The effects of different transient loading conditions on xylene removability and bacterial activity were evaluated in the polyurethane (PU) biofilter inoculated with Rhodococcus sp. EH831: BF1 (the control) was operated under continuous and constant loading ($200{\pm}50ppm$); BF2 under continuous and constant loading after a 2-week long-term shutdown; BF3 under discontinuous (8 h on/16 h off on weekdays and a 2 day-shutdown at weekends); and constant loading BF4 under discontinuous and high loading ($700{\pm}300ppm$); and BF5 under continuous and fluctuating loading (high loading for 8 h and low loading ($75{\pm}25ppm$) for 16 h on weekdays and low loading at weekends). Xylene removal efficiencies in the BF1, BF2, BF3, and BF5 were ranged 83-89%, indicating that 2-week long-term shutdown, intermittent or fluctuant loading condition did not significantly influence the biofilter performance. However, discontinuous and high load condition (BF4) caused to deteriorate xylene removability to 52%. Rhodococcus sp. EH831 could be maintained at $10^9{\sim}10^{10}CFU/g-dry$ PU under 5 kinds of loading conditions. The result of polymerase chain reaction-terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism showed that there was no significant change in bacterial community structures by different loading conditions.
We studied the removal of toluene vapors in a lab-scale biofiter. Biofiltration was performed in a column fed in a downflow manner with contaminated air at ambient conditions. The column was packed with a mixture of peat and calstone(5:3 vol. Ratio), which was inoculated with microbes of selected stains(Pseudomonas putida type A). The microorganisms were immobilized on the filter media and biofilms were formed. The fiofilter was operated at various inlet toluene concentrations for days, and treated up to a maximum elimination capacity of $20 g/m^3hr$ at an inlet load of $30 g/m^3hr$, which corresponds to removal efficiencies in the range 20∼90% and a gas retention time of 1 to 2 min. The pressure drop was almost negligible over the biofilter columns, amounting to only $1.062 cmH_2O/m$ and appreciably smaller than other studies. The effects of operating conditions such as flow rate, inlet toluene concentration and moisture content on the performance of the biofilter were sequentially investigated.
A pilot-plant biofilter ($1750\;m\;W{\times}2750\;mm\;L{\times}2000\;mm\;H$) packed with polyurethane foam ($20\;m\;W{\times}20\;mm\;L{\times}20\;mm\;H$) was installed in an pharmaceutical plant emitting gas streams containing n-hexane and alcohols. The biofilter was successfully operated for 74 days under highly fluctuating incoming concentrations at a residence time of 12.8-24.8 sec. Alcohols and n-hexane were removed by more than 90% from 5 and 20 days after start up, respectively. Malodor was also removed more than 95% from 20 days after start up.

The present work aims to use a biofilter technology(aerated submerged filters) for the aerobic transformation at laboratory-scale of olive washing water(OWW) generated in the first steps of olive oil processing, as well as the genetic profiling and identification to the species level of the bacteria involved in the formation of the biofilm, by means of TGGE. Chemical parameters, such as biological oxygen demand at five days($BOD_5$) and chemical oxygen demand(COD), decreased markedly(up to 90 and 85%, respectively) by the biological treatment, and the efficiency of the process was significantly affected by aeration and inlet flow rates. The total polyphenol content of inlet OWW was only moderately reduced(around 50% decrease of the inlet content) after the biofilter treatment, under the conditions tested. Partial 16S rRNA genes were amplified using total DNA extracted from the biofilm and separated by TGGE. Sequences of isolated bands were mostly affiliated to the $\alpha-subclass$ of Proteobacteria, and often branched in the periphery of bacteria] genera commonly present in soil(Rhizobium, Reichenowia, Agrobacterium, and Sphingomonas). The data obtained by the experimentation at laboratory scale provided results that support the suitability of the submerged filter technology for the treatment of olive washing waters with the purpose of its reutilization.
Box experiments were performed to evaluate the removal efficiency of SVE (soil vapor extraction) for gasoline in soil. An activated carbon sorption tower and a biofilter were operated as post-treatment processes to remove VOCs extracted from extraction wells of SVE. An acrylic resin box (65 cm${\times}$20 cm${\times}$30 cm) was used to make artificial soil layers and two injection wells and one extraction well were built for SVE process in the box. Gases from extraction wells flew into the activated carbon sorption tower or the biofilter. Gasoline concentrations of VOCs emitted from the extraction well were compared with those after post treatments. More than 92% of initial gasoline mass in soil were removed by SVE within few days, suggesting that SVE is very available to remove VOCs from contaminated soils. To treat VOCs from extraction wells of SVE, an activated carbon sorption tower and a biofilter were attached to SVE process and their gasoline removal efficiencies were measured. These post treatment systems lowered gasoline concentrations to below 1.0 ppm within few days. Average remediation efficiency was 98% of gasoline for the activated carbon sorption tower and 84.1% for the biofilter. The maximum removal capacity of a biofilter was 10.7 g/L/hr, which was ten times higher than general biofilter removal capacity. Results from the study suggest that the activated carbon sorption tower and the biofilter would be available for the post treatment process to remove VOCs generated from SVE process.
This study is to discuss the factors influenced on the removal efficiency of a high-strength organic wastewaters investigated using the polypropyrene media which appropriate to attach microorganism in the tube type fixed biofilter reactor. The results obtained in the experiment were as follows: 1. The kinetics of reaction rate (k') were 0.125, 0.135, 0.155 varing initial COD 720, 1280, 1630 mg/l in batch reactor. 2. In the range of pH 4.0 ~12.0 was obtained the removal efficiency of COD higher than 85%. It was proved that variation of pH (4.0 ~12.0) was nothing to do with the removal efficiency of substrate in continuous reactor. 3. Temperature to obtain removal efficiency of COD higher than 85% was 10 ~ 40$\circ$C. Removal efficiency of COD was no less than those at high temperature. 4. In the continuous reactor, the volumetric loading of COD for removal efficiency higher than 95% had to be 0.5~1.5 kg COD/m$^3$.d below. And then the HRT was 8 hrs. 5. In comparison with the activated sludge process, the tube type fixed biofilter process was excellent in removal efficiency of substrate and sludge production rate.
Geotrichum sp. MF01, isolated from oil-contaminated soil, utilized methyl ethyl ketone(MEK) as the sole source of carbon and energy. The strain MF01 showed a Michaelis-Menten kinetics on MEK, and the kinetic parameters determined for MEK degradation were; specific removal rate, $r_{max}$ = 0.14 $h^{-1}$; half-saturation constant, $K_m$ = 5.88 mM. The adsorption of MEK by heat-killed strain was 0.62 mg at 8.07 mg MEK indicating that the degradation was the primary removal mechanism over adsorption. Biodegradation of MEK was studied in a biofilter using perlite, vermiculite 0:1, v/v) as supporting material. During 57 days of biofilter operation, $^3h^{-1}$.

