Influence of ionic liquid additives on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent-based electrolytes against an activated carbon electrode

  • This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ($PYR_{14}BF_4$) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TEABF_4$) as a common salt. Using the $PYR_{14}BF$ ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and lower interface resistance between carbon and electrolyte, resulting in improved capacitance. The chemical and electrochemical stability of the electrolyte was measured by ionic conductivity meter and linear sweep voltammetry. The electrochemical analysis between electrolyte and carbon electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

  • The biochemical properties of strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from cattle with peracute gangrenous mastitis, acute systemic mastitis and chronic mastitis were examined. Of 261 strains of Staphylococci isolated from quarters with clinical mastitis, 140 (53.6%) were classified as Staphylococcus aureus and 121 (46.4%) were coagulase-negative staphylococci. All the strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from quarters with peracute gangrenous mastitis and acute systemic mastitis showed production of alpha heamolysin, coagulase, lipase, phosphatase, nuclease and gelatinase, and fermentation of mannitol. However, of 114 strains of Staphylococcus aureus obtained from quarters with chronic mastitis, 64 (56.1%) possessed alpha lysin, and 43 (37.7%) produced lipase in egg yolk medium. The most common hemolytic pattern of the strains associated with chronic mastitis was ${\beta}{\delta}$ type.

  • Sewage facilities are positively necessary for environment improvement such as rainwater removal, sewage disposal, preservation of the quality of water and health of the citizens in present-day. Meanwhile, a deterioration of the concrete sewer facilities is increasing rapidly due to the chemical and physical attack and especially biochemical attack that is to say biodeterioration. In this study, to prevent biochemical corrosion of the sewer concrete, surface of the concrete was spread with liquefied organic and inorganic complex antibiotics and then its engineering properties were experimentally investigated

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the biochemical characteristics and anti-biotic resistance of pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from piglets with diarrhea in Kyongbuk Western Area during the period from February to November 1992. 55 E. coli strains were isolated from 97 piglets with diarrhea and the biochemical and cultural reaction were compared with the classification criteria of Edwards and Ewing. The majority of E. coli were susceptible to amikacln, enrofloxacin and gentamicin. 51 (92.7%) out of 55 drug resistance stains carried R factor (R+) which were transferable to the recipients by conjugation.

Protective effect of Jageum-Jung on chlorpyrifos-induced acute toxicity in ICR mice

  • Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is one of the most heavily used organophosphate pesticides and is useful as an insecticide drug. However, CPF also causes toxic effects in nontarget organisms, including humans and animals. Jageum-Jung (JGJ) is a traditional oriental medicine, composed of five specific herbs with antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties, used for detoxification. In the present study, highly concentrated CPF was orally administrated to male Institute of Cancer Research mice to produce acute toxicity, and the protective effects of JGJ administration were investigated through statistical analysis of changes in body and organ weights and serum biochemical parameters. JGJ caused body and organ weights to recover and reduced the levels of serum biochemical parameters indicative of liver damage, such as glutamic oxalate transaminase, glutamic pyruvate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, lactic dehydrogenase, urea, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride, that had been increased by CPF treatment. Our results demonstrated that JGJ ameliorates the effects of acute chlorpyrifos-induced toxicity. Therefore, JGJ has the potential to be used as a traditional medicine to alleviate insecticide toxicity.

UV 중합에 의한 이성질체 분리막 제조와 특성 (The Preparation of Chiral Separation Membranes by UV Polymerization and its Properties)

  • 본 연구에서는 서로 상반되는 생리 활성을 나타내는 거울상 이성질체를 분리하기 위해 UV 중합법에 의해 이성질체를 인식할 수 있는 분자 인식형 고분자(molecularly imprinted polymers; MIPs) 분리막 제조와 그 분리막을 이용한 이성질체의 분리 선택성에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate; PC) 막은 기공(pore) 내벽에 작은 spot의 형태로 중합되었고 양성(anodisc; AD) 막은 기공 내벽이 아닌 표면(surface) 부분에 500~700 nm 정도의 필름(film) 형태로 중합되었다. 한편, 제조된 MIPs 분리막들의 L-트립토판(tryptophane; Trp) 이성질체 용액을 이용한 분리 선택도 비교 결과, 기능성 단량체인 메타아크릴산(methacrylic acid; MAA)에 대하여 가교제인 에틸렌 글리콜 디메타아킬레이트(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; EGDMA) 90% 이상, 분자제인 메탄올(methanol; MeOH)이 30% 이하 첨가되어 필름 형태로 중합된 AD MIPs 분리막이 3.5의 우수한 선택도를 가졌다.

코코넛 오일로부터 유래된 카르복실레이트계 음이온 계면활성제의 합성 및 계면 특성에 관한 연구 (Synthesis of Carboxylate-Based Anionic surfactant from Coconut Oil Source and Characterization of Interfacial Properties)

  • 본 연구에서는 코코넛 오일로부터 카르복실레이트계 음이온 계면활성제 SLEC-3을 합성하였으며, 합성된 계면활성제의 구조를 FT-IR, 1H-NMR 및 13C-NMR 분석을 통하여 확인하였다. 합성한 계면활성제 SLEC-3에 대하여 임계 마이셀 농도, 정적 및 동적 표면장력, 유화력, 거품 안정성 등의 계면 물성을 측정한 결과, 기존 세제 제품에서 널리 사용되는 음이온 계면활성제 SLES와 비교하여 계면 활성이 보다 우수하고 계면 에너지를 낮추는데 더 효과적이었다. 또한 SLCE-3에 대한 생분해성, 급성 경구 독성 및 급성 피부자극 시험을 실시한 결과, 저자극 및 저독성을 가지고 있기 때문에 세제 및 세정제 제품에 적용할 수 있을 것으로 판단되었다.
