This study examines the wearing comfort of elderly women through a physiological analysis based on rectal temperature and biochemical analysis with salivary melatonin and cortisol. This study was conducted on 7 elderly women aged 65 or over. Two kinds of clothing ensemble (control and prototype) were used as experimental clothing. The control clothing was a general clothing ensemble and the prototype clothing lowered clothing pressure by adding an extra gap. The experimental schedule included daily living activities with randomly assigned experimental clothing. Rectal temperature was constantly measured every 5 minutes during the experiment and saliva samples for melatonin and cortisol were collected twice per day before and after sleep. The rectal temperature was lower for the prototype than the control throughout the experiment, and its circadian rhythm was prompt and clear in prototype. In addition, melatonin was secreted more but cortisol was secreted less when the subjects wore the prototype clothing. With these results, we assumed that regular circadian rhythm and low level of stress might be caused by wearing prototype clothing that lowered clothing pressure. The results demonstrate the necessity to develop clothing that considers body changes in elderly women.
In this paper, core-shell structure of nickel/gold (Ni/Au) conductive layer on poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) micro-ball was fabricated and its conduction property was investigated. Firstly, PMMA micro-ball was synthesized by using dispersion polymerization method. Size of the ball was $2.8{\mu}m$ within ${\pm}7%$ deviation, and appropriate elastic deformation of the PMMA micro-ball ranging from 31 to 39% was achieved under 3 kg pressure. Also, 200 nm thick Ni/Au conductive layer was fabricated on the PMMA micro-ball by uniformly depositing with electroless-plating. Adhesion of the conductive layer was optimized with help of surface pre-treatment, and the layer adhered without peeling-off despite of thermal expansion by collision with accelerated electrons. Composite paste containing core-shell structured particles well cured at low temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ while pressing the test chip onto the substrate to make electrical contact, and electrical resistance of the conductive layer showed stable behavior of about $6.0{\Omega}$. Thus, it was known that core-shell structured particle of the Ni/Au conductive layer on PMMA micro-ball was feasible to flexible electronics.
In recent years much attention has been paid to swine respiratory infection caused by Haemophilus(H.) Pleuropneumoniae with rapid expansion of pork industry in Korea. The organism may cause an acute respiratory infection with high morbidity and mortality, or it may also cause chronic persistent infection, resulting in loss of body weight. The present study was performed to observe the etiologic situation of H. Pleuropneumoniae infection by evaluating bacteriological, serological examinations with the lungs and sera collected from slaughtered pigs in Daegu city, respectively. In addition, antibiotic susceptibility test was carried out against the isolated strains of H. Pleuropneumoniae. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Only 10 strains of H. Pleuropneumoniae were isolated from the 120 cases of swine lungs examined, and biological and biochemical characteristics of the isolates were identical with that of standard strains(serovar 1 to 6). 2. Out of 336 swine sera examined, 108(32.1%) were shown to be positive against H. Pleuropneumoniae by latex agglutination test. 3. Antibiotic susceptibility test revealed that 10 isolates of H. Pleuropneumoniae were sensitive to 16 kinds of antibiotic such as ampicillin, benzylpenicillin, piperacillin, cephalothin, cefazolin, cefamandol, cefoperagon, lactomoxycefa, tetracycline, minocycline, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, amikacin, colistin and nalidixic acid, whereas cloxacillin, erythromycin, kitasamycin, lincomycin, oleand-amycin, and bacitracin were resistent.
To investigate the prevalence of Streptococcus suis in pig industry in Korea, we isolated S suis from pigs during two years. The isolates were identified by biochemical and coagglutination test. Serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates were determined. Fourteen strains(12.2%), 11 strains(27.5%), 58 strains(7.8%) and 4 strains(11.1%) of S suis were isolated from 115 nasal swabs, 40 tonsils of healthy pigs, 745 pneumonic lungs and 36 meningitis of diseased pigs, respectively. The isolates were highly susceptible to ampicillin, cephlothin and ofloxacin while they were resistant to oxytetracycline. Among the isolates, 63(75.9%) strains were to the S suis capsular type 1 to 10 and 11(13.3%) strains were untypable. Capsular type 2 was the most prevalent with 32(38.6%) strains of all isolates.
This study was aimed to isolation and identification of attached bacteria on the clothes excavated from Deajeon area dating on the 16th century. From the observation with colony shape, 17 bacterial strains were isolated, and then 7 bacterial strains were identified with morphological and biochemical characteristics. Streptococcus sp., Alcaligenes faecalis, Gemella sp., Acinetobacter sp., Pseudomonas vesicularis, Aeromonas sain. salmonicida, Moraxella spp. In observation of the bacterial strains by the sort of textile, more bacterial strains were found in silk, cotton, and cotton batt than in ramie and hemp. It is suggest that hemp has antibacterial characteristics due to the presence of lignin. In the comparison washed samples with unwashed ones, there were more kinds of bacterial strains in washed samples. In the cellulase activity tests, all isolated bacteria had low level cellulase activity.
