. However, DNA significantly increased beyond $18^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05), to a maximum of 1.8 at $24^{\circ}C$. DNA concentration significantly decreased to 0.6. The concentrations of RNA and total protein were likely at their highest values of 1.7 and 0.07 ${\mu}g$ $ml^{-1}$ at $24^{\circ}C$, respectively. RNA and total protein concentrations began to increase at $15^{\circ}C$. Oxygen availability between lower and higher temperatures was significantly different and increased from $18^{\circ}C$ according to light intensity, regardless of wavelengths (p<0.05). At $24^{\circ}C$, the highest value of the maximum electron transport rate ($ETR_{max}$), ranging from 537.9 (Ch 1) to 602.5 ${\mu}mol$ electrons $g^{-1}$ Chl ${\alpha}s^{-1}$ (Ch 4), was also apparent. Nitrate reductase (NR) and ATPase activities were at their highest values of 0.11 ${\mu}mol$ $NO_{2}^{-}$ ${\mu}g^{-1}$ Chl ${\alpha}h^{-1}$ and 0.78 pmol 100 $mg^{-1}$ at $24^{\circ}C$, respectively. In an analysis of CHN, the concentration of C and N also significantly increased (p<0.05). Most of the measurements for the cellular activities at $27^{\circ}C$, however, were less than at $24^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that the sub-cellular activities of C. polykrikoides are sensitive to changes in water temperature. It may be desirable to estimate at $18^{\circ}C$ the initiation of the massive blooming development of C. polykrikoides. In nature, it will be very difficult to maintain the massive blooms beyond $24^{\circ}C$ because of a possibly significant decrease in molecular activity of C. polykrikoides.

  • In this study, we collected 29 Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) genetic resources from 10 countries to confirm the possibility of the introduction into Korea. The Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) has the broad industrial use like feed and the 5 times more strong $CO_2$ absorption capacity compared to general plant. So recently it is considered as a good industrial source. We analyzed ecotype, growth and development, yield and feed value of collected resources. They were divided into 3 groups depending on flowering time, early maturing type blooming in early July, mid-late maturing type blooming from end of August to early September and late maturing type blooming in end of October. Early maturing type could get fruitful seed but dropped yield (average 7,895 kg/10a) and late maturing type could get high yield (average 12,572 kg/10a) but deletion. The other side mid-late maturing type could get yield over a certain level (average 11,207 kg/10a) and fruitful seed was ensured. The yields analyzed by resources indicated that K12 (Hongma 300) collected in China, K25 from India, K22 from Russia and K21 (Khonkaen 60) variety from China were more than 13,500 kg per 10a. Feed value of early maturing type had inclined to more better than other types, but like dry digestible matter (DDM) and dry matter intake (DMI) of some late maturing types like K12, K21, K22 which had a high yielding ability were more better than that of early maturing types'. So relative feed value (RFV) which considered comprehensive item for feed value were indicated K21 was 102.5, K12 was 116.2 and K22 was 120.2. 'Jangdae' the variety developed in Korea which could complement of other types' had a good quality for yield 10,975 kg/10a and 12.5% crude protein content and 101.9 of the relative feed value. So we need to be taken power to collection of mid-late maturing types resources.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve coagulation efficiency by pre-treatment of high pH water using sulfuric acid. The common reason of pH increasing at down stream of Nakdong river is water blooming. The pH go above 9.0 during water blooming periods. The higher pH water demands more coagulant and pre-chlorine dosage than lower pH water for better coagulation condition. The DOC, THMFP, UV-254 after coagulation with the same coagulant dosage by pre-treatment from pH 9.2 down to 8.1 with sulfuric acid are 1.84mg/L, $51{\mu}g/L$ and $0.032cm^{-1}$, by pretreatment of chlorine are 2.09mg/L, $78{\mu}g/L$ and $0.030cm^{-1}$, by pre-treatment of sulfuric acid and chlorine are 2.14mg/L, $72{\mu}g/L$ and $0.031cm^{-1}$ respectively. Pretreatment with sulfuric acid can improve water quality and reduce coagulant demand.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the best spray timing for the control of the bacterial shot hole with Bordeaux mixture (6-6) after wintering in the peach orchard. We sprayed Bordeaux mixture (6-6) on 'Mibaekdo', 'Yumyeong' and 'Cheonhong' of peach verities from late-March to mid-April in 2001, 2002 and 2014, and examined how much bacterial shot hole and chemical injure occurred. The infection rate of bacterial shot hole according to spray time was 10.2 to 11.7% at leaves, and 1.7 to 2.2% at fruits in 2002. And Efficacy of the Bordeaux mixture treatment for control of bacterial shot hole at full blooming time 21.2 to 30.4% at leaves, 1.7 to 4.4% at fruits in 2014. The chemical injure occurred slightly for one week hence. The fruit bearing rate was 20.7 to 29.8% at 'Mibaekdo', and 35.4 to 61.9% at 'Yumyeong' peach trees. When the spray at the time of blooming period by bordeaux mixture was investigated the control effect of bacterial shot hole disease. The infected leaves was better than 21 to 25% twice the quantity of finished products and bordeaux self-preparation about 28 to 30% base quantity of finished products, also the control efficacy was higher in infected fruits trends in bordeaux self-preparation method and twice the quantity of finished products.

