Muscovite, chlorite and biotite in metapelites of the Ogcheon Hetamorphic Belt are studied using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), backscattered electron images (BEI) of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and lattice fringe images of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These minerals are observed to be intergrown under a polarized light microscope and are apparently interlayered below EPMA resolution; EPMA data often indicate mixtures of phyllosilicates such as muscovite/chlorite (M/C), biotite/chlorite (B/C), muscovite/pyrophyllite/chlorite (M/P/C). biotite/pyrophyllite/chlorite (B/P/C) or biotite/muscovite/chlorite (B/M/C). BEI observations show that the three minerals (muscovite, chlorite and biotite) are mixed at various scales in a grain through the garnet zone, and the interlayering of the three minerals are observed from TEM lattice fringe images and selected area electron diffraction patterns. The result of TEM observations reveals that 7-$\AA$ layers (serpentine, precursor of chlorite) are interlayered within 10-$\AA$ layers (muscovite) at 100~200 $\AA$ scale as well as M/C in the chlorite zone. The 7-$\AA$ layers become smaller in size and less frequent in the biotite tone, and 10-$\AA$ layers are interlayered with chlorite (14 $\AA$) at an individual layer scale. The 7-$\AA$ layers are no longer observed in the garnet zone, and 10-$\AA$ layers (biotite) are interlayered with chlorite (B/C) at 50~100 $\AA$ scale. Relatively large scale (1000~2000 $\AA$) of intergrowth is also frequently observed from the garnet zone samples. However, rocks from all three metamorphic zones show interlayering of a few units of 7-, 10- and 14-$\AA$ layers with each other at TEM observations. The result of this study implies that metamorphic minerals such as muscovite, chlorite and biotite form through disequilibrum mineral reactions resulting in inhomogenious phases.
U-Pb ages were determined from the Yongyudo biotite granites from western parts of Gyeonggi massif. The results show that the emplacement age of the Yongyudo biotite granite is ca. 227-230 Ma. Such age result that is somewhat older than previous reported ages, suggesting further investigations for the timing and evolution of the Jurassic granites of the western Gyeonggi massif.
In Exp. 1, this study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary germanium biotite on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in nursery pigs. A total of sixty crossbred pigs (initial body weight 15.09$\pm$0.18kg) were used in this experiment. This study was carried out for 28 days. The five treatments were control (CON; basal diet), GB0.1 (basal diet + germanium biotite 0.1%), GB0.3 (basal diet + germanium biotite 0.3%), GB0.6 (basal diet + germanium biotite 0.6%) and GB1.0 (basal diet + germanium biotite 1.0%). For overall period, ADG and Gain/feed were not significantly different among the treatments. In Exp. 2, a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of germanium biotite as a substitute for antibiotics in growing pigs. A total of fifty five crossbred pigs (initial body weight 32.47$\pm$0.9kg) were used in this experiment. The three treatments were negative control (NC: basal diet without antibiotic), positive control (PC: basal diet + 200ppm CTC) and GB0.3 (basal diet + germanium biotite 0.3%). Pigs fed PC (17%, 385 vs 451 g/d) and GB0.3 (14%, 385 vs 438 g/d) diets grew faster(P<0.05) than pigs fed NC diet. Pigs fed PC and GB0.3 diets resulted higher(P<0.05) ADFI than pigs fed CON diet. However, pigs fed GB0.3 diet had improved gain/feed compared to pigs fed NC diet(P<0.05). Apparent digestibility of DM and N by pigs fed PC and GB0.3 diets were greater(P<0.05) than those by pigs fed NC diet. In Exp. 3, a study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary germanium biotite on growth performance, plasma characteristics, backfat thickness and fecal ammonia gas concentration in finishing pigs. A total of seventy-two finishing pigs (initial body weight 78.56$\pm$1.32kg) were used in this experiment. The treatments included 1) Control (CON; basal diet) 2) GB1.0 (basal diet + germanium biotite 1.0%), 3) GB3.0 (basal diet + germanium biotite 3.0%). Pigs fed GB1.0 diet grew faster than pigs fed CON diet and GB0.3 diet (P<0.05). Also, pigs fed CON diet showed higher(p<0.05) ADFI than pigs fed GB3.0 diet. Pigs fed GB diets had improved gain/feed compared to pigs fed CON diet(P<0.05). Total?and VLDL concentrations in plasma of pigs fed GB diets treatments were significantly decreased compared to those in pig fed CON diet(P<0.05). However, HDL-cholesterol concentration in plasma of the pig was significantly increased compared to those in pigs fed CON diet (P<0.05). Pigs fed CON diet exerted higher(P<0.05) backfat thickness than pigs fed GB1.0 (5.4%, 27.19 vs 25.71mm) and GB3.0 (16.1%, 27.19 vs 22.81mm) diets. Feces from CON treatment were higher in fecal ammonia gas concentration than faces from pigs fed GB1.0 (64.1%, 17.00 vs 6.10mg/kg)and GB3.0 (61.8%, 17.00 vs 6.50mg/kg) treatments(P<0.05). In conclusion, the results suggest that the dietary addition of germanium biotite into diets for nursery pigs did not affect growth performance. The results also suggest the possibility of germanium biotite to replace antibiotic in diets for growing pigs. In finishing pigs, dietary supplementation of germanium biotite was an effective means for improving growth performance and for decreasing Total-and LDL+VLDL-plasma cholesterols, backfat and fecal ammonia gas concentration.