This study was investigated to isolate identify the total bacteria and fungi from the indoor air of work-place of the shoes, paint, stainless steel, and plastic industries. The number of bacterial colonies on the nutrient agar plates were calculated by the open petridish method for 30 minutes in indoor air of work-places at the autumn and winter. The isolated bacteria were identified by Gram stain and biochemical test using API Staph and API 20E kits. The isolated fungal colonies were identified by gross appearance of the giant colonies and microscopic examination of their spore and hyphal characteristics on the slide culture method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of several antibiotics against isolated bacteria was determined by the microdilution method with Mueller-Hinton broth. The 70-400 colonies in autumn and 54-236 colonies in winter were isolated from the indoor air of work-places of several industry. The isolation rates of Gram positive cocci, Gram positive bacilli, Gram negative bacilli, and Gram negative cocci were 46.3%, 19.8%, 17.3%, and 16.1%, respectively. In Gram positive cocci, the most strains were identified as Aerococcus spp, Micrococcus spp, and Staphylococcus spp. In Gram positive and negative bacilli, and Gram negative cocci were identified as Bacillus spp, Pseudomonas spp, and Neisseria spp, respectively. The frequently isolated fungi were Aspergillus spp, Penicillium spp and Rhizopus spp, respectively. The frequently isolated Aerococcus spp, Micrococcus spp, and Staphylococus spp were highly resistance against ampicillin, erythromycin, methicillin, and tetracycline. These results arouse our attention to microbiologic pollution in the indoor air of work-places of industries.
This study is that of providing a fairly practical practival guide to the use of natural pigment in food industry. A strain isolated from marine resources was carried out the production of red pigment. The pigment showed UV absorption maxima at 520 and 550 nm. The color intensity in aqueous solution was fairly stable in the ranges of pH 5~8. The strain KS-97 produced a maximum yield of red pigment at$ 25^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs with pH 7.0. The strain KS-97 was iden-tified a Bacillus sp. based on morphological and biochemical characterization such as a rod from, motility, spore for-mation, Gram positive and catalase production. The production of red pigment indicated that the strain Ks-97 utilized at thigh concentration of colloidal chitin as carbon sources obtained maximum yield of red pigment at $25^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs. The highest production of red pigment was observed with cultivation in medium containing 20% colloi-dal chitin, 2.5g polypeptone, 2.5g yeast extract, 1.0g $KH_2$$PO_4$, 0.01g $MgSO_4$.$6H_2$O, 0.01g $ZnSO_4$, 0.01 g $MnSO_4$(per 1).
In many countries, goat milk is an excellent nutrient source and is less allergenic for children and the elderly. The casein composition of goat milk consists largely of ${\beta}$-casein and lower amounts of ${\alpha}_{s1}$-casein, which may interfere with digestion by forming solid curds in the human stomach. Goat milk contains small fat globules and large amounts of medium chain fatty acids for, better digestibility, as well as abundant minerals and vitamins with high absorption rates. Recently, the medical benefits of goat milk in different human disorders have been recognized, leading to an increased interest in developing functional foods with goat milk, particularly for individuals with malabsorption syndrome. However, the physiological and biochemical properties of goat milk are largely unknown. We review the importance of goat milk as a potential functional food by providing scientific evidence confirming its health benefits.
Major progress has been made in the past decade towards understanding of the biosynthesis of red carotenoid astaxanthin and its roles in stress response while exploiting microalgae-based astaxanthin as a potent antioxidant for human health and as a coloring agent for aquaculture applications. In this review, astaxanthin-producing green microalgae are briefly summarized with Haematococcus pluvialis and Chlorella zofingiensis recognized to be the most popular astaxanthin-producers. Two distinct pathways for astaxanthin synthesis along with associated cellular, physiological, and biochemical changes are elucidated using H. pluvialis and C. zofingiensis as the model systems. Interactions between astaxanthin biosynthesis and photosynthesis, fatty acid biosynthesis and enzymatic defense systems are described in the context of multiple lines of defense mechanisms working in concert against photooxidative stress. Major pros and cons of mass cultivation of H. pluvialis and C. zofingiensis in phototrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic culture modes are analyzed. Recent progress in genetic engineering of plants and microalgae for astaxanthin production is presented. Future advancement in microalgal astaxanthin research will depend largely on genome sequencing of H. pluvialis and C. zofingiensis and genetic toolbox development. Continuous effort along the heterotrophic-phototrophic culture mode could lead to major expansion of the microalgal astaxanthin industry.

In September 2021, gray-to-brown discoloration and expanding water-soaked lesions were observed on the outer and inner layers and the core of kimchi cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis) in fields located in Samcheok, Gangwondo, Korea. A bacterial strain designated as KNUB-02-21 was isolated from infected cabbage samples. Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of the 16S rRNA region and the dnaX, leuS, and recA genes confirmed that the strain was affiliated with Pectobacterium versatile. Additionally, the biochemical and morphological profiles of the isolate were similar to those of P. versatile. Based on these results, the isolate was identified as a novel strain of P. versatile. Healthy kimchi cabbage slices developed soft rot upon inoculation with P. versatile KNUB-02-21 and exhibited symptoms similar to those observed in the diseased plants in fields. The re-isolated strains were similar to those of P. versatile. Prior to our study, P. versatile as the causative pathogen of kimchi cabbage soft rot had not been reported in Korea.
