  • In this paper, a new trace driven simulation algorithm is proposed to evaluate the bus traffic and the miss ration of the various sector cache memories, which have various sub-block sizes and block sizes and associativities and number of sets, with a single pass through an address trace. Trace-driven simulaton is usually used as a method for performance evaluation of sector cache memories, but it spends a lot of simulation time for simulating the diverse cache configurations with a long address trace. The proposed algorithm shortens the simulation time by evaluating the performance of the various sector cache configurations. which have various sub-block sizes and block sizes and associativities and number of sets , with a single pass through an address trace. Our simulation results show that the run times of the proposed simulation algorithm can be considerably reduced than those of existing simulation algorithms, when the proposed algorithm is miplemented in C language and the address traces obtained from the various sample programs are used as a input of trace-driven simulation.

  • This paper proposes a Viterbi decoding scheme without trace-back operations to reduce the amount of memory storing the survivor path information, and to increase the decoding speed. The proposed decoding scheme is a modified register exchange scheme, and is verified by a simulation to give the same results as those of the conventional decoders. It is compared with the conventional decoding schemes such as the trace-back and the register exchange scheme. The memory size of the proposed scheme is reduced to 1/(5 x constraint length) of that of the register exchange scheme, and the throughput is doubled compared with that of the trace-back scheme. A decoder with a code rate of 2/3, a constraint length, K=3 and a trace-back depth of 15 is designed using VHDL and implemented in an FPGA. It is also shown that the modified register exchange scheme can be applied to a block decoding scheme.

  • In a shipyard, it is hard to predict block movement due to the uncertainty caused during the long period of shipbuilding operations. For this reason, block movement is rarely scheduled, while main operations such as assembly, outfitting and painting are scheduled properly. Nonetheless, the high operating costs of block movement compel task managers to attempt its management. To resolve this dilemma, this paper proposes a new block movement analysis framework consisting of the following operations: understanding the entire process, log clustering to obtain manageable processes, discovering the process model and detecting exceptional processes. The proposed framework applies fuzzy mining and trace clustering among the process mining technologies to find main process and define process models easily. We also propose additional methodologies including adjustment of the semantic expression level for process instances to obtain an interpretable process model, definition of each cluster's process model, detection of exceptional processes, and others. The effectiveness of the proposed framework was verified in a case study using real-world event logs generated from the Block Process Monitoring System (BPMS).

  • A high performance Viterbi decoder is designed using modified register exchange scheme and block decoding method. The elimination of the trace-back operation reduces the operation cycles to determine the merging state and the amount of memory. The Viterbi decoder has low latency, efficient memory organization, and low hardware complexity compared with other Viterbi decoding methods in block decoding architectures. The elimination of trace-back also reduces the power consumption for finding the merging state and the access to the memory. The proposed decoder can be designed with emphasis on either efficient memory or low latency. Also, it has a scalable structure so that the complexity of the hardware and the throughput are adjusted by changing a few design parameters before synthesis.

  • The effectiveness of buffer cache replacement algorithms is critical to the performance of I/O systems. In this paper, we propose the degree of inter-reference gap (DIG) based block replacement scheme that retains merits of the least recently used (LRU) such as simple implementation and good cache hit ratio (CHR) for general patterns of references, and improves CHR further. In the proposed scheme, cache blocks with low DIGs are distinguished from blocks with high DIGs and the replacement block is selected among high DIGs blocks as done in the low inter-reference recency set (LIRS) scheme. Thus, by having the effect of the partitioning the cache memory dynamically based on DIGs, CHR is improved. Trace-driven simulation is employed to verified the superiority of the DIG based scheme and shows that the performance improves up to about 175% compared to the LRU scheme and 3% compared to the LIRS scheme for the same traces.

  • Although LRU is not adequate for database that has non-uniform reference pattern, it has been adopted in most database systems due to the absence of the proper alternative. We analyze database block reference pattern with the realistic database trace. Based on this analysis, we propose a new cache replacement policy. Trace analysis shows that extremely non-popular blocks take up about 70 % of the entire blocks. The influence of recency on blocks' re-reference likelihood is at first strong due to temporal locality, however, it rapidly decreases and eventually becomes negligible as stack distance increases. Based on this observation, RCB(Reference Characteristic Based) cache replacement policy, which we propose in this paper, classifies the entire blocks into four block groups by blocks' recency and re-reference likelihood, and operates different priority evaluation methods for each block group. RCB policy evicts non-popular blocks more quickly than the others and evaluates the priority of the block by frequency that has not been referenced for a long time. In a trace-driven simulation, RCB delivers a better performance than the existing polices(LRU, 2Q, LRU-K, LRFU). Especially compared to LRU. It reduces miss count by 5~l2.7%. Time complexity of RCB is O(1), which is the same with LRU and 2Q and superior to LRU-K(O(log$_2$N)) and LRFU(O(l) ~ O(log$_2$N)).

  • In the paper, after we propose a viterbi decoder which has multiple buffering and parallel processing decoding scheme through expanding time-divided imput signal, and map a FPGA, we implement a channel coding system together with PC-based software. Continuous input signal is buffered as order of decoding length and is parallel decoded using a high speed cell for viterbi decoding. Output data rate increases linearly with the cell formed the viterbi decoder, and flexible operation can be satisfied by programming controller and modifying input buffer. The tell for viterbi decoder consists of HD block for calculating hamming distance, CM block for calculating value in each state, TB block for trace-back operation, and LIFO. The implemented cell of viterbi decoder used 351 LAB(Logic Arrary Block) and stably operated in maximum 139MHz in APEX20KC EP20K600CB652-7 FPGA of ALTERA. The whole viterbi decoder including viterbi decoding cells, input/output buffers, and a controller occupied the hardware resource of $23\%$ and has the output data rate of 1Gbps.

  • Due to the advantages of fast read/write operation and low power consumption, SSD(Solid State Drive) is now widely adopted as storage device of smart phone, laptop computer, server, etc. However, the shortcomings of SSD such as limited number of write operations and asymmetric read/write operation lead to the problem of shortened life span of SSD. Therefore, the block replacement policy of SSD used as cache for HDD is very important. The existing solutions for improving the lifespan of SSD including the LARC scheme typically employ the LRU algorithm to manage the SSD blocks, which may increase the miss rate in SSD due to the replacement of frequently used block instead of rarely used block. In this paper we propose a novel block replacement scheme which considers the block reuse interval to effectively handle various data read/write patterns. The proposed scheme replaces the block in SSD based on the recency decided by reuse interval and age along with hit ratio. Computer simulation using workload trace files reveals that the proposed scheme consistently improves the performance and lifespan of SSD by increasing the hit ratio and decreasing the number of write operations compared to the existing schemes including LARC.

  • It is very difficult to determine the failure block scale in great rock slopes. Especially, postulating entire slope domain as a failure block without attention to discontinuity trace lenth makes very confuse and difficult to design rock slopes. In this paper, we estimate realistic failure block scale using joint system simulation method and introduce the application procedures on rock slope analysis. Besides, presenting how joint characteristics measurement and statistical analysis results are applicated to slope stability analysis design flow.