  • The present study is aimed at examining the effects of the physico-chemical environmental factors of water systems on water bloom at Homin and Gagok reservoirs in Pungcheon-Myeon, Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The mean water temperature and the contents of chlorophyll-a, total-nitrogen, total-phosphorus and phosphate-phosphorus were higher at the Gagok reservoir. On the other hand, the pH mean value was higher at the Homin reservoir. The mean value of microelements (Na, K, Mg, Fe, Si) was higher at the Gagok reservoir. The cyanobacteria which was considered to be the cause of water bloom at the two reservoirs was Microcystis aeruginosa. It started to grow in May and showed the highest standing crop in August. Between the increase of standing crop of M. aeruginosa and the water quality, correlation values of $Na^+$ (r=-0.910, p<0.05), $Fe^{2+}$ (r=-0.855, p<0.05) and $Si^{4+}$ (r=0.989, p<0.01) at the Homin reservoir increased amount of standing crop. Meanwhile, at the Gagok reservoir, the contents of $Na^+$ (r=-0.776, p<0.05), $Si^{4+}$ (r=0.899, p<0.05) were highly related to the increase of standing crop. Interestingly, Si, which is the limiting factor for diatoms, has a high correlation with standing crop of cyanobacteria. In conclusion, the water blooming is caused not by a simple factor but a synergistic effect due to complex actions including high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus ions and many other environmental factors.

  • The present study was conducted to understand the growth pattern, pollinators and their frequency of visits of Euphorbia helioscopia population which is located at Tongyoung areas in Korea. The vegetative parts of the species grow early in March, and flowering begins in the middle of the month, and pollination was completed at the mid of April. As a typical form of early spring type, the fruits of E. helioscopia were matured between early in April and May, and the upper parts of plants were disappeared between May and June. During the blooming season about 11 insects species which belong to Diptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera and Heteroptera were the most common groups found on this plants. Among them the species of Diptera are the most dominant pollinators for E. helioscopia which is concordant to previous reports in Euphorbia species. Despite of significant numbers of insect visitors in Euphorbia species being reported, E. helioscopia attracts only 11 insect species in study areas, and the paucity of species probably associates with the insect fauna in Tongyoung areas or typical patterns of early spring bloomer of Euphorbias. We observed majority of Diptera species to visit in the morning, and the frequency of visit decreased in the afternoon. Thus, it suggests that the visiting activity of Diptera species is not associated with the temperature increase which was reported in Euphorbia species. However, the number of the cyathium during the blooming season is likely to be related to the frequency of visit of pollinators in E. helioscopia.

  • Euglenoids occurring in freshwaters are indicator organisms to be used for assessing water quality and applying to environmental education. One hundred sixty eight taxa of euglenoids belonging to three orders, four families and nine genera occur in various waters, especially in eutrophicated and polluted places in Korea. Members of Euglena and Strombomonas are abundant in urban drainages and old ponds, and those of Trachelomonas, Phacus, and Lepocinclis often occur in stagnant waters such as natural wetlands and old swamps. Population size of some euglenoids is significantly correlated to nitrogenous nutrients. Euglena caudata, E. doses, E. ehrenbergii, E. haemichromata, E. geniculata, E. viridis, Lepocinclis ovum, Strombomonas urceolata, Phacus trypanon, Trachelomonas hispida, and T volvocina cells in Korea bloomed in winter and spring, when other phytoplanktonic algae greatly decrease. Blooming of euglenoids indicates tolerance to pollutants and positive selection as a result of competition with other phytoplankton species. We developed a web site on green euglenoids (Yahoo. com: Science/ Biology/ Botany/ Phycology/ Biology of Green Euglenoids), which may be use d for cyber education of water environment. We also presented a method for assessing water quality using diversity and population size of euglenoids, which is considered to be suitable for environmental education of polluted waters.

  • This study was carried out in the Chungnam National University grassland experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009 in order to find out the growth characteristics of the wildflowers, the seasonal anthesis distribution of the wildflowers and the botanical composition of the wildflowers which were altogether composed of 50% sheep fescue and 50% wildflowers. The experimental species contained 34 species in total consist of sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass), 4 native wildflowers, and 29 introduced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average length was 30.0 cm one year later and 35.6 cm two years later. They bloomed out into ten colors, but into simplified colors during August, September, and October. The peak of the blooming was May and June and blooming pattern leant from August to October. Especially, at the age of two (2009) the color, seasonal distribution, and consistency emerged as problems owing to the reduction of annual wildflowers after winterization. The annual botanical composition of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weed came to 28%, 55%, and 17% each one year later (2008) and 24%, 60%, and 17% each two years later (2009). Based on this result, cultivating wildflower grassland (sheep fescue 50% + wildflowers 50%) is the proper method for making up such flatlands as parks and riversides in a short period (one year) for the purpose of commanding a fine view.

Effect of Seeding Rate (Sheep fescue 90% + wildflowers 10%) on the Growth Characteristics, Seasonal Anthesis Distribution and Botanical Composition in Wildflower Pastures (쉽 페스큐(90%)와 야생화(10%)의 파종비율이 야생화초지의 생육특성, 계절개화분포 및 식생변화에 미치는 영향)

They bloomed out into from six to nine colors, but into one or three colors during August, September, and October. The blooming season leant toward May and June, and from August, there was lots of difficulty in the wildflower blooming and the maintenance of their consistency. Especially, at the age of two (2009) the color, seasonal distribution, and consistency emerged as problems owing to the reduction of annual wildflowers after winterization. The annual botanical composition of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weeds came to 22%, 68%, and 10% each one year later (2008) and 19%, 72%, and 9% each two years later (2009). Based on this result, cultivating wildflower in grassland (90% sheep fescue and 10% wildflowers) is the proper method not only for maintaining green space, to prevent soil erosion by sheep fescue, but also for commanding a fine view of wildflowers.
