Objectives Psychological resilience is the ability to cope with stress. The genetic background behind psychological resilience is not much known. The serotonin transporter and dopamine transporter are implicated in stress related psychology and emotional processing. The aim of this study is to investigate a possible genetic role of functional polymorphisms of serotonin and dopamine transporters for psychological resilience. Methods A total of 951 healthy adult subjects were included. Psychological resilience was measured using Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Genotyping was performed for serotonin transporter gene(SERT) promoter variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) and dopamine transporter gene(DAT1) 3'-untranslated region (UTR) VNTR. Genetic association analysis was conducted between genotypes and the CD-RISC score. Results No genetic association was observed for SERT promoter VNTR or DAT1 3'-UTR VNTR with CD-RISC score. No genetic interaction between SERT promoter VNTR and DAT1 3'-UTR VNTR with CD-RISC score was detected. Conclusions Either serotonin or dopamine transporter did not seem to play a significant role for psychological resilience in this sample.
Helicobacter pylori infection causes gastrointestinal diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and may lead to gastric cancer. Several studies have reported that lactobacilli present on broccoli show inhibitory activity against H. pylori. Here, we evaluated aqueous broccoli, fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum MG208, for its fermentation characteristics and anti-H. pylori activities including antibacterial activity, growth inhibition, anti-adhesion, and urease inhibition. The results indicated that the fermentation characteristics changed significantly depending on the amount of aqueous broccoli used for fermentation (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the samples before fermentation (p >0.05). However, a significant concentration-dependent difference was noted in antibacterial activity and urease inhibition (p <0.05) following the addition of aqueous broccoli. Growth inhibition in the 10 mg/mL sample was significantly higher as compared to the negative control and similar to that with amoxicillin (positive control) (p <0.05). Anti-adhesion activity of aqueous broccoli was also significantly different (p <0.05) from the negative control. Therefore, aqueous broccoli fermented by L. plantarum MG208 could prove useful as a functional diet for protection of the gastric environment against H. pylori infection.

Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of Nurse Presence (NP) program on anxiety and physiological indicators in patients with gynecological surgery. Methods: This study used a randomized control group pre-test, post-test design. The patients were 25-65 years old who had undergone gynecological surgery with general anesthesia. The subjects were divided into an experimental group (n=30) and the control group (n=30). SPSS 21.0 was used to analyze the data with Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and one sample t-test. Results: The results show that there were significant differences in anxiety and heart rate and were no significant differences in systolic pressure or peripheral oxygen saturation of the experimental group which received the NP program. Conclusion: Nurse Presence program decreased pulse rate which is a physiological indicator by relieving the anxiety of the patients before gynecological surgery. Thus, this intervention is effective to relieve anxiety of the patients before gynecological surgery and should be utilized in clinics.
An analytical method was developed to determine tricyclazole residues in rice grain, straw, and soil using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet absorption detection. Tricyclazole was extracted with methanol from moist rice grain, straw, and soil samples. n-Hexane washing was employed to remove nonpolar co-extractives during liquid-liquid partition. Tricyclazole was then extracted with dichloromethane from alkaline aqueous phase, while acidic interferences remained in the phase. Dichloromethane extract was further purified by silica gel column chromatography prior to HPLC determination. Reverse-phase HPLC using an octadecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate and quantitate the tricyclazole residue in sample extracts monitored at ${\lambda}_{max}$ 225nm. Recoveries from fortified samples averaged $95.5{\pm}3.0%\;(n=6),\;87.5{\pm}20.%\;(n=6),\;and\;84.3{\pm}2.8%$ (n=12) for rice grain, straw, and soil, respectively. Detection limit of the method was 0.02 mg/kg for rice grain and soil samples while 0.05 mg/kg for rice straw samples. The proposed method was reproducible and sensitive enough to evaluate the safety of tricyclazole residues in rice grain, straw, and soil.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of listening to music on the level of anxiety, sedation, and vital signs of patients undergoing surgery with spinal anesthesia. Methods: A convenience sample of 70 adult patients, ASA physical status I-II, scheduled for elective urologic or orthopedic surgery with spinal anesthesia, was included in this study. They were assigned to either an experimental group (n=35), listening to music during surgery, or a control group (n=35), not listening to music. Their anxiety was measured with the Spielberg's Trait and State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-KYZ). Sedation level was monitored with the Bispectral Index, and the vital signs at beginning, 10, 20, 30, and 45 min after operation. Results: The music group reported significantly lower state anxiety level during surgery as compared with the control group (t=3.91, p<.001). Repeated measures of ANOVA indicated a significant by group interaction on BIS index scores of sedation (F=4.23, p=.006). Among the vital signs, only heart rate was a significant by group interaction (F=5.529, p=.004). Conclusion: These findings indicate that listening to music during surgery with spinal anesthesia is a useful and effective nursing intervention to reduce anxiety and to maintain proper sedation.
