Diversification of combustion fuel is the demands of the times and biomass is the most attractive option since it can contribute to the prevention of global warming at the same time. Due to the national renewable obligation, generally called Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), many power companies are considering direct combustion of biomass or co-firing with coal. In order to use biomass as a fuel, informations of its combustion characteristics and ash related problems should be investigated. In this study, combustion performance of biomass was assessed in a bubbling fluidized bed combustor, and ash characteristics of various biomass fuels were studied with standard test method.
The low rank coal combustion and biomass-coal co-firing characteristics were reviewed on this study for the power plant construction. The importance of using low rank coal(LRC) for power plant is increasing gradually due to power generation economy and biomass co-firing is also concentrated as power source because it has carbon neutral characteristics to reduce green-house effect. The combustion characteristics of low rank coal and biomass for a 310MW coal firing power plant and a 100MW biomass and coal co-firing power plant were studied to apply into actual power plant design and optimized the furnace and burner design.
To reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants, researchers focusing on coal and biomass co-firing technology. Biomass, with its carbon-neutral nature and lower quantities of nitrogen and sulfur compared with coals, has a positive impact on coal-fired power generation. Many studies on the combustion of biomass have been conducted, but the study on the combustion characteristics of biomass char is limited. FERPM predicts char combustion characteristics with high accuracy by introducing experimental data-based parameters of biomass char and has not yet been applied in numerical simulation. In this study, FERPM is numerically applied to char combustion of wood pellets representing wood-based biomass and the combustion characteristics are compared with the kinetic/diffusion limited model, intrinsic model, and diffusion limited model.
Seasonal variation in the biomass of eelgrass (Zostera marina) and epiphytic algae in two eelgrass beds (Dongdae and Aenggang Bay) around Namhae Island was investigated throughout 2005. Shoot density and eelgrass biomass differed across months and locations. Peak shoot density occurred from April to August 2005, whereas eelgrass biomass was higher in July and August 2005. Shoot density as well as eelgrass biomass were higher in Dongdae Bay compared to Aenggang Bay. A total of 21 epiphytic algal species (4 Chlorophyta, 2 Phaeophyta, and 15 Rhodophyta) were collected, and dominant species included Polysiphonia japonica, Lomentaria hakodantensis, Symphyocladia latiuscula, Champia sp., and Heterosiphonia japonica. Seasonal variation in both the species composition and biomass of epiphytic algae was substantial: peak epiphytic algal biomass occurred in January and December 2005. We also observed high epiphytic algal biomass in the eelgrass bed of Dongdae Bay. Seasonal changes in the biomass of eelgrass and epiphytic algae were primarily influenced by water temperature, whereas those of the epiphytic algal community were also correlated with eelgrass (substrate) morphology and growth, the life cycle of epiphytic algae, and physical characteristics within eelgrass beds. The spatial variation of eelgrass density and biomass were also limited by sediment characteristics.
Different biosolid fuel (wood pellet) properties between trunk and root of pine (Pinus densiflora) biomass were investigated. Trunk has more organic solvent extracts and Klason lignin content which has higher heating values than root biomass component. In root biomass, polysaccharides content was higher than trunk biomass. Based on Higher Heating Value (HHD) analysis and ash content, trunk biomass showed better solid fuel characteristics than root biomass. But pine root biomass had lower HHD than trunk biomass, its HHD values were higher than other hardwood or annual plant lignocellulosic biomass.

Fuel blend technique is one of the most effective way of using biomass to replace the coal. Many studies on combustion characteristics with coal and biomass blends have been conducted. In this study, char reactivity and emission characteristics of coal (Suek) and biomass (EFB) blends has been investigated by TGA and DTF to evaluate the applicability of the pre-treated (torrefaction, ash removal technology) EFB to pulverized coal boiler. In all blending cases, char reactivity improved as the blending ratio increases (10, 20, and 30%), especially torrefied EFB blended at 30%. Also, unburned carbon decreased as the blending ratio increases in all types of EFB. NOx emission showed the increase and decrease characteristics according to the content of fuel-N of raw EFB and torrefied EFB. But the amount of NOx emission at ashless EFB blends is greater than that of Suek despite of lower fuel-N. It indicated that co-firing effect of using the pretreatment biomass fuel is relatively better than those of the untreated biomass fuel about char reactivity and emission characteristics.

