We investigated the reduction leaching process of manganese dioxide ore using black locust as reductant in sulfuric acid solution. The effect of parameters on the leaching efficiency of manganese was the primary focus. Experimental results indicate that manganese leaching efficiency of 97.57% was achieved under the optimal conditions: weight ratio of black locust to manganese dioxide ore (WT) of 4:10, ore particle size of $63{\mu}m$, $1.7mol{\cdot}L^{-1}\;H_2SO_4$, liquid to solid ratio (L/S) of 5:1, leaching time of 8 h, leaching temperature of 368 K and agitation rate of $400r{\cdot}min^{-1}$. The leaching rate of manganese, based on the shrinking core model, was found to be controlled by inner diffusion through the ash/inert layer composed of associated minerals. The activation energy of reductive leaching is $17.81kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. To conclude the reaction mechanism, XRD analysis of leached ore residue indicates manganese compounds disappear; FTIR characterization of leached residue of black locust sawdust shows hemicellulose and cellulose disappear after the leaching process.
Less used small diameter logs of black locust were heated at $250^{\circ}C$ for improving utilization. The volatile compounds emitted by the heated logs were analyzed. Their effect of formaldehyde absorption was evaluated with PB. Ester and acid compounds were dominant in content. Especially, methyl acetate and acetic acid showed the highest contents. The total content of aromatic compounds decreased as heating time increased. Amoung ketone compounds, The contents of 2-propanone, 2-pentanone, 3-petanone, 3-hexanone and cyclopentenone decreased with the increase of heating time, but the others did not. The contents of the chemicals, furfural and 3-pentanol, increased with heating time, while that of 2-methyl butanal decreased. It was hard to say that formaldehyde was absorbed by the heated black locust samples. Some decorative goods were designed with the heated logs.
Biological activities such as antioxidant, anticoagulant, and α-glucosidase inhibitory effects of 40% (v/v) ethanolic extract from black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) flower were investigated. The polyphenol content of the black locust flower extract was 39.8±0.5 mg gallic acid equivalents/g. The flower extract represented antioxidant effects such as free radical, cationic radical, and nitrite scavenging abilities as well as reducing power. Also the flower extract inhibited α-glucosidase activity and common pathway in plasma coagulation system.
In 1970's Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) had been widely planted Korea as an important forest greening species for erosion control afforestation. Since 2000, however, the tree's leaf-yellowing symptom has often been observed at a limited region and then spreaded out over the country in 2006. This study was conducted to study soil physiochemical properties of black locust stands with and without the leaf-yellowing symptom in Osan, Gyeonggi province. Most of soils in sampling sites were mostly slightly eroded, dry, and moderately dry. Available soil depth(16cm) and total soil depth(26cm) in leaf-yellowing (LY) site were significantly lower than in non leaf-yellowing (Non-LY) site's soil depths which were 30cm and 56cm, respectively. And solid phase proportion and bulk density in soils were lower in LY site than in non-LY site soils, while soil liquid phase proportion was also low. It could reflect that LY site soils might have a lower air and moisture movement in the rhizosphere of black locust stand compared with non-LY site soils. Soil acidity in both sites was very strong acid, soil pH (4.42) of LY site was slightly lower than non-LY site's (pH 4.54). Content of available phosphorous, exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ and percent base saturation were less than LY site. These results indicated that soil physiochemical condition in LY site, more deteriorated than non-LY site, should adversely affect the retention and supply capacity of soil nutrients and moisture. Therefore the black locust may be more sensitive to other environmental stresses.

Using satellite image and GIS, spatial distribution characteristics of black locust forest as honey plant area was identified and analyzed. Upon the result, the most suitable area for black locust forest was selected through the integration analysis of transparent overlay. The variables used for spatial analysis such as topography(elevation, aspect, slope), soil, drainage, distance from urban area, land use, meteorological elements were considered. Based on the suitability analysis, it was clarified that the integration of linear and factor combination technique is greatly efficient method for the most suitable area. In addition, Gokung, Imgo, Chungtong, Hwanam area were shown to be suitable in Young-chun Area. As the result of suitability analysis for honey plant area of black locust in Young-chun using satellite image and GIS, the present portion of potential distribution area was produced about 42.53%. The portion of most suitable area for honey plant area of black locust was about 26.77%. Finally, the total area for honey plant area of black locust in Young-chun came up to $15.79km^2$. Additionally, satellite image and GIS were expected to be significant tools for suitability analysis of honey plant complex area.

