Concrete bridge decks are directly exposed to the severe environmental conditions such as rain water and deicing chemicals resulting in the freeze-thaw action and the rebar corrosion during their service lift. These deteriorations of bridge decks shorten the service lift and consequently they are the major concerns of the maintenance. The high performance concrete (HPC) deck is proposed as the alternative to minimize the deterioration problems. To develop more durable concrete deck, the performance characteristic tests of HPC mixtures were carried out. In this study, 4 different concrete mixtures were used varying the mineral admixtures as the cement replacement; ordinary portland cement (OPC), 20% fly ash (FA),20% fly ash with 4% silica fume (FS), and 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag (BS). The design compressive strengths of HPC specimens were 27 MPa and 35 MPa, respectively. The results showed that the compressive strength of concrete did not much affect the durability of concrete. HPC with fly ash and silica lune (FS) were turned out to have the good durability and crack resistance.
Six alkali-activated (AA) concrete mixes were tested to explore the significance and limitations of developing an environmental friendly concrete. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag and powder typed sodium silicate were selected as source material and an alkaline activator, respectively. The main parameter investigated was the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate to the natural sand. Workability and mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete were measured: the variation of slump with time, the rate of compressive strength development, the splitting tensile strength, the moduli of rupture and elasticity, the stress-strain relationship, the bond resistance and shrinkage strain. Test results showed that the compressive strength of lightweight AA concrete sharply decreased when the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate exceeded 30%. In particular, the increase in the discontinuous grading of lightweight aggregate resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of concrete tested. The measured properties of lightweight AA concrete were also compared, wherever possible, with the results obtained from the design equations specified in ACI 318-05 or EC 2, depending on the relevance, and the results predicted from the empirical equations proposed by Slate et al. for lightweight ordinary Portland cement concrete. The stress-strain curves of different concrete were compared with predictions obtained from the mathematical model proposed by Tasnimi. The measured mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete generally showed little agreement with the predictions obtained from these equations.

In this study, it is investigated the properties of high strength concrete using mineral admixture, on the purpose of use of meta kaolin for the substitutive materials to silica fume which is so expensive. The plain mixtures are 3 degrees which are ordinary portland cement, blast furnace slag cement and OPC included fly ash 20%, and silica fume and meta kaolin are substituted for the each plain mixtures in the range of 20%. The results of experiment showed as follows. In case of silica fume was only used, the viscosity and slump flow of fresh concrete were much decreased, on the contrary air content increased. But as usage of meta kaolin increased, to being increase the viscosity of fresh concrete, slump flow increased and air content and usage of super-plasticizer were decreased. Accordingly the workabilities of concrete were against tendency between silica fume and meta kaolin. The compressive strength, velocity of ultrasonic pulse and unit weight were increased according to usage of meta kaolin, the properties of hardened concrete were judged that they are affected with air content of fresh concrete, so it is very important to control air content of high strength concrete. Therefore, the use of meta kaolin is prospected to the substitutive material of silica fume, in case of using silica fume and meta kaolin, it is judged that the optimum usage of silica fume and meta kaolin is about 10% respectively, considering workability and strength of concrete.
In this study, it was developed eco-friendly inorganic binding material concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag and alkali activator (water glass, sodium hydroxides). Eight reinforced concrete beam using inoganic binding material concrete were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. The major variables were mixture ratio of alkali activator, type of admixture and admixture. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the flexural performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode, the maximum load carrying capacity, and ductility capacity. All the specimens were modeled in scale-down size. The eco-friendly concrete using inorganic binding material encouraged alkali activation reaction was rapidly hardening speed and showed possibility as a high strength concrete. Also, the RC beams using new materials showed similar behavior and failed similarly with RC beam used portland cement. It is thought that eco-friendly inorganic binding material concrete can be used with construction material and product as a basic research to replace cement concrete. If there is application to structures in PC member as well as production of 2nd concrete product, it could be improved the productivity and reduction of construction duration etc.

Recently, due to the increasing of interest about the eco-friendly concrete, it is being increased to use concretes containing by-products of industry such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, and etc. Especially, these are well known for improving the resistance to reinforcement corrosion in concrete and decreasing chloride ion penetration. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance to corrosion of reinforcement and critical chloride content of high volume fly ash concrete(HVFAC) which is replaced with fly ash for approximately 50% cement content. For this purpose, corrosion monitoring of reinforcement by half cell potential method was carried out for the cylindrical test specimens that the upper of reinforcement in concrete was exposed to detect the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement. It was observed from the test result that the the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement of HVFAC by the accelerated corrosion tests increased 1.2~1.3 times than plain concrete and the critical chloride contents of plain concrete and HVFAC were found to range $0.80{\sim}1.20kg/m^3$, $0.89{\sim}1.60kg/m^3$, respectively.
The carbon dioxide($CO_2$) released while producing building materials is substantial and has been targeted as a leading contributor to global climate change. One of the most typical method to reducing $CO_2$ for building materials is the addition of slag and fly ash, like pozzolan material, while another method is reducing $CO_2$ production by carbon negative cement development. The MgO-based cement was from the low-temperature calcination of magnesite required less energy and emitted less $CO_2$ than the manufacturing of Portland cements. It is also believed that adding reactive MgO to Portland-pozzolan cements could improve their performance and also increase their capacity to absorb atmospheric $CO_2$. In this study, the basic research for magnesia cement using $MgCO_3$ and magnesium silicate ore (serpentine) as main starting materials, as well as silica fume, fly ash and blast furnace slag for the mineral admixture, were carried out for industrial waste material recycling. In order to increase the hydration activity, $MgCl_2$ was also added. To improve hydration activity, $MgCO_3$ and serpentinite were fired at $700^{\circ}C$ and autoclave treatment was conducted. In the case of $MgCO_3$ as starting material, hydration activity was the highest at firing temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. This $MgCO_3$ was completely transferred to MgO after firing. This occurred after the hydration reaction with water MgO was transferred completely to $Mg(OH)_2$ as a hydration product. In the case of using only $MgCO_3$, the compressive strength was 3.5MPa at 28 days. The addition of silica fume enhanced compressive strength to 5.5 MPa. In the composition of $MgCO_3$-serpentine, the addition of pozzolanic materials such as silica fume increased the compression strength. In particular, the addition of $MgCl_2$ compressive strength was increased to 80 MPa.

