The purpose of this study was to estimate sugar intake and relation between it and blood lipid profiles in Korean adult according to age. The 346 subjects were measured anthropometric assessment, dietary intake using 24-hour recall method, and serum lipid profiles. The average age of the subjects of 20-49, 50-64, over 65 years were 40.8, 57.0, 70.2 years, respectively. The mean height and weight were significantly decreased with increment of age(p<0.001, p<0.01). The mean energy, food, and sugar intakes of the age groups were decreased with increment of age(p<0.05, p<0.001, p<0.001), that is, 1649.8 ㎉/1253.6 g/36.1 g for 20~49 years, 1555.4 ㎉/1157.0 g/31.4 g for 50~64 years, 1404.4 ㎉/893.5 g/17.1 g for over 65 years. The major foods consumed sugar of the age groups were watermelon, sugar, ice cream for 20-49 years, watermelon, sugar, peach for 50-64 years, watermelon, sugar, kimchi for over 65 years. Carbohydrate intake of the subject adjusted age provided significantly negative correlation with serum HDL-cholesterol(p<0.05). However, there was not significant correlation between sugar intake and serum lipid profile. Based on these results, further studies on effects on blood lipid of sugar and carbohydrate intakes were needed for proper carbohydrate intake.
Antioxidant vitamin supplementation focuses one's attention on the prevention of age-related diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant status and lipid profiles and to look into the antioxidant vitamin supplementation that affects lipid metabolism in 20 elderly non-smoking Korean women (placebo group: n = 6, vitC suppl: n = 7, vitE suppl: n = 7). Age, height, weight, muscle, percent of fat and WHR were not significantly different among the groups, however $\%$ of fat was above $33\%$ and WHR was above 0.9. And blood pressure of the placebo group was 131.7/81.7 (border line hypertension), that of vitamin C supplement was 141.4/87.1 (hypertension) and that of vitamin E supplement was 151.4/92.9 (hypertension). Although nutrient intakes of all groups were poor, antioxidant status (blood vitamins C, E, A, and beta-carotene) and lipid profile (TG, total-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol) were normal. For nutritional intervention, the vitamin C supplement group received L-ascorbic acid 1,000 mg, and vitamin E supplement group received d-alpha-tocopherol 400IU for 4 weeks, showing the effects of vitamin E supplementation. Response total cholesterol of HDL-cholesterol (T-Chol/HDL) in vitamin E supplement group was significantly decreased from 4.3 to 3.2. And response LDL-cholesterol of HDL-cholesterol (LDL/HDL) in the vitamin E supplement group was also significantly decreased from 2.6 to 1.7. In addition, after the adjustment for plasma lipids (TG, total cholesterol), plasma vitamin A levels in vitamin E supplement group were significantly increased from 7.89 mg/g to 14.91 mg/g. And systolic blood pressure in vitamin E supplement group was significantly reduced. These results suggested that vitamin E supplementation affects the lipid profiles and blood pressure in elderly non-smoking women. So various nutrition programs must be implemented against age-related diseases and further studies are needed regarding sorts and amounts of antioxidant nutrients and supplementation periods.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine lifestyle, BMI, BP, and lipids profiles in male subjects and to explore the relationships among variables. Methods: A total of 148 male subjects were recruited from one life insurance company from December 1, 2005 to February 28, 2006. Data collection methods were structured questionnaire, anthropometry and serum analysis. The relationships among lifestyle, BMI, BP, and serum lipid profiles were assessed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and partial Pearson's correlation coefficient of variables after controlling for age, educational level, and economic status. Results: The mean BMI of the participants was relatively high as 25.38(range: 18.38 - 32.83). The differences of serum lipid profiles according to age, educational level, and economic status were significant. 'Use of caffeine and drugs'(r = -.187, p < .05) and 'consciousness of safety'( r= -.200, p < .05) was negatively related to BMI. Higher score of 'type of personality' domain was correlated with lower systolic BP(r = -.221, p < .01) and lower diastolic BP(r = -.195, p < .05) and was positively correlated with HDL(r = .191, p < .05). Conclusion: 'Use of caffeine and drugs', 'consciousness of safety' and 'type of personality' of lifestyle as well as 'dietary habit' and 'exercise' played a key role in circulatory disease.