The objectives of this study were to select early, late, and abundant flowering trees of black locust from domesticated and introduced cultivars, and prediction of flowering period by calculation of accumulated temperature in spring. Four cultivars (Debreceni-2, Pusztavacs, Jaszkiseri, and Rozsaszin AC) from Hungary and a cultivar from Beijing, China, were introduced, propagated by seed and planted in a seed orchard. For domesticated black locust, 63 cultivars from 10 locations throughout the country were selected and propagated by root cutting. Criteria for selection of domesticated cultivars were abundant flowering, long flowering period, or abundant nectar production with, if possible, straight stems. Accumulated temperature was calculated from data of a nearby weather station by accumulating daily maximum temperature minus 5 degree Celsius from January 1 up to the date reaching 880 degrees. Daily mean temperature was also used to calculate accumulated temperature up to the date reaching 450 degrees. The percentages of two-year and three-year-old flowering trees propagated by root cutting were higher than that of trees propagated by seeds, while four-year-old trees all flowered regardless of propagation methods. Among the domesticated cultivars, all the cultivars from Ganghwa showed abundant flowering with highest nectar production of 6.5 ul per flower, which was 100% more than other domesticated cultivars and 50% more than Debreceni-2 cultivar with highest nectar production among the introduced cultivars from Hungary. At the end of the eight years of observations, two trees of Debreceni-2 cultivars and a tree from Beijing, China were selected for early flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days earlier than average trees, while a tree of Debeceni-2 and three trees from Bejing were selected for late flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days later than average trees. It is possible to extend the flowering period of black locust by 4 to 6 days by planting early and late flowering cultivars together. Abundant flowering trees were unable to be selected due to severe damages by leaf gall midges which killed many trees and reduced the crown size of the remaining trees in the seed orchard, and which were first found in Korea in 2001 and now damaging most of the black locust forests in Korea. The prediction of flowering period by accumulated temperature indicated that black locust flowered to a peak when accumulated daily maximum temperature reached 880 degrees Celsius, and when daily mean temperature reached 450 degrees.
Obolodiplosis robiniae (Haldeman, 1987) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), a pest species on a black locust tree, which was originally distributed in North America, is newly recorded from Korea. The specimens were collected from the central Korea. Morphological diagnoses of the both sexes and the symptoms on the host plants are provided.
Black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and poplar(Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa) trees were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$(7:3, v/v) after drying, fractionated with hexane, chloroform and ethylacetate, and freeze dried to get some brown powder. Each fraction of the powder was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol-hexane mixture as eluting solvents. The wood extractives of black locust contained (+)-leucorobinetinidin as flavan, robtin as flavanone and dihydrorobinetin as flavanonol, and robinetin as flavonol. The poplar bark extractives contained various kinds of phenolic compounds : (+)-catechin as flavan, naringeoin, eriodictyol, sakuranetin, aromadendrin and taxifolin as flavanonol, salireposide as salicin derivative, and minor compounds such as aesculin and p-coumaric acid. However, aesculin has not been reported as a constituent of the poplar bark in Korea yet. NMR and FAB-MS analyses were done to elucidate the structures of isolated phenolic constituents.
Wood of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and bark of poplar(Populus alba x glandulosa), ash(Fraxinus rhynchophylla) and elm(Ulmus davidiana var. japonica) trees were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$(7:3. v/v), fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and $H_2O$. then freeze dried to get some dark brown powder for bioactive tests. Decay-resistant activity was tested using wood block specimens from the hardwood trees and expressed by weight loss rate. Black locust specimens indicated the best anti-decaying property and poplar blocks were the worst. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were also investigated against each wood or bark extractives. Antifungal and antibacterial activities did not indicate any significant differences among the tested fractions. In antioxidant activity. ${\alpha}$-tocopherol one of natural antioxidants. and BHT, one of synthetic antioxidants, were used as references to compare with the antioxidant activities of the extracted fractions. Ethylacetate fraction of ash bark indicated the highest activity besides BHT in this test and all fractions of black locust extractives also indicated higher activities compared with the other fractions.

Stem respiration rate ($R_{stem}$) was examined using an open flow system on black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.). $R_{stem}$ exponentially increased with increasing air and stem temperature during measurement period and was most closely correlated with stem temperature. It was more closely correlated with stem temperature observed 0.5-2.0 hrs earlier than with current stem temperature, that is, there was time lag between the increase of stem temperature and the efflux of $CO_2$ from stem. $R_{stem}$ gradually increased from spring to summer, and then decreased during autumn. $R_{stem}$ ranged from 0.13 to $4.44{\mu}mol$$CO_2m^{-2}s^{-1}$. $Q_{10}$ decreased with increasing stem temperature, and varied along position (or diameter) within trees during the same period, especially during the growing season. On the other hand, time lag was shortened with increasing temperature.
