Climate change has become a major risk factor for the co-evolving ecological and societal systems that are interconnected through biogeochemical cycles. As the increasing emission of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHG) has been attributed to the principal cause of climate change, more attention has been given to the exchange between terrestrial sources/sinks of GHG and the atmosphere. In this review, we abridged a brief history of the background of GHG monitoring and the development of chamber method for the GHG measurement particularly from agriculture. Based on the reviews of prior domestic studies that analyzed the emission characteristics of GHG using chamber method, we discussed the concerns and the ways to improve chamber measurement to establish better scientific database for climate change adaptation.
BACKGROUND: Selenium is an essential element for all life forms but can be toxic above certain narrow levels. Prevalent forms of selenium in oxic environment are selenium oxyanions such as selenite and selenate, which may be contaminants in soils and water bodies. Bacterial reduction of more mobile selenium species (selenite or selenate) to less mobile elemental selenium may suggest a benign solution for alleviating toxicity and bioavailability of the selenium species. METHODS AND RESULTS: A facultative anaerobic bacterium, Citrobacter strain SE4-1 was isolated from the contaminated stream sediments and found to effectively reduce selenite to elemental selenium. Aqueous phase of selenite was analyzed by inductively couple plasma spectroscopy and the precipitated sphere-shaped elemental selenium was observed by transmission electron microscopy. CONCLUSION: The bacterial strain SE4-1 isolated in this study suggests a potential role in biogeochemical cycle of selenium by the selenite reduction in the stream environment, and potentials for biotechnological applications to reduceselenium concentrations in selenium-contaminated systems such as wastewater, soil, and groundwater.

Controversy has surrounded the potential impacts of phytoplankton on the tropical climate, since climate models produce diverse behaviors in terms of the equatorial mean state and El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude. We explored biophysical impacts on the tropical ocean temperature using an ocean general circulation model coupled to a biogeochemistry model in which chlorophyll can modify solar attenuation and in turn feed back to ocean physics. Compared with a control model run excluding biophysical processes, our model with biogeochemistry showed that subsurface chlorophyll concentrations led to an increase in sea surface temperature (particularly in the western Pacific) via horizontal accumulation of heat contents. In the central Pacific, however, a mild cold anomaly appeared, accompanying the strengthened westward currents. The magnitude and skewness of ENSO were also modulated by biophysical feedbacks resulting from the chlorophyll affecting El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ and La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ in an asymmetric way. That is, El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ conditions were intensified by the higher contribution of the second baroclinic mode to sea surface temperature anomalies, whereas La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ conditions were slightly weakened by the absorption of shortwave radiation by phytoplankton. In our model experiments, the intensification of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ was more dominant than the dampening of La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$, resulting in the amplification of ENSO and higher skewness.
Suspended sediment is an important oceanic variable for monitoring changes in coastal environment related to physical and biogeochemical processes. In order to estimate suspended sediment concentration (SSC) from satellite data, we derived SSC coefficients by fitting satellite remote sensing reflectances to in-situ suspended sediment measurements. To collect in-situ suspended sediment, we conducted ship cruises at 16 different locations three times for the periods of Sep.-November 2009 and Jul. 2010 at the passing time of Landsat $ETM_+$. Satellite data and in-situ data measured by spectroradiometers were converted to remote sensing reflectances ($R_{rs}$). Statistical approaches proved that the exponential formula using a single band of $R_{rs}$(565) was the most appropriate equation for the estimation of SSC in this study. Satellite suspended sediment using the newly-derived coefficients showed a good agreement with insitu suspended sediment with an Root Mean Square (RMS) error of 1-3 g/$m^3$. Satellite-observed SSCs tended to be overestimated at shallow depths due to bottom reflection presumably. This implies that the satellite-based SSCs should be carefully understood at the shallow coastal regions. Nevertheless, the satellite-derived SSCs based on the derived SSC coefficients, for the most cases, reasonably coincided with the pattern of in-situ suspended sediment measurements in the study region.
The characteristics and behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were determined by analyzing the molecular weight fractions and fluorescence properties of water samples in the downstream Nakdong River. Biogeochemical water quality parameters and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) were analyzed at five sampling points in the downstream area of the Nakdong River January-August 2019. The molecular weight fractions of the DOM were separated by the Liquid Chromatography-Organic Carbon Detection (LC-OCD). The DOM predominantly comprised humic substances, followed by the building blocks, low molecular weight neutrals and biopolymers. The hydrophobic (aromatic) and hydrophilic properties were shown as coexisting, as most of the SUVA254nm values were under four. The FDOM was characterized as humic-like (FDOMH) with allochthonous origin and protein-like (FDOMP) with autochthonous origin; the FDOMH with autochthonous origin was also identified. The FDOMH relies on the aromaticity of the allochthonous organic matter and increases during summer. The FDOMH and FDOMP, which depend on the biodegradable dissolved organic matter from phytoplankton, were highly fluorescent in winter. The allochthonous organic matter was the dominant factor contributing to the behavior of the DOM, externally introduced to the river by rainfall. The FDOM only minimally contributed to the behavior of the DOM. It can be explained as the seasonal characteristics of the DOM, varied by the source of the organic matter.