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: College students are in a period of transition from adolescence to adulthood, in which proper dietary habits and balanced nutritional intake are very important. However, improper dietary habits and lifestyles can bring several health problems. This study was performed to investigate blood lipid profiles, blood aluminum and mercury in college students and the relationships among them. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The subjects were 80 college students (43 males and 37 females) in Gyeonggi-do. General characteristics, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, blood lipids, SGOT, SGPT, and blood aluminum and mercury of the subjects were measured and analyzed, and their relationship was studied. RESULTS: The BMI was significantly higher in males, $23.69{\pm}3.20kg/m^2$, than in females, $20.38{\pm}2.37kg/m^2$ (P < 0.001). The blood pressure was significantly higher in males with $128.93{\pm}12.92mmHg$ systolic pressure and $77.14{\pm}10.31mmHg$ diastolic pressure compared to females with $109.78{\pm}11.97mmHg$ and $65.95{\pm}6.92mmHg$, respectively (P < 0.001). HDL cholesterol in males, $61.88{\pm}13.06mg/dl$, was lower than $64.73{\pm}12.16mg/dl$ in females, but other blood lipid levels were higher in males. Blood aluminum was significantly higher in males, $9.12{\pm}2.11{\mu}g/L$, than in females, $8.03{\pm}2.14{\mu}g/L$ (P < 0.05), and blood mercury was higher in males, $3.08{\pm}1.55{\mu}g/L$, than in females, $2.64{\pm}1.49{\mu}g/L$. The blood lipids showed positive correlation with obesity and blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of obesity, blood pressure, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol were higher in males, suggesting possible association with chronic disease incidence such as hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Thus, it is considered that a systematic health education is needed for college students, especially for males.
The purpose of this study to examine lipid profiles and lipoprotein (a) concentrations and identify the risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with macrovascular complications. The subjects were consisted of 618 out patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from beginning of March through the end of April in 2001, who visited at the endocrinology department at Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital of Catholic University in Seoul. The patient's clinical laboratory data and the occurrence of chronic complications of diabetes were assessed at medical record review. The data were analyzed using for t-test. chi-square test and logistic regression. The results were as follows : 1. There were no significant differences in age. duration of diabetes. body mass index, sex, fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose and $HbA_{1}c$ level between macrovascular complication group and non macrovascular complication group. 2. There were significant differences in the level of total cholesterol. triglyceride. HDL(High density lipoprotein) cholesterol, LDL(Low density lipoprotein) cholesterol and lipoprotein(a) between macrovascular complication group and non macrovascular complication group. 3. Significant factor associated with macrovascular complication in the logistic regression best gut model was HDL cholesterol.

Objectives : To identify the psychosocial well-being status in a rural community, and examine the association between the psychosocial well-being status and adverse lipid profile. Method : In 2001, we surveyed 575 subjects in Yangpyoung, Kyounggido, including medical examination, fasting-blood sample and questionnaires for the psychosocial well-being status, socioeconomic position and behavioral risk factors. The logistic regression analysis was used to examine explanatory factors of the psychosocial well-being status, and association between the psychosocial well-being status and adverse lipid profiles. Result : The association between the psychosocial well-being status and adverse lipid profiles was not strong. The total cholesterol and triglyceridelevels were associated with psychosocial well-being. The adjusted odds ratio for moderate psychosocial well-being relating to total cholesterol was 1.90 (95%CI, 0.82-4.04), but that for triglyceride was 0.65 (95%CI, 0.36-1.21). The HDL-Cholesterol and LOL-Cholesterol level were not associated with the psychosocial well-being status. Conclusion : The total cholesterol and psychosocial well-being status were weakly associated, but the between the psychosocial well-being status and adverse lipid profiles were not consistent.