To investigate the effect of the weathering process of biotite on Cs sorption, sorption experiment of Cs with $10^{-3}M$ solution was carried out on the biotite reacted at different reaction times at pH 2 and 4, and 1 M solutions of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Rb, and Cs. Peak changes were observed for some samples by XRD, indicating that new mineral phase formed by biotite weathering. Among several factors, cations in solutions have the most significant influence on the mineralogical changes. The samples reacted with Na showed the most outstanding change with increasing peak width and appearance of $12{\AA}$ peak and $14{\AA}$ peak. This new peaks indicate the formation of hydrobiotite and vermiculite. The new peaks had stronger peak intensity for the sample reacted at pH 4 than that at pH 2, probably due to the fast dissolution of small particles and edges and resultant decrease in the formation of expandable layers. The biotite reacted at Mg solution showed small intensity at $14{\AA}$. Based on XRD results, the degree of biotite weathering was in the order of Na, Mg, and Ca. The samples reacted with K, Rb, Cs solutions did not show noticeable mineralogical changes caused by weathering. The amount of sorbed Cs on weathered biotite showed close relationship with the degree of weathering indicated by XRD. At both pH 2 and 4, the biotite reacted with Na solution showed the highest Cs sorption, and those with Mg and Ca solutions showed the next highest ones. The sorbed amounts of Cs on the bitote reacted with K, Rb, Cs solutions were relatively low. This indicates that at the Cs concentration ($10^{-3}M$) which we used for this experiment and which was much higher than the maximum Cs concentration sorbed on the frayed edge site, expandable layer plays more important role than frayed edge. In the cases of K, Rb, and Cs solutions, Cs sorption was decreased because K is the same cations as the one in the interlayer or the sorption of Rb and Cs on the frayed edge prevents the formation of expandable layers.
The NE-trending Honam shear zone is a broad, dextral strike-slip fault zone between the southern margin of the Okcheon Belt and the Precambrian Yeongnam Massif in South Korea and is parallel to the trend of Sinian deformation that is conspicuous in Far East Asia. In this paper, we report geochemical and isotopic(Sr and Nd) data of mylonitic quartz-muscovite Precambrian gneisses and surrounding foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids near the Myeongho area in the Yecheon Shear Zone, a representative segment of the Honam Shear Zone. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids commonly plot in the granodiorite field($SiO_2=61.9-67.1\;wt%$ and $Na_2O+K_2O=5.21-6.99\;wt%$) on $SiO_2$ vs. $Na_2O+K_2O$ discrimination diagram, whereas quartz-muscovite Precambrian orthogneisses plot in the granite field. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids are mostly calcic and calc-alkalic and are dominantly magnesian in a modified alkali-lime index(MALI) and Fe# [$=FeO_{total}(FeO_{total}+MgO)$] versus $SiO_2$ diagrams, which correspond with geochemical characteristics of Cordilleran Mesozoic batholiths. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids have molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 0.89 to 1.10 and are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, indicating I type. In contrast, Paleoproterozoic orthogneisses have peraluminous compositions, with molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 1.11 to 1.22. On trace element spider diagrams normalized to the primitive mantle, the large ion lithophile element(LILE) enrichments(Rb, Ba, Th and U) and negative Ta-Nb-P-Ti anomalies of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids and mylonitized quartz-muscovite gneisses in the Yecheon Shear Zone are features common to subduction-related granitoids and are also found in granitoids from a crustal source derived from the arc crust of active continental margin. ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(T)$ and initial Sr-ratio ratios of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids with suggest the involvement of upper crust-derived melts in granitoid petrogenesis. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids in the study area, together with the Yeongju Batholith, show not changing contents of specific elements(Ti, P, Zr, V and Y) from shear zone to the area near the shear zone. These results suggest that no volume changes and geochemical alterations in fluid-rich foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids may occur during deformation, which mass transfer by fluid flow into the shear zone is equal to the mass transfer out of the shear zone.