We defined a dam as a wetland for assessing wetland functions of man made dam. We compared Boryung dam with Upo wetland by HGM assessment. Hydrologic functions of Boryung dam are not good at short term water storage, but good at long term water storage. Biogeochemical functions of Boryung dam are about 50% of Upo wetland's functions. Boryung dam is a good wetland as a plant habitats and animal habitats. But functions as a habitat for birds were not good. With this study we look forward to making clear merits and demerits of Boryung dam’s functions as a wetland.
The groundwater dependent ecosystem associated with a natural stream is the area where mixing and exchange of surface water and groundwater occurs due to large chemical and hydraulic gradients. Surface-groundwater interactions play an important role in biogeochemical processes in groundwater dependent ecosystems and make this area a hydro-ecological hot spot. The objective of this study is to characterize the groundwater dependent ecosystem in a natural stream where nitrate contamination of stream water is observed by means of hydrogeological, chemical, and biological methods. In this study, vertical flow exchange(hyporheic flow) rates between stream and groundwater were estimated based on vertical hydraulic gradients measured at mini-piezometers of various depths. To investigate the biological natural attenuation potential, biological analyses using polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-cloning methods were performed in this study. Results show that the veritical hyporheic water fluxes affect nitrate concentrations and bacterial densities in groundwater dependent ecosystems to some degree. Also, denitrifying bacteria were identified in hyporheic soils, which may support the biodegradation potential of the groundwater dependent ecosystems under certain conditions.
Using results from an earth system model, the distribution of partial pressure of $CO_2$ ($pCO_2$) in surface seawater over the East China Sea is investigated. In this area $pCO_2$ shows minimum along the edge of the continental break along the path of the Taiwan-Tsushima Current System. Apparently modelled chlorophyll is also great along the current but the maximum of the chlorophyll and the minimum of $pCO_2$ do not coincide suggesting that the primary production is not the main cause of the $pCO_2$ minimum. As we move toward the Yellow Sea from the Kuroshio area the temperature decreases so that the $pCO_2$ becomes smaller. If we move further toward the Yellow Sea beyond the Taiwan-Tsushima Current System, alkalinity starts to drop substantially to intensify $pCO_2$ while overcoming the effect of decreasing temperature and salinity. Thus $pCO_2$ minimum occurs along the Taiwan-Tsushima Current System. Of course, the primary production lower $pCO_2$ during spring when it is high but the effect is local. Near the Yangtze river mouth and northeastern corner of the Yellow Sea the fresh water input is large enough and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) becomes low enough so that $pCO_2$ becomes lower again.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the spatial-temporal NPP(Net Primary Productivity) and SCS(Soil Carbon Storage) of forest ecosystem under climate change in the capital area of South Korea using Mapss-Century1 (MC1), one of Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs). The characteristics of the NPP and SCS changes were simulated based on a biogeochemical module in this model. As results of the simulation, the NPP varies from 2.02 to 7.43 tC $ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ and the SCS varies from 34.55 to 84.81 tC $ha^{-1}$ during 1971~2000 respectively. Spatial mean NPP showed a little decreasing tendency in near future (2021~2050) and then increased in far future (2071~2100) under the condition of increasing air temperature and precipitation which were simulated by the A1B climate change scenario of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). But it was estimated that the temporal change of spatial mean NPP indicates 4.62% increasing tendency in which elevation is over 150m in this area. However, spatial mean SCS was decreased in the two future periods under same climate condition.

The EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code), a numerical model for simulating three-dimensional (3D) flow, transport, and biogeochemical processes in surface water systems including rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries, was applied to assess the effect of sea water and fresh water exchange rates ($Q_e$) on the mixing characteristics of a conservative pollutant (tracer) induced from upstreams and salinity in Saemangeum Lake, Korea. The lake has been closed by a 33 km estuary embankment since last April of 2006, and now seawater enters the lake partially through two sluice gates (Sinsi and Garyuk), which is driving the changes of hydrodynamic and water quality properties of the lake. The EFDC was constructed and calibrated with surveyed bathymetry data and field data including water level, temperature, and salinity in 2008. The model showed good agreement with the field data and adequately replicated the spatial and temporal variations of the variables. The validated model was applied to simulated the tracer and salinity with two different gate operation scenarios: RUN-1 and RUN-2. RUN-1 is the case of real operation condition ($Q_e=25,000,000\;m^3$) of 2008, while RUN-2 assumed full open of Sinsi gate to increase $Q_e$ by $120,000,000\;m^3$. Statistical analysis of the simulation results indicate that mixing characteristics of pollutants from upstream can be significantly affected by the amount of $Q_e$.