Purpose: The study was performed to investigate the effects of empathy on interpersonal relationships through the mediating effect of ego-resilience in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from June 5 to 30, 2018 using a self-report questionnaire measuring empathy, interpersonal relationships and ego-resilience. The sample was 204 nursing college students. SPSS WIN 23.0 programs were used to analyze the data. Results: Ego-resilience was positively related to empathy (r= .37, p< .001) and interpersonal relationships (r= .36, p< .001) and empathy was positively related to interpersonal relationships (r= .37, p< .001). Regression analysis showed that ego-resilience was affected by empathy (${\beta}=0.37$, p< .001), interpersonal relationships were affected by empathy (${\beta}=0.37$, p< .001). Interpersonal relationships were affected by empathy (${\beta}=0.28$, p< .001) and ego-resilience (${\beta}=0.26$, p< .001). Therefore ego-resilience mediates between empathy and interpersonal relationships. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop an effective intervention program to improve nursing students' empathy and ego-resilience.
Objectives Childhood trauma increases substantial risks for later developing not only mental health issues including psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia but also physical illness. In this study, possible associations of childhood trauma with metabolic syndrome and physical heath indices were tested among outpatients with schizophrenia. Methods A final sample of 46 adult outpatients with schizophrenia was recruited from an outpatient psychiatric unit of Hanyang University Guri Hospital. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), laboratory tests and physical measurement including Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist to hip ratio (WHR). The Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale and the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF) were also administered. Results We did not find significant correlations between total scores of childhood trauma and any of these variables, but physical neglect was negatively associated with BMI (r = -0.329, p = 0.026) and waist circumference (r = -0.304, p = 0.040). Conclusions In this preliminary study, we noted that subtypes of childhood trauma could contribute to physical health status separately. Clinicians need to consider the possibility that childhood trauma may affect physical health as well as psychological aspect of schizophrenic illness.
Cancer Osaka thyroid, also known as Tpl-2 (Cot) is a member of the MAP3K kinase family and plays a key role in the regulation of the immune response to pro-inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and tumour necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$). A series of Cot constructs with an N-terminal 6xHis tag were transiently expressed in HEK293 cells: $Cot_{130-399}$ (kinase domain), $Cot_{1-388}$ (N-terminal and kinase do-mains), $Cot_{1-413}$, $Cot_{1-438}$ (containing a putative PEST sequence), $Cot_{1-457}$ (containing both PEST and degron sequences) and $Cot_{1-467}$ (full-length protein). These Cot proteins were pulled down using an anti-6xHis antibody and separated by 2D electrophoresis. The gels were silver-stained and 21 proteins were detected that did not appear, or had substantially reduced intensity, in the control sample. Three of these were identified by MS and MS/MS analysis as Hsp90, Hsp70 and Grp78. Hsp90 appeared to bind to the kinase domain of Cot and this interaction was further investigated using co-immuno-precipitation with both overexpressed Cot in HEK293 cells and endogenous Cot in Hela cells.
