  • We developed a robot that has four limbs, each of which has the same kinematic structure and has 6 degrees of freedom. The robot is 600mm high and weighs 4.3kg. The robot can perform walking and manipulating task by using the four limbs selectively. The robot has three walking patterns. The first one is biped walking, which uses two rear limbs as legs and two front limbs as arms. The second one is biped walking with supporting arms, which is basically biped walking but uses two arms as supporting legs for increasing stability of the robot. The last one is quadruped walking, which uses all the four limbs as legs. When a task for the robot is given, the robot approaches the task point by selecting an appropriate walking pattern among three walking patterns and performs the task. The robot has many degrees of freedom and is a redundant system for a three dimensional task. We propose a redundancy resolution method, in which the robot’s translational move to the task point is modeled as a prismatic joint and optimal solutions are obtained by optimizing some performance criteria. Several simulations are performed for the validity of the proposed method.

  • In the systems such as walking robots or high speed operating manipulators, the effect of nonlinear terms is important and can not be neglected. Therefore the application of linear control law to such systems is inadequate. Moreover, because of the mathematical modeling errors the systems may become unstable. In this study, we designed a nonlinear controller with sliding mode scheme, which is robust to the modeling errors and applied this control algorithm to the 5 DOF biped robot system. Throught the computer simulations, we examined walking characteris and walking stability of the 5 DOF biped robot system.

  • In this paper, it is presented a learning controller for repetitive walking control of biped walking robot. We propose the iterative learning control algorithm which can learn periodic nonlinear load change ocuured due to the walking period through the intelligent control, not calculating the complex dynamics of walking robot. The learning control scheme consists of a feedforward learning rule and linear feedback control input for stabilization of learning system. The feasibility of intelligent control to biped robotic motion is shown via dynamic simulation with 25-DOF biped walking robot.

  • This paper presents a path planning algorithm for biped walking robot in 3-D workspace. Since the biped walking robot can generate path on some 3-D obstacles that cannot generate path in case of mobile robot, we have to make a new path planning algorithms. A 3-D-to-2-D mapping algorithm is proposed and two kinds of path planning algorithms are also proposed. They make it easier to generate an efficient path for biped walking robot under given environment. Some simulation results are shown to prove the effectiveness of proposed algorithms.

  • This study deals with the gait optimization of via points on biped robot. ZMP(Zero Moment Point) is most important index in a biped robot's dynamic walking stability. To stable walking of a biped robot, legs's trajectory and a desired ZMP trajectory is required, balancing weight's movement is solved by FDM(Finite Difference Method). In this study, optimal index is defined to dynamically static walking of a biped robot, and optimization of via points is applied by GA(Genetic Algorithm).

  • To implement Argentina tango dancer-like walking of the humanoid robot, a new trajectory generation scheme based on particle swarm optimization of the blending polynomial is presented. Firstly, the characteristics of Argentina tango walking are derived from observation of tango dance. Secondly, these are reflected in walking pose conditions and cost functions of particle swarm optimization to determine the coefficients of blending polynomial. For the stability of biped walking, zero moment point and reference trajectory of swing foot are also included in cost function. Thirdly, after tango walking cycle is divided into 3 stages with 2 postures, optimal trajectories of ankles, knees and hip of lower body, which include 6 sagittal and 4 coronal angles, are derived in consequence of optimization. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed scheme is validated by simulating biped walking of humanoid robot with derived trajectories under the 3D Simscape environment.

  • This paper deals with dynamic walking and inverse dynamic analysis of the IWR biped walking robot. The system has nine bodies of the multibody dynamics. and all of the .joints of them are made up of the revolute joints at first. The problem of redundant constraint in double support phase is solved by changing the type of the joints considering kinematic relation. To make sure of its dynamic walking, the movement of balancing weight is determined by which satisfies not only the condition of ZMP by applying the principle of D'Alembert but also the contact condition of the ground. The modeling of IWR and dynamic walking are realized using DADS.

  • We developed a human-sized BWR(biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. The robot overcomes the limit of the driving torque of conventional BWRs. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch joints and one roll joint. In all, a 10 degree-of-freedom robot with two balancing joints was developed. The BWR was developed to walk autonomously such that it is actuated by small torque motors and is boarded with DC battery and controllers. In the performance test, the BWR performed nice motions of sitting-up and sitting-down. Through the test, we could find capability of high performance in biped-walking.
