홀아비꽃대(Chloranthus japonicus) 뿌리로부터 분리한 shizukanol들의 생물활성 (Biological activity of shizukanols isolated from Chloranthus japonicus roots)

  • 홀아비꽃대(Chloranthus japonicus) 뿌리 조직의 메탄을 추출물은 벼 도열병(Magnaporthe grisea), 벼 잎집무늬마름병(Corticium sasaki), 토마토 잿빛곰팡이병(Botrytis cinerea), 토마토 역병(Phytophthora infestans) 및 밀 붉은녹병(Puccinia recondita) 등의 다양한 식물병을 효과적으로 방제하였다. 이 메탄올 추출물로부터 3개의 항균물질을 분리하였고 이들은 질량분석과 핵자기공명분석을 통하여 shizukanol B, C 및 D로 동정되었다. 이들 세 개의 물질들 중에서 shizukanol C가 실험한 식물병원균들의 균사생육 저해 활성이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 즉, $12.5{\mu}g/m\ell$ 이상의 농도에서 벼 도열병균과 고추 탄저병균(Colletotrichum gloeosporioides와 C. acutatum)의 균사 생육을 완전히 억제하였고, $3.13{\mu}g/m\ell$ 이상의 농도에서는 토마토 역병균의 균사 생육이 완전히 억제되었다. 세 가지 물질은 또한 in vivo에서 벼 도열병과 밀 붉은녹병에 대하여 특히 높은 방제효과를 보였다. 다른 한편으로 세 가지 물질들은 밀과 보리 잎에 약해를 유발하였고, 또한 좀개구리밥(Lemna paucicosta)의 생장을 억제하였으며, shizukanol B, C, D의 50% 생육억제 농도는 각각 $30.0{\mu}g/m\ell$, $49.9{\mu}g/m\ell$$154{\mu}g/m\ell$였다. 그리고 shizukanol C는 시험한 5종류의 해충중에서 벼멸구(Nilaparavata lugens), 복숭아혹진딧물(Myzus persicae), 배추좀나방(Plutella xylostella) 및 담배거세미나방(Spodoptera litura)에 대해서 $1,000{\mu}g/m\ell$ 수준에서 60% 이상의 살충활성을 보였다.

  • Non-absorbable substances in foods, for instance dietary fiber had been previously known as a non-nutritive part of foods. Recently , such a category has been gradually changed to as one of nutrients, As a main reason, dietary fibers includes many poly-or oligo-saccharides, which as resistant to alimentary hydrolyzing enzyme, However, parts of them are fermented by intestinal micro-organism to produce short chain fatty acids and so on. They are absorbed and utilized by human being. Now, it may be naturally accepted that dietary fiber is a kind of nutrients. Dietary fiber exerts many useful functions on body. They are classified into three large function , physicochemical function, physiological function and biological function. The last function of dietary fiber will be presented in the symphosium. Dietary fiber has several kinds of nutritional properties. One is energy source. Short chain fatty acids(SCFA) are oxidized and produced energy in body. Dietary fiber has not high energy, but not zero kilocalories. Another one is to be a constitutional component of higher animals' tissue. Last but most important one is physiological functions of dietary fiber.

Role of the surface loop on the structure and biological activity of angiogenin

  • Angiogenin is a member of the ribonuclease superfamily that induces the formation of new blood vessels. It has been suggested that the surface loop of angiogenin defined by residues 59-71 plays a special role in angiogenic function (1); however, the mechanism of action is not clearly defined. To elucidate the role of the surface loop on the structure, function and stability of angiogenin, three surface loop mutants were produced in which 14 amino acids in the surface loop of RNase A were substituted for the 13 amino acids in the corresponding loop of angiogenin. The structure, stability and biological functions of the mutants were then investigated using biophysical and biological approaches. Even though the substitutions did not influence the overall structure of angiogenin, they affected the stability and angiogenic function of angiogenin, indicating that the surface loop of angiogenin plays a significant role in maintaining the stability and angiogenic function of angiogenin.

Simultaneous Expression of the Protease Inhibitors in a Rice Blast-Resistant Mutant

  • We have previously identified genes for four different protease inhibitors (PIs) that were induced upon rice blast infection in a rice blast resistant mutant SHM-11. Our expression analysis of the PIs indicated that induction of the PIs was the highest 24 hr after rice blast inoculation in the rice mutant SHM-11. Three PIs in the group of serine PIs were highly expressed while a cystein PI was weakly expressed upon rice blast inoculation. Four PIs were weakly induced 48 hr after pathogen inoculation in rice blast susceptible wild type rice plant. The simultaneous expression of three serine PIs was apparent from SHM-11 and two of them were induced in rice blast resistant Taebaegbyeo. One of them was induced in rice blast resistant Hwayeongbyeo while none of them were expressed in rice blast susceptible Nagdongbyeo and rice blast resistant Dongjinbyeo. Our results suggest that the expression of PI gene is rice cultivar specific and may be linked with the rice blast resistance in a specific rice mutant by the simultaneous expression of the PI genes.

Chemical Genomics and Medicinal Systems Biology: Chemical Control of Genomic Networks in Human Systems Biology for Innovative Medicine

  • With advances in determining the entire DNA sequence of the human genome, it is now critical to systematically identify the function of a number of genes in the human genome. These biological challenges, especially those in human diseases, should be addressed in human cells in which conventional (e.g. genetic) approaches have been extremely difficult to implement. To overcome this, several approaches have been initiated. This review will focus on the development of a novel 'chemical genetic/genomic approach' that uses small molecules to 'probe and identify' the function of genes in specific biological processes or pathways in human cells. Due to the close relationship of small molecules with drugs, these systematic and integrative studies will lead to the 'medicinal systems biology approach' which is critical to 'formulate and modulate' complex biological (disease) networks by small molecules (drugs) in human bio-systems.

생물학적 모방에 따른 물고기 로봇의 직진유영 연구 (A study on the straight cruise of fish robot according to biological mimic)

  • 본 연구에서는 생물학적 모방에 따른 물고기 로봇의 직진유영에 관한 연구로써, Liu 등이 제안한 꼬리 모션 함수를 푸우리에 급수 전개의 7차 항까지 고려한 제안된 방법과 일반적인 사인함수만으로 근사한 방법과 비교하여 모의실험 하였다. 일반적으로 로봇 물고기의 꼬리 링크의 길이가 길어지고 링크가 많을 경우, 로봇 물고기의 꼬리 모션 함수의 말단 회전 관절 궤적은 사인 함수의 모양과 매우 다르다. 그러므로 로봇 물고기의 꼬리 궤적을 단순한 푸우리에 급수 전개의 기본파 성분만으로 근사하기에는 문제가 있다. 제안된 방법과 일반적인 사인함수만으로 근사한 방법의 모의실험 결과 제안된 방법이 로봇 물고기의 추력과 속도에서 10%정도 뛰어남을 보였다.