Recently, the interest and demand for large-scale buildings and skyscrapers have been on the rise, and the performance of concrete is an area of high priority. Securing 'mass concrete and high strength concrete' is very important as a key construction technology. For high strength concrete, the high heat of hydration takes place inside the concrete because of the vitality of hydration in cement due to the large amount of powder, and leads to problems such as an increase of thermal stress due to the temperature difference with the outside, which results in cracks and slump loss. For this reason, measures to solve these problems are needed. This study aims to reduce the hydration heat of high strength concrete to control the hydration heat of mass concrete and high strength concrete, by replacing the type of admixture, The purpose of this study is to control the hydration heat of high strength concrete and mass concrete. Our idea for this purpose is to apply not only the types and contents of admixture but also incorporation mixing water to ice-flake. As a result of the test, the use of blast furnace slag and fly ash as admixture, and the use of ice-flake as mixing water can improve the liquidity of concrete and reduce slump loss. Significantly dropping the maximum temperature will contribute greatly to reducing cracks due to hydration heat in mass concrete and high strength concrete, and improve quality.
In this study, earlier analyzed tetrapod, one of an original group of offshore constructions studied for manufacturability of the concrete using the properties of steel making slag aggregate. steel making slag aggregate assessment, RCS and Blast Furnace Slag : the 20 mm air-cooled slag and combinations by 50 %, aggregate properties on the most appropriate for the properties of recycled aggregate concrete optimal mix, and assessing it. Properties of concrete used to be derived are judged as to bury the studies show that the hollowing-out of the RCS, plastic sole use is in the workability of the aggregate, plastic in the 20 mm slag also assessed to be a slight disadvantage, but RCS by mixing air-cooled coarse and 50 percent to 20 percent 50 mm. Thus, steel making slag marine structures using recycled aggregate, in rapid chilled slag or air-cooled slag. The sole use of the aggregate them than to combine the aggregate of concrete. After they satisfy the quality standard quality shall be used will aggregate steel making slag who meet the criteria concrete manufacturing in general or par with the aggregate of concrete. Performance was assessed as to develop a more than that.

The aim of this research work is to investigate the mix proportion of multi-component cement incorporating ground granulated blast furnace(GGBFS), fly ash(FA) and silica fume(SF) as an addition to cement in ternary and quaternary combinations. The water-binder ratio was 0.45. In this study, 50% and 60% replacement ratios of mineral admixture to OPC was used, while series of combination of 20~40% GGBFS, 5~35% FA and 0~15% SF binder were used for fundamental characteristics tests. This study concern the GGBFS/FA ratio and SF contents of multi-component cement including the compressive strength, water absorptions, ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV), drying shrinkage and X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysises. The results show that the addition of SF can reduce the water absorption and increase the compressive strength, UPV and drying shrinkage. These developments in the compressive strength, UPV and water absorption can be attributed to the fact that increase in the SF content tends basically to consume the calcium hydroxide crystals released from the hydration process leading to the formation of further CSH(calcium silicate hydrate). The strength, water absorption and UPV increases with an increase in GGBFS/FA ratios for a each SF contents. The relationship between GGBFS/FA ratios and compressive strength, water absorption, UPV is close to linear. It was found that the GGBFS/FA ratio and SF contents is the key factor governing the fundamental properties of multi-component cement.

The eight mixes and artificial soil aggregates were prepared for evaluating the practical application of lightweight foamed concrete as soil aggregates. The main parameter was unit binder content ranged between from 100 to $800kg/m^3$. In lightweight foamed concrete, flow, slurry and dried density, and compressive strength at different ages were measured. In Artificial soil aggregates crushed from lightweight foamed concrete, particle size distribution, pH, coefficient of permeability, cation exchange capacity(CEC), and ratio of carbon to nitrogen(ratio of C/N), were measured. The test results showed that flow, slurry and dried density, and compressive strength at different ages of lightweight foamed concrete increased with the increasing of unit binder content. Compressive strength at age of 28, of lightweight foamed concrete with unit binder of more than $500kg/m^3$, was more than 4 MPa. The ammonium phosphate immersion time of more than age of 3, was effective to decrease pH of artificial soil aggregates. In addition, artificial soil aggregates was evaluated as high class in terms of cation exchange capacity(CEC), while satisfied with value of ratio of carbon to nitrogen(ratio of C/N) recommended by landscape specification.
