An experimental rearing of tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury was conducted to study silkworm-food plant-interaction and thereby to search for an alternate silkworm food plant. The silkworm-food-plant-interaction was studied with six different food plant species viz. Terminalia tomentosa, Terminalia arjuna, Terminalia belerica, Terminalia chebula of Combretaceae family and Lagerstroemia speciosa, Lagerstroemia parviflora of Lythraceae family. The rearing performance of silkworm on Lagerstroemia speciosa in terms of cocoons per DFL and silk ratio was found comparable with Terminalia tomentosa and Termonalia arjuna, the primary tasar silkworm food plant species. These three plant species also possessed better results in terms of physiological (leaf moisture content and net photosynthesis rate) and biochemical (Chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrate and crude fibre contents) characteristics to support silkworm rearing than Terminalia belerica, Terminalia chebula and Lagerstroemia parviflora. The correlation study between silkworm rearing performance and food plant's constituents indicates commercial perspective of Lagerstroemia speciosa as an alternate food plant for tasar silkworm rearing.

Shigellosis is the most common bacterial gastroenteritis both in developing and developed countries, but bacteremia due to Shigella spp. is very rare. In developed countries recent shigellosis is mostly caused by S. sonnei, but S. flexeri infection is rare. We had rare cases of S. flexeri infections in a family in the Jeonbuk Province: an 8-year-old boy with bacteremic shigellosis and 10- and 12-year-old brothers with diarrhea. The isolates had identical biochemical characteristics, and were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and co-trimoxazole. PFGE pattern of Not I-restricted genomic DNA suggested that the isolate from blood was closely related to the two strains isolated from stool which had an identical PFGE pattern.
Biochemical characteristics of Spodoptera uigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus (SeNPV) isolated in Jinju were studied. SeNPV contained a number of nucleocapsids within a viral envelope embeded in polyhedra. The polyhedral protein of SeNPV was composed of a single polypeptide with a M. W. of 30kd. Double-immunodiffusion test showed that the polyhedral protein of SeNPV had common antigenic determinants with SINPV and BmNPV. Virion proteins of SeNPV were resolved into 49 polypeptides by silver staining after SDS-PAGE. The approximate genome size of SeNPV by restriction endonuclease analysis was 1l0kb.
300 MHz proton NMR spectra of human blood plasma were analyzed by deconvolution of spectrum, and we compared its results with Fossel's test in normal (15 cases), liver cancer (14 cases) , and other cancer (14 cases) groups. This analysis had enabled us to obtain dynamic characteristics of each individual lipoprotein. As a result of deconvolution method, the VLDL and chylomicron intensity level were found to be elevated in the patients with liver cancer. Moment ratio values of $CH_2$ resonance in the raw spectrum were found to be higher than the normal group for patients with, malignant tumors other than liver cancer. These differences between the three groups could not be found in the conventional Fossel's test. We could simulate plasma spectra by addition of spectra of individual lipoproteins through deconvolution method. Further clinical trials in larger populations and additional biochemical method may shed new light on many of clinical and biochemical interests for knowing characteristics about lipoprotein not separated from blood and the background of Fossel test.

The present study was conducted to investigate biochemical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of Aeromonas hydrophilia isolated from Jackass penguins (Spheniscus demersus) of zoo and capelins (Mallotus villosus). Seven of Jackass penguins showed anorexia, depression with seriously greenish vomiting for a few days, but resulted in 4 deaths although extensive treatment was carried out by zoo veterinarians. From the 18 samples composed of organs or feces from dead or live Jackass penguins and capelins, 4 (22.2%) Aeromonas hydrophilia were isolated and Bacillus spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus auricularis, Staphylococcus cohnii and Enterobacter aminigenus were also identified. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests of Aeromonas hydrophilia showed that all isolates were susceptible to amikacin, gentamicin, kanamycin, norfloxacin and trimethoprim- sulfadimethoxazole. However, all isolates were resistant to the following antimicrobials; ampicillin, bacitracin, c ephalothin, cefazolin, noboviocin, penicillin and vancomycin.
Leucine-responsive Regulatory Protein (Lrp) is a global regulator involved in modulating a variety of metabolic functions, including the catabolism and anabolism of amino acids as well as pili synthesis. In addition, there is growing evidences that Lrp may play an important role when cells make transition between rich and lean nutritional conditions. In this review, the biochemical characteristics of Lrp are described to provide a good example that shows how bacteria adapt to nutrient limitation and environmental stress.
Organic waste used as a feedstock in the anaerobic digestion (AD), it includes carbon and nitrogen. Carbon and nitrogen have an effect on the various digestive characteristics during AD, however, the study is rare about those of the interaction. This study investigates the influence of carbon type and carbon to nitrogens (C/N ratios) on the AD characteristics of organic waste. Experimental treatments involved a combination of three carbon types with three C/N ratios. The AD tests were carried out using a 125-mL serum bottle at a constant temperature of 37℃ and moisture 95% for 18 days. Degradation pattern shows the difference among three-carbon treatments, the starch group was faster than other groups. Maximum methane production date was similar between starch (9.96 ± 0.05 day) and xylan group (10.0 ± 0.52 day), those of the cellulose group (14.6 ± 1.80 day) was slower than other groups (p < 0.05). The lag phase was only affected by the carbon type (p < 0.05). Ammonia nitrogen was mainly affected by nitrogen concentration regardless of carbon type (p < 0.05). This study showed that xylan is useful as feedstock in order to decrease the lag phase, and it showed that ammonia was independently affected by the nitrogen concentration.
Carotenoids such as $\beta$-carotene and astaxanthin are used as food colorants, animal feed supplements and for nutritional and cosmetic purposes. In a previous study, an astaxanthin biosynthesis gene cluster was isolated from the marine bacterium, Paracoccus haeundaensis. Geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) synthase (CrtE), encoded by the ortE gene, catalyzes the formation of GGPP from farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP), which is an essential enzyme for the biosynthesis of carotenoids in early steps. In order to study the biochemical and enzymatic characteristics of this important enzyme, a large quantity of purified GGPP synthase is required. To overproduce GGPP synthase, the crtE gene was subcloned into a pET-44a(+) expression vector and transformed into the Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) codon plus cell. Transformants harboring the crtE gene were cultured and the crtE gene was over-expressed. The expressed protein was purified to homogeneity by affinity chromatography and applied to study its biochemical properties and molecular characteristics.
The objective of this study was to identify the fermentation characteristics of Bacillus thuringiensis and emetic, non-emetic Bacillus cereus using analytical profile index (API) test. Ten strains of B. thuringiensis and 10 strains of B. cereus including 3 strains of emetic type were used at the same concentrations. The differences of fermentation characteristics between the B. thuringiensis and B. cereus was not obvious, but the differences between the non-emetic and emetic B. cereus were distinctive. Seven among 50 substrates were negative for all non-emetic B. cereus strains and positive for all emetic strains, and three substrates among additional 12 substrates had the same tendency. From these differences, 3 emetic B. cereus strains were not indicated as B. cereus by API test. These results indicate that API test is not a suitable method to identify some strains of emetic B. cereus, and the distinctive differences in substrate utilization can be used to improve selective media.