Simultaneous removal of $NH_3,\;H_2S$ and toluene in a contaminated air stream was investigated over 185 days in a biofilter packed with Zeocarbon granule as microbial support. In this study, multi-microorganisms including Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter for nitrogen removal, Thiobacillus thioparus (ATCC 23645) for $H_2S$ removal, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15692), Pseudomonas putida (ATCC 17484) and Pseudomonas putida (ATCC 23973) for toluene removal were used simultaneously. The empty bed residence time (EBRT) was 40-120 seconds and the feed (inlet) concentrations of $NH_3,\;H_2S$ and toluene were 0.02-0.11, 0.05-0.23 and 0.15-0.21 ppmv, respectively. The observed removal efficiency was 85%-99% for $NH_3$, 100% for $H_2S$, and 20-90% for toluene, respectively. The maximum elimination capacities were 9.3, 20.6 and $17g/m^3/hr\;for\;NH_3,\;H_2S$ and toluene, respectively. The results of kinetic model analysis showed that there were no particular evidences of interactions or inhibitions among the microorganisms, and that the three bio degradation reactions took place independently within a finite area of biofilm developed on the surface of the Zeocarbon carrier.

Biofilter performance to reduce C $H_4$ emissions from MSW landfills was tested under a variety of environmental and design conditions. The optimum soil moisture content for C $H_4$ oxidation in a loamy sand was 13% by weight. The addition of N $O_3$-N did not affect the C $H_4$ oxidation rate. Soil depths of 30cm and 60cm were equally efficient in C $H_4$ oxidation. When the C $H_4$ loading rate was decreased, the percentage of C $H_4$ oxidized increased. The maximum C $H_4$ oxidation rate was 27.2 mol $m^{-2}$$d^{-1}$ under optimum conditions (loamy sand soil, 13% moisture content, 30cm soil depth, and an loading rate of 32.8 mol $m^{-2}$$d^{-1}$). Based on the above results, the installation of a properly sized and managed biofilter above a landfill cover should be capable of achieving a major reduction in atmospheric methane emissions from MSW landfills built with RCRA covers.
Two combined autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) and biofilter (BF) systems were operated to treat the piggery wastewater and the ammonia offgas. Experimental results indicated that the organic removal efficiency of ATAD-2, operated with oxygen, was higher than that of ATAD-1, operated with air. The concentration of ammonia in ATAD-2 offgas was higher compared to ATAD-1 offgas, but the total amount of ammonia produced from ATAD-2 was less than that from ATAD-1 due to the lower oxygen flowrate. The ammonia gas produced from both ATAD reactors was successfully removed by the BF. The BF-1, connected with ATAD-1, removed 93% of ammonia at the loading rate of $9.4g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. The BF-2, connected with ATAD-2, removed 95% of ammonia gas at the loading rate of $8.1g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. As the nitrification process continued, pH value of recirculating solution continuously decreased due to the accumulation of nitrate. When the ammonia loading rate was less than $22.7g\;NH_3-N/m^3/h$, the proper replacing cycle of recirculating solution was in the range of 10 to 11 days. Almost 90% of total mass of nitrogen fed into the each BF was confirmed from the mass balance on nitrogen.
