  • Blood flow simulations in an realistic carotid bifurcation model with considering wall compliance were carried out to investigate the effect of wall elasticity on the wall shear stress and wall solid stress. Canonical waveforms of flow rates and pressure in carotid arteries were imposed for boundary conditions. Compared to a rigid wall model, we found an increased recirculation region at the carotid bulb and an overall reduction of wall shear stress in a compliant model. Additionally, there was appreciable change of flow rate and pressure wave in longitudinal direction. Both solid and wall shear stress concentration occur at the bifurcation apex.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the anti-diabetes and vasoelasticity effects of Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus in streptozotocin-induced type II diabetes mellitus model. Methods : The anti-diabetic effect of Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus on rats induced with diabetes by streptozotocin was investigated through analyses of changes in body weight, blood glucose, urine volume of rats, viability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs), and elasticity of descending thoracic aorta in rats. The subjects in this study were divided into four groups(n=15): a normal group without any treatment (Con), a normal group with Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus treatment(Con+P), a diabetes group induced by streptozotocin(STZ), and a Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus treatment group under diabetes induced by streptozotocin(STZ+P). Rats were administered streptozotocin to induce diabetes. Results : The study showed that Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus significantly reduced highly increased blood glucose levels(p<0.01) and prevented the diabetic rats from weight loss(p<0.01) and polyurea(p<0.05), Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus also recovered decreased viability of HUVECs(p<0.01) and damaged elasticity of aorta induced by the streptozotocin (p<0.01). Conclusions: It was concluded from the results that Mori Folium and Aurantii Fructus have a distinct anti-diabetes effect and they also prevent damage of blood vessel induced by diabetes. resulting in prevention of cardiovascular diseases ascribed to diabetes.

  • Being a medium to help understand the status of the whole body including the Five Vital Organs and the Six Viscera such as the heart, the mac is considered to represent the elasticity of the blood vessel and the condition of the bloodstream in the Oriental medicine. A doctor makes a subjective judgment on a patient's conditions based on the information derived from the diagnosis and the medical examination of the mac wave. Thus he or she needs objective records and make a decision based on them in order to prevent misdiagnosis. This paper set out to suggest the ways to detect the particular parameters of the mac wave with the methods to visualize the mac wave interpretation to detect basic documents(causes) of health status judgment in three-dimension and with the simulation.

  • The clip-type pulsimeter equipped with a magnetic sensing Hall device and the most popular body sign of the electrocardiogram (ECG) were investigated in order to analyze the pulse wave velocity (PWV). The PWV simultaneously calculated by means of time difference between the maximum peak of ECG pulse wave and the starting point of radial artery pulse wave, and distance difference between the heart position and the radial wrist position. The PWV analyzed from the clinical data was a wider scope of 5~7 m/s with an average value of 6 m/s. By the prediction of blood vessel's elasticity from the analysis of PWV, it may be useful for developing an oriental-western diagnostic medical signal device for a U-health-care system in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of using Flos Sophora japonica as natural health food source. To accomplish this purpose, the contents of general and antioxidative nutrients of Flos Sophora japonica a were measured. The contents of carbohydrate, crude protein, crude lipid and ash are 67.76%, 19.87%, 4.61% and 7.76%. And the calories of Flos Sophora japonica Linne was 318.32 Kcal. Total dietary fiber was 25.35% of total carbohydrates. The percentages of water soluble dietary fiber to insoluble dietary fiber were 1.80 % and 23.56 %, respectively. The protein were contained total 18 different kinds of amino acids. The contents of non-essential and essential amino acids were 4,898.78mg and 5,953.51mg. The K was the largest mineral followed by Ca, P and Mg, which means Flos Sophora japonica Linne is alkali material. The contents of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were 29.69%, 34.93% and 35.38%. Therefore, the amount of the total unsaturated fatty acid was higher than that of any other plant. The content of vitamin C in Flos Sophora japonica Linne was higher than that of any other plant, which suggest that it could increase blood elasticity. The content of rutin, which is responsible for capillary vessel permeability, was 22.60%. The contents of water soluble antioxidative materials in 1 mL of water-extracted Flos Sophora japonica Linne were 3.9 ${\mu}$g which is comparable to 1233.0 mmol of vitamin C in antioxidant effect. The general nutrients and other antioxidatant bioactive materials in Flos Sophora japonica Linne were also potential materials for good health food. It is expected that follow up study of Flos Sophora japonica Linne through developing processed food and evaluation of their functional properties would provide useful information as a source of medicinal foods.

To accomplish this purpose, the contents of general and antioxidative nutrients of Sophora fructus were measured. The contents of carbohydrate, crude protein, crude lipid and ash are 75.9%, 16.4%, 2.41%, and 5.2%, respectively, while the calories of Sophora fructus was 337.3 kcal. Total dietary fiber was 15.07% of total carbohydrates. The percentages of water soluble dietary fiber to insoluble dietary fiber were 1.09% and 10.36%, respectively. The protein was composed of a total of 18 different kinds of amino acids. The contents of essential and non-essential amino acids were 2,310.91 mg and 5,218.52 mg. The K was the largest mineral followed by Ca, P and Mg, which means Sophorae fructus is alkali material. The contents of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were 24.94%, 32.40%, and 32.86%, respectively. Therefore, the amount of the total unsaturated fatty acid was higher than that of any other plant. The content of vitamin C in Sophorae fructus was higher than that of any other plant, which suggests that it could increase blood elasticity. The content of rutin, which is responsible for capillary vessel permeability, was 1.78%. The contents of water soluble antioxidative materials in 1 mL of water-extracted Sophorae fructus were $4.95\;{\mu}g$ which is comparable to 1,560.96 mmol of vitamin C in antioxidant effect. The general nutrients and other antioxidatant bioactive materials in Sophorae fructus were also potential materials for good health food. It is expected that a follow up study on Sophorae fructus through developing processed food and evaluation of their functional properties would provide useful information as a source of medicinal foods.
