The procedure for the aerodynamic design of the rotor blades for 10 kW-level HAWT (horizontal axis wind turbine) has been investigated to be practiced systematically. The approximately optimal shape was designed using an inverse method based on the momentum theory and the blade element method. The configuration was tested in the wind tunnel of the Korea Air Force Academy, and the data was compared with those obtained from the real system manufactured from the present design. From this research, the authors established the systematic technolo for wind turbine blades, and set up the technical procedure which can be extended for the future design of middle and large sized wind turbines.
Hydraulic performance and flow resistance tests were performed to confirm the main parameters of the hydraulic instrumentation that can affect the pump performance of the reactor coolant pump. The flow resistance test offers important experimental data, which are necessary to predict the behavior of the primary coolant when the circulation of the reactor coolant pump is stopped. Moreover, the shape of the hydraulic section of the pump, which was considered in the test, was prepared to compare the mixed-flow- and axial-flow-type models, the difference in the number of blades of the impeller and diffuser, the difference in the shape of the impeller blade and its thickness, and the effect of coating at the suction bell. Additionally, five models of the hydraulic part were manufactured for the experiments. In this study, the differences in performance owing to the design factors were confirmed through the experimental results.
As an important device in the nuclear island, the nuclear coolant pump can continuously provide power for medium circulation. The vane is one of the stationary parts in the nuclear coolant pump, which is installed between the impeller and the casing. The shape of the vane plays a significant role in the pump's overall performance and stability which are the important indicators during the safety serve process. Hence, the bionic concept is firstly applied into the design process of the vane to improve the performance of the nuclear coolant pump. Taking the scaled high-performance hydraulic model (on a scale of 1:2.5) of the coolant pump as the reference, a united bionic design approach is proposed for the unique structure of the guide vane of the nuclear coolant pump. Then, a new optimization design platform is established to output the optimal bionic vane. Finally, the comparative results and the corresponding mechanism are analyzed. The conclusions can be gotten as: (1) four parameters are introduced to configure the shape of the bionic blade, the significance of each parameter is herein demonstrated; (2) the optimal bionic vane is successfully obtained by the optimization design platform, the efficiency performance and the head performance of which can be improved by 1.6% and 1.27% respectively; (3) when compared to the original vane, the optimized bionic vane can improve the inner flow characteristics, namely, it can reduce the flow loss and decrease the pressure pulsation amplitude; (4) through the mechanism analysis, it can be found out that the bionic structure can induce the spanwise velocity and the vortices, which can reduce drag and suppress the boundary layer separation.
In this study, three-dimensional incompressible viscous flow analysis and optimization using response surface method are presented for the design of a jet fan. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Wavier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard k-$\epsilon$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governing equations are discretized using finite volume method. Sweep angles and maximum thickness of blade are used as design variables for the shape optimization of the impeller in response surface method. The experimental points which are needed to construct response surface are obtained from the D-optimal design and Full Factorial design and relations between design variables and response surface are examined.

In the early stage of helicopter design, an optimal configuration is usually determined after a numerous parametric study about the aerodynamic performance due to geometric variation. In order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a shrouded tail rotor, optimization of the tip clearance gap between blade and shroud, the blade planform shape, and the arrangement of blade spacing is required. In the present study, the aerodynamic performance characteristics of a shrouded tail rotor due to geometric variation was investigated by using an inviscid compressible unstructured mesh flow solver for rotary wings.

This study focuses on the manufacturing process of a magnesium alloy impeller used for the fuel cell car using the hot forging technology. The impeller has the very complicated shape with sharply curved blade and thus generally produced by mechanical machining or casting process. However, since these technologies give the high manufacturing cost or poor mechanical properties, the forging technology is required to make the high-quality impeller with the lower manufacturing cost. In order for production of the impeller by forging technology, the parametric studies using finite element analyses were carried out to find the optimal perform shape of impeller made of magnesium alloy AZ 31 and finally die design was proposed based on the simulation results.

This paper presents the performance characteristics of a Darrieus-type vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) with National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) airfoil blades. To estimate the optimum shape of the Darrieus-type wind turbine in accordance with various design parameters, we examine the aerodynamic characteristics and separated flow occurring in the vicinity of the blade, the interaction between the flow and blade, and the torque and power characteristics that are derived from it. We consider several parameters (chord length, rotor diameter, pitch angle, and helical angle) to determine the optimum shape design and characteristics of the interaction with the ambient flow. From our results, rotors with high solidity have a high power coefficient in the low tip-speed ratio (TSR) range. On the contrary, in the low TSR range, rotors with low solidity have a high power coefficient. When the pitch angle at which the airfoil is directed inward equals $-2^{\circ}$ and the helical angle equals $0^{\circ}$, the Darrieus-type VAWT generates maximum power.

This paper discusses a one-way fluid structural interaction (FSI) analysis and shape optimization of the impeller blades for a 15,000 HP centrifugal compressor using the response surface method (RSM). Because both the aerodynamic performance and the structural safety of the impeller are affected by the shape of its blades, shape optimization is necessary using the FSI analysis, which includes a structural analysis for the induced fluid pressure and centrifugal force. The FSI analysis is performed in ANSYS Workbench: ANSYS CFX is used for the flow field and ANSYS Mechanical is used for the structural field. The response surfaces for the FSI results (efficiency, pressure ratio, maximum stress, etc.) generated based on the design of experiments (DOE) are used to find an optimal shape for the impeller blades, which provides the maximum aerodynamic performance subject to the structural safety constraints.

The shape of an impeller splitter for a dual-inlet centrifugal blower was optimized to enhance the blower performance. Two design variable, the normalized chord and pitch of a splitter, were used to evaluate the blower performance and internal flow fields based on the three-dimensional flow analysis. The blower performance obtained using this numerical simulation had a maximum error of 4 percent compared to that in an experiment at the design flow condition. The shape optimization of the splitter successfully increased the blower efficiency and pressure by 3.65 and 1.14 percent compared to the reference values. The blower performance was increased by reducing the flow separation near the blade suction surface by optimizing the shape of the splitter, which produced a pressure increase at the outlet of the volute casing.

Recently, the design point of the propeller is gradually changing due to the demand for energy saving and environmental protection. Until recently, self-propulsion model tests were conducted using stock propellers and geometry information was provided to propeller designers, but the range of existing stock propellers did not keep up with the changing design points, and the range of series propellers required in the initial design was also insufficient. Future propeller performance requires high performance and eco-friendliness, and the need for expansion of series propellers has increased. In order to respond to future needs and provide a wide range of advantages in propeller design, KRISO manufactures about 100 series propellers and builds series data through a model tests. In this paper, the approach method for deriving the representative optimal shape to be applied to the 4-blade series propeller in the initial stage of series propeller development was summarized.