In Gimcheon area of the central Yeongnam massif granite gneiss occurrs with intercalated biotite gneiss at xenolith or restite. In order to understand the evolution of the central Yeongnam massif, it is essential to have absolute age information, but not many age data are available yet. Furthermore the previous age determinations from the study area are not compatible with the outcrop relationship. In this study we determined chemical ages from the zircon grains. We obtained ages of $1970\pm$ 78(l$\sigma$)Ma from the granite gneiss, $1814\pm$77(l$\sigma$)Ma from the outer rim of a rounded zircon and 1973$\pm$97(l$\sigma$)Ma from a longish zircon, both from the biotite gneiss. These ages seem to indicate the timing of granitic magma intrusion and subsequent metamorphism. Ages of $2954\pm$ 158($l\sigma$)Ma, 2440$\pm$58(l$\sigma$)Ma, and 2219$\pm$36($l\sigma$)Ma obtained from zoned core of the rounded zircon grain from the biotite gneiss suggest various geological events before such metamorphism of the biotite gneiss. Ages in the range of 1450~1670 Ma observed in zircons of both gniesses suggest later metamorphism that the granite gneiss and the biotite gneiss experienced together. The chemical age determination by electron probe micro-analyzer of this study utilized 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ beam diameter and it seems to be a very useful age determination from the zircons with complex growth history because of superior spatial resolution.

The Seokmodo consists mainly of biotite granite and granodiorite. The biotite granite is divided into the south and the north part by granodiorite. There occurs high temperature hot spring of which temperature is up to $72^{\circ}C$. The Rb-Sr isotopic data for the biotite granite define whole-rock isochron ages of $207{\pm}70$ Ma with initial Sr isotopic ratio of 0.7132 in north part and $132{\pm}50$ Ma with initial Sr isotopic ratio of 0.7125 in south part, suggesting that the magma be derived from the crustal source material. The geochemical characteristics of the biotite granite and hornblende granodiorite indicate that they were crystallized from calc-alkaline under syn-collisional tectonic environment. The samples of hot spring were collected at March 2005 and March 2006. The $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios of hot spring are 0.714507 and 0.714518, respectively and correspond to those oi the granite being occurred at the south part. The similarity of $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios between the granite and hot spring strongly suggests that the hot spring might be derived from the Seokmodo biotite granite.
Weathering profiles which were developed under a temperate, humid environment and relatively steep geography, show a thick saprolite and soil horiaon in the Precambrian granitic gneiss of the Yoogoo area. In the weathering profiles, secondary minerals such as interstratified biotite/vermiculite, tri- or di-octahedral vermiculite, halloysite, kaolinite, illite, smectite, gibsite and geothite were observed. Kaolinization of biotite is the most prevalent mechanism but vermiculitization is a minor from all ofweathering profiles. Biotite altered to B/V mixed layer-vermiculite, to illite and to halloysite, kaolinite and gibbsite. Halloysite is the most frequently observed weathering product of biotite in these profiles. Goethite is observed at the around or opened fissures of altered biotite. Tubular halloysite aggregates was fDrmed from dissolution-precipitation of plagioclase. The occurrence of halloysite aggregates is divided into a preferentially oriented type and a wrinkled one which were resulted from the dissolved type of plagioclase. Fe-bearing minerals have also been subjected to dissolution leaving the precipitation of geothite along dissolution voids. The profile of granitic gneiss is a typical weathering pattern showing a clay minerals increase toward the surface. Weathering of minerals were controlled by locally acidic and good-drainage environment, and formed a various and complicated secondary minerals in this study area.
The purposes of this study are to understand characteristic water-rock interaction mechanisms of groundwater in the granite area of Geochang and Hapcheon areas, Gyeongnam-do and to clarify the origin of fluoride. The possible water-rock interaction process and the source of fluorine were studied using water chemistry, rock chemistry, mineralogy by XRD, and microtexture analysis by backscattered electron image of the electron microprobe. No clear relationships between F and hardness was found. But the fluorine content increases to some extent with pH and well depth. Preferential alteration due to water-rock interaction took place along edges or cleavage, or margins of biotite. Because biotite is highly subject to alteration in granite aquifer, fluorine in groundwater is originated from the leaching of biotite.

An experiment for uranium sorption onto fresh and weathered biotites was performed. After centrifugation, concentrations of uranium in the supernatants were analyzed using ICP-MS, and biotite samples were investigated using XRD and SEM. With powdered biotites (<3 mm in size), we have conducted uranium sorption experiments about fresh and weathered biotites to obtain uranium sorption amounts in various pH conditions. The uranium sorption was not high at a low pH (e.g., pH 3), but increased with increasing pH. There were lower uranium sorption by the weathered biotites than by the fresh ones, and the difference was much larger at higher pH (e.g., pH 11). The lower sorption values of uranium by the weathered biotites may be caused by a change of mineral surfaces and a chemical behavior of surrounding dissolved elements. It seems that the uranium-mineral interaction has been diminished, especially, in the weathered biotite by a destruction and dissolution of preferential sorption sites on the mineral surfaces and by the colloidal formation from dissolved elements.
