Neuroglial Cell and Alzheimer's Disease (신경아교세포와 알츠하이머 병)

  • Neuroglial cells are fundamental for brain homeostasis and defense to intrinsic or extrinsic changes. Loss of their function and over-reactivity to stimuli contribute to the aging of brain. Alzheimer's disease (AD) could be caused by more dramatic response in neuroglia associated with various chemokines and cytokines. Neuroglia of the AD brain shares some phenotypes with aging neuroglia. In addition, neuroglial activation and neuroinflammation are commonly showed in neurodegeneration. Thus neuroglia would be a promising target for therapeutics of AD.

Biological Activities of Phytosterols and Their Variations in Crops (작물 함유 Phytosterol의 변이와 생리활성)

  • Plant fats and oils contain phytosterols as naturally occurring constituents, which are present in pure or esterified form, or conjugated as glycosides. The predominant phytosterol is sitosterol and minor components are campesterol, stigmasterol, $\Delta^7$-avenasterol and brassicasterol. They play a key role in cell membrane function of plants as cholesterol in animals. Phytosterols have been known for many years for their properties for reducing blood cholesterol levels, as well as their other beneficial health effects for cancer preventive biological-active substances. The objective of this paper is to present a description of the recent advances in phytosterols for future research.

  • Depression is a frequently developed psychiatric symptom after stroke. Poststroke depression(PSD) causes not only psychological distress related to depression but also other disturbances in many areas such as cognitive function, activities of daily living and quality of life. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of accurate detection and appropriate treatment of depression is mandatory in patients with stroke. This review focused on the current knowledge of PSD.

  • RbsC of Escherichia coli is the integral membrane component of the high-affinity ribose transport system classified as the AraH family. To understand the function and structure of RbsC, the topology of RbsC was investigated by alkaline phosphatase fusion. Characterization of a total of 64 RbsC-PhoA fusions revealed that RbsC is composed of six transmembrane helixes and has three periplasmic and two cytoplasmic loops.(omitted)

  • Since 1972 a series of experiments were conducted to reveal physiological function and biological activities involved in rooting of mulberry cuttings, and the behaviour of ether extractable growth control substances in leaves and stens. Measurements were made on various mulberry varieties for respiration of cuttings, suitable size for the production of cuttings, change of rootability of cuttings with growth of cutting shoots after cutting date, rooting tests on the green beans with ether leaf extract and ether stem extract, and rooting effect of cutting by NAA treatment.   • Kojic acid was investigated for its antifungal activity against the human pathogenic fungi including Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and Trichophyton rubrum. For C. albicans, C. neoformans and T. rubrum, the MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration) of kojic acid was 640, 80 and 160 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In C. neoformans, melanin-producing yeast, kojic acid-treated nonmelanized cell was more susceptible to magainin than melanized cell, suggesting melanin give a protective function against microbial peptide.

Culture collections which are reservior of biological materials now occupy a central position in life sciences and biotechnology. The World Data Center of Microorganisms (WDC) is a infrastructure of culture collections in the world realizing quick and smooth exchanges of information and microorganisms to support research and development in those fields. The WDC was relocated from University of Queensland in Australia to out institute RIKEN in 1986. This article introduces a function for WDC in RIKEN (RIKAGAKU-KENKYUUSHO, the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research)

  • Meiosis is a specialized cell division, essential in most reproducing organisms to halve the number of chromosomes, thereby enabling the restoration of ploidy levels during fertilization. A key step in meiosis is homologous recombination, which promotes homologous pairing and generates crossovers (COs) to connect homologous chromosomes until their separation at anaphase I. These CO sites, seen cytologically as chiasmata, represent a reciprocal exchange of genetic information between two homologous non-sister chromatids. RAD51, the eukaryotic homolog of the bacterial RecA recombinase, plays a central role in homologous recombination (HR) in yeast and animals. Loss of RAD51 function causes lethality in the flowering plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, suggesting that RAD51 has a meiotic stage-specific function that is different from homologous pairing activity.