Distribution characteristics, variation patterns and affecting factors of hetorotrophic bacteria were studied from April to May 1999 in Bohai Sea by standard Acridine Orange epifluorescence microscopy (AO method). The biomass in surface waters showed a small day-night variation, varying from 0.13-2.51$\mu\textrm{m}$$.$dm$\^$-3/ with an average of 0.84 $\mu\textrm{m}$$.$dm$\^$-3/. The biomass in bottom waters showed, however, a large variation, changing from 0.15-4.18 $\mu\textrm{m}$$.$dm$\^$-3/ with an average of 1.36 $\mu\textrm{m}$$.$dm$\^$-3/. The peak values were obtained at 5 and 11 am. The bottom water biomass showed a significant correlation with particulate organic carbon (r=0.639, p<0.05). Heterotrophic bacteria showed high biomass in nearshore waters and low values in offshore areas with a high biomass zone around Yellow Sea river mouth, which was consistent with the distribution of nutrients. The vertical distribution of heterotrophic bacteria showed biomass in bottom waters was higher than in surface water. The biomass of heterotrophic bacteria in Bohai Sea was similar with that in other marine waters.
Nonliving methanotrophic biomass was used as biosorbent to remove lead which is one of representative pollutants in metal-bearing wastewater. Solution pH, maximum uptake, biosorbent dose and ionic strength were considered as major factors for adsorption experiments. The optimum pH range for lead removal was increased 3.8∼11.0 for methanotrophic biomass compared to biosorbent-free control, pH of 8.4∼11.2. Removal efficiency of lead by methanotrophic biomass was pH dependent, but less sensitive than that of control. In isotherm experiments with 0.2g biosorbent/L at initial solution pH 5.0, methanotrophic biomass took up lead from aqueous solutions to the extent of 1085 mg/g biomass. Removal amount of lead increased with an increase of biomass dose. According to biomass dose for initial 1000 mg Pb/L at initial pH 5.0, the optimum amount of biomass for maximum lead removal per unit methanotrophic biomass was 0.2 g biomass/L. As a result of scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), lead removal by methanotrophic biomass seemed to be through adsorptions on the surface of methanotrophic biomass and exopolymers around the biomass. EDS spectra confirmed that lead adsorption appeared on the biomass and exopolymers that may be effective to lead removal comparing before and after contact with lead. Removal efficiency of lead was slightly affected by ionic strength up to 2.0 M of NaCl and NaNO$_3$respectively.
A number of experiments were conducted in order to investigate the organic removal efficiency and biomass characteristics according to the organic shock loading rate in a fluidized bed biofilm reactor. At the operation conditions of HRT, 8.44 hour, superficial upflow velocity, 0.9 cm/sec and temperature, 22$\pm$$1^{\circ}C$, the removal efficiency of SCOD was founded to be 96.5, 92 and 90 % with the organic shock loading rate of 3.5, 10.8 and 33 kgCOD/m$^3$ㆍday, respectively. Within the F/M ratio ranged 0.4 to 2.0 kgCOD/kgVSSㆍday, the SCOD removal efficiency was shown as 90% at F/M ratio of 2.0 kgCOD/kgVSSㆍday, but the TCOD removal efficiency was 72 % at F/M ratio of 1.8 kgCOD/kgVSSㆍday. The average biomass concentrations were 7800, 14950 and 27532 mg/l on the organic shock loading rate of 3.5, 10.8 and 33 kgCOD/$\textrm{m}^3$ㆍday, respectively. This result was agreed with the fact that more biomass could be produced at high concentration of substrate, but some biomass was detached at the onset of shock and easily acclimated at the shock condition.

In recent years, concerns have been growing globally regarding greenhouse gases. Open burning of biomass causes emission of a number of greenhouse and other gases and substances. This paper studied an analysis on the characteristics of four types of biomass using duel type cone calorimeter. Cone calorimeter is widely used for assessing combustibility of materials in Europe. As a result, we evaluated several characteristics of biomass, such as heat released rate, smoke production rate, CO, $CO_2$ production and mass loss rate, and so on. $CO_2$ is currently responsible for over $60\%$ of the enhanced greenhouse effect, and may be the most important contributor to future. $CO_2$ production for biomass in the range of $1.74\~1.99kg/kg$ is similar to previous research conducted by Bhattacharya et al. (2002a).
