  • This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of defects according to the type of block and spatial type by quantitatively examining defects occurring in block pavement in apartment complex. According to the research results, depending on the type of block, defects have occurred 1,394.3ea/100㎡ in interlocking paver blocks, 464.8ea/100㎡ in clay brick paver blocks, and 235.1ea/100㎡ in shot blasted paver blocks. By space type, the defects were occurred 1,576.0ea/100㎡ on the access road paved by interlocking paver blocks and the defects were found 1,139.6ea/100㎡ in interlocking paver blocks, 235.1ea/100㎡ in shot blasted paver blocks, and 797.1ea/100㎡ in clay brick paver blocks, on the sidewalk. Also the defects are occurred 455.6ea/100㎡ on the resting space and 403.2ea/100㎡ on the gym space paved by clay brick paver blocks. Through the size analysis of the defects in the block paver, in the case 'peeling', the largest volume of 2,539.0㎣ on the sidewalk paved with shot blasted paver blocks, and 'Subsidence' occurred at the widest area of 2,096.0㎠ on the sidewalk where interlocking paver block was constructed. The difference in defect occurrence according to the type of block is considered to be influenced by the block production process, and the space type is considered to be caused the difference in the occurrence of defects according to the cause of construction and the usage pattern of residents. This study conducted a survey on defects in block and analyzed the defect characteristic according to paver material and space type. Base on this, it is judged that it can be used as an efficient basic data for material replacement, improvement, paver planning and construction in the future.

  • A wood-plastic composite (WPC) paver block was manufactured using wood chips waste through an extrusion process, and it was intended to be used for paving in basic rest areas. The first stage in this study covered preliminary tests in terms of flexural strength and dimensional swelling to determine the optimal WPC compounding mix condition, by variation of the WPC ingredients. Next, three different paver blocks including the WPC block, a non-porous cement block, and a porous cement block were tested in terms of various material properties in the laboratory. Finally, two outdoor test sections of the proposed paver blocks were prepared to simulate a basic rest area. Test results indicated that the flexural strength of the WPC paver blocks was about 1.6 times greater than that of the tested cement paver blocks. The WPC block pavement was unaffected by water buoyance as well as volume expansion due to swelling. Results from the impact absorbance test and light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) test clearly showed that the WPC block paving system marginally satisfied the comfortable and safe hardness range from the pedestrians' perspective, while the results demonstrated that it is structurally sound for application as a road paving block.

  • PURPOSES : This study aims to develop a strength test method for irregularly shaped concrete block paver. METHODS : Ten (10) different types of concrete block pavers including porous and dense blocks were tested for strength capacities. Destructive and non-destructive methods were used to develop a strength test method for irregularly shaped concrete block paver. The flexural strength evaluation was conducted in accordance to KS F 4419, while compressive strength was conducted with a 45.7mm-diameter core specimen. The impact echo test method was used to evaluate the elastic modulus. Finally, regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus based on their corresponding test results. RESULTS : The flexural strength of the tested block pavers ranged from 4MPa to 10MPa. At 95% confidence level, the coefficients of determination between compressive-flexural strength relationship and compressive strength-elastic modulus relationship were 0.94 and 0.84, respectively. These coefficients signified high correlation. CONCLUSIONS : Using the test method proposed in this study, it will be easier to evaluate the strength of irregularly shaped concrete block pavers through impact echo test and compressive test, instead of the flexural test. Relative to the flexural strength requirement of 5MPa, the minimum values of compressive strength and elastic modulus, as proposed, are 13.0MPa and 25.0GPa, respectively.

  • As the customer's interest for sidewalk block in the street or apartment complex is increasing, the materials of block which had been a concrete block exclusively are varied to clay paver, native rock and wood etc. Especially, the sales volume of clay paver which is environment-friendly and ergonomic is dramatically increasing every year with two digits growth rate, however, many problems like "Edge Cracking" "Freezing Breakage" "Bending Breakage" "Joint Gap" are happening frequently within a couple of hours after installation due to the durabilities. Because of the characteristics of Ceramic products, clay pavers are very easy to be broken when they are bumped against each other. In addition, they are relatively fragile by a freezing expansion breakage when exposed to water due to hydrophilic property as well as the intensity and absorptance of the products are varied with small difference from the production process such as production equipment and process control. Therefore, it costs a lot of money to repair the breakdown unless production and installation is carried out according to the strict criteria of the quality control. In this study, the symptoms of breakdown frequently happened in clay paver are classified by each type and finally the solution for this problem in the production of brick, installation and criteria of quality control through compressive strength and absorptance test is suggested.

  • Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a group of diseases caused by exposure of the hands to vibration while operating the hand held power tools such as road breaker, drilling machine, demolition hammer in construction works. In this paper, area-changed capacitive micro-accelerometer is designed to measure the vibration exposure on worker's hand when operating a drilling machine on various blocks such as clay block, paver block and solid cement block. The design process includes mathematical modelling of micro-accelerometer and simulations are done using INTELLISUITE 8.6. Experimental results are taken for various blocks surfaces using conventional and micro-accelerometer. Comparisons show that usage of area-changed micro-accelerometer for Hand-arm vibration monitoring provides better sensitivity, which in turn reduces the risk of HAVS in workers.

  • The maintenance and repair work of sidewalk block pavement is a construction that requires a large amount of budget to be invested every year. It is important to establish an appropriate standards for estimating construction cost to ensure proper budgeting and quality. In this study, the standards for estimating the cost of maintenance and construction work for sidewalk blocks that can be applied to the construction volume classified according to the site conditions, construction type, and equipment use differentiated from new construction was established. As a result, the daily construction volume was presented by reflecting excavator and truck as equipment in the combination of paver and common worker. The re-installation was applied by separating the construction volume of sections with general blocks and induction/raised blocks based on the installation of sidewalk blocks after demolition. Generally if block cutting is necessary, the precision construction conditions using a cutting machine were taken into consideration to secure the construction quality. In addition, it has been revised to apply classified construction volume into A and B-Type depending on the park and site conditions.
