  • Knowledge base means a library stored in computer system providing useful information or appropriate solutions to specific area. Knowledge base associated with autism is the complex multidimensional information set related to the disease autism for its pathogenic factor and therapy. This paper focuses on the knowledge of biological molecular information extracted from massive biomedical texts with the aid of widespread used machine learning methods. Six classes of biological molecular information (such as protein, DNA, RNA, cell line, cell component, and cell type) are concerned and the probability statistics method, conditional random fields (CRFs), is utilized to discover these knowledges in this work. The knowledge base can help biologists to etiological analysis and pharmacists to drug development, which can at least answer four questions in question-answering (QA) system, i.e., which proteins are most related to the disease autism, which DNAs play important role to the development of autism, which cell types have the correlation to autism and which cell components participate the process to autism. • It is crucial to process not only social cognitive information but also various emotional information for appropriate social interaction in everyday life. The processing of emotions embedded in social stimuli is affected by various context and external factors and the features of their own. Emotion discrimination tasks using point-light biological motion were conducted in this study to understand the factors influencing emotion processing and their effects. A target biological motion with angry or happy emotion was presented in the first task in red, green, white, or yellow color. A white angry, happy, or neutral "cue" biological motion was displayed simultaneously. Participants judged the emotion of the target relative to the cue stimulus by comparing the target with the cue. The second task used only emotionally neutral stimuli to find effect by the color itself. The results indicated an association between the specific color of the target and emotion. Red facilitated processing anger, whereas green appeared to facilitate happy emotion. The discrimination accuracy was high when the emotions of the cue and the target were identical in general, but the combination of red color and anger yielded different results compared with the rest of the conditions. Some illusory emotional responses associated with the target colors were observed in the second task. We could observe the effects of external factors in this study, affecting the emotional processing using biological motion rather than conventional face stimuli. Possible follow-up studies and clinical research were discussed.

  • Coating process plays an important role in information technology such as display, battery, chip manufacturing and so on. However, due to complexity of coating material and fast deformation of the coating flow, the process is hard to control and it is difficult to maintain the desired quality of the products. Moreover, it is hard to measure the coating process because of severe processing conditions such as high drying temperature, high deformation coating flow, and sensitivity to the processing variables etc. In this article, the coating process is to be re-illuminated from the rheological perspectives. The practical approach to analyze and quantify the coating process is discussed with respect to coating materials, coating flow and drying process. The ideas on the rheology control of coating materials, pressure and wet thickness control in patch coating process, and stress measurement during drying process will be discussed.

  • In this paper, we present a signal analysis workstation in which the user can scrutinize and quantify biological signals, observe the effects of various signal processing algorithms on them, and eventually get some interpretation of clinical use. Within the system, the user can also access all the information in the central data base, such as patient personal information, biological signal information, and insert his interpretation results obtained into the data base after his careful observation. The software system is designed in an object-oriented paradigm, and written in C++ as a window-based application program.

  • Today's computers are built up from a minimal set of standard pattern recognition operations. Logic gates, such as NAND, are common examples. Biomolecular materials offer an alternative approach, both in terms of variety and context sensitivity. Enzymes, the basic switching elements in biological cells, are notable for their ability to discriminate specific molecules in a complex background and to do so in a manner that is sensitive to particular milieu features and indifferent to others, The enzyme, in effect, is a powerful context sensitivity pattern processor that in a rough way can be analogized to a neuron whose input-output behavior is controlled by enzymatic dynamics.

  • Due to the rapid evolution of high-throughput technologies, a tremendous amount of data is being produced in the biological domain, which poses a challenging task for information extraction and natural language understanding. Biological named entity recognition (NER) and named entity normalisation (NEN) are two common tasks aiming at identifying and linking biologically important entities such as genes or gene products mentioned in the literature to biological databases. In this paper, we present an updated version of OryzaGP, a gene and protein dataset for rice species created to help natural language processing (NLP) tools in processing NER and NEN tasks. To create the dataset, we selected more than 15,000 abstracts associated with articles previously curated for rice genes. We developed four dictionaries of gene and protein names associated with database identifiers. We used these dictionaries to annotate the dataset. We also annotated the dataset using pretrained NLP models. Finally, we analysed the annotation results and discussed how to improve OryzaGP.

  • The explosion in biological data resulting from high-throughput experiments requires new software tools to manipulate and display pathways in a way that can integrate disparate sources of information. A visual Java-based CAD tool for drawing and annotating biological pathways with semiautomatic image-processing features is described in this paper. The result of the image-editing process is an XML file for the appropriate links. This tool integrates the pathway images and XML file sources. The system has facilities for linking graphical objects to external databases and is capable of reproducing existing visual representations of pathway maps.

  • The tail of the striatum (TS) is located at the caudal end in the striatum. Recent studies have advanced our knowledge of the anatomy and function of the TS but also raised questions about the differences between rodent and primate TS. In this review, we compare the anatomy and function of the TS in rodent and primate brains. The primate TS is expanded more caudally during brain development in comparison with the rodent TS. Additionally, five sensory inputs from the cortex and thalamus converge in the rodent TS, but this convergence is not observed in the primate TS. The primate TS, including the caudate tail and putamen tail, primarily receives inputs from the visual areas, implying a specialized function in processing visual inputs for action generation. This anatomical difference leads to further discussion of cellular circuit models to comprehend how the primate brain processes a wider range of complex visual stimuli to produce habitual behavior as compared with the rodent brain. Examining these differences and considering possible neural models may provide better understanding of the anatomy and function of the primate TS.

  • MiRNA is a biological short sequence, which plays a crucial role in almost all important biological process. MiRNA patterns are common sequence segments of multiple mature miRNA sequences, and they are of significance in identifying miRNAs due to the functional implication in miRNA patterns. In the proposed approach, the primary miRNA patterns are produced from sequence alignment, and they are then cut into short segment miRNA patterns. From the segment miRNA patterns, the candidate miRNA patterns are selected based on estimated probability, and from which, the potential miRNA patterns are further selected according to the classification performance between authentic and artificial miRNA sequences. Three parameters are suggested that bi-nucleotides are employed to compute the estimated probability of segment miRNA patterns, and top 1% segment miRNA patterns of length four in the order of estimated probabilities are selected as potential miRNA patterns.

  • In order to integrate heterogeneous biological information sources, it is necessary to define the view that represents unified viewpoint for the multiple sources by hiding heterogeneity of the data. We present an XML-based view definition model and show Its operating principles in designing the middleware system to integrate biological information sources. This model supports the user-defined XML view to increase flexibility in constructing the integration system and execute integrated queries on higher level ion. Based on the view-definition model, we present a wrapping model for relational database systems and web resources as well as an application program.