Objective : The types and functions of lipids involved in glioblastoma (GB) are not well known. Lipidomics is a new field that examines cellular lipids on a large scale and novel aplication of lipidomics in the biomedical sciences have emerged. This study aimed to investigate the potential of blood lipids for use as biomarkers for the diagnosis of GB via untargated lipidomic approach. Gaining a deeper understanding of lipid metabolism in patients with GB can contribute to the early diagnosis with GB patiens and also development of novel and better therapeutic options. Methods : This study was performed using blood samples collected from 14 patients (eight females and six males) and 14 controls (eight females and six males). Lipids were extracted from blood samples and quantified using phosphorus assay. Lipid profiles of between patients with GB and controls were compared via an untargeted lipidomics approach using 6530 Accurate-Mass Q-TOF LC/MS mass spectrometer. Results : According to the results obtained using the untargeted lipidomics approach, differentially regulated lipid species, including fatty acid (FA), glycerolipid (GL), glycerophospholipid (PG), saccharolipid (SL), sphingolipid (SP), and sterol lipid (ST) were identified between in patients with GB and controls. Conclusion : Differentially regulated lipids were identified in patients with GB, and these lipid species were predicted as potential biomarkers for diagnosis of GB.
Purpose: Exercise has been shown to be a simple and economical therapeutic modality that may be considered as an effective aid for diabetic mellitus. For example, exercise training increases insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes. But we found no reported of how exercise affect type 1 diabetes. This study investigated the impact of aerobic and graduated treadmill exercise regimens on body weight, glucose and insulin concentrations, lipid profiles, and oxidative stress indicators in rats with streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes. Glycosylated hemoglobin ($HbA_{1c}$) was determined as an indicator of glucose control during exercise. Methods: In our study, a total of 40 rats were used. Three groups of 10 rats each were given STZ to induce diabetes. The remaining 10 rats became the normal group. After 28 days we determined biochemical parameters such as glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin ($HbA_{1c}$), insulin concentration, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities were also measured. Results: Concentrations of blood glucose and $HbA_{1c}$ in the moderated exercise groups were significantly decreased after 28 days compared with the control group (p<0.05). There was a significant reduction in serum TC and TG in the experimental groups. The activity of SOD increased significantly by 17.70% and 48.25% respectively. Conclusion: These results indicate that physical training and exercise training affects body weight, fasting blood glucose, $HbA_{1c}$, insulin, lipid profiles, and antioxidant status in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. We suggest that graduated treadmill exercise may have therapeutic, preventative, and protective effects against diabetes mellitusby improving glycemic control, oxidant defenses, and lipid metabolism.

The effects of chronic chitosan salt supplementation on the systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and physiological parameters were investigated in healthy male and female adult. Chitosan salt was conducted by measuring various health-related factors such as body composition, plasma $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, lipid, and lipoproteins profiles, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activity. Chitosan salt supplementation no significant differences before and after supplement in body composition variables and in SBP and DBP in either male or female. Plasma sodium and chlorine concentration no significant changes during chitosan salt supplementation, and no significant difference between two genders. Plasma GOT and GPT activity no different before and after supplement in either male or female. GOT activity significantly higher for male before supplement (p<0.05), and 2 weeks after supplement (p<0.01). The lipid and lipoproteins profiles of plasma no significant changes during chitosan salt supplementation in either male or female subjects. In summary, the chronic intake of chitosan salt did not affect the SBP or DBP, and posed no health risks.
The purpose of this study was to investigate self-perception of health and body image, blood lipid profiles and nutrient intake of adolescents. The subjects were 686 adolescent boys (379 middle school students, 307 high school students) and 613 adolescent girls (272 middle school students, 341 high school students) in Incheon. This cross-sectional survey was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire. Fasting blood samples were obtained and analyzed for triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL- and HDL-cholesterol. Nutrient intakes collected from 3 day-recalls were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 10.0 program. Average age, height and weight of male middle school students were 13.8 years, 163.5cm, 56.0kg and those of male high school students were 16.5 years, 171.7cm, 64.3kg. In female, average age, height and weight of middle school students were 13.7 years, 157.1cm, 51.5kg and those of high school students were 16.6 years, 159.7cm, 56.8kg. Female middle school students perceived their health status significantly better compared to female high school students (p < 0.001). Female high school students perceived themselves significantly fatter compared to female middle school students (p < 0.05). Average TG level of female middle school students was significantly higher compared to female high school students (p < 0.01). Nutrient intakes of the male and female students except phosphorus were lower than the Korean RDA. Especially, calcium and iron intakes of male and female students were under the 65% of the Korean RDA. Therefore, proper nutrition education is required for Korean adolescents to encourage desirable food habits and maintain nutritional lipids status. (J Community Nutrition 5(1) : 3∼12, 2003)
