This paper discusses a method of determining the optimal design of a block. A horizontal layout of blocks is assumed in which transfer points are located at a side of the block. Each block has several transfer points (TPs) each of which is assigned to a group of adjacent bays and located at the center of the assigned group. The goal is to find the optimal size of a block and the optimal number of TPs while minimizing the total cost consisting of the fixed and operational cost of yard cranes (YCs), the operational cost of internal trucks, and the installation cost of TPs. Constraints on the maximum expected system time of trucks are imposed for the optimization. Formulas for estimating handling operation cycle times of a YC are derived analytically. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate optimal block designs for a given set of data.

Subband/DCT coding has been introduced in order to transmit images of various resultions using one given image-codec, for nowadays there are various grades of quality in visual communication services. However, subband/DCT results in the increawse of multiplication number and memory size. In order to resolve this problem, we propose block-based subband/DCT coding in this paper. In block-based subband/DCT, the number of multiplications is not only reduced because we combine subband decomposistion with DCT, but the size of memory is also reduced because images can be parallel-processed block by block. We show that the number of multiplications is reduced, by analyzing the property ofblock-based subband/DCT matrix mathematically, and examine the performance of proposed coder, which adopts JPEG as backhand-coder after block-based subband/DCT.

Due to the temporal correlation of the image sequence, the motion vector of a block is highly related to the motion vector of the same coordinate block in the previous image frame. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous image frames, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. Using that idea, an efficient new predicted direction search algorithm (PDSA) for block matching motion estimation is proposed in this paper.
This paper introduces DS/Block-Structure - a structural analysis module of DS/Block, which is a Design System to simulate the behavior of a ship block in various crane operations and to evaluate its structural deformation using the finite element method. It runs based on a CAD program, Pro/ENGINEER, and structural analyses are performed by a developed FE code. Boundary conditions for the FE analysis of a ship block under lifting and turnover operation are also considered.

In this study, the thermal behavior characteristics of the cylinder block of a small 3-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine were analyzed, using the 3-dimensional finite element method. Before numerical analyses were conducted, the performance test and the heat transfer experiment of the engine were carried out in order to prepare the input data for the computations. Engine cycle simulation was performed to obtain the heat transfer coefficient and the temperature of the gas and the mean heat transfer coefficient of coolant. Temperature fields as a result of steady-state heat transfer were obtained and compared with experimental results measured at specific points of the inner and the outer walls of the cylinder block. The thermal stress and deformation characteristics resulting from the nonuniform temperature distributions of the block were investigated. The effects of the thermal behaviors of the cylinder block on the engine operations and the unfavourable aspects of excessive thermal loading were examined on the basis of the calculated results.
In this paper, we propose a block-based modularity architecture design method for distributed machine learning. The proposed architecture is a block-type module structure with various machine learning algorithms. It allows free expansion between block-type modules and allows multiple machine learning algorithms to be organically interlocked according to the situation. The architecture enables open data communication using the metadata query protocol. Also, the architecture makes it easy to implement an application service combining various edge computing devices by designing a communication method suitable for surrounding applications. To confirm the interlocking between the proposed block-type modules, we implemented a hardware-based modularity application system.

This paper presents splitting and merging algorithm based on adaptive thresholding. The algorithm first divides the image into blocks, and then compares each block using the calculated thresholding value. The blocks which are same are merged using the certain threshold value and different blocks are split unless it satisfies the threshold value. When the block has been merged, maximum and minimum block sizes are determined then the average block size is determined. After the average block size is determined the average intensity and standard deviation of average block is calculated. The process of thresholding is applied to binarize the image. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed method distinguishes clearly the background with text in the document image.

Up to now, practical engineers applying simplicity value of rockfall block weight suggested in design manual without considering in-situ rockfall block weight which reflect joint characteristics. However, the size of rockfall block varies with joint spacing of discontinuities and influences over rockfall analysis results. In this paper, we estimate realistic rockfall block weight distribution using statistical invariances of joint spacing derived from scan-line survey result. And, we study whether this distribution is applicable in practical rockfall analysis directly. As the results of this study, rockfall analysis results that using rockfall block weight distribution estimated from scan-line survey show resonable and realistic outcomes.

Research of basis technology to construct the human haplotype map is one of active areas in SNP post-genomics research. Identification of haplotype block structure from haplotype data is key step in the haplotype map project. Several algorithms have been proposed for the block identification, including the greedy algorithm, and the dynamic programming based algorithm. This paper analyzed block partitioning method of several algorithm which has been proposed in recent years. HapBlock and HaploBlockFinder are programs used in our experiment.
To increase the efficiency of the hydraulic axial piston pumps, it is need to know the various characteristics in the sliding contact parts of them. Especially, friction characteristics between the cylinder block and the valve plate in the hydraulic axial piston pumps plays an important role to high power density. In this paper, we tried to clarify friction characteristics between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate in bent-axis-type axial piston pump in experimentally. Results are arranged as follow; (1) friction torque between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate has a proportional relation to weight or rotational speed, and is strongly affected by temperature. (2) Friction torque strongly depends on force balance ratio in valve plate. (3) In this experiment, lubrication condition between the cylinder block and the spherical valve plate is under hydrodynamic lubrication.
